King Jesus rides on a milk white horse. No one works like him! The river Jordan he did cross. No one works like him! My Jesus left his throne above No one works like him! See his mercy and his love. No one works like him! Ride on, King Jesus! No one can a-hinder you. Ride on, King Jesus, ride on! No one can a-hinder you. — African-American Spiritual

MORNING PRAYER

Reverend Palacios

Beloved, may we open our hearts, as did those in Jerusalem long ago, to welcome Jesus into our midst. May we receive him as our gentle conqueror so that, following him, we would become as he was—kind, loving, brave, a defender of the weak, a doer of justice, the servant of all. And, as we journey with Christ through this week, confront us with our capacity to deny and to crucify, and then strengthen us to stand with him, faithful in the face of suffering and risk, rejection and shame. And, through it all, remind us of your constant love and surprising grace. In the name of Jesus, the Christ, we pray. Amen. PASSING THE PEACE OF CHRIST

Reverend Palacios

La paz del Señor sea contigo. Y contigo también. The peace of the Lord be with you. And also with you. CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE

L ISTENING FOR THE W ORD OF G OD EPISTLE LESSON

5Let

the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, 6who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, 7but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form, 8he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death— even death on a cross. 9Therefore God also highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, 10so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

Praise to You, Lord Jesus Christ Leo Nestor (b. 1948) Dwayne Pinkney, Cantor

Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Christ became obedient for us, even unto death on the cross. Therefore God raised him on high, and gave him a name above all other names. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. GOSPEL LESSON—THE CRUCIFIXION

Mark/Marcos 15:1-15, 22-39 Pastors Elijah & Erica 1As soon as it was morning, the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council. They bound Jesus, led him away, and handed him over to Pilate. 2Pilate asked him, ‘Are you the King of the Jews?’ He answered him, ‘You say so.’ 3Then the chief priests accused him of many things. 4Pilate asked him again, ‘Have you no answer? See how many charges they bring against you.’ 5But Jesus made no further reply, so that Pilate was amazed.6Now at the festival he used to release a prisoner for them, anyone for whom they asked. 7Now a man called Barabbas was in prison with the rebels who had committed murder during the insurrection. 8So the crowd came and began to ask Pilate to do for them according to his custom. 9Then he answered them, ‘Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?’ 10For he realized that it was out of jealousy that the chief priests had handed him over. 11But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have him release Barabbas for them instead. 12Pilate spoke to them again, ‘Then what do you wish me to do with the man you call the King of the Jews?’ 13They shouted back, ‘Crucify him!’ 14Pilate asked them, ‘Why, what evil has he done?’ But they shouted all the more, ‘Crucify him!’ 15So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released Barabbas for them; and after flogging Jesus, he handed him over to be crucified. 22Then

they brought Jesus to the place called Golgotha (which means the place of a skull). 23And they offered him wine mixed with myrrh; but he did not take it. 24And they crucified him, and divided his clothes among them, casting lots to decide what each should take. 25It was nine o’clock in the morning when they crucified him. 26The inscription of the charge against him read, ‘The King of the Jews.’ 27And with him they crucified two bandits, one on his right and one on his left. 29Those who passed by derided him, shaking their heads and saying, ‘Aha! You

who would destroy the temple and build it in three days, 30save yourself, and come down from the cross!’ 31In the same way the chief priests, along with the scribes, were also mocking him among themselves and saying, ‘He saved others; he cannot save himself. 32Let the Messiah, the King of Israel, come down from the cross now, so that we may see and believe.’ Those who were crucified with him also taunted him. 33When it was noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon. 34At three o’clock Jesus cried out with a loud voice, ‘Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?’ which means, ‘My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?’ 35When some of the bystanders heard it, they said, ‘Listen, he is calling for Elijah.’ 36And someone ran, filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a stick, and gave it to him to drink, saying, ‘Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to take him down.’ 37Then Jesus gave a loud cry and breathed his last. 38And the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. 39Now when the centurion, who stood facing him, saw that in this way he breathed his last, he said, ‘Truly this man was God’s Son!’ 1Muy

This is the Gospel of Christ. Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL HYMN

When I Survey the Wondrous Cross / La Cruz Excelsa al Contemplar

HAMBURG

When I survey the wondrous cross on which the Prince of glory died, my richest gain I count but loss, and pour contempt on all my pride. See, from his head, his hands, his feet, sorrow and love flow mingled down! Did e’er such love and sorrow meet, or thorns compose so rich a crown? PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION

Reverend Glaze

Lord Jesus, how your heart must have broken knowing the shouts of “Hosanna!” would soon turn to “Crucify him!” As you humbled and emptied yourself, let us now so do, so that humble and empty we would hear your word, know your love, and then rise to follow wherever you go. Amen. SERMON

SILENT REFLECTION

G IVING AND S ERVING OFFERING OUR LENTEN CONFESSION

Pastor Erica

Merciful God, as we enter into this week called “Holy,” we remember that going to Jerusalem cost Jesus his life. Those singing before him songs of welcome and praise soon took up angry calls for his death. And, we are just like that crowd long ago. For the emptiness of our praise and the wavering of our faith, forgive us. Forgive us for the excuses we give for falling back and leaving Jesus to walk alone. Forgive us when we say we know him on Sunday, only to deny him on Friday. O God, take away our sin so that we who have denied and deserted Jesus may repent and follow him. And, when we proclaim the name of Jesus, may it not be in words only, but in deeds so loving and merciful, so good and just, that others are drawn to him as well. WORDS OF ASSURANCE

from 1 Timothy 1:15; Mark 1:17; 1 Corinthians 15:58; Revelation 2:10

Here are words you may hold to with full and complete confidence: Jesus Christ came into the world to welcome and to save. So, you are forgiven—no strings attached. But, he also says, “Follow me.” Therefore, have courage, stand firm and don’t waiver. Nothing you do for Jesus will be in vain. Just be faithful and your reward will be life—real life, full and forever! Yes, in Christ we are forgiven, and we’ll follow him! Thanks be to God! INVITATION TO GIVE AND TO SERVE MUSICAL OFFERING

OFFERING OUR WITNESS

Pastor Elijah

Let us state what we have come to believe about Jesus Christ. Today’s witness is a poetic text (adapted)—based on Philippians 2:5-8 and Colossians 1:15—by the English hymnist, Graham Kendrick. Meekness and majesty, earth’s flesh and deity, in perfect harmony is Jesus, the Christ. Lord of eternity, dwells in humanity; kneels in humility and washes our feet. Heaven’s pure radiance, perfect in innocence; yet learns obedience to death on a cross. Suff’ring to give us life, glorious through sacrifice; and, as they crucify, prays: “Abba, forgive.” Wisdom unsearchable, God the invisible; love indestructible in frailty appears. Lord of infinity, stooping so tenderly; lifts our humanity to the heights of God’s love.

B ECOMING D ISCIPLES INVITATION TO DISCIPLESHIP Reverend Glaze During the singing, we invite you to come forward if you wish to make a public commitment to follow Jesus or to express interest in joining this community of faith. HYMNS IN ALTERNATION

O Come, All Ye Faithful

ADESTE FIDELES / arr. David Willcocks

Ah, Holy Jesus

HERZLIEBSTER JESU / arr. John Ferguson

All:

O come, all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant! O come ye, O come ye to worship Him. Son of the Father now in flesh appearing!

Refrain:

O come, let us adore him; O come, let us adore him; O come, let us adore him, Christ the Lord!

Choir:

Ah, holy Jesus, how have you offended, that mortal judgment has on you descended? By foes derided, by your own rejected, O most afflicted.

Choir:

Who was the guilty? Who brought this upon you? Alas, my treason, Jesus, has undone you. ‘Twas I, Lord Jesus, I it was denied you; I crucified you.

All:

Sing, choirs of angels, sing in exultation, sing, all ye citizens of heaven above! Glory to God in the highest! Refrain.

Choir:

Lo, the Good Shepherd for the sheep is offered; the slave has sinned, and the Son has suffered; for our atonement, while we nothing heeded, God interceded.

Choir:

For me, kind Jesus, was your incarnation, your mortal sorrow and your life’s oblation, your death of anguish and your bitter Passion, for my salvation.

All:

Yea, Lord we greet thee, born for our salvation! Jesus, to thee be glory giv’n! Word of the Father now in flesh appearing! Refrain.
