EASTER DAY: RESURRECTION OF THE LORD

11:00 A.M.

We are an ecumenical, multi-racial, multi-ethnic Christian body that reaches out to the world with the Good News of Jesus Christ. To that end we strive to be welcoming, responsive, trusting and prayerful in everything we do. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

THE EVIDENCE OF EASTER is a reconfigured Easter people—people no longer afraid of the dark, people who dare to live by love and not by fear, people afraid of neither death nor life. In short, people like us, who aspire to be people like that.

“Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here— he is risen, just as he said!”

We are the Easter people. For us, death, in all of its cynical and greedy ways, no longer has control over us. We have a better idea, we claim a greater truth, we live because we are loved. And, because we are loved, we can truly live! — Peter Gomes, adapted

LITANY OF ADORATION AND PRAISE

Psalm 118:1-3, 13-23 Teresa Ferrara, Cantor

Refrain. Now thank we all our God, with heart and hands and voices. Thanks and praise are yours, O God. Of this we are sure: Your love never quits! Let every nation and all the people of earth sing it out so that everyone hears: “God’s love never quits!” Let everyone who knows God’s mercy and grace join in: “God’s love never quits!” When we were fading fast, our God came. By love’s might, you, O God, rescued us! Though darkness surrounded us, we were never alone. By your hand you led us into the light. We did not perish! You led us out of the grave and walked with us along love’s path until, at last, we arrived at the gates of your home. And, through the door called “Grace” we entered in—there is no other way! This is the Lord’s doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes! Refrain. MORNING PRAYER

John Appiah-Duffell

Glorious God—whose love never quits, who brings light out of darkness, hope out of anguish, and life out of death, who overcomes the powers of fear, hatred and evil, who promises never to leave us, and who wills that all people honor and worship you—receive our praise! On this day we gather in the name of Jesus, by whose death and resurrection we have been set free. Upon each person here, let your blessings rest and set our minds on the new life to which you have called us. Ready our hearts to sing and place on our lips words of thanksgiving. And, then, move us out from this place, letting love loose on all creation and flinging joy before us as we go. In the name of the risen Christ, we pray. Amen! PASSING THE PEACE OF CHRIST

John Appiah-Duffell

La paz del Señor sea contigo. Y contigo también. The peace of the Lord be with you. And also with you. CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE

Make Us One MAKE US ONE

Make us one, Lord, make us one; Holy Spirit, make us one. Let your love flow so the world will know we are one in you.

A TIME WITH CHILDREN AND BLESSING

Reverend Glaze

People of God, what is your prayer for these children? Our prayer is that they grow up to be like Jesus—strong and brave, full of grace and truth! And, that we will help them. MUSICAL MEDITATION

Gloria (extract), from Mass in C Major Op. 86 Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) Calvary Festival Choir; Matt Daley, Piano

Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to all those of good will. We praise thee, we bless thee, we worship thee, we glorify thee. For thou alone art holy. Thou alone art the Lord. L ISTENING FOR THE W ORD OF G OD HEBREW LESSON

6On

this mountain the Lord of hosts will make for all peoples a feast of rich food, a feast of well-matured wines, of rich food filled with marrow, of well-matured wines strained clear. 7And he will destroy on this mountain the shroud that is cast over all peoples, the sheet that is spread over all nations; 8he will swallow up death for ever. Then the Lord God will wipe away the tears from all faces, and the disgrace of his people he will take away from all the earth, for the Lord has spoken. 9It will be said on that day, Lo, this is our God; we have waited for him, so that he might save us. This is the Lord for whom we have waited; let us be glad and rejoice in his salvation. EPISTLE LESSON

1 Corinthians/1 Corintios 15:1-8, 55, 57 John Appiah-Duffel

1Now

I should remind you, brothers and sisters, of the good news that I proclaimed to you, which you in turn received, in which also you stand, 2through which also you are being saved, if you hold firmly to the message that I proclaimed to you—unless you have come to believe in vain. 3For I handed on to you as of first importance what I in turn had received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the scriptures, 4and that he was buried, and that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the scriptures, 5and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. 6Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers and sisters at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have died. 7Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles. 8Last of all, as to someone untimely born, he appeared also to me. 55’Where, 57But

O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?’ thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

1Además

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

Alleluia Melchior Vulpius (c. 1560 – 1616) Teresa Ferrara, Cantor

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! Go to my brothers and say—I have seen the Lord! Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! – John 20, adapted GOSPEL LESSON

John/Juan 20: 1-18 Pastor Erica 1Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the tomb. 2So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, ‘They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.’ 3Then Peter and the other disciple set out and went towards the tomb. 4The two were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. 5He bent down to look in and saw the linen wrappings lying there, but he did not go in. 6Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen wrappings lying there, 7and the cloth that had been on Jesus’ head, not lying with the linen wrappings but rolled up in a place by itself. 8Then the other disciple, who reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; 9for as yet they did not understand the scripture, that he must rise from the dead. 10Then the disciples returned to their homes. 11 But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb; 12and she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had been lying, one at the head and the other at the feet. 13They said to her, ‘Woman, why are you weeping?’ She said to them, ‘They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.’ 14When she had said this, she turned round and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not know that it was Jesus. 15Jesus said to her, ‘Woman, why are you weeping? For whom are you looking?’ Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, ‘Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.’ 16Jesus said to her, ‘Mary!’ She turned and said to him in Hebrew, ‘Rabbouni!’ (which means Teacher). 17Jesus said to her, ‘Do not hold on to me, because I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and say to them, “I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.” ’ 18Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, ‘I have seen the Lord’; and she told them that he had said these things to her. 1El

¿A quién buscas? This is the Gospel of Christ. Thanks be to God. PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION

Reverend Glaze

Lord God, as night gave way to day and dark to light, as death made room for resurrection, and fear made way for joy, so may we give way to you. May we drop our doubts and our defenses so that we might feel you rolling back the stones that weigh upon us, trapping us in tombs of fear, guilt and shame. And, in beholding your Beloved Child, raised by the power of love, may we, too, give way to love and, thereby, to life! Amen. SERMON

Humbly I adore you, Deity divine. You are truly present in the bread and wine. Lo, to you I offer my entire heart, for when I behold you, all else does depart. O memorial glorious of our Savior’s death, Bread of Life, you give us every living breath. Grant my soul to ever find its life in you. May your sweetness ever fill my soul anew. G IVING AND S ERVING OFFERING OUR PRAYERS Pastor Elijah After the Pastoral Prayer, we invite everyone to pray the Lord’s Prayer in your native language. Our Father who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom come. Thy will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. OFFERING OUR WITNESS

Reverend Palacios

With the working of God’s love in a cold, dark tomb, Christ is Risen! When courage faces down evil and death to declare, “Jesus is Lord,” Christ is Risen! Where the hungry celebrate with feasting, Christ is Risen! With the laughter of children loved, cherished and protected, Christ is Risen! When those abused and oppressed find their voices and sing their songs, Christ is Risen! When the least among us are cared for, honored and their rights valued, Christ is Risen! When enemies are reconciled and become friends, Christ is Risen! Where love is allowed to flourish and to grow into community, Christ is Risen! When forgiveness is quick and fellowship restored, Christ is Risen! When persons bound by sin and fear are released and set free, Christ is Risen! When the church welcomes others with generosity, grace and without judgment; and, when those who make Jesus’ name their own live together in love and peace, Christ is Risen! Alleluia! Alleluia!

Praise to the Living God YIGDAL / arr. Marion Vree Calvary Festival Choir; Matt Daley, Organ

Praise to the living God, all praised be the name who was, and is, and is to be, and still the same. The one eternal God, ere aught that now appears, the First, the Last, beyond all thought in timeless years. God’s spirit flowing free, high surging where it will: in prophet’s word God spoke of old and speaketh still. Established is God’s law, and changeless it shall stand, deep writ upon the human heart, on sea or land. We have eternal life implanted in the soul. God’s love shall be our strength and store while ages roll. Praise to the living God! All praised be the name, who was, and is, and is to be, and still the same! --Daniel Ben Judah (14th century), adapted
