THE PEOPLE OF CALVARY BAPTIST CHURCH GATHER

THE WORSHIP MARCH 1, 2015

OF

GOD

SECOND SUNDAY IN LENT

11:00 A.M.

We are an ecumenical, multi-racial, multi-ethnic Christian body that reaches out to the world with the Good News of Jesus Christ. To that end we strive to be welcoming, responsive, trusting and prayerful in everything we do. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

To the crowd Jesus said, “If any of you wants to be my disciple, then accept your own cross and follow me.” — Mark 8:34

THE SEASON OF LENT, structured as it is to remember the journey of Jesus to the cross, is the perfect time for articulating the call of Jesus to discipleship. In these forty days we contemplate not only the power of the cross of Christ, but also the power inherent in taking up our own crosses. Opportunities are daily before us, times when we may give our lives sacrificially to acts of love, compassion, justice, and peace. IN THIS SEASON we are wise to ponder not only the cross in our sanctuaries, but the sight of Jesus on the road to Jerusalem, calling those who would be his disciples to take up their own crosses and to walk with him. Paul Shupe, Feasting on the Word, adapted

G ATHERING FOR WORSHIP PRELUDE During the Prelude, prepare for worship by centering your heart with this prayer by Angea Ashwin:

Prelude, from Suite No. 1 in G Major J.S. Bach (1685-1750) Tomás Fajardo, viola

Lord, in these days of mercy, make us quiet and prayerful; In these days of challenge, make us stronger in you; In these days of emptiness, take posession of us; In these days of waiting, open our hearts to the mystery of your cross. LIGHTING THE ALTAR CANDLES WELCOME CHORAL CALL TO WORSHIP

LITANY OF ADORATION AND PRAISE

Psalm 22:25-31 Dwayne Pinkney, Cantor

Refrain. All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn unto God. O God, our Beloved, with reverent, heart-felt words we will tell of your kindness to all we meet; in the midst of the congregation we will sing your praise! For you, O Love, have not forgotten those who are poor and who suffer. Every plea has been heard, every cry pulls at your heart, O God. All the ends of the earth shall remember your goodness and shall stream to your table. There they shall feast on boundless mercy and be fed with unlimited grace. Now, Beloved, be glorified this day—enthroned on the praises of your people gathered here and from every corner on earth, from every tribe and people. Lord God, you are our salvation. In you we rest, with you were are safe and free. How can we keep from singing? Refrain. MORNING PRAYER

Marili Alvarado

Beloved, we praise you for giving yourself to us in steadfast love. Thank you for the salvation and grace that is for every person on earth through your Child, Jesus. Assist us, we pray, to so worship and live that we may never shut our eyes, nor bar our hearts, to the travail Christ willingly endured for our sake—nor close our ears and turn away when we are asked to share with Christ in the way of the cross. For your glory we pray these things. Amen. PASSING THE PEACE OF CHRIST

Marili Alvarado

La paz del Señor sea contigo. Y contigo también. The peace of the Lord be with you. And also with you. CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE

Make Us One MAKE US ONE

Pastor Erica

People of God, what is your prayer for these children? Our prayer is that they grow up to be like Jesus—strong and brave, full of grace and truth! And, that we will help them. MUSICAL MEDITATION

L ISTENING FOR THE W ORD OF G OD HEBREW LESSON

1When

Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to Abram, and said to him, ‘I am God Almighty; walk before me, and be blameless. 2And I will make my covenant between me and you, and will make you exceedingly numerous.’ 3Then Abram fell on his face; and God said to him, 4‘As for me, this is my covenant with you: You shall be the ancestor of a multitude of nations. 5No longer shall your name be Abram, but your name shall be Abraham; for I have made you the ancestor of a multitude of nations. 6I will make you exceedingly fruitful; and I will make nations of you, and kings shall come from you. 7I will establish my covenant between me and you, and your offspring after you throughout their generations, for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and to your offspring after you. 15God

said to Abraham, ‘As for Sarai your wife, you shall not call her Sarai, but Sarah shall be her name. 16I will bless her, and moreover I will give you a son by her. I will bless her, and she shall give rise to nations; kings of peoples shall come from her.’ EPISTLE LESSON

Romans/Romanos 4:13-25 Pastor Erica 13For the promise that he would inherit the world did not come to Abraham or to his descendants through the law but through the righteousness of faith. 14If it is the adherents of the law who are to be the heirs, faith is null and the promise is void. 15For the law brings wrath; but where there is no law, neither is there violation. 16For this reason it depends on faith, in order that the promise may rest on grace and be guaranteed to all his descendants, not only to the adherents of the law but also to those who share the faith of Abraham (for he is the father of all of us, 17as it is written, ‘I have made you the father of many nations’)—in the presence of the God in whom he believed, who gives life to the dead and calls into existence the things that do not exist. 18Hoping against hope, he believed that he would become ‘the father of many nations’, according to what was said, ‘So numerous shall your descendants be.’ 19He did not weaken in faith when he considered his own body, which was already as good as dead (for he was about a hundred years old), or when he considered the barrenness of Sarah’s womb. 20No distrust made him waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God, 21being fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised. 22Therefore his faith ‘was reckoned to him as righteousness.’ 23Now the words, ‘it was reckoned to him’, were written not for his sake alone, 24but for ours also. It will be reckoned to us who believe in him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead, 25who was handed over to death for our trespasses and was raised for our justification. 13Porque

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

Praise to You, Lord Jesus Christ Leo Nestor (b. 1948) Dwayne Pinkney, Cantor

Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. If any want to become my followers, let them take up their cross and follow me. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. – Mark 8, adapted GOSPEL LESSON

Mark/Marcos 8:31-38 Pastor Elijah 31Then he began to teach them that the Son of Man must undergo great suffering, and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. 32He said all this quite openly. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. 33But turning and looking at his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, ‘Get behind me, Satan! For you are setting your mind not on divine things but on human things.’ 34He called the crowd with his disciples, and said to them, ‘If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. 35For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake, and for the sake of the gospel, will save it. 36For what will it profit them to gain the whole world and forfeit their life? 37Indeed, what can they give in return for their life? 38Those who are ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of them the Son of Man will also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.’ 31Y comenzó a enseñarles que le era necesario al Hijo del Hombre padecer mucho, y ser desechado por los ancianos, por los principales sacerdotes y por los escribas, y ser muerto, y resucitar después de tres días. This is the Gospel of Christ. Thanks be to God.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Pastor Erica

Merciful God, we talk much about faith, yet often are slow to take its risk. We seek forgiveness, yet often are stingy in giving it. We gladly enter into your presence by grace, yet set restrictions before everyone else. We praise love, yet have placed conditions on our loving; we urge others to hope, while holding on to doubt and despair. We have honored the cross of Christ, yet have avoided our own; we boast of our faithfulness, but turn back when the way is difficult and we grow weary and tired. O God, deal with us for our betrayals of the Gospel. By your Spirit enter our hearts and there reveal, judge, cleanse and reform us. And may we rise as Christ’s faithful followers, known for practicing what we say we believe with deeds of love and mercy, ever walking in ways of justice and peace, welcome and grace. WORDS OF ASSURANCE

Pastor Erica

Hear the Good News: Where Jesus asks us to go, he knows the way and has prepared it for us. All we need for the journey, Jesus will supply. Do not fear, do not falter, do not turn back. The Lord walks before us to give us hope, beside us that we might be strengthened, and dwells within us that we would be at peace. Yes, Jesus knows the way and is with us every step! Thanks be to God! GIVING THANKS

G IVING AND S ERVING OFFERING OUR WITNESS

John Appiah-Duffell

Let us state together the truth God’s people have come to trust, by the witness of both scripture and Spirit. Today’s witness is about putting faith into action by taking up our own cross. (Inspired by Romans 8:37-39, John 1:14, James 1:22, and Micah 6:8) We trust in a “with-us” God who came to us in Jesus to share our humanity—to take on, in love and on the cross, our brokenness, our weakness, our pain, our hopes and dreams. We affirm that in asking us to take up our own cross, Jesus calls us beyond the safe places—to join him, with vulnerability, in entering into the lives of others with love. We commit to work for justice and to put ourselves on the line—to live faithfully, to speak truthfully, to act confidently, ready by love’s power to face humiliation

and loss in order to stand with those who need our presence and our voices, with those who have been pushed aside and out the door. And, in taking up our own cross we are used by the Spirit in building God’s new community of grace and peace, welcome and love. Thanks be to God. MUSICAL OFFERING
