Donors Making a Difference John and Marie Chiles

John and Marie Chiles have been long-time advocates of the Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing. In 2008 they became members of the LHSON Dean’s Board where they established The Good Samaritan Dean’s Fund and an Endowed Scholarship in Nursing in 2009 as well as provided three simulators for the Sim Training Lab. They received the first Annual Friends of Nursing Award in 2011. The Chiles also made a significant donation to the new LHSON Academic Building and served on the LHSON Gala Task Force during its ten years of successful fundraising.

The endowed scholarship fund provides assistance to deserving students who are enrolled in the LHSON. John and Marie saw a need and recognized an opportunity to help. The Good Samaritan Dean’s Fund was established to help nursing students with emergency needs such as rent, transportation, food and critical needs.

“The Good Samaritan Fund is changing lives at LHSON. The Chiles have been doing this for over a decade and their generosity continues to shine a bright light on the faces of our students each time funding is awarded to meet a critical need. Most of these students would not have continued their education at LHSON and pursue their dream of being a nurse without the Good Samaritan Fund,” said Endalk Tulu, Senior Financial Aid ManagerStudent Services, LHSON.

John and Marie have also supported the Law School for many years establishing two Endowed Scholarships and “The Starr’s Federalist Papers Lecture Series.” They were the founders and organizers of the Strecker Associates in 1989, the original support group for the Mayborn Museum on the Baylor campus. John served as President of the Associates as well as Project Chair for the building of the Museum which opened in 2004. They are Charter Members of Baylor’s Old Main Society, the Endowed Scholarship Society, and Baylor’s Medallion Fellowship. They received Baylor’s Milton T. Gregory Distinguished Service Award, in 1990 the W.R. White Meritorious Service Award and in 2012 they were awarded the prestigious Founder’s Medal from Baylor.

John Houser Chiles, a native of Waxahachie, received his BBA in 1950 and his Juris Doctorate in 1952 both from Baylor. He was President of the Baylor Chamber of Commerce and a member of Alpha Chi Scholarship Society, Delta Sigma Pi and Phi Delta Phi. Upon his graduation, he entered the U.S. Air Force, serving as a Staff Judge Advocate for three years in both the United States and England, as a First Lieutenant. While serving in England he met and married Marie, also a First Lieutenant, serving as the Base Adjutant. After being discharged as a Captain in 1955 he joined Humble Oil and Refining Co., in Houston, now ExxonMobil. He retired as Senior Staff Counsel in 1982.

Marie, a native of Long Island, New York, received her Bachelor’s degree in mathematics at Chatham University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and is a Baylor Alumna By Choice. She retired from the business world in 1960 and became a full-time volunteer for worthy non-profits including The Blue Birds Circle at Methodist Hospital, the Houston Symphony and Holly Hail Retirement Community, serving on their Boards. She was a Docent at Bayou Bend and became an avid student of the Decorative Arts studying in England at the Victorian Society in 1990 and the Attingham Summer School in 1991.

A MESSAGE FROM DEAN PLANK

Navigating Abundant Growth

Iam glad to say that this year has been a year of growth, rebuilding, and community. As I shared at our May Pinning & Recognition Ceremony, we are blessed to have 1,478 nursing students through our in person and online programs. From these students 615 of them are undergraduate students, while the remaining 863 are in our graduate programs. This number does not even include our 322 pre-nursing students who are still at Baylor in Waco. We hope to have each of them here with us at the end of their two years in Waco. Finally, we have 87 CRNA students after 22 graduated in May and 33 student CRNA’s started in June. I am confident you echo my sentiment that we are honored our students have chosen the Louise Herrington School of Nursing of Baylor University and hope that once they graduate they will continue to fling their green and gold afar.

Abundant growth here at the LHSON has prompted the need for more leadership to navigate our expanding nursing programs, faculty, students and staff. The LHSON is pleased to welcome four new Associate Deans taking the helm in Fall 2022 including: Dr. Lisa Jones, Associate Dean for the Pre-Licensure Programs; Dr. Deborah Petty, Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs and Dr. Deborah Shirey and Dr. Stacia Hays, Associate Deans for the Online Graduate Programs. Baylor is blessed by a diverse and highly regarded faculty dedicated to providing an environment that integrates faith and excellent academics. Together we will strive to support the success of our students through our unique philosophy that nursing is a calling.

In recognition of the significance of the field of nursing, the LHSON is pleased to share the news of its placement in the 2023 U.S. News & World Report rankings. LHSON’s undergraduate nursing program is now at No. 39 in the U.S. News national rankings, moving up from No. 58. We are honored to be listed among distinguished nursing programs ranked by U.S. News & World Report. This ranking underscores our commitment to educating and preparing both baccalaureate and graduate-level nurses within a Christian community for professional practice, healthcare leadership, and worldwide service.

In closing, I wanted to leave you with one of my favorite verses, Matthew 25:21 in the parable of the three servants, “The master was full of praise. ‘Well done, my good and faithful servant. You have been faithful in handling this small amount, so now I will give you many more responsibilities.”

International Simulation Conference:

SimGHOSTS 2022 Hosted at LHSON

LEARN. LEAD. SERVE. LEARN. LEAD. SERVE.

The Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing (LHSON) hosted the 12th Annual SimGHOSTS USA 2022 (SGUSA22), August 2 - 5, 2022. Over 300 simulation professionals attended from across the globe (Canada, South Africa, Trinidad & Tobago, New Zealand, etc.) and 39 of the 50 United States. The theme for this year’s conference was, Embracing Connection: Creativity and Community in a Changing World.

Hosting its first international conference was a big undertaking and required collaboration and commitment from the entire LHSON community. Over 150 volunteer slots were filled by LHSON administration, faculty, staff, former staff, students, board members, and friends. These honorary LHSON Sim Team members helped attendees navigate back and forth between the Academic Building and the Clinical Simulation Building. Baylor hospitality was on display and didn’t go unnoticed. Wanting to make the attendees feel at home during their time at LHSON, they were initiated into the Baylor family during the Opening Ceremony and taught to do a proper Sic ‘Em Bears. Throughout the next three days, groups of conference goers were caught posing for the camera as they continued honing this skill.

SGUSA22 filled Sunderland Activity Room which served at the Exhibit Hall and spilled out into the lobby of the Academic Building with 19 exhibitors. These corporate industry leaders included: Gold Sponsor, Laerdal Medical Silver Sponsors, Gaumard Scientific, MedVR Education, Bronze Sponsors, sim2GROW, LLC; Limbs and Things; Nasco Healthcare; Paradigm Medical Systems; PCS-Intelligent Digital Patients; Sentinel U; TacMed Solutions; Surgical Science; Intelligent Video Solutions; MGH Institute of Health Professions; Oxford Medical Simulation; Pocket Nurse; Education Management Solutions (EMS); Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH); Echo Healthcare Media Partner, Healthysimulation. com.

“In just two short years our world and how we deliver healthcare simulation has transformed and continues to evolve,” said Jacqueline McBride, Director of Operations, SimGHOSTS. “A changing world requires new ways of working, ways that are smarter and more agile than ever before. We strongly believe that collaboration accelerates innovation during these transitioning times.”

This in-person event was designed to elevate the healthcare simulation delivery with hands-on workshops, demonstrations and oral presentations. The SG22USA program highlighted the use of technology and virtual environments in simulation programs and aimed to bring the spectrum of simulation professionals together to improve learner and patient outcomes. Among the many outstanding speakers participating during the conference, we were excited that Dr. Shad Deering joined us on August 5 as the Plenary Presentation speaker with

4

a message entitled, Improving Simulation Tools on The Front Lines, A Journey from Design to Distribution. Dr. Deering is a board-certified Maternal-Fetal Medicine physician with the Baylor College of Medicine and CHRISTUS Health where he serves as the Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs at The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio and the System Medical Director of the CHRISTUS Simulation Institute. Additional speakers included: Ginger Kerrick, Vice President and Chief Strategy Officer for Barrios Technology in Houston, Texas; Devin Marble, an accredited film and television producer turned healthcare professional and VR simulation enthusiast and Jeffrey Stout, Simulations Operations Specialist at the University of South Florida.

“This is an exciting opportunity for our school and our simulation program,” said Jeanne Carey, MEd, RN, CHSE-A, Director of Simulation, LHSON. “Here at the Baylor University School of Nursing simulation is recognized as an invaluable teaching strategy in the preparation of safe, competent, and caring healthcare professionals. We are fortunate to have state-of-the-art facilities and a dedicated team of highly-skilled simulation educators. We are honored to be serving as this year’s host for the SimGHOSTS international conference.”

As is customary, the host of next year’s conference was announced during the Closing session. SimGHOSTS USA23 will be held at The Dr. Edwin G. & Dorothy Balbach Davis Global Center at the University of Nebraska in Omaha. The 192,000 square foot center is made up of five distinct levels that work together to create a safe and innovative learning environment

About SimGHOSTS

The SimGHOSTS vision is to empower its community by providing them with the opportunities to meet their like-minded healthcare simulation specialists and simulation industry under one roof to share their knowledge of healthcare, technology, and simulation, and to develop their skills and collaborations further. SimGHOSTS was founded as “GOT SIM” in 2011 by Lance Baily, then Director of the Clinical Simulation Center of Las Vegas. Having served as a Sim Tech, Lance recognized the need for a specialized event which specifically focused on bringing simulation operational teams together. His deans recognized the opportunity to showcase their center and support the emerging profession and were thrilled that almost 100 attendees participated in the first event. The community overwhelmingly demanded the event be continued annually. In 2012, SimGHOSTS leadership established the annual meeting and resource website under a new non-profit organization which achieved federal tax-exempt educational-based 501(c)3 status. The faculty of the US Army Graduate Program in Anesthesia Nursing created two videos intended to assist anesthesia care providers with the use and assembly of the Draw-over (or UPAC) vaporizer. One video covers the UPAC in its native configuration (https:// www.milsuite.mil/video/49742) and the other discusses the addition of mechanical ventilation by mating the UPAC with the newly fielded Hamilton T1 transport ventilator (https://www.milsuite.mil/video/49745). Their placement on CAC-enabled MilSuite site optimally positions this critical information for use by deploying CRNAs and anesthesiologists.

LEARN. LEAD. SERVE.

LEARN. LEAD. SERVE. COVID-19 and Public Health System Resilience Workshop

Collaboration With UT Southwestern Medical Center Emergency Medicine and Hiroshima University (Japan)

On February 28, 2022, Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing (LHSON) collaborated with UT Southwestern Medical Center Emergency Medicine and Hiroshima University (Japan) to host, “COVID-19 and Public Health System Resilience Workshop” with facilitators, Drs. Andrew Stricklin, UTSW and Benjamin Ryan, Baylor University. The workshop is part of a broader research project titled, “Systematically Identifying and Evaluating Strategies for Strengthening Community Resilience,” funded by the World Health Organization (WHO) which has Baylor University and Hiroshima University working in partnership with colleagues to conduct workshops in six countries that include: Australia, Bangladesh, Japan, Slovenia, Turkey and the United States.

“COVID-19 has brought to vivid life what systemic risk and complex risk scenarios mean,” said Nahuel Arenas, Deputy Chief, Regional Office for the Americas & the Caribbean, United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR). “The pandemic comes on top of an increased frequency and intensity of climate-related disasters. In today’s interconnected world, human, economic, political and environmental systems are in an increasingly complex interaction. In this context, risk governance needs to be truly multisectoral and transdisciplinary. Good risk governance, at all levels, is important because we are in real danger of not achieving the Sendai Framework targets for reducing disaster losses, and we know that nothing undermines sustainable development like disasters or the recurrence of a pandemic such as the world faces today.”

14

The workshop at LHSON, offered in-person and virtually, allowed participants to learn from the COVID-19 pandemic by identifying strategies for strengthening public health system resilience, which is vital as we prepare for future disease outbreaks and disasters. The goal was to help local health systems, and societies, find a way to continue functioning during a crisis. The workshop findings will be discussed later this year at the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction in South Korea, where the project team will compare and contrast recommendations for strengthening resilience in different parts of the world.

The target audience for the February workshop included: individuals involved in providing clinical care, public health, emergency management and other community services during the COVID-19 pandemic and other disasters. This includes, but is not limited to: doctors, nurses and other clinicians, emergency management representatives, organizations involved in supplying medical devices, equipment, food and other essential services, environmental health specialists, epidemiologists, health promotion, transportation experts, academics and educators.

Men in Doctoral Nursing Practice

Michael Williams, DNP (c), MSN, FNP-BC

LHSON is so proud of one of our post-MSN graduate students, Michael Williams, who was 1 of 4 speakers/ panelist in a “Men in Doctoral Nursing Practice” panel with the DNPs of color organization on March 24th. He was part of a panel discussion on navigating the nursing profession and doctoral nursing practice from a male perspective. He is also one of the 13 students on the Zambia mission team co-lead by Drs. Tiffany Flood and Kelly Rossler.

Michael Williams (He/Him/His) is a board-certified Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN). As a bilingual (English, Spanish) APRN who has specialized in Internal Medicine, he has had the opportunity to provide care for a culturally diverse and medically complex patient population for over four years at a Federally Qualified Health Center (FHQC). He has a great deal of experience in caring for patients from various socioe-conomic levels and communities. Michael credits his love for medicine to growing up in New York City and to his parents, who are from Panama. His upbringing exposed him to many of the healthcare challenges and obstacles to care first-hand. Being of Panamanian descent allowed him to see the importance of understanding culture and its impact on delivering care. These experiences led to seeking and ultimately obtaining a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing ‘09 and Master’s of Science in Nursing‘16 at the University of Tampa. While developing his clinical practice as a provider, he has focused on his development as an educator in the nursing profession as well. Michael served as a clinical instructor at Yale University for three years and was a clinical instructor at Texas State University. Along with teaching, Michael recognizes the importance of obtaining advanced education and as a first-generation college graduate himself, he initiated an endowment scholarship for first-generation college students at his alma mater. Michael believes community care is essential to the advancement of society. The philosophy that guides his practice is to provide the highest level of care through meaningful and collaborative relationships with patients and all members of the community. Community engagement is important and he actively participates in various events; i.e. panelist on health- related topics, 5k runs, health fair, etc. He has also authored peer-reviewed poems related to social issues in the community. Michael firmly believes improving healthcare outcomes begins with educating and empowering the community that he serves.

Raises Over $1 Million for Nursing Student Scholarships

On Saturday, April 30, 2022, The Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing (LHSON), hosted 600 guests at The Dallas Renaissance for its 10th and final Going for the Gold Gala, raising over $1 million. Since the inaugural Gala in 2014, the Gala has become a transformational fundraising event providing critical resources for the nursing school and its students.

The evening’s festivities were memorable. The Gala began at 6:00 p.m. with the National Anthem performed by Hebron Road and a warm welcome from Mary Ann Hill, current Gala Taskforce Chair, joined by Donna Dee Floyd and Angela Bowman, past Gala Taskforce Chairs. Looking back over the last 10 years, guests enjoyed watching a nostalgic gala video. Remarks were then shared by Linda A. Livingstone, Ph.D., President of Baylor University followed by an invocation by Steven R. Newton, Baylor Scott & White Health, Chief Growth Officer. After dinner, Hebron Road performed “You Say” and Dr. Linda Plank, Dean of the LHSON, gave an overview of the nursing school. Serving as the moderator for the panel discussion of speakers was Pat Nunley, Baylor Radio Color Analyst who introduced to the stage, Clyde Hart, Darold Williamson, Jeremy Wariner and Michael Johnson (via Zoom).

Coach Clyde Hart served over 5 decades as Baylor’s Head Coach for Track and Field. He coached 9 Olympic medalists who won a total of 13 Olympic gold medals. Among those were Michael Johnson who captured Olympic Gold in 1992, 1996 and 2000; Jeremy Wariner in 2004 and 2008 and Darold Williamson in 2004.

The evening continued with Janis Kovar, Senior Director of Development of the LHSON and a student testimonial

from Taylor Reynolds, LHSON BSN ’17. Soon after the Live Auction began and Fund-the-Need. Closing out the evening was Mary Ann Hill and a final performance by Hebron Road singing “Under God.”

Support from sponsors, underwriters and volunteers remains crucial every year. Special thanks to Gala event chair, Mary Ann Hill and the 75 volunteers of the Gala Task Force Committee, 47 Gala Student Ambassadors and 43 Dean’s Board members. This year, Gala proceeds focused on the nursing school’s highest priority, scholarships for nursing students.

LHSON is passionate about preparing future Baylor nurses. Past Galas have featured champion athletes and celebrities such as: Texas Governor Greg Abbott (virtual 2020 gala); Sean Lee, #50 Dallas Cowboys linebacker and his wife Megan Lee (2019 gala); Laura Bush, Former First Lady of the United States and Dr. Linda Livingstone, President of Baylor University (2018 gala); Derek Haas, co-creator and executive producer of NBC’s hit television series Chicago Fire, Chicago PD, Chicago Med and Chicago Justice (2017 gala); Noah Galloway, a wounded Operation Iraqi Freedom U.S. Army war veteran hero and finalist on the TV program, “Dancing with the Stars” along with Terrance Williams, Dallas Cowboys Wide Receiver (2016 gala); Heisman Trophy winner and NFL Quarterback Robert Griffin III (RGIII) and former Baylor linebacker and NFL Hall of Famer, Mike Singletary (2015 gala); America’s gold medal legend Mary Lou Retton (2014 gala); former Dallas Cowboys running back Emmitt Smith (2013 gala) and Baylor’s championship-winning women’s basketball coach Kim Mulkey who joined former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman at (2012 inaugural gala).

The Going for the Gold Gala celebrates the support of Mark and Laurie Nielsen, of Nacogdoches, Texas, this year as Golden Grand Gala Hosts.

The Nielsens have long been a part of the LHSON family, starting in 1978 when Laurie graduated with her Bachelors of Science in Nursing degree. The Nielsens established the Laurie Kim Johnson Nielsen and Mark A. Nielsen Endowed Scholarship Fund at the Louise Herrington School of Nursing to help deserving students at Baylor University.

The Nielsens established this scholarship in memory of Laurie’s parents, Rev. Isaac and Sue Butler Johnson, who sacrificed greatly so that Laurie (BSN ’78) could attend Baylor University’s Louise Herrington School of Nursing. Upon her graduation, Laurie became a registered nurse, a calling from which she retired after 37 years of service.

Dr. Mark Nielsen served as a prominent board-certified urologist in Nacogdoches, until his retirement from his private practice, Nielsen Urology. He received his MD from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas in 1980.

The students, faculty and staff of the Louise Herrington School of Nursing give abiding thanks for the dedication and support of Mark and Laurie in meeting the needs for generations to come through their support.

Anita Jones saw an immediate need for nurses like those who graduate from the FastBacc® program at the Louise Herrington School of Nursing. She is passionate about helping these students receive a quality nursing education in a Christian environment so they may go into the world to make a difference in the lives of those they serve through their new career. She and her late husband, Dale Jones, established the Barnabas Endowed Scholarship Fund in Nursing.

Anita earned her B.A. degree in 1961 from Baylor University. She has been active in the Baylor University Women’s Council of Dallas, where she has served as President, chairman of numerous committees, and is a Patron member. She is a member of the Louise Herrington School of Nursing Dean’s Board. Anita has also served on the advisory board for the Baylor University School of Education in Waco, Texas. She is involved in church, civic and community activities in her community.

Anna Belle Briggs Johnson earned her B.S.N. degree from Baylor University in 1948. Anna Belle was part of the Cade Corps program which trained more nurses to provide additional RNs for the war effort.

She worked at Baylor Hospital where she met the love of her life, Emmett Johnson. Anna Belle now resides in Alabama.

18

The Going for the Gold Gala gratefully recognizes Dr. D.M. Edwards, of Tyler, as a Golden Grand Gala Host. D.M. has been an incredible source of support for the students, faculty and staff of the Louise Herrington School of Nursing, and his continued support of the Gala has helped meet the needs of countless students. In 2014, he established the D. M. Edwards Endowed Scholarship Fund in Nursing in Honor of Judge Abner V. and Mary Wilson McCall to honor the legacy of distinguished leadership of Baylor’s former President and First Lady.

D.M. Edwards earned his B.B.A. degree from Baylor University in 1976. In 2016, he received an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree from East Texas Baptist University. He serves as Chairman and CEO of Edwards Investments. Dr. Edwards is an active member of his community, currently serving on many volunteer boards and in leadership capacities throughout his community, as well as Baylor University.

The LHSON’s students, faculty and staff give heartfelt thanks for Dr. Edwards and all he has done and continues to do to help our students learn, lead and serve.

Angela Johnson Bowman earned the B.S.N. from Baylor University in 1987. For many years following her time at Baylor, Angela served as a newborn intensive care nurse, caring for premature babies and their families. More recently, she has been instrumental in fundraising efforts for Baylor School of Nursing serving as co-chair for the Going for the Gold Gala for four years, which raises much-needed scholarship funds for Baylor University nursing students. Angela is a member of the Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing Dean’s Board and also a member of the Baylor University Women’s Council of Dallas. Dr. Brad Bowman also graduated from Baylor University with the B.A. degree in 1985 and earned the Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine. He is a volunteer and board member for the Lighthouse For Christ – Eye Mission in Mombasa, Kenya, and a past board member of Brother Bill’s Helping Hand alongside Angela who also served as past president of the Brother Bill’s Helping Hand Women’s Council. Brad is a partner with Cornea Associates of Texas, and he and Angela are both members of the University’s Give Light National Campaign Steering Committee.

Angela and Brad have three children: Andrew, Caroline and John Bradley, daughter-in-law, Kate, and new grandchild named Padgitt.

LEARN. LEAD. SERVE. 2022 Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing Mission to India

Serving globally, this summer 16 faculty and students from the Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing (LHSON) traveled to India from June 20 – July 3, 2022 to learn, lead, and serve with long term clinical partners. While in India, students and faculty came along side our clinical partners and led requested evidence-based practice, research and educational projects as described below. Additionally, students took part in a local praise and worship service and learned about the culture of India through an excursion to the Taj Mahal and exploration of Delhi.

Maternal Hemorrhage Evidence Based Practice Project

One project focus was the implementation of the Maternal Hemorrhage Rapid Recognition Project

funded by the Dean’s Grant. India is the 2nd country in the world for maternal mortality with maternal hemorrhage as the primary cause of this preventable death. In 2019, on a tour of labor and delivery, there was not a hemorrhage cart for nurses and physicians to have quick access to needed equipment or medications. Secondly, when a woman begins to bleed, blood loss is monitored by visual estimation rather than quantification. Lastly, the Chief of OB/Gyn requested simulation training. God certainly had a plan in this project even better than we expected. While at the hospital, BU LHSON faculty, graduate and undergraduate nursing students, participated in leading an obstetric hemorrhage simulation scenario. Dr. Renee Jones, Dr. Lyn Prater, and Graduate Midwifery Student Eryn Goetz led simulations on estimated blood loss followed by quantification and obstetric hemorrhage with the use of a hemorrhage cart. A Pre- and Post-test

26

survey design was utilized to assess learning and is currently under analysis. In the future, nursing staff will bring the cart to the bedside at every vaginal delivery to be ready should a hemorrhage occur. All of these activities took place in the Simulation Education and Research Centre established by BU in 2017 and funded by the USAID.

The Pediatric Palliative Care Research Project

BU LHSON Students and nursing students from India also led an interdisciplinary pediatric palliative care project that was requested by the hospital’s palliative care team. For this project, students demonstrated the use of pediatric comfort care carts and led simulation therapeutic play scenarios to facilitate therapeutic communication between interdisciplinary health providers and pediatric patients. The students used validated tools to evaluate the project. Dr. Garner will mentor them through submission of project results to the Conference on Undergraduate Research in the fall of 2022. Our graduate student, Eryn Goetz, collected supplies for the comfort carts and donated them to the palliative care department. The comfort care carts were purchased by BU as part of Dr. Renee Flippo and team’s Brown Grant and will be used in the new BU established Women and Children’s Healthcare and Research Centre funded by the USAID.

Online and Simulation Teaching and Learning Conference for Nurse Educators

BU LHSON faculty, in collaboration with the State’s Trained Nursing Association of India and the hospital’s school of nursing, conducted a 2-day workshop for nurse educators on online and simulation teaching and learning strategies. Over 50 nurse educators from 16 different schools attended. A simulation Research Interest Group was started and will work on simulation projects together over the next year. BU LHSON student Shannon Rose presented a digital assignment from her Research Course alongside the hospital’s nursing students who completed the same assignment in India.

Praise and Worship

Faculty and students attended two praise and worship services and Dr. Abraham led the students in learning a praise song in the Hindi language which was a huge hit with our partners!

Cultural Excursion

At the end of the trip, BU LHSON students and faculty participated in a cultural excursion to visit one of the 7 Wonders of the World, the Taj Mahal and to tour through Old and New Delhi.

Team India 2022 would like to thank BU LHSON administrators, faculty, staff, students, mission committee, advocates, alumni, and the BU mission department for their prayers and support of this mission. Glorifying God through the vocation of nursing is a calling and we feel privileged for this opportunity to live out this calling on mission to India.

Global Health in Africa Study Abroad

Global Health in Africa is the annual interdisciplinary study abroad for graduate and undergraduate nursing, public health and related disciplines taught by Drs. Lori A. Spies (Nursing) and Beth Lanning (Public health). Key global health concepts are contextually explored from a OneHealth perspective. The students study in beautiful Rwanda and learn about health and research firsthand as they implement health screening and a longitudinal research study with our in-country partners.

Rio Grande Valley Summer Mission Trip

LHSON students and faculty participated in a summer mission trip to the Rio Grande Valley from June 4-10. They primarily assisted at the Catholic Charities Respite Center in McAllen, Texas. The team also helped at a women’s ministry and food pantry at a local church while providing health information to the community.

Donated PPE Supplies from the BU-Waco

In late June, Jeanne Carey, Director of Simulation for the LHSON was attending a Friday training at Baylor in Waco and got some good news. Prior to her trip, we were notified by Sarah Nelson from BU Missions that there is a surplus of PPE supplies available, if interested. Jeanne met up with Wyndi Klement, University Biosafety Officer during the lunch break and she provided us with 2 cases of N95 masks (960 per case), 2 cases of face shields, some pre-assembled Decontamination Kits with Tyvek suits (not sure how we will use these), and one case of shoe covers and bouffant head covers that we can use for our Periop Elective course. The N95 masks retail for around $800 per case, so that alone is a huge savings! During Jeanne lunch break that Friday she met up with Wyndi in the parking lot of the Science building to load up the LHSON minivan to bring everything back to the LHSON in Dallas.

NSNA 70th Nursing Student Convention

The LHSON is excited to have had 10 students attend the NSNA 70th Nursing Student Convention in Salt Lake City. Inspired by the conference theme, “Here’s to the Heroes,” students participated in national elections, presenting posters, voting on resolutions as well as attended professional focus sessions on a wide variety of topics. Plus, Savannah Groesbeeck-Sena (FastBacc® ‘22) serves as NSNA’s Nominating and Elections Committee South Representative. Sic’Em Bears!

Summer Study Abroad in London

LHSON study abroad in London provided the opportunity for students and faculty to visit the Breast Cancer Care Center in London.

Sigma International Nursing Research Congress

LHSON was proud to be a platinum sponsor of this years Sigma International Nursing Research Congress in Edinburgh, Scotland, July 21-25.

LHSON Alum

Savannah Groesbeeck-Sena

The Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing is proud of Savannah Groesbeeck-Sena who graduated from the FastBacc program in May 2022 and served as the 2021-2022 National Student Nurses Association (NSNA) Nominating and Elections (NEC) Committee.

Q: Tell us about serving as a member of the NSNA Nominating and Elections (NEC) Committee and how that transpired?

A: Serving as a member of 2021-2022 National Student Nurses Association was an unexpected but incredible blessing. When I started FastBacc, I knew that I had a strong desire to get involved and serve. After my summer semester, I became a member of Baylor Student Nurses Association (BSNA) and accepted positions as a representative for Baylor University’s Health Committee, and President for Baylor’s Nurses Christian Fellowship.

Towards the end of my Fall semester, because I also became a member of NSNA, I received an email from NSNA stating that the original elected representative for NEC-South had resigned and a mid-year spot had opened. Being in FastBacc, I didn’t have the opportunity to get involved at my state or national level, so when this position opened, I saw it as a fantastic opportunity to get involved. Once I applied, I received various feedback from NSNA about the status of my application, moving forward in the interviewing process, interviewing with the chair of the NEC at the time, and finally it came down to myself and one other applicant. At the end, I was overjoyed and blown-away by being who they selected, and the door God opened for me.

Serving with NSNA not only strengthened my skills as a leader but prepared me for a future in healthcare. It required being able to balance meetings, school, family, and other aspects of life, while still making time for myself and my faith. Through NSNA, I was able to travel and meet leaders, organizations, and students who are making in impact in today’s world. I gained insight on how to incorporate individual perspectives into the future of nursing, and I learned how to advocate more efficiently for myself and those I was representing.

Q: What inspired you to go through the FastBacc program?

A: Being a student at Baylor was a dream of mine. Even before getting involved in the medical field, I toured Baylor with my dad and absolutely loved it. When I started looking at nursing schools, Baylor’s program was one of the first options I looked at. Seeing that Baylor offered an accelerated program solidified mine and my husband’s decision on applying. Already having a bachelor’s degree, I knew that I didn’t want to go through another four-year program, and I also needed an option that allowed me to go back to work within a year. Baylor’s FastBacc program had everything I hoped for in nursing school. Being in-person and obtaining continuous support from the staff and faculty pushed me to succeed, while the clinical placements allowed me to grow my knowledge in patient care. From day one, I felt like I had a family at Baylor and people I could continue to go to with anything. My husband and I moved to Texas for this program, and looking back, we both agree it has been one of the best decisions we have ever made.

Q: What does life look like for you now post-graduation?

A: Post-graduation life has been a whirlwind. Adjusting to my new job as a cardiovascular nurse, and catching up on long-awaited family time, has been a journey! Starting in 2023, I begin my graduate journey as a student at Duke University in their MSN/DNP program focusing on family medicine and leadership. Beginning at a community college with no set plan for my future, to ending up as a Baylor alum and a student of Duke, has truly been a testimony for me of God’s greater plan.

A: Being a Baylor alum means that I will always have an extended family filled with faith and guidance. The opportunities that have come into my life over this last year have been incredible and I attribute it back to God calling me to go to Baylor. I am forever thankful for the chance to have been selected as a student at Baylor, and as an alum, I am proud to wear my green and gold!

For much of my college application process, Baylor felt unattainable. I had always been academically driven and knew the Lord was calling me to healthcare. However, my financial status was giant in front of me, telling me it would take a miracle to get me where I wanted to go. My parents immigrated from Ethiopia to America in the late 90s. They sacrificed their comfort for the opportunities my sister and I could one day have. My parents spent my childhood working tirelessly to make ends meet. The Lord is kind and we maintained afloat. However, when the time came for college, I never thought a school like Baylor would be feasible. I applied and by the grace of God was admitted. When the time came down to commit—I felt the weight of uncertainty. How would I afford the next four “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, I realized that if I followed God wherever He led me, I would be provided for in those places. Now, I am going into my senior year as a Baylor University nursing student, and I feel an overwhelming sense of gratitude. I am grateful that God gave me
