YESTERDAY.

Every inch of space in Camp holds layers of memories for me—from formative experiences as a camper, special moments as a staff member, Labor Day weekends as an alumna, and now years of Visiting Days with my kids.” DIANA GITIG, ALUMNA, PARENT

TODAY.

As someone who didn’t attend overnight Jewish camp when I was growing up, I am incredibly grateful to see the effect Ramah Berkshires has on my children. They are at their happiest, healthiest, and absolute best when they are at Camp.” JOEL CARTER, PARENT

TOMORROW.

It's incredibly exciting to see Camp's proactive approach, honoring what has been impactful, while also making adjustments to meet the needs of our families to ensure a continuous strong and vibrant Ramah community.” REBECCA KAHN, ALUMNA

A MESSAGE FROM RABBI ETHAN LINDEN It is summer (or kayitz, as we would call it in Wingdale) and it’s one of those gorgeous days that campers and staff just live for. Eighty degrees, no humidity, and Camp is buzzing with activity. Over at mitbachon (our state-of-the-art teaching kitchen), campers are learning about the traditional foods of Ugandan Jewry, and how to cook them. In Mercaz Ha-Limmud (The Learning Center) a group of Gesher campers are teaching a class to Shorashim campers about the value of hachnasat orchim (welcoming guests)—a value they will have a chance to exhibit when the campers from Ramah Palmer come to play in just a few weeks. Down at the agam (lake), lifeguards are teaching proper stroke technique, while the boating staff—using the expanded beach—gives an impromptu sailing lesson to some Bogrim campers who had a free period and wanted to learn something new. Meanwhile, just a little bit down the road, a group of Nitzanim campers are headed to our wilderness survival trail system, where they will learn about fire-building, orienteering, and teamwork. And our Tikvah campers are rehearsing their song for the upcoming camp-wide Zimriyah (song festival). Now it is winter. Lake Ellis is frozen solid. Out on the surface of the lake a group of adults are trying out ice fishing. They aren’t very good at it, but bonding is the point of their Board retreat. Another group is having an intense discussion in a well-appointed (but still campy!) meeting room off the new

chadar ochel (dining hall), and they smell the savory food that is being prepared for their lunch. Several of the people attending the meeting have been to the Ramah Berkshires Year-Round Retreat Center before, but for some, this experience with the beautiful winter landscape in Wingdale is new and it is inspiring. They will certainly be back. As anyone who has been to Camp over the last few years knows, some of the things I just described are imagined, not actual. They are concrete examples of what it could look like, sound like, and feel like, when we succeed in achieving the ambitious vision we set forth in our Strategic Plan. Of course, there is a lot between here and there, between now and then; it will take a lot of time, a lot of effort, and a lot of investment to bring these dreams to fruition. But I believe the Ramah Berkshires community will not shy away from the time, the effort, or the investment needed to create excellent programming for our campers, exceptional staff experiences, and flexible, contemporary facilities. Ramah was created as an engine of innovation, as a place of inspiration, and as a font of reinvigoration. These goals are needed now more than ever. The year-long work on our Strategic Plan has shown the way forward in programming, in staffing, and in facilities. The time has come to take our first steps together as a community. Please join us. Rabbi Ethan Linden Director

OUR MISSION Camp Ramah in the Berkshires is a vibrant summer camp community, where children grow in a beautiful and safe setting, surrounded by life-long friends and nurtured by spirited role models. From sports to the arts, swimming to outdoor adventure, camp is infused with the best of the traditions and values of Conservative Judaism: love of mitzvoth, Hebrew language, and the land and people of Israel; commitment to inclusion and Tikun Olam; and the joy of learning and prayer.

A MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT RICHIE FRIEDMAN For many of us who went to Camp or worked in Camp, our yesterdays sometimes really feel like just yesterday. Or at most, like a week ago. We remember—like it was yesterday—sitting on the basketball court together with the whole Camp as we heard the chanting of Eicha on Tisha B’av. We remember Friday night z’mirot (songs), the words to our edah play lyrics and the Camp songs, the color of our swim tags, and our favorite selections from the chanutiyah (canteen).

Words simply cannot explain the extent to which my son felt included as part of a community in his bunk, his edah and the camp as a whole. He formed meaningful friendships...in a way that has rarely happened in the previous 12 years of his life.”

For those of us who are now Camp parents or grandparents, our todays are filled with joy as we see the excitement on our children’s faces when they say birkat hamazon (Grace after Meals) on Friday evening “like they do in Camp,” or when they get a group text from their bunkmates or their chug teammates. Our todays are filled with questions ranging from the pragmatic (How many pairs of socks can one kid really need? Why am I not getting more letters?), to the more theoretical (What kind of friends will my child find? What will my child bring back from their summer at Camp that will impact both them and our family?). When we see our kids in Camp while visiting on Yom Hachnasat Orchim (Visiting Day), and when we hear the many Camp stories upon their return at the end of the summer, we witness for ourselves the powerful impact Camp is having on our loved ones and on their 750+ peers who spend time at CRB each summer. And for those of us who are involved with Camp’s leadership, who think about Camp 24/7/365, we know that the wonderful memories of yesterday, and the amazing impact we are having today, are really just a foundation for what we want for tomorrow. Since passing our Strategic Plan last year, we have moved into our implementation phase, beginning the on-the-ground work to build the Ramah Berkshires of tomorrow. Our plans and our dreams are exciting and inspiring. We have ambitious goals, to strengthen and grow our beloved camp, while also expanding our impact and reach. We know we can continue to give our current campers a transformative experience each summer, while endeavoring to bring the magic of Ramah Berkshires to more children, more families, more young adults, and more Jewish communities. With your help, these dreams for tomorrow can and will be realized. Thank you for your generosity. Thank you for your commitment to our community and our mission. And, thank you for your partnership, yesterday, today, and tomorrow. Richie Friedman President

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS FROM KAYITZ 2019 “WON’T YOU BE MY NEIGHBOR?” Our Camp kehillah (community) is filled with people of many different talents, backgrounds, and expertise, who make-up our unique and special “neighborhood” for two-months each summer. This summer, through interviews and conversation, our A-side campers enjoyed exploring our kehillah as a part of their yahadut (Jewish learning) experience. The campers began this project discussing and identifying the values, people, and elements a Jewish kehillah needs to successfully function. They then spent time interviewing various members of the tzevet (staff), to learn more about their roles and connections to Camp. Did you know that the kitchen staff begins working at 2 AM on mornings when pancakes are served for breakfast? Did you know that some of our summer and year-round staff members have been at Camp since they were campers in Adat HaCochavim—our youngest age group? As a culmination of the project, the campers put together a beautiful book highlighting the stories of the many people in our kehillah.

THE VOICES OF KOL RAMAH LEAVING OUR IMPRINT—A MEANINGFUL TISHA B'AV As part of our Camp-wide observance of Tisha B’Av this summer, each edah (division) took time to reflect on the experience and impact of destruction through a special Geniza project. After years of use, many sacred texts, books, and objects at Camp had become damaged and unusable. By tzrif (bunk), the campers selected one of these no-longer-useable items and wrote a note of thanks to it: for its service, for the Torah it taught them, and for the impact it had on the kehillah (community). The campers then went through the process of burying the sacred objects, capped off by each camper collecting a rock, and decorating it with a picture or word, declaring the positive impact they each pledge to leave in the world. The stones were then placed around the burial area, so that this sacred area is now surrounded by hundreds of decorated stones that honor the legacy of the texts and objects that were buried, and celebrate the strength and beauty of the Ramah Berkshires community.

Kol Ramah 102.3, the official radio station of Camp Ramah in the Berkshires, turned up the knob this summer with dozens of produced podcasts. B-side campers who participated in this elective identified topics of interest and sought out people within Camp who were “experts” on these topics. By the end of the summer, four podcast series debuted on Kol Ramah: “Voice for the Voiceless,” “Africa Hebraica,” “Parasha Talk,” and “Songs, Laughs and Friendly Debates.” “Voice for the Voiceless” explored topics of class and the Jewish value of achrayut (responsibility), while “Africa Hebraica” allowed staff members from Africa to share their stories of being Jewish in small African Jewish communities. “Parasha Talk” taught the Camp community about the weekly Torah portion from the perspective of different staff members, while “Songs, Laughs and Friendly Debates” gave different tzrifim (bunks) the opportunity to come onto the radio to discuss various pop culture topics and to debate in a friendly, welcoming and open environment. We are proud that our podcasts have been recognized by the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System for several years. Listen to the full podcasts and more! http://kolramah.us/

Ramah continues to create a real Jewish community that my children feel a part of.”

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS FROM KAYITZ 2019 ADAT HAGESHER RUNS YOM SPORT Yom Sport (“Color War”), one of the most anticipated and exciting days of every kayitz (summer), was brought to a new level this summer, as it was—for the first time ever—planned, organized and led by our Gesher campers. From the beginning of the summer, the Gesher edah worked together to select the theme of the day, to plan activities, to prepare supplies, and to write team cheers and songs. They then made their vision a reality as they facilitated one of the most successful Yom Sport days in Ramah Berkshires history. Every camper in Adat HaGesher took on a leadership role in planning and running the day, and the rest of the campers were excited to participate in the events of the day planned by their older peers. One of the highlights of the day was the banner making process; from the infusion of Judaism into the designs, to the cooperative participation from campers of all ages, and the beautifully completed banners displayed from every team at the closing ceremony, Camp ruach (spirit) truly radiated in every way. Kol HaKavod, Adat HaGesher 2019!

We are thrilled that we are able to send all of our children to Ramah. The Jewish values and traditions they are learning are immeasurable.”

ULTIMATE PEACE FRISBEE CLINIC

GRANDPARENTS DAY In early August we welcomed 250 grandparents to Camp for our first-ever Grandparents Day. Attendees were welcomed with song, music, and performances by campers and staff. Keynote Speaker and Camp Educator Ariel Burger, winner of the National Jewish Book Award for Witness: Lessons from Elie Wiesel’s Classroom, gave a wonderful presentation to the group, and many had the chance to speak with him one-onone throughout the event. The guests enjoyed a wonderful lunch followed by delicious in-house baked desserts and a special visit with their camper grandchildren. One grandparent summed up the experience beautifully: “Thank you to everyone involved in organizing and running this wonderful day. We enjoyed very much and were grateful for the opportunity to visit the camp grounds and listen to the testimony of past and present campers. We would also like to express our appreciation and thanks to Camp Ramah for providing our grandchildren a happy summer experience enriched with Jewish learning and nurtured love for Israel.”

Ultimate Peace, an organization that uses the sport of Ultimate Frisbee to teach Israelis and Palestinians about coexistence, joined us at Camp to run a special multi-day clinic for our Ultimate Frisbee team. This organization runs clinics that teach participants to find common goals, and to use conflict resolution skills through the rules and guidelines of the game. Their strategy highlights the key element of this self-refereed game: players who must call their fouls honestly and resolve disputes together. Upon the completion of these clinics, our campers had built upon their Ultimate Frisbee skills, as well as established a stronger foundation and understanding of both the Israeli-Palestinan conflict and conflict resolution.

GROW & BEHOLD PARTNERSHIP Wolfoods, our food service provider, partnered this past summer with Grow and Behold, a Brooklyn-based company that produces premium meat and poultry on family farms, to provide kosher pasture-fed meat in our chadar ochel (dining hall). The goal was to enrich the dining experience at Camp, while simultaneously enhancing the community’s environmental consciousness and care. While there was initial hesitation about our ability to bring this partnership to Camp due to higher costs, Grow and Behold and Wolfoods were able to reach an agreement that made it possible to provide this meat at a price comparable to the cost of meat in past summers. The result: delicious hamburgers, meatballs, kofta kabobs, and taco meat that greatly enhanced our weekly menu, while reinforcing our Jewish commitment to care for the environment!

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS FROM KAYITZ 2019 FILM FESTIVAL

TA’AM AGAM—A "TASTE" OF THE LAKE

This summer, we were delighted to expand our Omanut (arts) program to include a robust digital media activity area. This expanded program gave campers the experience of creating, writing, directing, and producing short films. The culmination of this project led to the first-ever Ramah Berkshires Film Festival that brought the whole camp together to view and celebrate these wonderful camper-created works of art! During this exciting event, campers and staff dressed up, walked along a red carpet with cameras flashing in front of the Camp logo, and then spent the evening watching, laughing, and cheering through the films with, of course, popcorn in hand.

One of our favorite vistas in Camp is from the top of the amphitheater looking towards the agam (lake). And one of the favorite program areas in Camp for campers of all ages is the agam itself. This summer, through a newly added elective, campers had the opportunity to explore the fun, excitement and beauty of the agam, beyond instructional swim. During Ta’am Agam (“Taste of the Lake”), campers had the opportunity to go boating in the canoes and kayaks, to test their balance on the water logs and stand-up paddle boats, to climb and jump from the water toys, and even to put together a full synchronized swimming routine. We look forward to continuing to build upon the agam activities, and providing more areas of exploration and enjoyment at the agam.

AROUND THE COMMUNITY 10 FOR 2: BRINGING CAMP PROGRAMS TO SYNAGOGUES AND DAY SCHOOLS The phrase “10 for 2” is a popular theme in the Jewish summer camp world; campers and staff members live their 10 school and work months in constant anticipation of the best 2 months of the year—at Camp!

out into the community. While summer will remain a sacred time of year and nothing will replace the experience of being in Camp, this program will allow synagogues and Jewish Day Schools to experience the unique type of learning our campers love. The programming ranges from tefilah (prayer) and holiday programs, to a life-size game of Clue, and a Passover-themed interactive game called “Escape from Egypt.” This initiative is off to a successful start, and will allow us to “bring Camp” to more than a dozen schools and synagogues this year.

JOSH WARSHAWSKY’S MUSIC AND TORAH To build off of this love, this fall we kicked-off a newly established program called, “Bring Camp to Your Community!” The idea of this program is to create excitement around Camp by bringing a taste of Camp's fun and innovative Jewish experiential education

This summer, we welcomed back to Camp Jewish musician, songleader, composer, and teacher of Torah, Rabbi Josh Warshawsky. During Josh’s week-long stay at Ramah Berkshires, he facilitated musical electives, provided a musical tefilah (prayer) experience for every edah (division), led

INVESTING IN OUR STAFF staff programs, shared his voice and leadership at the Friday night staff tisch, and enhanced many peulot erev (evening activities) and other activities with song, Torah, and musical expertise. The week culminated with a Camp-wide concert, where campers who participated in Josh’s musical elective performed the songs they had written and composed. The Ramah Berkshires and Josh Warshawsky partnership continued into the fall, when we co-sponsored a Scholar-in-Residence weekend with Rabbi Warshawsky at Conservative Synagogue Adath Israel of Riverdale (CSAIR). It was a well attended weekend,

and—no surprise—the culminating Saturday evening concert was packed with Ramah Berkshires’ campers, parents, alumni and staff.

We have been extremely happy with the camp over many years for all of our boys as campers and counselors, and feel extremely fortunate to have the Ramah community as such an important part of our boys’ lives.”

THE HEALTHY CHALLENGE The physical and mental health of our staff is a top-priority, and is something that helps to ensure a successful and positive summer experience for our campers. One of the ways we supported and encouraged a healthy staff community this summer was by implementing “The Healthy Challenge.” Every staff member was given a checklist of items to help them track and stay attuned to their physical, mental, social, emotional, and spiritual health during the summer.

To kickstart this program, personal trainer and current Camp parent, Ilana Milstein, joined us during shavua hachanah (staff

preparation week) to meet with staff members individually to advise them in designing a plan to help maintain a healthy lifestyle under the constraints of a busy day-to-day Camp schedule. Staff members were encouraged throughout the summer to continue with their plan, keeping the priority of a healthy lifestyle in mind.

In designing this curriculum, there was also a focus on enhancing the programming opportunities for the staff, allowing them to enjoy their summer experience beyond their work responsibilities, and building a tight-knit and supportive staff community.

STAFF YOETZ (ADVISOR) In order to create a more direct line of support and guidance for our staff members, this summer we established a new “Staff Yoetz” position to focus on just that. Kenny Gold, a Ramah Berkshires alum, current Camp parent, and college professor of education, worked to develop an in-depth staff training curriculum. Kenny met with first-year staff members, as well as our veteran staff, to give them the space and tools to think more critically about their work, and to develop and strengthen their skills.

A NEW YEAR-ROUND POSITION: DIRECTOR, STAFF EXPERIENCE As an outgrowth of our Strategic Plan, we are focused on enhancing the staff experience and culture, and on being more intentional with staff training and support, from the interview process to the final days of the summer. In order to be

successful in these efforts, this year we established a new year-round position: Director, Staff Experience. This position allows for an in-depth focus on staff development and training, and will prioritize providing a full and complete experience for staff, from their onboarding during the year through their work at Camp in the summer. This new position will also allow us to maintain staff engagement throughout the year and to retain a high percentage of staff from summer-to-summer. Ayelet Teitelbaum took on this exciting new role in September (read more about Ayelet on p. 13). We are proud to be implementing this position—a role that is cutting-edge for overnight summer camps—in order to ensure that our staff members have the most excellent experience while working for Camp.

STAFF HIGHLIGHTS AMIRIT ROSEN & RABBI DAVID GOODMAN

Amirit Rosen and her husband, Rabbi David Goodman, left their home in Israel for two months to join the Ramah Berkshires community this past summer. With Orot, their adorable twoyear-old daughter in tow, and the desire to share their passion and expertise with others, Amirit and David were ecstatic to be part of our 2019 tzevet (staff). David, an ordained rabbi from Har'el Beit Midrash in Jerusalem, was excited to come to Camp to expand our radio program, a special interest of his that he has pursued over the past ten years. Amirit, currently a rabbinical student

at Machon Schechter (the Conservative rabbinical school in Jerusalem) enjoyed her mornings as a yoetzet tefilah (prayer coordinator) on A-side, spent a few hours a day in Camp’s Beit Midrash studying Talmud with our Scholar-in-Residence, and couldn’t wait to spend every afternoon working with campers on the farm. Though Amirit and David grew up just minutes away from each other in Jerusalem, they first met as adults as they were both pursuing a career path as rabbis. Their love for Jewish learning, community, embracing Jewish values, and helping others has led them to many exciting communities and experiences together. We benefited greatly as they brought their different skills and talents to Camp this summer. Over the past few years, David has become interested in exploring different cultures and social groups, and finding ways to tell their stories through radio production. He brought this concept to Camp

WELCOME (BACK) TO CAMP, YONI SAPOSH AND AYELET TEITELBAUM! this summer by introducing a podcast-production series for our older campers. David challenged the kids to think beyond themselves and to choose topics that would allow them to learn more about other cultures and social groups. With David’s guidance, the campers produced several podcasts to tell the stories of different cultures and individuals across Camp to the rest of the community (see p. 5 for more). Amirit developed an immense amount of knowledge on caring for the land and food production from her time studying at the Arava Institute in Israel. She taught our campers how to take care of the earth with intention and care, and helped them find a Jewish connection to the land and to the food grown on the farm. She also enjoyed her time every morning during tefilah (prayer) with some of our younger campers, helping them find ways to deepen their connections to tefilah, and creating a space for everyone to feel comfortable

and engaged. A highlight of Amirit’s role as the yoetzet tefilah, was teaching young campers about the significance of wrapping tefilin, as she modeled in her own practice. Amirit was delighted to provide tefilah inspiration and connection to so many of our campers.

We were delighted to welcome Amirit, David, and Orot to the Ramah Berkshires family in Kayitz 2019 and look forward to having them back in Wingdale for Kayitz 2020!

This year, we welcomed (back) to Camp two former campers and staff members, as they joined the Ramah Berkshires year-round staff. Yoni Saposh (Gesher ‘95) joined the team as Chief Operating Officer and Ayelet (Rabinowitz) Teitelbaum (Gesher ‘96) as Director, Staff Experience.

“I realized that if we can find a way to strengthen the independent confident thinking of our children and young staff, then they will be better off and the American Jewish community and America as a whole will be better off. ”

After 18 years as a Managing Director at BlackRock, a global investment firm, Yoni decided to switch gears and bring his finance, operations, and organizational leadership skills to the nonprofit world. More specifically, back to the place where he spent many years as a child and young adult: Camp Ramah in the Berkshires. Yoni had never strayed far from Ramah Berkshires: he met his wife, Arielle (Greenbaum) Saposh, at Camp, they are annual Labor Day Alumni Weekend participants, and their older daughters have been enrolled as campers in recent years. Additionally, before taking on this staff position, Yoni served on our Board for several years, most recently co-chairing our Strategic Planning committee. Yoni joined the team just before Camp started this summer, and we are thrilled and lucky to have him. Ayelet has called Camp Ramah in the Berkshires "home" since she was a first-time camper in Adat HaCochavim. When the opportunity to join the year-round team arose, Ayelet and her husband, Jeff (also a Ramah Berkshires alum), were ecstatic to return to Camp, a

place where they both have a deep connection and long family history. Prior to returning to Camp, Ayelet has worked in Human Resources in various corporate settings, most recently as the Senior HR Business Partner at TD Ameritrade. Ayelet is excited to be able to bring her skills and knowledge to this newly established Camp position, and to focus on the growth and development of the Ramah Berkshires staff experience. She is looking forward to spending her summers back at Camp, and especially excited for her three children to become Ramahniks. We are delighted to have Ayelet on the year-round team, and to have her back at Camp!

Bruchim Ha’Baim, Yoni and Ayelet!

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHTS RAMAH BERKSHIRES ALUMNI IN THE 2019 NACHSHON PROJECT FELLOWSHIP The Nachshon Project, an organization whose mission is to inspire and empower Jewish young-adults to embark on a journey of professional Jewish leadership, welcomed two Ramah Berkshires alumni to the 2019 Nachshon Project Fellowship: Paul Horvath (Gesher ‘14 and a current senior at Princeton University) and Micaela Raviv (Gesher ‘14 and a current senior at Brown University). The two spent their 2019 spring semesters in Jerusalem, as participants in this prestigious fellowship. During the semester, they attended classes at Hebrew University and participated in weekly leadership training programs and monthly Shabbatonim with The Nachshon Project. As part of the fellowship, Paul and Micaela worked on creating Israel-themed educational programs to bring back to Camp.

Micaela spoke about the impact of the fellowship: “Being a fellow for The Nachshon Project has been an invaluable opportunity to complement my 10 years at Camp. Ramah Berkshires fostered my Jewish identity, connection with Israel, and polished my leadership skills. The Nachshon Project allowed me to grow as a Jew, as a leader, and as a Jewish leader.” Paul and Micaela are also facilitating Israel-themed educational projects this year on their respective college campuses. We are proud that our alumni were selected for this special program, and we are grateful for the skills and knowledge they brought back to the Camp community.

HONORING 24 YEARS OF THE RAMAH BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION (RBA) SARA BLAU, DILLER TIKKUN OLAM AWARD RECIPIENT

Last year, Sara Blau (Gesher ‘17) was awarded the Diller Tikkun Olam Award. This amazing award, presented by The Helen Diller Family Foundation, celebrates tikkun olam (“repairing the world”) and supports Jewish teen leaders making a positive impact in the global community. While hundreds of applicants from across the country apply each year, only fifteen are selected and recognized for their exceptional leadership. Sara was recognized for establishing Game Changers New York (GCNY), a 501c3 non-profit organization whose mission is to empower disadvantaged

youth around the world by providing them with opportunities to become athletes. The idea grew from Sara’s love of playing sports, and her desire to give underserved youth the same opportunities she had growing up. GCNY collects and donates sports equipment to children locally and globally. To date, Game Changers has donated over 6,500 pieces of sports equipment, worth over $100,000, to over 25 partner organizations in six countries. As a recipient of the Diller Tikkun Olam Award, Sara was recognized at a national ceremony, and awarded a $36,000 college scholarship. We are thrilled that Sara brought her leadership skills back to Camp this summer as a first-year counselor, and we look forward to having her back in Kayitz 2020! Mazal Tov, Sara!

In the early 1990’s, several dozen young adults gathered every Shabbat afternoon in a park on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, to remember and relive their Shabbat afternoons of playing basketball at Ramah Berkshires. After several years and lots of talk among the players of, “we should form a league,” a small group of alumni worked together to find court space and figure out the logistics, and then recruited Camp friends to form teams and the league. The first season of RBA launched on a Sunday evening in October of 1996, with forty players and four teams at Chelsea Piers. Each team’s members wore their own

blue or white t-shirts, and the league refereed its own games. The teams gathered weekly through April, many bringing along friends and family members for what became a weekly Ramah reunion. The league’s championship trophy was named the “Jerry Cup,” in honor of Ramah Berkshires Director Rabbi Jerry Abrams z”l, and Rabbi Abrams himself presented the trophy to the winning team. The RBA was an instant success, and in year two grew to six teams, and then to eight teams in year three. Ultimately, the league grew to include ten teams with eight players on each. Over the years the league has evolved: there are now professional referees at every game, the teams are each sponsored by a community business or organization, and the players proudly wear real basketball jerseys displaying their team’s name. While the league was initially limited to Ramah Berkshires alumni (due to space limitations), in the early 2000’s the RBA formally expanded to include players who were Ramah

Berkshires spouses or alumni of other Ramah camps. Now in its 24th season, the RBA is one of the Ramah Berkshires alumni community’s most treasured programs. Hundreds have played in the league, it inspired a Ramah Poconos Basketball League in Philadelphia, and sparked the start of a Ramah Berkshires softball team that also hopes to one day grow into a league. The most recent innovation of the RBA was the launching of an annual “3's Tournament” at Camp in August 2019. The RBA fills up quickly each year, and players represent a range of ages, Gesher years, and Ramah connections. Even with the changes, the RBA has, at its essence, remained the same: an incredible space where Ramah alumni continue to connect, to grow, to have fun, and to stay a part of each other’s lives well beyond their years as campers and staff members. We were honored to pay tribute to the RBA and its participants and leaders at our 2019 Annual Gala.

Thanks to the support of CRB alumni, board members, parents, grandparents, community members, and friends, during our 2019 Fiscal Year we raised $775,548 for our Annual Fund. Our generous donors gave through our Annual Gala and our summer Golf Outing. Many members of the CRB community chose to support Camp in honor of a simcha or in memory of a loss. Others donated to special funds, including the Camp Improvement Fund,

Staff Appreciation Fund, Breira Fund, Gesher Fund, and the Eric Steinthal z”l Memorial Fund. We are grateful for the generosity and steadfast dedication of our supporters. This year we opened two new funds, in memory of two special members of the Ramah Berkshires community: The Jon Woocher z”l Scholarship Fund, and The Elissa Queen z”l Fund (see descriptions on p. 20 and 23). Gifts to these funds, as well as payments to our Art Opens Doors capital campaign fund, are noted in the donor list (p. 20–26).

Philanthropic support of Ramah Berkshires enables us to strengthen and grow our Camp program, to train our staff, to bring new and innovative programming to Camp, and to give hundreds of Jewish children this magical summer experience. Every gift to Camp’s Annual Fund allows us to meet the needs of more camper families applying for aid, removing financial obstacles, and giving more Jewish children the, otherwise inaccessible, life-changing Ramah experience.

JON WOOCHER Z”L AS A RAMAH BERKSHIRES CAMPER

REMEMBERING JON WOOCHER Z”L For decades, Dr. Jonathan S. Woocher z”l was regarded as one of the world's leading Jewish educational leaders and scholars. His life’s work in Jewish education and innovation included roles as President and Chief Ideas Officer of JESNA and as President of the Lippman Kanfer Foundation for Living Torah. Jon and his work influenced and inspired generations of Jewish educators. But where did it all begin? According to his wife Sherry Woocher: Camp Ramah in the Berkshires, where Jon was a camper and staff member for many years. Sherry considers Ramah Berkshires the place that truly sparked and inspired Jon’s love of Jewish life and learning. It is also the place

where Jon and Sherry met, so it holds a particularly special meaning to Sherry as well. In 2019, Sherry generously established the “Jon Woocher Scholarship Fund” to provide partial and full camper scholarships each summer, specifically supporting children of Jewish community professionals and educators. Ramah Berkshires epitomizes the values Jon promoted throughout his career, as it functions as a living laboratory for innovative, experiential, and transformative Jewish educational experiences. As a place that has inspired and influenced generations of Jewish educators and leaders, it is fitting that the Woocher family has committed to help support the impact Ramah Berkshires will have on the next generation. We are grateful to Jon and Sherry’s friends, family members, colleagues, and students who have contributed to this fund as a way to keep Jon’s memory and legacy alive.

Please note: the list below represents gifts made to Ramah Berkshires between October 1, 2018 and December 31, 2019 w = Donation includes a gift to the Jon Woocher z”l Scholarship Fund q = Donation includes a gift to the Elissa Queen z”l Fund a = Donation includes a gift to the Art Opens Doors campaign

REMEMBERING ELISSA QUEEN Z"L Elissa Queen came to Camp Ramah in the Berkshires in 1993 as the rikkud (dancing) instructor. With her four daughters in tow, it was incredibly important to Elissa and her husband Alan to give their children the Ramah experience, and to allow them to develop their Jewish identities and discover a love of Judaism. That summer, the Queen family established what would become a life-long multigenerational connection to Ramah Berkshires. Over the course of her decade working in Camp, Elissa’s passion and love for dancing grew, and she brought this passion and love into her work with campers, especially through the annual Rikudiyah (dance festival). Almost 30 years later, Camp Ramah remains the most

significant and defining experience for the entire family, with three of her four daughters meeting their spouses through Ramah, and 10 grandchildren who are all current or future Ramahniks. The entire Ramah Berkshires community mourned the death of Elissa Queen in June 2019. In a fitting tribute to her memory, the Queen family established the Elissa Queen z”l Memorial Fund, to support the work of Ramah Berkshires, in particular Camp's rikkud program. We are grateful for the outpouring of support of this fund in tribute to Elissa's love of Ramah. Her memory and legacy will indeed remain a blessing for our entire Ramah Berkshires mishpacha (family) for decades to come.
