3 2019-2020 LHSON DEAN’S BOARD
Reflecting back over the nearly nine years since I joined the BU LHSON, so much has happened throughout the journey. Some of the highlights have included: eight Going for the Gold Galas, a new building, tremendous (68%) growth in enrollment in all degree programs, our faculty almost doubling in size, successful accreditation visits and our ranking in the top 50 nursing schools in the U.S. News & World Report. We have launched our low residency online graduate programs and have already grown the enrollment 178% in our graduate programs. Plus, the percentage of doctorally-prepared faculty has doubled, research and scholarship are blossoming, Kelly Rossler received our first NIH award and we introduced our new LHSON Strategic Plan for 2019-2024. When we marshalled in our 2019-2020 academic year, we welcomed 110 level one students and we had 89 FastBacc® students. Our graduate programs included 18 MSN students, 168 online DNP students in NNP, FNP and NM tracks plus, 86 students in our DNP U.S. Army Anesthesia Nursing program. The 2019 fall also marked the start of our new online DNP Executive Nurse Leadership track. Plus, we announced an online DNP Pediatric Nurse Practitioner track for fall 2020 and online Accelerated BSN. In honor of the founder of nursing, Florence Nightingale’s 200th birthday, the World Health Organization declared 2020 the “International Year of the Nurse and Midwife.” This fitting tribute to nursing also coincided with the celebration of LHSON’s 110th birthday and Baylor University’s 175th birthday. Celebrating these important milestones included proud moments such as being listed in U.S. News & World Report’s (USNWR) 2021 Best Graduate Schools. LHSON’s Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program which includes programs in anesthesia nursing, executive nurse leadership, family nurse practitioner, neonatal nurse practitioner, nurse-midwifery and pediatric nurse practitioner – ranked No. 59 nationally. In the specialty rankings, LHSON’s U.S. Army Graduate Program in Anesthesia Nursing, ranked No. 8 nationally, while Baylor’s nurse-midwifery program ranked at No. 21 in the nation. USNWR’s 2020 Best Online Programs ranked LHSON’s Master of Science in Nursing Leadership and Innovation in the top 25% nationally, moving up to No. 41 and ranked No. 8 nationally among the Best Master’s in Nursing Administration Programs. Overall, we were honored to be among so many distinguished nursing programs throughout the country as we forge through unprecedented moments in history. Notably during the spring of 2020, we were all confronted with the life-altering COVID-19 pandemic crisis. Healthcare workers, including our wonderful nurses, became critical heroes on the front lines in fighting the pandemic. More than ever before we all appreciate that nurses are called to serve and to care for the physical, social, psychological/emotional and spiritual needs of their patients. I am grateful to our staff and faculty at the LHSON who quickly transitioned our undergraduate programs online so our students could continue their education. Our graduate programs, while leading the way in online delivery, faced the closure of clinical practice sites and cancellation of intensive immersion experiences. I also appreciate the generosity from alums, donors and friends of the LHSON who offered prayers and support. We applaud the incredible work of all nurses across the globe and our belief here at the LHSON that each new nurse makes the world a better place. Continuing our forward momentum, we strive to build on our remarkable legacy and commitment of academic excellence. Through impactful research and scholarship we are giving light to new possibilities in nursing and other significant areas as we continue to Learn.Lead. Serve.

HISTORY
Baylor University is a private Christian university and a nationally ranked research institution whose mission is to educate men and women for worldwide leadership and service by integrating academic excellence and Christian commitment within a caring community. Chartered in 1845 by the Republic of Texas through the efforts of Baptist pioneers, Baylor is the oldest continually operating university in Texas. The first Baccalaureate degrees were granted in 1952 establishing the school among the earliest baccalaureate nursing programs in Texas. In 1999, the School was renamed the Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing after Louise Herrington Ornelas, a 1992 Baylor Alumna Honoris Causa, who made an endowment gift to the school. LHSON offers Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degrees through a Traditional program, FastBacc® (one year accelerated) and Distance Accelerated BSN. ACADEMIC STRATEGIC PLAN Pro Futuris – Baylor University’s Vision In May, 2014, the Baylor University Board of Regents adopted a broad-ranging array of Five-Year Goals for 2014-2018. Constructed around five high-level Aspirational Statements that represented the university’s future course, these Five-Year Goals were a natural outgrowth of the university’s continuing implementation of Pro Futuris. As a part of a longtime Baylor family, I understand the significance and importance of the Louise Herrington Baylor School of Nursing. It has meant much to the quality of health care in Texas and the Southwest region for more than 100 years. I knew Louise Herrington Ornelas as a friend across the decades and appreciated her generosity to LHSON. It was a privilege to attend Baylor University during Judge Abner McCall’s tenure as president. His vision for Baylor’s growth from 1961 to 1981 laid the foundation for where Baylor is today. Mary Wilson McCall was a gracious and talented First Lady for Baylor and her family continues to serve Baylor.

Planned giving through endowed scholarships impacts both current and future generations. It truly is the “gift that keeps on giving!” As Judge McCall often said, “it is incumbent on every friend of Baylor to do their part in ensuring the future of our great University.” Together, what each friend of Baylor does, when added together - has a mighty impact . . . Dr. Edwards has nine endowed scholarships at Baylor and additional endowed scholarships at other institutions of higher education in Texas. He owns and operates commercial real estate properties in Texas and Louisiana and was honored with the W. R. White Meritorious Service Award from Baylor in 2009. He has served as chair for the Baylor Libraries board three times and is a 1976 graduate of the Hankamer School of Business with a BBA degree.

Funded Projects National Institutes of Health – Dr. Kelly Rossler, PI Dr. Rossler and Dr. Ganesh Sankaranarayanan, Assistant Director, Center for Evidence Based Simulation, Baylor Scott & White Health, received funding from the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering of the National Institutes of Health. Their study titled Validation of an Immersive Virtual Reality Based Experiential Learning Simulator to Improve Medical Administration Safety Skills of Registered Nurses will address the critical and unresolved nationwide problem of medication errors. Drs. Rossler and Sankaranarayanan will develop an immersive virtual reality simulator and examine outcomes when Registered Nurses use the simulator for training in safe medication administration practices. USAID/ASHA – Dr. Shelby Garner, PD The U.S. Agency for International Development’s Office of American Schools and Hospitals Abroad (USAID/ASHA) awarded Baylor University and Bangalore Baptist Hospital (BBH) a $525,693 award to construct a Living and Learning Center with Smart Classrooms for students enrolled in the hospital’s nursing institute for higher education. The aim of the project is to promote public diplomacy and catalyze collaboration between citizens of the US and citizens of India by empowering women to promote gender equality through building nurse and organizational capacity and sustainability at BBH to improve health outcomes in Bengaluru and surrounding communities. Hillcrest Foundation – Linda Plank, PD The Hillcrest Foundation, Bank of America, N.A., Co-Trustee awarded Baylor University Louise Herrington School of nursing a $200,000 grant for its project titled, Enhancing Realism to Promote Knowledge Transfer from Nursing Skills Lab to the Bedside which will allow the school to update its Professional Nursing Practice Skills Lab with the purchase of replacement hospital beds and simulated manikins. Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing received an award of $172,162 from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board as part of the Professional Nursing Shortage Reduction Program for fiscal year 2021.

LHSON congratulates Dr. Robin Caldwell with the 2019 Daisy Award for Extraordinary Nursing Faculty and Mary Moon (in 2019) and Erial Cromie and Laura Cordova (in 2020) with Outstanding Nursing Student. LHSON Faculty Member Supports Honor Flight DFW On September 20, 2019, Dr. Beth Hultquist participated in Honor Flight DFW. The program takes WWII, Korea, and Vietnam veterans to Washington DC to visit the DC memorials and be honored in our nations’ capital. As part of the experience the Veterans are surprised on the return trip with “Mail Call.” Family and friends write thank you notes given to the Veterans on the plane. Baylor Student Nurses Association (BSNA) supported a letter writing campaign for this trip. Recognized by TexasAIM Congratulations to Dr. Renee’ Jones for receiving a certificate of appreciation from the Texas AIM Obstetrics Hemorrhage Faculty and the Texas Department of State Health Services. Dr. Jones was recognized for her commitment to improving maternal health and safety. She was listed as a reference to the article, Quantitative Assessment of Obstetric Blood Loss in Obstetric Hemorrhage Bundles, featured in the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists December 2019 publication, ACOG Committee Opinion.
International Work Continues With India BU LHSON hosted four scholars in fall 2019 from Bangalore Baptist Hospital in India for the three weeks. The visit was funded by the U.S. India Education Foundation 21st Century Knowledge Initiative Grant #USIEF. The scholars collaborated with LHSON faculty on a mobile health research project and learned about healthcare simulation from LHSON simulation experts. Global Nurse-Led Hypertension Interventions In late fall 2019, LHSON shared a new faculty spotlight video on the research of Dr. Lori Spies, PhD, RN, NP-C, Assistant Professor, Fulbright Scholar and Missions Coordinator. Her research focuses on building capacity in nurses and other health care providers to address the priority population health issues associated with non-communicable diseases. Community Interaction Partnership LHSON appreciates the work of Dr. Renee Flippo who teaches the Dallas Independent School District 2nd year new school nurses pediatric physical assessment course. The school nurses come to LHSON once a month, from October to March, and Dr. Flippo lectures for the first two hours followed by practicing their new skills in the lab. At the end of the course they take a final skills check-off. Fond Farewell to Dr. Tanya Sudia In December 2019, LHSON recognized Dr. Tanya Sudia, Associate Dean for Research and Scholarship for five years of service to Baylor University. In January 2020, Dr. Sudia began a new opportunity in Georgia as Dean of the College of Nursing at Augusta University. LHSON wishes her all the best.
Leadership in Nursing Dr. Beth Hultquist was selected by Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing to participate
in the 2020 cohort of the Experienced Academic Leadership Academy for nurses. Dr. Lori Spies was named the 2019-2021 International Council of Nurses: Advanced Practice Nursing
Network. (ICN APNN), Practice Committee – Chair. Dr. Melissa Neathery was selected as Co-Chair of the American Psychiatric Nurses Association’s Prelicensure Education Committee. In this role, she will work with educators across the country to develop resources and research topics pertinent to educating nursing students about psychiatric mental health nursing. Dr. Neathery will also be serving as a steering committee member on the APNA Education Council. Dr. Lyn Prater was named among the 2019-2020 Baylor Fellows. According to Baylor University, “the
honor reflects excellence in teaching and desire to transform student thinking through innovation.” Dr. Robin Caldwell was appointed to the Texas Nurses Association (TNA) House of Delegates for District 4 and attended the House of Delegates Meeting in Georgetown on June 8, 2019.

MILESTONE MOMENTS NIH Grant Awarded Baylor University’s Louise Herrington School of Nursing received funding from the National Institutes of Health’s (NIH) National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering. Co-Leading the research study is Dr. Kelly Rossler, Ph.D, RN, CHSE, Assistant Professor and INACSL Research Fellow, LHSON, and Dr. Ganesh Sankaranarayanan, Assistant Director, Center for Evidence Based Simulation, Baylor Scott & White Health. Their study titled, Validation of an Immersive Virtual Reality Based Experiential Learning Simulator to Improve Medical Administration Safety Skills of Registered Nurses will address the critical and unresolved nationwide problem of medication errors which accounts for up to $46 million in daily loss to hospital operational budgets in the United States. Outdoor Sculpture Garden Nestled in a live oak tree grove on the front north side of the Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing Academic Building, is a new outdoor sculpture garden. The peaceful area includes a bench and two life-size bronze bear sculptures generously donated by Laurie Kim Johnson Nielsen and Mark A. Nielsen. The thought-provoking bear monuments represent “Repentance” and “Redemption” and were designed by Walt Horton. North Texas Giving Day and North Texas Giving Tuesday On Thursday, September 19, 2019, Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing (LHSON) participated for the seventh consecutive year in Communities Foundation of Texas’ 11th Annual North Texas Giving Day. Thanks to the sustaining generosity of 190 donors during this action-packed, one-day online giving day, the LHSON raised $42,434, surpassing what it raised each year in 2018, 2017 and 2016. #NTXGivingTuesdayNow was celebrated on May 5, 2020 during the pandemic. LHSON donations helped Baylor nurses to follow their calling to Learn.Lead.Serve. Baylor University also encouraged donors to support the President’s Excellence Fund, supporting Baylor students in need during COVID-19. FastBacc® Program Celebrates 10 Years LHSON congratulates the 10th anniversary of its FastBacc® program. The cohort size has grown from 16 in the initial cohort to 89 students in the current 2019-2020 cohort. The program is a rigorous, intensive 12-month program that combines traditional classroom learning, online courses, clinical and lab experiences, and hybrid interactive learning courses. Students who complete the FastBacc® program are qualified to apply to the Board of Nursing to take the NCLEX licensure exam. Starting in fall 2020 we will also offer a new distance FastBacc® program for students in rural Texas. LHSON Donates PPE to BUMC-Dallas During the COVID-19 crisis, as Dallas county’s Shelter-In-Place order became a reality on March 23, 2020 LHSON transitioned all classes online and donated its remaining personal protective equipment (PPE) to Baylor Scott & White Health (BSWH), Baylor University Medical Center (BUMC) in Dallas. To ease the shortage of these vital supplies, LHSON’s Clinical Simulation Director, Jeanne Carey, coordinated with BUMC’s Director of Supply Chain Management, Sean Kester, to pick-up the following items from the LHSON: 2,000+ masks, 9,000 gloves, 200 isolation gowns and 24 canisters of hand foam.
Virtual Pinning & Recognition Ceremony In the spirit of commemorating the success of our 2020 graduates and complying with social distancing guidelines in Texas due to COVID-19, Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing LHSON offered some creative ways to celebrate nursing grads and their milestone achievement. Providing a memorable keepsake, LHSON posted a virtual Pinning & Recognition Ceremony on YouTube. The 53-minute celebration video included remarks from Dean Shelley F. Conroy, student award announcements, Student Class President addresses for the BSN and FastBacc cohorts and a voiceover reading the names of each graduate as a slide appeared with their name, photo and a heartfelt message. Due to the postponement of events, students were given the opportunity to pick up their nursing school pins and cords in person on May 13-14, 2020 as they drove through the half circle drive at the LHSON or students could get out and take them off the table. Happy Birthday Baylor University! Baylor University celebrated its 175th birthday in 2020! Joining in on the milestone moment, the LHSON celebrated on February 18, 2020 with Dr Pepper floats and festive green and gold cupcakes for everyone. In special recognition, Baylor also hosted Giving Day on February 12. The fundraising effort raised over $878,000 from more than 2,700 donors in 24 hours. Happy Birthday LHSON! On October 14, 2019 the Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing celebrated its 110th birthday! The LHSON was established in 1909 as a diploma program within Baylor Hospital in Dallas, which is now Baylor Scott and White Health’s Baylor University Medical Center and in 1950 became one of the six degree-granting schools of Baylor University. The first Baccalaureate degrees were granted in 1952 establishing the school among the earliest baccalaureate nursing programs in Texas. In 1999, the School was renamed the Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing after Louise Herrington Ornelas, a 1992 Baylor Alumna Honoris Causa, who made an endowment gift to the school. Congratulations! Give Light – To Discover On September 14, 2019, Baylor University hosted a Give Light event at The Statler Dallas. LHSON was proud to be included with a simulator demonstration and Professor Carey participated in the panel interview with Dr. Livingstone. Plus, some of our LHSON Gala Taskforce volunteers served as greeters along with our nursing students.

Supporting “Impact Ndola” in Africa LHSON traveled to Ndola, Zambia on a mission trip in summer 2019. The team provided health checkups and education through “Impact Ndola” sponsored by Northrise University. They visited three schools for vulnerable children: ALMS, MacKenzie, and Mapalo.

Complementary Therapies in Traditional Chinese Medicine LHSON students and faculty participated in a 12-day Study Abroad in Hong Kong in June 2019 focusing on Complementary Therapies in Traditional Chinese Medicine. The trip included a week at the Chinese University of Hong Kong School of Traditional Chinese Medicine and the Nethersole School of Nursing. Students also had the opportunity to visit several Chinese medicine hospitals, participate in workshops, learn from experts, plus enjoy a few days of cultural immersion.

International Council of Nurses Congress 2019 in Singapore Drs. Lyn Prater and Shelby Garner presented at the International Council of Nurses Congress 2019 in Singapore. Their presentations focused on their research in India to improve IV safety using simulation and to improve hypertension outcomes using mobile health technologies.

Study Abroad Group from the Chinese University of Hong Kong From Nov. 10-23, 2019 LHSON hosted 20 nursing students who are in their final year of studies as part of a Study Abroad group from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. The students had the opportunity to visit various classes, observe clinical rotations, attend labs, and tour hospitals. They were hosted by our faculty, staff, and students on various cultural outings and tried a wide variety of cuisines. They also had the opportunity cheer the Baylor Men’s Basketball team on to victory. LHSON Meeting with Vietnamese Ambassador On November 25, 2019 Dean Conroy, Dr. Renee Jones and Dr. Dora Bradley were invited to meet with the Vietnamese Ambassador, Ha Kim Ngoc and the Consul General from Houston, Mr. Luong Quoc Huy, to discuss LHSON’s partnership with Nan Dinh National Nursing University and the National Pediatric Hospital

I knew that I had always had a calling to serve and to love others the way Jesus had fiercely and unconditionally loved me. Graduating from Texas A&M University with a degree in Psychology, I had every intention to pursue a career in Social Work to advocate for those in Child Protective Services and foster care. However, after graduation I decided to drop everything and move to Haiti for two years with Life Teen Missions. It was there I felt the calling to become a nurse so one day I could go back and provide Haitians and those in third world countries with basic healthcare resources and empower them with health education so they can help their country as well. I wanted to attend Baylor not only because it is a prestigious nursing school but because it teaches nursing students to be holistic in their practice-serving patients’ body, mind, and spirit. The Lord used scholarships as a way to show me that He is in control of providing for the path He has called me, and I only need to trust and say “yes” along the way. I am so thankful for those who have generously given from their abundance to invest in my career, my future patients, and my family.
