“Camp Ramah in the Berkshires shaped my Jewish life forever. My children are multi-generational Ramahniks. It has shaped who they are and what matters to them most. CRB is their forever happy place. ANN ZISSER Alumna and parent

A MESSAGE FROM RABBI ETHAN LINDEN

OUR MISSION

One of the great things about Camp Ramah in the Berkshires is that the best moments can happen anywhere and at any time. For me, that moment last summer was an August evening during the rikudiya (our camp-wide dance festival) when I looked out over a sea of people and realized that virtually every person in the stadium courts was having a fabulous time dancing to Static and Ben-El’s earworm of a song called “Kawaii.”

Camp Ramah in the Berkshires is a vibrant summer camp community, where children grow in a beautiful and safe setting, surrounded by life-long friends and nurtured by spirited role models. From sports to the arts, swimming to outdoor adventure, camp is infused with the best of the traditions and values of Conservative Judaism: love of mitzvoth, Hebrew language, and the land and people of Israel; commitment to inclusion and Tikun Olam; and the joy of learning and prayer.

The song itself doesn’t actually make much sense, and it hardly carries a deep meaning. But as I watched from the stage, as nearly every camper and staff member moved in perfect harmony (although some are surely better dancers than others!) I could not help but be deeply moved. There was joy on every face, a joy that floated up through the humid air and made the entire place crackle with an electric feeling of community and joined purpose. We gather together in Wingdale every summer for precisely these moments. And these moments can be different for everyone. For some they happen on a sports field, and for some in the omanut (arts) building. Some people have their moments on the Appalachian Trail as they hike back towards Camp, and some when they step onto the stage in front of the entire Camp to belt out a Disney tune in Hebrew. For some, these moments happen during quieter times in their tzrifim (bunks) or just sitting on the beach of the agam (lake) as the sun sets, lighting up the water and the sky. We do not always know when these moments of connection and joy will occur, but we know that the people and the place make them possible. And that is why we do the work we do: to give our staff and our campers the chance to have moments that will fill their hearts and nourish their souls. Moments that they will be able to return to in their mind’s eye again and again, even when their lives carry them far from us. It is an honor and privilege to be engaged in that work, and I thank everyone who gives of their time, their passion, and their resources to help us create a Camp of joyful moments. “[My wife and I] met at Berkshires so we knew our daughter had a running start, but you never know how different people will react to being there for an entire summer. Julia loved her time there and is counting the days until she gets to go back.” SIMMY KUSTANOWITZ CRB Alumnus and parent of Julia, Shorashim ‘19

A LETTER FROM PRESIDENT RICHIE FRIEDMAN When I worked in Camp in the late 70’s and early 80’s, we spent most of our time focused on the camper experience. We discussed how we should wake the campers up in the morning, how we as a bunk should work together to keep our bunk clean, and even how to handle the group dynamics of dealing with spilled milk at our lunch table. And on the last Shabbat of every summer, I remember spending time talking about how we—both staff and campers—could all bring what we learned at Camp home with us. The questions we had were practical and important, and ones we still value today. But the questions I never heard discussed, that we never talked about with our staff or campers, were the bigger picture questions about our purpose and future as a camp. These are the topics that have become central to most of our Board discussions this year. As we began the process of Strategic Planning for the coming years, the key questions we examined are: How can CRB be the leading edge and catalyst for the renewal of American Judaism’s vital center? Given that we fill camp each summer with a high percentage of returning campers, how do we grow to reach greater numbers of campers while maintaining our commitment to meeting high standards of excellence? Recognizing the changing face of Conservative Judaism, how do we adapt to create joyful, inclusive and participatory Jewish experiences? While we may not yet have complete answers to these questions, what is clear is that only with your help can we really create an organization that combines a truly great camping experience with a commitment to addressing these issues and ideas. Whether you are an alum, a current or former parent or grandparent, or someone who simply believes in the dynamic and transformative Jewish educational experience that is Ramah Berkshires, now is an exciting and amazing time to involved. The wonderful and joyful moments that together we will create this summer and beyond for our campers will be as numerous as the stars in the sky. And the opportunity that we all have now, to build on what we have been given, fills me with so much excitement. Thank you for your continued partnership as we work together to create a bright and amazing future for Ramah Berkshires. Richie Friedman President, Camp Ramah in the Berkshires

“My friends at Camp bring me the most happiness and joy. They make Camp my home. They are my family. Just spending time with them makes me happier than anything else.” ABBY STERN (GESHER 2018) ANNUAL REPORT 2018 | 3

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS FROM KAYITZ 2018 ALL-NIGHT BEIT MIDRASH Our Machon campers (rising ninth-graders) had the chance to experience a marathon of Torah study with the first Ramah Berkshires “All-Night Beit Midrash.” The campers spent the entire night learning together, eating special snacks, and having a great time bonding as an edah. Campers learned from a variety of teachers, including members of their own edah tzevet (staff) and Rabbi Linden. Topics ranged from “Why Does the Torah Even Have Laws About Slaves?,” to “Judaism and Mental Health.” All but three campers stayed up all night learning! Rosh Edah (and current JTS rabbinical student) Noam Kornsgold commented: “It was spectacular to watch the campers really dig deeply into their learning! When else do campers, or people in general, get to spend so much time learning Torah, especially in a place that they love so much? The All-Night Beit Midrash represented Camp at its best: when we take traditional and authentic Jewish concepts and frame them in ways that are accessible and exciting for campers.”

STEAM Each summer, our STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) program continues to grow. In 2018 we launched a new Engineering and Design “Intensive,” giving campers in the older edot an extended period of time each week to work collaboratively in our Maker Space to design fun and practical devices. One fabulous result: a “Tubulum” (a PVC pipe organ) that was designed, built, and decorated by a small group of campers. The Tubulum was set up to play a C-scale of notes when a player struck the tops of the PVC pipes with foam paddles (for this purpose the campers decided to use flip flops). The instrument was decorated to add to the whimsical nature of the sound it produces and the fun it is to play it.

MAKOR What do giant inflatable bowling pins, flying sponges, and silent “dabbing” have in common? They were all a part of our newest program, “Makor” (Makor = Machane Aleph Kef V’Ruach—A-Side Fun and Spirit). Every day, in the early afternoon following sha’at menucha (rest time), all of our A-side campers (representing our youngest four edot, grades 4-7) gathered for twenty wild minutes of zaniness and friendly competition. Makor emerged from a desire to strengthen edah pride and unity in an effort to build stronger tight-knit communities within the larger machanewide community. Combined with our desire to bring more random silliness into the camp day, the idea of hosting a daily fun and crazy competition between edot was born. Each day the challenges were wackier than the last—from Blindfolded Ball Hunting, to a Bucket Brigade, to Giant Inflatable Bowling, to Human Battleship (that somehow involved tossing dozens of wet sponges over giant tarps onto the opposing team). As you might imagine, Makor was an instant hit!

ARTS CLINIC Each summer features a multi-day “Arts Clinic,” to bring guest artists and teachers into Camp to lead unique workshops, exposing campers to diverse forms of artistic expression. In 2018, our Arts Clinic featured returning favorites and new offerings, including Sewing, Comic Book drawing, Circus Arts, Robotics, Drumming, Improv Comedy, and Mentalist & Magic training. Many of these workshops were able to make use of the supplies and spaces in our beautiful new Omanut Building. Our campers had an amazing time throughout, learning new skills and creating beautiful crafts and works of art.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS FROM KAYITZ 2018 FARMING Our farming program continues to blossom and grow each summer! Our campers loved working with the huge vegetable garden, especially when they were able to harvest produce for use in their “Farm to Table” cooking class! The animal farm is another favorite, and campers once again enjoyed visiting with, and learning to take care of, the bunnies, chickens, goats, and pigs! In 2018, we added two amazing components to our farming program: a horizontal hydroponic garden, and beekeeping! The hydroponic garden is part of a larger “Greenhouse Project” brought to CRB by an Israeli organization dedicated to giving children an encounter with environmental responsibility within the context of Jewish values and texts. The beekeeping gave campers a unique chance to learn about how to care for bees and how to foster the honey production process. We can’t wait to get back to the CRB farm in 2019!

GUEST EDUCATOR DARA HORN We were delighted to have Award-Winning Novelist— and CRB Alumna and Parent—Dara Horn spend a week teaching yahadut (Judaics) classes to several different groups of campers. She engaged the campers in an interactive workshop focused on the Talmudic story of Rabbi Yochanan Ben Zakkai’s escape from Jerusalem during the Roman siege. Each group spent the week studying the text and then designing a creative theatrical retelling of the story to present to their whole edah. Dara’s classes were without question a highlight of the summer for the participating campers, several of whom even “demanded” extra meeting time with Dara in order to continue working on their presentations! At the end of the week, Dara reflected on the campers in her groups: “I was astounded by their creativity and their enthusiasm, and how marvelously they engaged their peers in extremely imaginative Jewish learning!”

“CRB had a profound impact on the Jewish choices that my wife and I make in our lives. It is so moving to see CRB having such a powerful impact on our children as well. Our children— one camper and one counselor—simply love being in the CRB community. They come home fulfilled and only sad that their great summer experience had to come to an end.” ANNUAL REPORT 2018 | 7

MORE THAN A SUMMER CAMP COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS

CRB ON SEMINAR

Although we spend most of our time focusing on the summer experience, we also prioritize partnerships with community synagogues and schools yearround. This past year, Rabbi Ethan Linden had the chance to celebrate special Ramah Shabbatot at a number of congregations, including Temple Israel Center in White Plains, Congregation Beth El in South Orange, Temple Israel of Great Neck, Beth El Synagogue Center in New Rochelle, and Congregation Agudath Achim in Caldwell. Rabbi Linden also teaches three times a month at the “Open Beit Midrash” held at Beth El New Rochelle.

example, Director of Camper Care Karen Legman Segal spoke on a panel following a screening of the documentary, “Angst: Raising Awareness Around Anxiety,” at Agudath Achim in Caldwell, and Rabbi Ethan Linden moderated a panel discussion with experts and educators focused on, “Talking to Your Children about Sex and Sexuality,” at Solomon Schechter of Bergen County. Rabbi Linden explains the importance of these partnerships: “Part of our mission at Camp Ramah in the Berkshires is to partner with synagogues and schools in our region to find ways to expand Jewish learning and community.”

Ramah Berkshires has also been proud to co-sponsor a number of important community events over the past year. For

We look forward to expanding this type of community engagement and partnership in the coming years.

Each summer, we encourage our campers to spend their post-11th grade summers on Ramah Seminar, a sixweek Israel program for Ramah campers. Seminar participants travel Israel from north to south and gain an in-depth perspective on Israel’s history and future. Seminar is also an opportunity to continue living “Ramah-style,” combining central Camp experiences including tefillah (prayer), study, and Shabbat. CRB Alumna Elisheva Malomet reflected on her Seminar experience: “I created friendships with people from all over North America, bonding over connections to Israel and Ramah. I engaged in thought-provoking conversations and learned a lot about what it means to be a Jew.” We are proud that, for the past two summers, Ramah Berkshires has enrolled the highest percentage of alumni of any Ramah camp. We are also proud that, with your support, we are able to offer scholarships to enable every interested Berkshires graduate to participate in Seminar.

LIVNOT STAFF TRAINING FELLOWSHIP

AMITEI RAMAH TZEIRIM (ART)

This selective program, launched in 2017, is for Ramah Berkshires staff returning for second and third summers. Participants apply following their first summer on staff, and commit to returning to Camp for two additional summers. The cohort is brought together every 3-4 weeks (either in-person or online) for leadership development and high-level professional training. Each participant also works on a specific “Camp Improvement Project” of his/her choice throughout the year, and implements during the summer. This fellowship both helps with staff retention, and better prepares our staff members for excellence. It also creates a pipeline for leadership, as we are cultivating this group of staff members who will be the best prepared candidates for Rosh Edah positions upon their graduation from college. According to Paul Horvath, a Livnot participant, “This is an amazing program because there is lots of passion and excitement among the madrichim to work to build Camp for more than two months a year, and this gives them the opportunity to continue to make Camp the best it can be all year round.”

In 2018, we launched the Amitei Ramah Tzeirim (ART) fellowship. This program, sponsored by the National Ramah Commission, focuses on teen Jewish leadership training, opportunities for study, and volunteering in Jewish communities. Ten fellows were chosen from Gesher 2018 to participate. Each ART participant is implementing a personal project to enhance Jewish community engagement. One example: ART Fellows Ben Gutstein and Maya Rabinowitz planned an edah Shabbaton, modeled after a Camp Shabbat. They explained: “For some people, there can be challenges in keeping Shabbat at home, and teens who observe Shabbat sometimes feel like they miss out. At Camp, however, everyone observes Shabbat together and no one feels as though they are missing out on anything. Shabbat at Camp is easy and natural, which is why we want to recreate that feeling during the year. This Shabbaton is an opportunity to give back to the community and demonstrate to young families and children all that a Camp Ramah experience has to offer.” We are so proud of our ART Fellows, and can’t wait to see what they plan next!

OUR ALUMNI ALUMNI ASSOCIATION

A MATCH MADE AT RAMAH

Founded in 1990 as a way to provide scholarships to campers in needed, the Ramah Berkshires Alumni Association (RBAA) has developed into much more. The RBAA brings together alumni of all ages to reunite friends, to reminisce about the old days, and to strengthen alumni bonds with Ramah Berkshires. The RBAA is committed to supporting Camp to ensure tomorrow’s campers receive the best Jewish camping experience available by enhancing summer programming, supporting capital projects, and providing much needed scholarship money.

Debbie Kruger (Gesher ‘07) first met Robby Tepper (Gesher ‘08) at Ramah Berkshires in the summer of 2005 (despite having gone to camp together for three years prior) in an attempt to “set him up” with one of her friends. Neither one of them could have suspected that thirteen years later they would be surrounded by CRB friends, celebrating their wedding!

Throughout the year, the RBAA plans various events and activities for CRB Alumni to stay connected with Camp and each other. Annual highlights include the Ramah Basketball Association (RBA) league, Labor Day Alumni Weekend at Camp, the summer Golf Outing, and Yom Give Back (a day of community service). Each year, our alumni activities and network engage hundreds of CRB alumni!

While campers, Debbie and Robby both loved the Camp’s activities, especially Friday night shira and Yom Sport (Robbie’s lifelong dream of being a Yom Sport General finally came true his Gesher summer!). That said, they both recall that their favorite parts of Camp were the informal moments spent hanging out with friends in the bunks or on their porches, creating “deep and meaningful friendships” that they have sustained to this day. Between their summers as campers and their time on staff, Robby and Debbie have spent a combined 45 months at Ramah Berkshires!

Debbie

Robby

Since moving to New York after college, Debbie and Robby have pursued their careers—Robby in Crisis Communications and PR, and Debbie in Corporate Social Responsibility—and they have enjoyed New York City life, while also spending as much time as they can adventuring around the world. Robby and Debbie return to CRB as often as possible for Labor Day Weekend, and Debbie has become an active member of the Ramah Berkshires Alumni Association, as “Co-Rosh Giving Back.” Why do they stay so connected to CRB? “Our camp experiences truly shaped us into the people we are today. Without Camp, we would not have each other, our best friends in the world, or some of our fondest life memories. Staying involved with the Camp community just comes naturally, because Ramah is a huge part of who we are.”

GREENBAUM SISTERS When Marni (Greenbaum) Weinberg and her (now) husband were dating, sending their imagined future children to Ramah was non-negotiable. This summer, Marni’s oldest daughter Julie will realize this dream, as she starts her Berkshires journey in Cochavim. Julie is not, however, the first—or only—member of her family to become a camper! She will start Cochavim together with her cousin Nessa, and join her older cousins, Talia and Liat, both incoming Shorashim campers. These cousins follow in the footsteps of the first generation of Ramah Greenbaums, their moms: Marni (Gesher ‘99), Arielle Saposh (Gesher ‘96), and Erica Bank (Gesher ‘92). With the exception of a two-year gap, there was at least one Greenbaum at CRB every summer—as a camper or staff—from 1988-2004. The sisters had different CRB experiences: Erica played tennis, serving as captain of Chug Tennis; Arielle was not an athlete (she started “Chug Mitbachon” one summer to get out of sports!), but she loved Al HaGova and Friday night singing; and, while Marni also played tennis, her favorite part of Camp was working on the plays (she remembers Hebrew Mary Poppins songs to this day!). The sisters only all overlapped at Camp for four summers, but they have many shared memories. They met up weekly after Shabbat lunch (calling it, “sister hour”), and this time together was, according to Marni, “the most wonderful thing!” Arielle reflected, “Camp gave us the chance to get closer— we never fought and we took care of each other.”

The sisters have been away from Ramah for years, however the impact endures. Arielle’s closest friends today are her Camp connections; Erica regularly uses strategies and tools she learned on staff at Camp with her clients and coworkers; and Marni broadly says, “Camp is largely responsible for who I am today, who I married, and how we live our lives.” Additionally, all three sisters credit their time at Ramah as, “the single biggest driving force” behind the Jewish adults they are today. They all recount ways their Jewish lives and choices were shaped by Camp. Arielle explains, “As campers, my sisters and I would often come home and want to do more—whether it was saying havdalah each week or becoming more kosher. Camp showed me the benefits of living an observant Jewish life. Judaism is a major part of my life now as an adult and Ramah was the largest factor in making that happen.” Now that the Greenbaum sisters are passing the CRB torch to their four girls, they have high hopes, both for their individual experiences as well as for the ways being together will strengthen their relationships. Marni says, “I am SO excited for Julie to be in camp with her cousins and to experience the beauty that is Machane Ramah b’Berkshires!” Arielle hopes, “that my children will develop independence and love of Judaism that I did at Camp and make lifelong friendships.” And Erica sees another benefit: “I get to live vicariously through Talia and experience Ramah all over again!” We can’t wait to see the Greenbaum cousins in Kayitz 2019!

DAH RABA TO

Thanks to the support of CRB alumni, board members, parents, grandparents, community members, and friends, during our 2018 (10/1/17-9/30/18) Fiscal Year we raised $785,774 for our Annual Fund. Our generous donors gave through our Annual Dinner and our summer Golf Outing. Many members of the CRB community chose to support Camp in memory of a loss, or in honor of a simcha. And still others donated to special funds, including the Camp Improvement Fund, Staff Appreciation Fund, the Breira B’Ramah Fund, Gesher Fund, and the Eric Steinthal z’l Memorial Fund. We are grateful for the generosity and steadfast dedication of our supporters. Philanthropic support of Camp Ramah in the Berkshires enables us to strengthen and grow our camp program, to train our staff, to bring new and innovative programming to Camp, and to give hundreds of Jewish children the magical Ramah Berkshires experience. Every gift to Camp’s Annual Fund allows us to meet the need of more camper families applying for aid, removing financial obstacles, and giving more Jewish children the, otherwise inaccessible, lifechanging Ramah experience.

STRATEGIC PLAN

A MESSAGE FROM COMMITTEE CO-CHAIRS, ALISA RUBIN KURSHAN AND YONI SAPOSH Camp Ramah is ready for our future! We believe that we are at the right point in our development to aim high: to build upon excellence that we deliver; to inspire new cohorts of Jews to become role models and educators of the next generation of Ramahniks; and, to deepen and expand the imprint of Camp, reaching more Jewish families throughout the year. It is always a good idea for organizations to step back periodically and to create the space to think big. This past year, we did just that. Starting from a position of strength, the leadership of Camp Ramah in the Berkshires asked ourselves a series of difficult questions: How can CRB be the leading edge and catalyst for the renewal of American Judaism’s vital center? Given that we fill camp each summer with a very high percentage of returning campers, how do we grow to reach greater numbers of campers while maintaining our commitment to meeting high standards of excellence? Recognizing the changing face of Conservative Judaism, how do we adapt to create joyful, inclusive and participatory Jewish experiences?

We are delighted that, at the end of 2018, the CRB Board of Trustees unanimously approved a Strategic Plan for Ramah Berkshires, identifying key strategic priorities that will guide our work and focus in the coming years. This plan reflects the work of many individuals who contributed their insights and experiences. We spoke to leading Jewish and camping professionals, lay leaders, current and past staff members, rabbis, donors, parents, and more. We visited Camp, observed the facilities and the program, and spoke with many staff and campers. We were blessed to do this work with a committed group of committee members who conducted interviews, facilitated focus groups, and worked closely with us and the professional team to widen our lens and allow us to learn from diverse constituencies. This plan represents our learnings and recommendations for Camp Ramah. It is the first step in the next phase of our camp’s growth. We believe that working together we will be able to achieve the goals that will secure our future. To read the complete CRB Strategic Plan, visit www.ramahberkshires.org.

“ After attending weekly Hebrew school and going to temple, I was definitely aware of my Jewish heritage, but it was not until I started to go to Camp that it was instilled with Jewish values and I learned to embrace it. JACOB POPOLOW Machon 2018
