THE PEOPLE OF CALVARY BAPTIST CHURCH GATHER

THE WORSHIP JANUARY 18, 2015

OF

GOD

SECOND SUNDAY AFTER THE EPIPHANY

11:00 A.M.

BELOVED COMMUNITY SUNDAY: REMEMBERING THE REVEREND DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. We are an ecumenical, multi-racial, multi-ethnic Christian body that reaches out to the world with the Good News of Jesus Christ. To that end we strive to be welcoming, responsive, trusting and prayerful in everything we do. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Today, the Sunday before Martin Luther King Jr. Day, is what many have come to call Beloved Community Sunday—a time to remember Reverend King’s call to a way of living together marked by love, respect, care and goodwill. His vision was a biblical one, articulated by both Jesus and the Hebrew prophets. That is, it is only in seeking another’s good that we will find our own. As Martin wrote: “We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied together in a single garment of destiny.” - Letter from a Birmingham Jail

G ATHERING FOR WORSHIP PRELUDE

Come, Let Us Dream GIFT OF LOVE

Sanctuary Choir Come, let us dream God’s dream again. Come, one and all, let us ascend the mountain top where those of old saw God’s new day on earth unfold. The lame shall walk, the blind shall see, the doors swing wide, all pris’ners free, the lowly raised, the proud brought low. This is God’s dream: let justice flow. When hatred ends and wars shall cease, and all earth dwells in deepest peace, then be assured the time is near when perfect love casts out all fear. But know the cost of claiming sight of God’s new day, of wrongs made right, for some have paid the highest price: their lives for us, a sacrifice. Prophets are scorned in their own lands and martyrs slain by fearful hands; though dreamers die, the dream will live, for we have yet our lives to give. – John Middleton, adapted LIGHTING THE ALTAR CANDLES WELCOME

BECOMING CENTERED

Reverend Glaze

O God, you have made us one with you. And, you have taught us that if we are open to one another, you dwell in us. Help us to treasure this openness and to fight for it with all our hearts. Beloved, help us realize that there can be no peace where there is mistrust and rejection. Then, fill us with your love and let us be so bound together that we might, by our unity and mutual affection, bring your grace to bear upon this broken world and give witness to your faithful goodness and unending grace. Amen. – Thomas Merton, adapted HYMN

Lift High the Cross / Alcemos hoy la cruz CRUCIFER

Lift high the cross, the love of Christ proclaim ‘til all the world adore his sacred name. Come, Christians, follow where our Savior trod, our King victorious, Christ, the Son of God. Lift high the cross, the love of Christ proclaim ‘til all the world adore his sacred name. Cristianos todos, siervos del Señor la cruz alcemos, muestra de su amor. ¡Alcemos hoy la cruz del Salvador que todo ser le rinda adoración! Let every race and every language tell of him who saves our souls from death and hell. Lift high the cross, the love of Christ proclaim ‘til all the world adore his sacred name. Nuestro Señor a esa cruz subió y así su gracia Dios nos demostró. ¡Alcemos hoy las cruz del Salvador que todo ser le rinda adoración! So shall our song of triumph ever be: praise to the crucified for victory. Lift high the cross, the love of Christ proclaim ‘til all the world adore his sacred name. LITANY OF ADORATION AND PRAISE

Psalm 40 Teresa Ferrara, Cantor

Refrain. God, your mercy is upon us as we place our trust in you. Waiting, we waited—waiting for you, our God, our Beloved. Then, at last, you leaned down and heard our cry. Taking our hand in yours, you drew us up, out of the mud and the mire of our desolation. You set us down on solid ground. You opened our hearts, and there you placed your beautiful song of praise. But more than the praise of our lips and the words of our worship, your desire is that we do your will, that we live your justice, and walk in your love. And, so, we will speak of love’s way to all who’ll listen. To people everywhere, love will be the story we tell, and love the deeds we do. Refrain. MORNING PRAYER

Pastor Elijah

O God, we rejoice that you have called all people your children—whatever our race, nationality, religion, gender, orientation, class or condition. You delight in our diversity —each one of us is a manifestation of your glory. And, you made us to live not apart, but in community, working for the common good, joining together in your work of justice, peace and love. So, come to us now. We wait for your Spirit to lift us out of the fear that holds us down and makes us suspicious and afraid of others. Make us to be what your servant Martin called the “Beloved Community,” so that we might work for that day when all your children know your blessings and rest in your peace. Come, Beloved, we wait for you. Amen.

L ISTENING FOR THE W ORD OF G OD HEBREW LESSON 1For

Isaiah 62:1-5 Jay Mayfield

Zion’s sake I will not keep silent, and for Jerusalem’s sake I will not rest, until her vindication shines out like the dawn, and her salvation like a burning torch. 2The nations shall see your vindication, and all the kings your glory; and you shall be called by a new name that the mouth of the Lord will give. 3You shall be a crown of beauty in the hand of the Lord, and a royal diadem in the hand of your God. 4You shall no more be termed Forsaken, and your land shall no more be termed Desolate; but you shall be called My Delight Is in Her, and your land Married; for the Lord delights in you, and your land shall be married. 5For as a young man marries a young woman, so shall your builder marry you, and as the bridegroom rejoices over the bride, so shall your God rejoice over you. 1Por

25But

now that faith has come, we are no longer subject to a disciplinarian, 26for in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith. 27As many of you as were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. 28There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

Alleluia Melchior Vulpius (c. 1560 – 1616) Teresa Ferrara, Cantor

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! What sign can you show us? Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! – John 2, Adapted GOSPEL LESSON

John 2:13-22 Pastor Erica 13The Passover of the Jews was near, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 14In the temple he found people selling cattle, sheep, and doves, and the money-changers seated at their tables. 15Making a whip of cords, he drove all of them out of the temple, both the sheep and the cattle. He also poured out the coins of the money-changers and overturned their tables. 16He told those who were selling the doves, ‘Take these things out of here! Stop making my Father’s house a market-place!’ 17His disciples remembered that it was written, ‘Zeal for your house will consume me.’ 18The Jews then said to him, ‘What sign can you show us for doing this?’ 19Jesus answered them, ‘Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.’ 20The Jews then said, ‘This temple has been under construction for forty-six years, and will you raise it up in three days?’ 21But he was speaking of the temple of his body. 22After he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this; and they believed the scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken. 13Estaba

This is the Gospel of Christ. Thanks be to God. GOSPEL HYMN 628

Truth-telling, wind-blowing, life-giving Spirit—we present ourselves for your instruction. Breathe over us that we might hear the word we need. G IVING AND S ERVING OFFERING OUR WITNESS, BASED ON REVEREND KING’S WRITINGS

Jay Mayfield and Congregation

We refuse to believe that we are unable to influence the events which surround us. We refuse to believe that we are so bound to racism and war, that peace, brotherhood and sisterhood are not possible. We believe there is an urgent need for people to work to overcome oppression and violence, without resorting to oppression and violence. We believe that we need to discover a way to live together in peace, a way which rejects revenge, aggression and retaliation. The foundation of this way is love. We believe that truth and unconditional love will have the final word. We believe that people everywhere can have three meals a day for their bodies, education and culture for their minds, and dignity, equality and freedom for their spirits. We believe that what self-centered people have torn down, other-centered people can build up. By the goodness of God at work within people, we believe that brokenness can be healed—“And the lion and the lamb shall lie down together, and everyone will sit under their own vine and fig tree, and none shall be afraid.” INVITATION TO GIVE AND TO SERVE MUSICAL OFFERING

Patty Griffin’s Up to the Mountain is written in homage of Martin Luther King Jr., and is inspired by the final speech he delivered on April 3, 1968. He was assassinated the following day. The speech, known as I’ve Been to the Mountain Top, concludes with these words: I don't know what will happen now; we've got some difficult days ahead. But it really doesn't matter with me now, because I've been to the mountaintop. I don't mind. Like anybody, I would like to live a long life–longevity has its place. But I'm not concerned about that now. I just want to do God's will. And He's allowed me to go up to the mountain. And I've looked over, and I've seen the Promised Land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight that we as a people will get to the Promised Land. So I'm happy tonight; I'm not worried about anything; I'm not fearing any man. Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord. TODAY OFFERING ENVELOPES FOR 2015. If you requested a set of envelopes for 2015, they are available in the Narthex today.
