teadfast support from Pamela K. and Michael E. Jones of Tyler, Texas has been a longtime blessing over the years at the Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing (LHSON). “Planned giving allows you to help LHSON now and also to be part of its future,” said Mike. “Becoming involved long term allows you to increase your giving and develop a feeling of partnership. It is also fulfilling to watch as the LHSON grows and prospers.” The Jones generously established two endowment funds at the LHSON that include: The John Wesley and Doris Elizabeth B. Wood Endowed Scholarship Fund in Nursing and the S. Franklin and Helen Jones Endowed Mission Fund in the Louise Herrington School of Nursing. They have also been loyal sponsors of the LHSON Going for the Gold Gala for nine years and volunteer their time and talent by serving on the Gala Taskforce Committee, the LHSON Board of Advocates and were active with the LHSON Building Philanthropy Committee. Additionally, they continue to serve on The Give Light National Campaign Steering Committee and are recognized by BU in the Barnabas Circle, Judge R.E.B. Baylor Society and Endowed Scholarship Society. Honoring the legacy of their daughter-in-law Amanda Jones, Mike and Pam and friends of the family named one of the conference rooms at the new LHSON Academic Building in her memory.

Administration and Juris Doctor from Baylor University. He has been involved with the Baylor Law Alumni Association, Alumni Association, Phi Delta Phi, as well as the Bush Library Steering Committee. Throughout his 34 years as a trial lawyer, Mike practiced at Potter Minton, P.C. in Tyler, Texas. An avid supporter of the LHSON, Pam first became involved with the nursing school when she was asked to help with a Tyler dinner hosted in honor of the LHSON namesake, Louise Herrington Ornelas (affectionately known to many as Ms. Lou). “We were life-long friends with Lou,” said Pam. “Through our association with her, we became aware of this wonderful institution, its work and its great needs – chief of which was scholarship support. We wanted to be a small part of helping future nurses.” Mike and Pam are two of Baylor’s strongest advocates in the Tyler area for both the nursing school and Baylor University. Pam attended Baylor University and later transferred to Texas Women’s University where she received her Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene. Mike and Pam’s family includes their son Camden (BBA, ’02) and grandchildren, Nash and Lyle Jane in addition to their daughter, Megan (BFA, ’06) son-in-law Michael Doss (BBA, ’06), and granddaughter Norah.

“Nurses play such an important role in caring for us from birth to death,” said Mike. “Who does not know someone whose baby was in peril that speaks reverently of the nurses that took care of their child? Who does not remember a nurse who showed compassion to a dying loved one? Nurses may be underpaid, but when they meet needs, they are never under appreciated. Pam and I can see no better purpose than supplying the world with more Christian nurses.” Originally from Tulsa, Oklahoma, Mike (BS, ‘75, JD, ‘77) received his Bachelor of Science in Business

Unprecedented Times Inspire Faith and Fortitude S ince I have been serving as the Interim Dean of the Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing (LHSON) starting July 2020, I know our readers are very aware of the difficult year we all have experienced with the pandemic, social injustice and political turmoil.

So, I prefer to communicate all the great things that have continued to happen here at LHSON. In May, 201 BSN students graduated (and 74 in Dec) and began their careers as the hands and feet of Christ.  Plus, 94.55% passed their state boards on the first try. Also, our 11th cohort of FastBacc® students started. This was our second largest cohort with 86 students and that is drastically larger than the 24 students in the inaugural cohort of 2009. The FastBacc® track has been so successful that we started a new track of Distance Accelerated BSN students but this group will learn totally online and have the clinical experiences in their neighborhood hospitals.  Our goal is that many students from rural parts of Texas will become Baylor nurses and stay in their communities to work at their local hospital. In August, 119 students from BU joined us for their two years of nursing school. All three of these pre-licensure groups started nursing school while the pandemic was progressing. They never hesitated to progress towards graduation so they could join the nursing workforce and help with this overwhelming situation. In addition, our graduate program admitted students in May, August and January.

3

As of this writing, LHSON has over 500 graduate students in 44 states/territories, 1 in Canada and 1 serving in an Army Post Office in Europe. Looking ahead, in January 2021, our number of graduate students surpassed the number of pre-licensure students. A Pediatric Nurse Practitioner track began in August joining the Nurse Midwifery, Neonatal Nurse Practitioner, Family Nurse Practitioner and Executive Nurse Leadership tracks. Plans are being made to add an Acute Care Geriatric Nurse Practitioner track next January 2022. Presently, we have over 1,132 registered with projections to grow to 2,400 by 2024.  We have learned how to teach and learn online.  We have learned how to have meetings, counseling sessions and mentoring online. We have found multiple programs that enhance learning when clinical experiences are not possible. Many of the new ways to teach will remain a part of our program even after COVID-19 is gone. We consider all these news ways of teaching/learning to be the “silver lining” of the pandemic.  God has taken care of us this past year just like He has done for the previous 111 years. We are blessed to be able to further His kingdom every day at LHSON. In gratitude,

Extensive Space Expansion, 8 New Life-Like Manikins and Equipment Upgrades

triving to remain competitive in an everchanging academic environment, the Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing (LHSON) reimagined its Clinical Simulation Building (CSB) in fall 2020 to grow in scope and stature. In fact, the CSB admitted several new patients, also known as manikins or high-fidelity simulators, to its expanded patient care area floors.

LEARN. LEAD. SERVE.

Gaining some historic perspective, the opening of the new LHSON Academic Building on Washington Avenue in June 2018 left behind the simulation lab to occupy the former four-story nursing school building on Worth Street. Rebranding the building as The Clinical Simulation Building also included expanding from the original three simulation rooms with approximately 2,500 square feet to an outstanding four floors with over 25,000 square feet.

LEARN. LEAD. SERVE.

Strolling through the front doors of the reconfigured building, the space previously used for Student Services offices on the first floor is now home to the LHSON Simulation Administration Suite and a Pediatric Sim Suite. Classrooms originally on the second floor were redesigned to create expanded Health Assessment and PNP lab spaces, a Periop Sim Lab, a Mental Health Day Room setting, and a Hybrid Learning space. The third floor has also been transformed from The Dean’s Suite to an Outpatient Sim Suite, including 15 individual exam rooms. Faculty offices that were also on this floor are now an inpatient lab setting incorporating a Review of Systems. There is also an allocated space to develop an Extended Reality (XR) Sim Suite. The fourth floor which used to be home to the Learning Resource Center (LRC) now includes an OB Sim Suite including two rooms with labor and delivery, postpartum, and a newborn nursery, a Community/ Home Health setting set as a full makeshift apartment,

two auditorium-style classrooms, and a large multipurpose sim space where the LRC used to reside.

This expansion incorporated larger spaces for skills labs and high-fidelity simulation rooms. Presented with the challenge to use a space not designed for simulation, the Sim Team quickly constructed a workable simulation hospital with areas of future growth. In the summer of 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the sim staff improved the building and incorporated all 25,000 square feet on the available four floors. This expansion provided the necessary space to allow for social distancing. LHSON strategically took an existing building and used spaces to create a unique teaching environment.

“Simulation is an important teaching strategy in our programs; its utilization is growing and our lab space has tripled in size over the past 18 months. This rapid expansion in physical space is challenging our ability to equip the labs as needed,” said Jeanne Carey, Director of Clinical Simulation, LHSON. “Creating realistic clinical experiences in a safe space is an important feature of nursing skills labs. Students need to practice skills dozens of times prior to performing that skill on a patient. This deliberate practice should be performed in a manner that closely mimics the clinical setting to promote the transfer of knowledge, skills and attitudes or also known as KSAs.” Adding to the excitement about the newly retrofitted CSB, grant funds were received from a local Dallas Foundation for the project titled, Enhancing Realism to Promote Knowledge Transfer from Nursing Skills Lab to the Bedside. This grant enabled the LHSON to update its Professional Nursing Practice (PNP) Skills Lab at the CSB with new manikin simulators and equipment. The lab has the

5

capacity for 11 learning stations, each outfitted with a hospital bed, manikin simulator and other equipment to replicate a clinical setting. The goal was to create an environment that can amplify real-life experiences for LHSON students, providing opportunities to learn new skills and improve performance of existing skills. The new equipment was installed in Fall 2020 and serves 520 undergraduate and 200 graduate students annually. Every undergraduate student participates in a PNP skills lab during their program. The lab hosts other simulation activities for undergraduate and graduate students, including Open Lab sessions. All Level 1 nursing (undergraduate) students spend five hours per week for the first seven weeks of the semester in the PNP skills lab; they learn dozens of new skills and work toward competency prior to starting clinical practice. Graduate students utilize simulation space for intensives. Other BU programs, including the Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program and the new Doctor of Occupational Therapy (OTD) program, utilize this lab space during their simulation training. Beverly Rychlik Price, Simulation Operations Specialist, noticed the interaction among the students and faculty changed with the presence of the new manikins. “With the addition of our new manikins, I witnessed students using a manikin weighing 150 pounds to learn how to properly place a patient in prone position, given their recent teaching about COVID-19 positive patients. The Lifecast manikins have such fluidity in the joints allowing a realistic approach to turning. This is in stark contrast to our older manikins which weigh 35 pounds and have stiff arms and legs.” In addition, Echo Healthcare is pleased to partner with Baylor University and looks forward to seeing the changing landscape of nursing education in a dynamic fashion. According to Kevin King, CEO of Echo Healthcare, “As a lifelong learner and clinical educator I’m thrilled to see the most lifelike technology implemented within the nursing program and know that by creating the suspension of disbelief utilizing this technology, the students will be better prepared for the real clinical environment where I spent 20 years of my career.” BU LHSON went one step further than any other customer in North America and worked collaboratively with Echo Healthcare to customize their simulator manikins to reflect real patients and conditions. According to Mr. King, “This first of its kind request is groundbreaking and will allow an emotional connection between students and technology. I can hardly wait to hear the results!”

Kylee Reeves is a 16-year-old Caucasian female with a history of cystic fibrosis. She’s admitted with fever, shortness of breath, and wheezing. Don’t be fooled by her beauty and cute freckles. As a typical teenager, active in social media and pretty much glued to her phone, Kylee is rebelling against her CF diagnosis and is noncompliant with her treatment regimen. Millie Larsen is an 84-year-old Caucasian female who lives alone in a small home. Her husband, Harold passed away a year ago and she has a cat, Snuggles, who is very important to her. Millie has one daughter, Dina Olsen, who is 50, that lives nearby, and is Millie’s major support system. Her current medical problems include hypertension, glaucoma, osteoarthritis of the knee, stress incontinence, osteoporosis, & hypercholesterolemia. Once discharged, Millie is anxious to get back to teaching the Silver Sneakers exercise class at the YMCA. Henry Williams is a 69-year-old African American, retired rail system engineer who lives in a small apartment with his wife, Ertha. Henry was admitted to the hospital last night after he called the doctor and told him that he could not catch his breath. Henry has several medical problems including COPD, hypertension, and high cholesterol. Henry and Ertha had one son who was killed in the war 10 years ago. Lillian Chambers, a 30-year-old Korean American female with no significant medical history, presented to the emergency department early this morning with acute right lower quadrant abdominal pain. After a diagnosis of ruptured appendix, an urgent appendectomy was performed. She insisted the bar be replaced in her new industrial piercing immediately after surgery so the holes would not close. Lillian is college educated, works full time as a social worker, and lives with her husband, Jay, and their infant son. Jacob Laduke is a 28-year-old Native American male with a history of ulcerative colitis. He was directly admitted to the medical unit on Tuesday evening with a diagnosis of dehydration. Fifteen days ago, Jacob underwent a partial colectomy with creation of a transverse colostomy. Jacob’s girlfriend Virginia has been taking care of him since discharge and reports that Jacob has resisted participation in colostomy care. Virginia needs to return to her full-time job and in concerned with how Jacob will manage without her at this side. Jacob is very self-conscious of the acne he’s fought since puberty.

Leading the Way LEARN. LEAD. SERVE. to Help Others New Corona Care Handbook

LHSON FastBacc® Student Steps in to Help

S

triving to exemplify the school motto, Learn.Lead.Serve.®, Katie Bott, a FastBacc® student in fall 2020 at the Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing (LHSON), wanted to make a positive difference during the pandemic. Since August 2020, Katie has been working with a global health nonprofit, One Good Turn, (OGT) and helped support the publication of the “Corona Care Handbook.” Dr. Ann Messer, Founder, Executive Director and Board Chair of OGT, and her colleague, Dr. Theresa Spalding, wrote the content for the handbook and Katie gathered COVID research for the team to review. The handbook is full of helpful information and quickly became a best-seller on Amazon. To view a free download visit: www.onegoodturn.org/free-corona-care-handbook.  With COVID-19 considered a new virus, the information regarding the virus was lacking in the beginning of 2020. However, as time went on, more and more information was presented but was difficult to decipher between what was factual and what was false. OGT knew that the only way to help was to condense everything into one factual, simple, easy-to-read source that would be accessible to the public. “I hope this handbook eases some of the anxiety surrounding COVID-19 such as the anxiety about not knowing what COVID-19 really is, how its spread and more,” said Katie. “I also hope that people can learn and implement simple ways to help fight the spread.” Katie’s inspiration to help with this project blossomed from a personal experience. In 2020 she lived at home with her mother, who is a public school teacher; her aunt who has special needs and her 91-year- old grandfather who has dementia. She and her mother both contracted COVID-19 earlier in the pandemic and were both very sick. Katie said they both followed the recommendations from the Corona Care Handbook and neither her grandfather nor her aunt became sick!

17

“What drew me to OGT was their focus on teaching,” said Katie. “Instead of going into impoverished countries, providing care, and then leaving, OGT has an emphasis on teaching the local health care providers and their community members. This teaching is built on the providers’ skill sets while utilizing the medications and diagnostic tools that are actually available in these communities. Instead of one-time clinics, OGT partners with communities for the long term. Following each project, they establish an open channel of communication that allows them to serve as an educational and informational resource for community health workers who otherwise would not have access to up-to-date medical information.” Making an impact at OGT during an unprecedented time in healthcare, Katie is a Dallas native and received her B.S. in Human Development and Family Sciences with an emphasis in Early Childhood from the University of Texas at Austin. A few years after transferring to North Carolina for a work opportunity in the private childcare sector, Katie completed a Nurse Aide course which inspired her to take a leap of faith and apply to the LHSON FastBacc® program. “If someone had told me that I would be starting an accelerated BSN program during a global pandemic, I would have thought they were crazy,” said Katie. “I don’t think it would have been possible without my faith. 2020 challenged me in ways I didn’t know were possible and God has revealed strengths within myself that I had no idea existed.” “Katie is a remarkable young woman and I’m so glad to be working with her,” said Dr. Messer, One Good Turn. “As all organizations, large and small work together to fight this pandemic we will create stronger and more interconnected communities as we prevail against this new illness.” One Good Turn is an international medical nonprofit organization. Their mission is to provide practical medical education to neglected and underserved communities all over the world. Although they see patients wherever they go, its main focus is on teaching: using each patient-clinician encounter as an modeling opportunity to develop and teach culturally appropriate “best practices” to health workers who have minimal access to medical education.

Therapeutic Patient Communication Research, Using See-Through Masks Underscoring our new routine of wearing masks invariably has triggered a question about whether wearing a standard cloth or disposable mask impedes nurses’ therapeutic communication with patients. Furthermore, would the use of a see-through mask be a solution to improve learning and therapeutic communication between nursing students and patients during a psychiatric simulation? Exploration of this pertinent subject is being conducted in a research study at the Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing (LHSON) by Elesha R. Roberts, PhD, RN, CNEcl, CHSE, Albert Schweitzer Lifetime Fellow, Jonas Nursing Scholar. Dr. Robert’s research is titled, Can You Read My Lips, Promoting Therapeutic Communication Using See-Through Masks. Dr. Roberts research ran from mid-October through early November 2020. The project was led by Principal Investigator (PI), Dr. Elesha Roberts along with CoPI, Michelle Ruby Jamison, DNP, APRN, FNP-C, Clinical Assistant Professor, LHSON. “The lack of effective communication can lead to misunderstandings, conflict, mistrust, missed opportunities, or low morale,” said Dr. Roberts. “As a psychiatric mental health professor, I believe in healthy communication not only with my students but with patients as well. Considering patients are already dealing with barriers in their lives related to their health and mental disease, poor communication should not add to their anxiety. Effective communication should promote healing.”

I

n spring 2020 the Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing (LHSON) anticipated hosting its 9th annual Going for the Gold Gala at the Westin Galleria on April 25 however COVID-19 set in and caused the event to be postponed. Each year the gala is an important fundraising event for the LHSON and missing a year would mean less funds for our most critical needs at the nursing school such as scholarships for nursing students who are called to serve those in need. Striving to be compliant and relevant, we instead hosted a virtual gala on November 12, 2020 at 7:00 p.m. The live stream online event captured 200 viewers and included a weeklong silent auction and live auction on the night of the virtual gala. Amidst the challenging year, the 2020 virtual gala surpassed silent auction fundraising totals from the previous two years raising more than $27,000 from 124 silent auction items, plus raising over $51,000 from 11 live auction items. Overall, combining the gala sponsorships, silent and live auctions, Fund-the-Need giving opportunities and registration gifts the 2020 gala raised approximately $613,000. Since the debut of the inaugural gala in 2012, the Going for the Gold Gala has become a transformational fundraising event for the LHSON raising over $5 million.

“The COVID-19 global pandemic has highlighted the integral role nurses have in healthcare, and donor support makes it possible for so many of our students to become Baylor nurses,” said Dr. Linda Plank, Interim Dean, LHSON. “Ironically, this year the World Health Organization declared 2020 as the “Year of the Nurse and Midwife” coinciding with the 200th birthday of the founder of modern-day nursing, Florence Nightingale. We also proudly celebrated the LHSON’s 110th birthday and Baylor University’s 175th birthday during this memorable year. So, with humble reflection we recognize there are so many reasons to celebrate especially nursing students who persevere through all the many challenges to obtain their education. This virtual gala allowed us to show our united support of our future Baylor nurses as they exemplify our school motto, Learn.Lead.Serve.®.” The virtual gala included pre-show entertainment for online guests starting at 6:30 p.m. with videos of thanks from current LHSON nursing students as well as live auction bidding instructions. Launching into the 9th annual Going for the Gold Virtual Gala at 7 p.m., Mary Ann Hill, Gala Chair, served as Master of Ceremonies. The streaming video offered remarks from Texas Governor Greg Abbott along with other special guests including: Dr. Linda A. Livingstone, President of Baylor University; Coach Kim Mulkey; Derek Haas, TV and Film Writer; and Noah Galloway, Author and

Veteran, plus Laura Cordova, LHSON grad. The final portion of the virtual gala included a live auction with professional auctioneer, Wes Pool from Murad Auctions. The virtual gala included a silent and live auction as well as Fund-the-Need giving opportunities. Support from sponsors, underwriters and volunteers remains crucial every year. Special thanks to all those who helped us transition this year from the postponed in-person gala in April to a virtual gala in November including: Mary Ann Hill, Gala event chair, 83 volunteers of the Gala Task Force Committee, 37 members of the Dean’s Board of Advocates and 47 Gala Student Ambassadors. Past Going for the Gold Galas have featured champion athletes and celebrities such as: Sean Lee, #50 Dallas Cowboys linebacker and his wife Megan Lee (2019 gala); Former First Lady of the United States, Laura Bush, and Dr. Linda Livingstone, President of Baylor University (2018 gala); Derek Haas, co-creator and executive producer of NBC’s hit television series Chicago Fire, Chicago PD, Chicago Med and Chicago Justice (2017 gala); Noah Galloway, a wounded Operation Iraqi Freedom U.S. Army war veteran hero and finalist on the TV program, “Dancing with the Stars” along with Terrance Williams, Dallas Cowboys Wide Receiver (2016 gala); Heisman Trophy winner and NFL Quarterback Robert Griffin III (RGIII) and former Baylor linebacker and NFL Hall of Famer, Mike Singletary (2015 gala); America’s gold medal legend Mary Lou Retton (2014 gala); former Dallas Cowboys running back Emmitt Smith (2013 gala) and Baylor’s championship-winning women’s basketball coach Kim Mulkey who joined former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman (2012 inaugural gala).

very day I thank the Lord that He has given me this wonderful opportunity to work at Baylor University to raise much needed funds for the students at the Louise Herrington School of Nursing. I have been with Baylor University Development for 25 years. I started working in the Dallas Baylor University Development office in 1995. When Dr. John Lilley was the President of Baylor University, he changed the focus of development at Baylor and assigned a development officer to each school at the University. I was blessed to be assigned to the nursing school to help raise money for their needs. That was in 2006 and for the past fourteen years this school has been a true blessing to me. When I look back, this is probably not the job that I thought I would be doing. Asking for money is something that was probably not ever on my radar screen in my earlier years, but after 25 years with Baylor University and meeting the students that make up Baylor, it is not just a job, but a PASSION! When I hear the needs of our nursing school students, it is so easy for me to visit with people about why they should consider starting a scholarship, give to the simulation lab, or give to other

funds that will impact the school. Every dollar that is given truly makes a difference. What a gift it is to work with faculty and staff who truly act like family to each other. We have amazing donors that love Baylor and are part of the nursing school family and continue to make a difference for our Baylor students. They are wonderful donors but they become true friends too! I am blessed to have this wonderful nursing school family and doubly blessed to have my great family at home. Bill and I have lived in the small town of Combine, Texas for 35 years which was a wonderful place to bring up our two boys. Our boys, Kelly, and Kyle both graduated from Baylor University. Both of them are living their lifelong dreams of being firefighters for the Dallas Fire Department. I also have two amazing daughters-in-law, Lauren, and Rachael (also a Baylor graduate) and six beautiful grandchildren, Peyton (21), Kennedy (13), Kenzie (10), Luke (9), Raylee Kay (5), and Russell (2). I thank the Lord daily for the blessings he has given me through my family, friends, and Baylor.

In this time of uncertainty, there’s a fundamental truth that gives us hope - together we can do extraordinary things. Together we can light the way for current and future Baylor Bears. On #GivingTuesday, December 1, 2020, contributions were made toward the Louise Herrington School of Nursing to support excellence in teaching and learning, enhance research and discovery, and foster scholarship and academic success.

On Thursday, September 17, 2020, Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing (LHSON) participated for the eighth consecutive year in the Communities Foundation of Texas’ 12th annual North Texas Giving Day. Together, 106,000 givers raised more than $58.8 million for over 3,200 community nonprofits in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex and across North Texas. LHSON’s sustaining generosity proudly helped to raise over $51,244 from 147 donors. Remarkably, despite COVID-19 challenges, LHSON virtual North Texas Giving Day proved to be our best year in fundraising since 2014. “We are so appreciative for all the incredible donors who gave during this one-day, online giving day and those that inspired increased support through giving challenges,” said Dr. Linda Plank, Interim Dean, LHSON. “Each gift, no matter the size, makes such a big difference to our nursing students who strive to follow their calling and exemplify our school mission, Learn.Lead.Serve.”

LEARN. LEAD. SERVE.

Hattie Brantley: Former Army Nurse & Prisoner of War and a Baylor Alumna ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED NOVEMBER 9, 2017 REPRINT PERMISSION GRANTED DECEMBER 2020 BY BU MARKETING COMMUNICATIONS

G

rowing up working alongside her brothers on her family’s farm near Jefferson, Texas, young Hattie Brantley knew she really wanted to be a nurse, even as a child. As she told the Dallas Morning News before her passing in 2006, she “desperately wanted to avoid an expected, almost inevitable future of marriage to a barefoot boy in overalls from some neighboring farm, chores from dawn to twilight and a new baby every year or so.”

That desire to break the mold led Brantley to Baylor’s nursing school, where she earned her degree in just three years. After graduating in 1937, Brantley promptly joined the U.S. Army as a nurse so she could see the world. It was exciting and new and nothing like her family’s farm — but much changed on Dec. 7, 1941, after Japanese forces attacked Pearl Harbor. Brantley was stationed in Corregidor, a small island in the Philippines, which the Japanese overtook on May 6, 1942. Brantley and 77 other nurses were taken as prisoners of war. For almost three years, Brantley was kept at a university-turned-prison-camp, where she and fellow nurses cared for more than 4,000 other prisoners — who “died like flies,” she said. Malaria and dengue fever were rampant, yet nearly impossible to cure due to limited resources. Bombs fell nearby as Brantley cared for hideously wounded men in makeshift wards beneath the jungle trees. As prisoners, they could receive no mail from home. They lined up twice a day to be counted. If they met a Japanese native on the campgrounds, they had to bow. Their daily

diet was limited to 700 calories and consisted of cornmeal gruel, watery coconut milk, fish heads and horse meat. By the end of the three years, each prisoner-nurse had lost about 30% of her body weight. Brantley never saw for herself instances of brutality or torture, she told the Shreveport Times back in 1988, but she was very much aware of it happening. One of her most vivid recollections, for example, was a smuggling ring she and the other nurses had with local Filipino people. “We made a rope ladder at night, the Philippines [sic] would bring supplies to us.” But one day, Japanese soldiers came into the hospital and nurses’ quarters to search for a radio. “They found the rope ladder under my bed. I was scared to death. I just knew they would behead me. They just passed it by. I guess they did not realize what it was.” Finally, one day a U.S. plane flew over the compound, dropping a confetti burst of leaflets. Brantley grabbed one and hid it from the guards in a can of foot powder. On the flyer were just four words: “Hold on. We’re coming.”

25

On Feb. 3, 1945 — two years, 10 months and 27 days after being captured as a prisoner of war — U.S. soldiers liberated the captives. “Are there any Americans here?” they shouted. “Yeah,” Brantley responded. “Where’ve you been?” After finally returning back home, Brantley took just 90 days’ leave before returning to work — to nursing. She rose in rank to become Lt. Col. Hattie Brantley, and in 1988 accepted a newly authorized medal awarded to those who were prisoners in WWII, Korea and Vietnam. She was one of about 100 nurses christened the “Angels of Bataan” for the care they gave American soldiers during the months before the Philippines fell to the Japanese Imperial Army — and she was the very last one to leave the service. Today, there is an endowed scholarship at the LHSON in H.R. Brantley’s name. Sic ’em, Lt. Col. Brantley!

SERVING THE COMMUNITY IN NEED Featured in the photo are LHSON students from Dr. Elesha Roberts and Professor Griselle Estrada’s clinical groups who hosted a fall 2020 donation project called “Sic’em With Suds.” The project was organized by the LHSON Ethnic Minority Student Nurses Organization. Blessing of theHands During LHSON’s Pinning & Recognition Ceremony prior to the graduation ceremony at Baylor University in Waco, nursing school chaplain, Dr. Sahr Mbriwa, reads the “Blessing of the Hands” as students extend both hands, palms up. This special message represents the blessing of our nurses to be the hands of Jesus to bring comfort and healing to those they care for, and a dedication to a ministry of caring.

May your hands be strengthened for the tasks that lie ahead. May your feet keep in step with the Spirit of God as He helps you to lead and serve others well. May the legacy that you leave in your work and relationships be marked by faith, hope, and love. In the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. One God, life everlasting. Amen.

Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, and Self-Control. These are May 2021 Trad BSN the fruits of the Spirit from Galatians 5 that I set Graduating Class President to memory as a young kid because I wanted these SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT to be the attributes I embodied. Little did I know, Scholarship Recipient 2019-2020 God was molding and teaching me to become a Patricia Ann Hooper Scholarship good nurse for His glory! Upon my senior year in high school, I had no idea what I wanted to do as a career, so my family and I kept praying that God would reveal the path He prepared. God led me to discover and apply to Baylor University and upon my acceptance, led me to learn about the nursing program. The wonderful staff guided me through the entire 4-year process, the knowledgeable professors taught me so many valuable lessons, and all the loving people I met on this journey changed my life. All of this would not have been possible without the generous donors that gave me the chance to experience and gain such a great education so that I may be a successful nurse. The scholarships I have been graciously given are an example of the selflessness I wish to emulate—to give from a grateful heart without expecting anything in return. I am endlessly thankful for the blessings that God bestowed upon me through the kind people who gave out of their abundance.
