THE PEOPLE OF CALVARY BAPTIST CHURCH GATHER

THE WORSHIP MARCH 8, 2015

OF

GOD

THIRD SUNDAY IN LENT

11:00 A.M.

We are an ecumenical, multi-racial, multi-ethnic Christian body that reaches out to the world with the Good News of Jesus Christ. To that end we strive to be welcoming, responsive, trusting and prayerful in everything we do. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

YOU HAMMER AGAINST THE WALLS of your house. You tap the walls, lightly, everywhere. After giving many years' attention to these things, you know what to listen for. Some of the walls are bearing walls; they have to stay, or everything will fall down. Other walls can go with impunity; you can hear the difference.

During Passover Jesus saw persons in the temple selling animals and the money changers at their tables. With a whip he drove them out, saying, "Stop making my Father's house a marketplace!" John 2

Unfortunately, it is often a bearing wall that has to go. It cannot be helped. There is only one solution, which appalls you, but there it is. Knock it out. — Annie Dillard, The Writing Life

G ATHERING FOR WORSHIP PRELUDE During the Prelude, prepare for worship by centering Your heart on this prayer by Thomas Ken (1637-1711):

Largo, from Sonata in A Minor Georg Philipp Telemann (1681-1767) Tomás Fajardo, viola

May the door of this church be wide enough to receive all who need love and friendship, and a heavenly Parent’s care—but narrow enough to shut out all pride and strife. May its threshold be smooth so to be no stumbling block to children or to straying feet, yet strong enough to turn away the tempter’s power. O God, may the door of this church be a gateway of grace to your peace and joy. Amen. LIGHTING THE ALTAR CANDLES WELCOME CHORAL CALL TO WORSHIP

LITANY OF ADORATION AND PRAISE

Psalm 19 Teresa Ferrara, Cantor

Refrain. The law of God is just, reviving all your soul. The beauty of interstellar space reveals the glory of its maker—the work of a lover, an artist. As night and day silently follow one upon the other, if we are still and listen we can hear music, a love song raised to you, O God! And, as the sun makes its way across the sky, revealing all in its blazing light, so your truth uncovers all we try to keep hidden in darkness. May your perfect law take root in us, to give light to our path, to bring joy to our fearful hearts, to delight us with your goodness, and to set us to work for you. As does a bee for honey, may we yearn for you. More than wealth or fame may we desire your commandments. Let the words of our mouths and the whisperings of our hearts be according to your will, O Lord, our God. Refrain. MORNING PRAYER

Ashley Becker

O God, our Beloved, with all creation we, too, lift our love song of thanksgiving and praise. Draw us by your grace and then speak to us your word—so that, with hearts warmed and minds transformed, we no longer would be enslaved to our desires or to the false gods of this age. But alive as free men and women, may we be given fully and joyfully to your service and the benefit of our sisters and brothers. In Jesus’ name. Amen. PASSING THE PEACE OF CHRIST

Ashley Becker

La paz del Señor sea contigo. Y contigo también. The peace of the Lord be with you. And also with you. CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE

Make Us One MAKE US ONE

Make us one, Lord, make us one; Holy Spirit, make us one. Let your love flow so the world will know we are one in you. A TIME WITH CHILDREN AND BLESSING

Allyson Robinson

People of God, what is your prayer for these children? Our prayer is that they grow up to be like Jesus—strong and brave, full of grace and truth! And, that we will help them. MUSICAL MEDITATION

Allegro, from Sonata in A Minor Telemann Tomás Fajardo, viola

L ISTENING FOR THE W ORD OF G OD HEBREW LESSON

Exodus/Éxodo 20:1-17 Pastor Erica 1Then God spoke all these words: 2I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery; 3you shall have no other gods before me. 4You shall not make for yourself an idol, whether in the form of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. 5You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, punishing children for the iniquity of parents, to the third and the fourth generation of those who reject me, 6but showing steadfast love to the thousandth generation of those who love me and keep my commandments. 7You shall not make wrongful use of the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not acquit

anyone who misuses his name. 8Remember the sabbath day, and keep it holy. 9For six days you shall labor and do all your work. 10But the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God; you shall not do any work—you, your son or your daughter, your male or female slave, your livestock, or the alien resident in your towns. 11For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but rested the seventh day; therefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day and consecrated it. 12Honor your father and your mother, so that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you. 13You shall not murder. 14You shall not commit adultery. 15You shall not steal. 16You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. 17You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or male or female slave, or ox, or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor. 1Y

18For

the message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 19For it is written, ‘I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart.’ 20Where is the one who is wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? 21For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, God decided, through the foolishness of our proclamation, to save those who believe. 22For Jews demand signs and Greeks desire wisdom, 23but we proclaim Christ crucified, a stumbling-block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, 24but to those who are the called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. 25For God’s foolishness is wiser than human wisdom, and God’s weakness is stronger than human strength.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

Praise to You, Lord Jesus Christ Leo Nestor (b. 1948) Teresa Ferrara, Cantor

Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. What sign can you show us? Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. – John 2, adapted GOSPEL LESSON

John/Juan 2:13-22 Pastor Elijah 13The Passover of the Jews was near, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 14In the temple he found people selling cattle, sheep, and doves, and the money-changers seated at their tables. 15Making a whip of cords, he drove all of them out of the temple, both the sheep and the cattle. He also poured out the coins of the money-changers and overturned their tables. 16He told those who were selling the doves, ‘Take these things out of here! Stop making my Father’s house a marketplace!’ 17His disciples remembered that it was written, ‘Zeal for your house will consume me.’ 18The Jews then said to him, ‘What sign can you show us for doing this?’ 19Jesus answered them, ‘Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.’ 20The Jews then said, ‘This temple has been under construction for forty-six years, and will you raise it up in three days?’ 21But he was speaking of the temple of his body. 22After he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this; and they believed the scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken. 13Estaba

This is the Gospel of Christ. Thanks be to God. GOSPEL HYMN All sing Refrain then Estribillo. Soloist sings a verse in Spanish—All sing Estribillo. Soloist sings a verse in English—All sing Refrain.

Lead Me, Guide Me / Guíame, Mi Señor LEAD ME GUIDE ME

Refrain. Lead me, guide me along the way, for if you lead me, I cannot stray. Lord, let me walk each day with thee. Lead me, O Lord, lead me. Estribillo. Guíame, guíame en tu verdad. Si me conduces, no vagaré. Dios, déjame contigo andar. Guíame, mi Señor. PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION

Reverend Glaze

Thank you God for the word that is now before us. In this place and time, send your Spirit to make your message clear, and to help us understand and do all that you would ask of us. Amen.

MUSICAL REFLECTION

G IVING AND S ERVING OFFERING OUR LENTEN CONFESSION

Reverend Glaze

Merciful God, forgive us our arrogance in thinking we do not need a guide—that on our own we are able to see clearly and rightly, able do that which is good and just. But, ignorant of spiritual things and captive to this world, we stumble along in the darkness of old paths and false thinking. Our ears have been closed by fear and by culture, our eyes blinded by pride and clouded by sin. Forgive us, O God. Lead us to your word so that it might be for us a light in the darkness, showing us things we cannot see on our own: things wonderful and new, things that stretch our minds and enlarge our spirits, that open our hands and our hearts, that help and heal and give life and joy, things that can be only when we are living by your word and walking in your way. WORDS OF ASSURANCE

from Proverbs 3:5-8 Reverend Glaze Friends, trust in the Lord with all your heart. Never rely on what you think you know. If you remember the Lord in everything you do, you’ll always be on the right path. Simply obey the Lord’s word and refuse to do wrong. If you do, it will be like good medicine, a balm of healing for all that’s broken and tired. Yes, we’ll let God’s word guide us, and for us it will be a healing balm. Thanks be to God!

OFFERING OUR WITNESS

Pastor Erica

Let us state together the truth God’s people have come to trust. Today’s witness is about God’s command that we be a people of love—indeed, to love is the essence of what it means to follow Jesus. As God’s beloved children, we believe that our only obligation, our only debt, is to love— for if we love one another, we have fulfilled all that God requires of us.

All of God’s commandments can be summed up in the command to love. Indeed, while Moses brought down from Mount Sinai ten commandments, Jesus has given us only one—that we love. We believe that by this others will know that we truly are the friends and followers of Jesus —by our love. – From Romans 13:8-10, Galatians 5:14 and John 13:34-35
