CALL TO WORSHIP Amy Butler We come to the waters to be cleansed to be nourished to be refreshed. The grime of life and worry and sin and death wears on us. We long to be cleansed so that our souls can be free, nourished, so that our lives may be graced, refreshed so that our footsteps will be guided. We come to the waters … as he came to the waters. God calls us from death to rebirth, from dreams to life, from yesterday to tomorrow. We are cleansed and nourished and refreshed. Thanks be to God. Let us worship God! A SERVICE OF BLESSING

Amy Butler Edgar Palacios

Finoula Sullivan Scheiber Cormac Sullivan Scheiber Pastor Amy: We gather today to give our welcome, thanks, and support as we bless and welcome Fin and Cormac. We give thanks to our Creator for the gift of these children. They were created in God’s image and gifted to this world with the intention and anticipation of great blessing. Today we embrace them as part of this community by formally giving them their names. Pastor Edgar: Together we pledge our support to their family, recognizing that we all have the responsibility to care for them and nurture them as they grow. Pastor Amy: Amy, what names do you give these children? Pastor Amy: Amy, Fin and Cormac are not only your children but also children of God. To you is entrusted the sacred joy and privilege of guiding their lives with all of their possibilities and promise. You are tasked with teaching them to know and love God, and to love their neighbors. Do you promise, to the best of your ability by your example, your teaching, and your love, to nurture your children in this way? Pastor Amy: Members and friends, adults, youth, and children of Calvary Baptist Church, will you please rise as you are able? No child grows up outside the influence of her community, and no parent raises a child alone. We are now charged with loving and supporting this family. As their church family, do you promise to love them, to offer them your steady presence and best selves, to nurture and sustain them all as they learn and grow and change together? People: We do. Prayer of Blessing Edgar Palacios

This is the Gospel of Christ. MUSICAL MEDITATION

Thanks be to God.

I’ll Make Me a Man Spiritual / arr. Roland Hayes (1887 - 1977) Elizabeth Beavers, Mezzo-Soprano

Then God walked around, and God looked around on all that He had made. He looked at His sun, He looked at His moon and His little stars. He looked on His world with all its living things, and God said: I’m lonely still. God sat down on the side of a hill, God sat down where He could think. God sat down by a deep, wide river, God sat down with His head in His hands. God thought and thought, ‘til He thought: I’ll make me a man. Up from the bed of the river, God scooped the clay. And by the bank of the river, God kneeled Him down. And there this great God almighty!—Who lit the sun and fixed it in the sky, Who flung the stars to the most far corners of the night, Who rounded the earth in the hollow of His hand—this great God, like a mammy bending over her babe, kneeled down in the dust, toiling over this lump of clay ‘til He shaped it in His own image. Then into it He blew the breath of life, and man became a living soul. Amen.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

Trey Sullivan

Our Father who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom come. Thy will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. SERMON

REMEMBERING OUR BAPTISM

What God Really Thinks of You Amy Butler Water, River, Spirit, Grace PLEADING SAVIOR

What ruler wades through murky streams and bows his head beneath the wave mindless of how the world esteems those who are powerful and brave? Refrain: Water, River, Spirit, Grace sweep over me, sweep over me! Recarve the depths your fingers traced in sculpting me, sculpting even me. Christ gleams with water brown with clay from the land the prophets trod above while heaven’s clouds give way descends the dove of our living God. Refrain. Come bow beneath the flowing wave Christ stands here with us, at our side and raises us, as from the grave God raise his Son, the crucified. Refrain. --Thomas H. Troeger, adapted
