LITANY OF REMEMBRANCE AND THANKSGIVING

Amy Butler

Almighty God, before whom stand the living and the dead, we your children, whose mortal life is but a hand’s breadth, give thanks to you: For all those through whom you have blessed our pilgrimage, whose lives have empowered us, whose influence is a healing grace— We lift up thankful hearts.

For dear friends and family members whose faces we see no more, but whose love is with us forever— We lift up thankful hearts. For teachers and companions of our childhood and youth, for members of our household of faith who are gone from this place— We lift up thankful hearts. For those who sacrificed themselves, our sisters and brothers who have given their lives for the sake of others-We lift up thankful hearts. In their continual remembrance, may we be dedicated to working for a world where justice rules the day, love animates our living, and peace is our practice. O Lord, save your people and bless your heritage. Day by day we magnify you and worship your name, forever and ever. Amen.

WORSHIP JUST BELIEVE. During the Season of Easter, we engage in a sermon series on believing. Belief is a nice idea, but the way it’s been defined in religious circles just won’t work for some of us. What if we can’t “just believe”? Jesus’ first followers had the same struggle—they came to believe in different ways. During the season of Easter we’ll consider different ways in which we come to believe. MUSIC NOTES. Today we welcome guest organist Graham Velsey, age 13. Graham is a piano student of Dr. Branham, an organ student of John Dautzenberg, and a singer in Maryland State Boychoir. Congratulations to John, who graduated from Catholic University yesterday and will return to the organ bench next fall.

TODAY NIELSEN SACRISTY DEDICATION. Today we dedicate the renovated church sacristy in honor of Vivian Nielsen. Vivian gave over 30 years as a volunteer with Downtown Social Club; she provided local and national leadership with American Baptist and Southern Baptist Women, Baptist World Alliance and DC Baptist Convention. The sacristy renovation is made possible by a generous gift from her husband, Aldon D. Nielsen. MUSIC FOR KIDS resumes today in Music Suite, 12:30 – 1:00 p.m. Join us!

This year is a time of transition for Calvary. With lots of changes ahead, find updates in this box as well as on our website, Twitter, and Facebook page. For questions or suggestions about our transition, email transitions@calvarydc.org or call the church office. CALVARY’S RESIDENT SELECTION COMMITTEE has worked diligently over the last two months to identify the top three candidates for our inaugural year of residency. Two of them will be our associate pastors beginning this summer. These candidates are extremely talented, and they are excited about the prospect of coming to Calvary through the pastoral residency program. Candidate résumés were distributed at the April 30 business meeting and are available in the church office. Elijah Zehyoue joined us last week; Rich Havard and Erica Lea are with us in worship today. For questions, contact Eva Powell, residency@calvarydc.org. SPECIAL TIME OF PRAYER. On April 27, the Search Committee of Riverside Church, New York (theriversidechurchny.org) recommended calling Calvary’s Senior Pastor Amy Butler to be Riverside’s next Senior Minister. Riverside’s congregation will vote on the recommendation following a sermon by Pastor Amy on June 8. Please join us as we pray for our pastor, her family, and Riverside as they to discern God’s call. CALVARY MEMBERS AND FRIENDS are invited to gather for a few minutes of prayer, 10:50 a.m. each Sunday before worship, as we pray for discernment amid many Calvary transitions and changes.
