THE PEOPLE OF CALVARY BAPTIST CHURCH GATHER

THE WORSHIP MARCH 22, 2015

OF

GOD

FIFTH SUNDAY IN LENT

11:00 A.M.

We are an ecumenical, multi-racial, multi-ethnic Christian body that reaches out to the world with the Good News of Jesus Christ. To that end we strive to be welcoming, responsive, trusting and prayerful in everything we do. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

When I survey the wondrous cross, on which the Prince of glory died, my richest gain I count but loss, and pour contempt on all my pride. From sacred head, from hands, and feet, sorrow and love flow mingled down! Did e’er such love and sorrow meet, or thorns compose so rich a crown?

“And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people unto myself.” — John 12:32

Were the whole realm of nature mine, that were a present far too small; love so amazing, so divine, demands my soul, my life, my all. — Isaac Watts, 1674-1748

G ATHERING FOR WORSHIP PRELUDE During the Prelude, prepare for worship by centering your heart with this adapted prayer from India.

Little Prelude in G Minor, BWV 558 J.S. Bach (1685 – 1750) Graham Velsey, Organ

O Tree of Calvary, send your roots down into our hearts—deep into the soil of our sorrow and our pain, into the sands of our selfishness and sin, the mud of our anger and fear. Bind them together, O Tree of Calvary, and send through them thy strong roots, entwine them in the strong, sure network of thy love. And, seeing the one who died upon your limbs, may we trust that he died for us, and give our lives to him. Amen. LIGHTING THE ALTAR CANDLES WELCOME CHORAL CALL TO WORSHIP

LITANY OF ADORATION AND PRAISE

Psalm 119:9-16 Amelia Taylor, Cantor

Refrain. Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path. The more we know of you and your ways, O God, the more we have to learn, the more we want to know. Our minds are too small, too cluttered to contain all of you. How can we ever learn who you really are in all of your wonder and glory? Only by listening—and not with ears only, but also with our hearts—listening to your promises and to your dreams—treasuring them, holding them, trusting them. And behind every commandment, every story, every testimony and promise of scripture we find not laws and rules to be obeyed or else, but a love and a lover to be given to. O Beloved, imprint your word on our hearts. May it be a treasure to be mined, that in it’s opening, we find you, we find love. Refrain. MORNING PRAYER

John Taylor

God, our Beloved, we thank you for your Word and its witness that we are welcomed and loved, not by anything we do or bring, but by your grace alone, by what Jesus Christ has done for us all in his cross. Now, be with us today and give us glad hearts that this time of worship be a joyful response of praise and thanksgiving for all of your mercy and love. Then send us out into the world as your faithful children, full of love for you and for others. Through Jesus Christ, your Child, our Brother, Savior and Friend, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, through all eternity. Amen. PASSING THE PEACE OF CHRIST

John Taylor

La paz del Señor sea contigo. Y contigo también. The peace of the Lord be with you. And also with you. CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE

Make Us One MAKE US ONE

Make us one, Lord, make us one; Holy Spirit, make us one. Let your love flow so the world will know we are one in you. A TIME WITH CHILDREN AND BLESSING

Pastor Elijah

People of God, what is your prayer for these children? Our prayer is that they grow up to be like Jesus—strong and brave, full of grace and truth! And, that we will help them. MUSICAL MEDITATION

L ISTENING FOR THE W ORD OF G OD HEBREW LESSON

Jeremiah/Jeremías 31:31-34 Pastor Erica 31The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah. 32It will not be like the covenant that I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt—a covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, says the Lord. 33But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.

34No

longer shall they teach one another, or say to each other, ‘Know the Lord’, for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, says the Lord; for I will forgive their iniquity, and remember their sin no more. 31He

19Therefore,

my friends, since we have confidence to enter the sanctuary by the blood of Jesus, the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain (that is, through his flesh), 21and since we have a great priest over the house of God, 22let us approach with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. 23Let us hold fast to the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who has promised is faithful. 24And let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good deeds, 25not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching. 20by

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

Praise to You, Lord Jesus Christ Leo Nestor (b. 1948) Amelia Taylor, Cantor

Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. When I am lifted up from earth, I will draw all people to myself. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. – John 12, adapted GOSPEL LESSON

John/Juan 12:20-33 Pastor Elijah 20Now among those who went up to worship at the festival were some Greeks. 21They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and said to him, ‘Sir, we wish to see Jesus.’ 22Philip went and told Andrew; then Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. 23Jesus answered them, ‘The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. 24Very truly, I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. 25Those who love their life lose it, and those who hate their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. 26Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there will my servant be also. Whoever serves me, the Father will honor. 27‘Now my soul is troubled. And what should I

say—“Father, save me from this hour”? No, it is for this reason that I have come to this hour. 28Father, glorify your name.’ Then a voice came from heaven, ‘I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.’ 29The crowd standing there heard it and said that it was thunder. Others said, ‘An angel has spoken to him.’ 30Jesus answered, ‘This voice has come for your sake, not for mine. 31Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be driven out. 32And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.’ 33He said this to indicate the kind of death he was to die. 20Había

This is the Gospel of Christ. Thanks be to God. GOSPEL HYMN

HUDSON

1. Alas and did my Savior bleed, and did my Sovereign die Would He devote that sacred head for sinners such as I— Refrain. At the cross, at the cross where I first saw the light And the burden of my heart rolled away It was there by faith I received my sight, and now I am happy all the day. 2. En la cruz, en la cruz, do primero vi la luz Y las manchas de mi alma yo lavé Fue allí por fe do vi a Jesús, y siempre feliz con él seré. 3. G IVING AND S ERVING OFFERING OUR LENTEN CONFESSION

Reverend Glaze

Gracious God, you came to us in your Child, Jesus. He shared our life and in every way loved us, even as we nailed him to the cross and watched him die. But then, because of your love for him and for us, you raised him from death to reign forever in mercy and in love. But, while we know the story and believe it, too often it has made little difference in our lives. There have been times when we should have stood up for Jesus, when we should have told clearly and confidently what he means to us and to this world. But, instead, we were timid and silent. For those times have mercy on us. Enable us to reflect more deeply on the sacred story and the one to whom it testifies, so that our love for him may increase, our hope in him be more sure, our service for him be more joyful, and our testimony of him more courageous. WORDS OF ASSURANCE

from 1 Corinthians 2:18, 23-24; 2 Corinthians 5:17-19 Reverend Glaze Friends hear truth of the Gospel: The message about Jesus Christ and his death on the cross is nonsense to those captive to this world’s lies, but to those who’ve tasted of God’s grace it is the very power of God—changing us from people weak and fearful into people alive and strong, in love with God and with all people! Yes, Jesus Christ and his cross—this is the very power of God. Thanks be to God!

OFFERING OUR WITNESS

Pastor Erica

Let us state together the truth God’s people have come to trust. Today’s witness is about the cross, adapted from the old German Heidelberg Confession. We believe that in Christ’s death our old selves have been crucified, put to death and buried with him, so that sin and fear no longer have final victory over us, but that instead we might live lives of joy, gratitude and praise. We believe that because of what Christ did for us all on the cross, God will never hold against us either our weaknesses or our sins. Though we will struggle with sin our whole lives long, by grace God grants us all peace and life, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Thanks be to God. Amen.
