LEARN. LEAD. SERVE.

I was fully vaccinated with a Covid booster, masks in hand and made my plans. When I arrived on that hot September afternoon, the first thing I did was to walk over to the school from my hotel. I had not seen the newer Harry Bass classroom building.

On Reunion Day, I was stunned to see the beautiful facility – now headquarters for the school. It was amazing to recognize so many people, both from my class and the class of 1970 (even my sorority big sister, Diana Deteau) and enjoyed happy encounters. Written by Jo Willoughby Terry, (BSN 1971)

s a high school senior, it was my dream to attend a Baptist school and when I knew that I wanted to major in nursing that started my search for a baccalaureate program. An only child, my parents had always planned for me to go to college, but never dreamed that I would think about going halfway across the country to Texas! Baylor was the mecca of Baptist schools! I remember getting the acceptance letter when I came home from school and crying on the phone when my dad called from his office. My experience at Baylor – both on the Waco campus and in Dallas – rewarded me with not only a good education in a Christian environment, but with lifelong friendships. During my two years in Dallas at the Louise Herrington School of Nursing, I worked at the hospital on the weekends not only to get experience but to help with living expenses. I attended the School’s Gala several years ago with friends and was impressed with the amount of community support that had grown. Coming for the 50th reunion of my 1971 classmates was not to be missed. Another classmate, Judy Pitman, and I had worked tirelessly for months, coordinating with Ellen Byrd to find our colleagues. We researched, wrote, called, set up a Facebook group – you name it! We left no stones unturned. We were successful in finding all but two of our 63 living classmates.

The reunion program was inspiring. Hearing the history of the school by the Dean, I was impressed with how far the school has come. It was my honor to give the invocation that day and I think the preparation for that helped me as I reflected on the value of my Baylor experience throughout my life. Hearing the student presentation and how the scholarship program made it possible for her to go to school was heart stirring. My parents were able to pay for my education and my husband and I have been able to pay for our children’s education. I knew that Bill would want to join me in establishing a scholarship so we could help other deserving young people achieve their dream of becoming a nurse. And so, I spoke to Janis Kovar and she shared more about the scholarship opportunities. When I got home to Knoxville, I told Bill and he heartily agreed that we would make this commitment. Our middle daughter, Elizabeth Terry Clements, attended Baylor 2001-2005 so she also appreciates the value of a Baylor education!

hat a difference a year makes! Fall 2021 has definitely been action-packed compared to 2020. We all seem to be moving in fast-forward and there never seems to be a week that goes by at the Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing (LHSON) without an event, celebration or special recognition. In fact, we are making plans to host our 10th annual Going for the Gold Gala on April 30, 2022 to support scholarships. Among our notable highlights, we are proud that U.S. News & World Report 2022 Best Graduate Schools rankings include several LHSON programs. Those listed are LHSON’s DNP program at No. 60 nationally and “Best Nursing” specialty rankings for LHSON’s USAGPAN, which operates at the U.S. Army Medical Center of Excellence at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, at No. 8 nationally, and Baylor’s Nurse-Midwifery program, which is No. 21 nationally. Additionally, U.S. News & World Report 2022 Best Undergraduate Nursing Programs ranked the LHSON No. 58. There have also been many great additions to our school and programs in the past year. We are happy to report a strong faculty profile that includes: 70 full-time faculty (plus over 60 part-time faculty). Our full-time faculty are made up of 5 tenured and 3 tenure-track faculty; 86% are doctorally prepared; 9 are working on doctorates; 32 DNPs; 21 PhDs; 95% are nationally certified; 36 are APRNs; 10 are women of color and four are FAANs. This dynamic team of talent is anchored by a commitment to the firm foundation upon which Baylor University and the LHSON has grown and prospered over the years.

We are also so proud of our dedicated nursing students who exemplify our school motto to Learn.Lead.Serve.® as they follow their calling to make a difference. Currently, our LHSON enrollment (as of 9/22/2021) includes: Pre-Nursing: 413; Traditional track, Bachelor of Nursing (BSN): 392; FastBacc® track (one-year accelerated): 91; Distance Accelerated BSN (DABSN): 105; Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Program online tracks: 646, Midwifery, 67; Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP), 332; Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (NNP), 64; Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (PNP), 102; Executive Nurse Leadership (ENL), 81 and a new Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner coming soon! We also have the U.S. Army Graduate Program in Anesthesia (USAGPAN): 80. It is also with a heavy heart that we remember two extremely valuable supporters of our LHSON family, Dr. Kathy Tinius and Wayne Tucker, who have both gone to be with our Lord this past summer. Kathy was in charge of the 100 Year Celebration of the LHSON in 2009, a Dean’s Board member for many years and served on the Going for the Gold Gala Taskforce for nine years. Wayne has been a Board member for over a decade and Going for the Gold Gala financial reporter for many Galas. Both Kathy and Wayne were also recipients of the LHSON Alumni Reunion, Friend of Nursing Award. We will truly miss them but know that they blessed our lives and so many others while here and we will see them again in heaven. Thank you to everyone for your prayers and support for the LHSON during the pandemic. We are so grateful to each one of you and we applaud the incredible work of nurses across the globe. In gratitude,

Dr. Linda Plank | Dean and Clinical Associate Professor

NURSING STUDENT PERSPECTIVES

The Grande Jonas Center Rio Valley for Nursing and Vaccine VeteransSummer Healthcare Awards DNP Mission Trip Jonas Nurse Leader Scholar

uring early summer 2021, the Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing (LHSON) offered a Rio Grande Valley Vaccine mission trip. Eight LHSON students participated (four undergraduate and four graduate students), as well as two faculty team leaders: Jennifer Jones, DNP, APRN, AGCNS-BC, CCRN-K, Clinical Assistant Professor and Desi Newberry, DNP, MSN-NNP, BSN, Clinical Associate Professor. Caravanning over nine hours from Dallas down to the Rio Grande, the LHSON team stayed at Melody Lane Christian Renewal Center in Palmview, Texas.

LEARN. LEAD. SERVE.

“This year because of COVID-19 we wanted to focus on our state needs related to the pandemic,” said Lori Spies, PhD APRN, FNP-C, FAANP, Associate Professor, Fulbright Scholar and Missions Coordinator, LHSON. “Our mission to the Rio Grande Valley was the only ‘in person’ mission endeavor for our nursing students this summer. Because of the pandemic, the Rio Grande Valley mission shifted its focus to COVID Intervention and our team helped provide education to the refugee population and administered COVID-19 shots in a vaccine clinic.”

LEARN. LEAD. SERVE.

“Our school has several years of history working with partners in McAllen and on the border working with local missionaries, church, and community leaders,” said Dr. Jones. “During the Rio Grande Valley mission trip we saw about 3,000 individuals come through the Catholic Charities Center from Saturday through Tuesday. Helping at the Refugee Respite Center we assisted the center volunteers with welcoming new refugees, helping to serve meals, assisted in the personal hygiene area, pharmacy, clothing area, and the students provided safe

sleep education for expectant mothers. The local church leaders and missionaries helped coordinate gatherings of church members and those living within the Colonias. We also toured the area to see the border crossings, ‘the Wall,’ and the ICE detention center as well as various local communities. This year in response to the COVID pandemic we provided vaccines with health care providers in the area.” In order to be eligible for the mission trip, LHSON students had to have completed their first semester of nursing school and provide proof of having received the COVID-19 vaccines. Nursing students were also required to complete an Independent Study on Refugee and Immigrant Health. The one credit hour course was taught by Dr. Spies and included some trip preparation and post trip reflection in addition to content that was covered during the week in the Rio Grande Valley. The purpose of the course was to increase understanding of diverse population health needs, cultural humility, and the specific health and health related needs of refugee and immigrant populations. The BU Missions provided funding to support the mission. “Continuing our ministry of Baylor’s nursing program, outreach through study and mission abroad is an important pillar of our missions at the Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing,” said Linda Plank, PhD, RN, NEA-BC, Dean, LHSON. “Emphasizing servant leadership to influence global healthcare outcomes, students are offered the opportunity to participate in missions and give back to the community with their nursing skills and spiritual heart.”

Angela Covarrubias, LHSON graduate student “I did not know what to expect from this mission trip and had no expectations,” said Angela Covarrubias, LHSON graduate student. “As a nurse practitioner (NP) practicing three hours from the border, I do have illegal immigrants as my population I care for. Surveying the humanitarian crisis myself did strengthen my viewpoint on immigration,” said Covarrubias. “Honestly, I can say the one thing I did come away with from this mission trip is my confidence in the burgeoning nurse generation. The team worked tirelessly and did so with compassion. I would let anyone of these “soon-to-be” nurses and/or NP students provide care for my family or me. I was uplifted during our time together which will help me through the push towards my DNP. This experience also helped me realize the importance of altruism and giving back as a more senior member of the nursing family. I am grateful for this opportunity and feel blessed to have been a part of helping in this humanitarian crisis with the refugees.”

Yvonne Perez, LHSON graduate student “On the last day of the mission trip, I was able to help with a COVID-19 vaccination clinic for 12 to 16-year-old children that took place in a south Texas middle school, said Yvonne Perez, LHSON graduate student. “I was fortunate to meet the APRN whose responsibility was to oversee all the nurses in the school district and coordinate the vaccination clinic. The second dose vaccination clinic was the last one scheduled for the school district,” said Perez. “According to the CDC (2021), in the United States, as of June 16, 2021, the population of 12-year-old children and older fully vaccinated surpasses 146 million people (44.1% of the population). Overall, my experience with Baylor Global Mission-RGV was a humbling experience. It truly opened my heart and mind to the problem along with the Texas-Mexico border. We are all children of God, and I hope my help changed a few families’ lives.”

Shara Ann Lo Janolo, LHSON undergraduate student “The mission provided clarity and motived me to pursue my interest in public health nursing,” said Shara Ann Lo Janolo, LHSON undergraduate student. “As a new nurse, I am hoping to start my career in the ED and eventually add public health nursing to my future endeavors. I think our society needs more nurses that would advocate for vulnerable populations and focus on prevention of diseases,” said Lo Janolo. “As an immigrant myself, I am looking forward to dedicating my career to working with vulnerable populations. I am looking forward to making a difference and give back to the community by protecting and serving refugees and immigrants. Overall, this mission exceeded my expectations regarding the great team that I was a part of and numerous patient interactions. I was blessed that our team had unity and each team member worked hard to achieve our goal of helping over 3,000 refugees and immigrants at the Respite Center. With a mix of undergraduate and graduate students, each one of us contributed unique skills and knowledge to the overall success of the mission trip.”

Telepresence Robots By Drs. Erin Killingsworth and Marie Lindley

Thanks to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board Nursing Innovation Grant Program awarded to the LHSON, two OmniLab telepresence robots were purchased for use to allow undergraduate students off-campus to participate in on-campus labs and simulation-based learning experiences. The inaugural use of the telepresence robots occurred in week 8 of the fall 2021 semester when a Level 4 student having to quarantine, was able to participate in the Transition to Practice Simulation class. The student was paired with an on-site student in the role of Nurse Baylor and was able to discuss patient prioritization with her partner, talk to the simulation patients, and cue her partner during the physical assessment. The student provided the following feedback from the experience: “This was such an incredible experience and taught me a lot about the advancements of technology in the field of medicine. There were definitely more opportunities than I was expecting where I could be involved in care. I think this telepresence scenario emphasized the importance of assessments in identifying priority care needs. In school, we have been told that we can learn so much from that initial entrance in the patient’s room. This really goes to show that we can be involved virtually in assessments but also highlights some of the limitations to virtual medicine where you are not able to touch your patient. It was a great experience and I am grateful that I was able to participate through the telepresence robot.”

Virtual Distinguished Nursing Lectureship The LHSON hosted a virtual Distinguished Nursing Lectureship on Tuesday, October 19. This year, our featured speaker was Susan B. Hassmiller, RN, Ph.D., FAAN, Senior Advisor for Nursing Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, who spoke on “Strengthening Nursing’s Capacity to Advance Health Equity: Academic & Practice Partnerships.”

The Baylor-Baylor Relationship for Nursing This past May, Baylor University and the LHSON hosted an online Lunch N’ Learn. Two distinguished healthcare leaders were featured, Dr. Karla Ramberger, Chief Nursing Officer of Baylor University Medical Center and LHSON Dean, Dr. Linda Plank. They talked about why nurses are vital to the future and what makes a “Baylor-Baylor” nurse priceless! For 112 years, the LHSON has graduated wonderful nurses who have followed their calling to be the hands and feet of Christ. Supporting this mighty effort, our neighbor BUMC has been a consistent partner. This valuable, synergistic relationship will no doubt continue.

LEARN. LEAD. SERVE.

Baylor-led Study Analyzes Impact of COVID-19 on Pediatric Advanced Practice Registered Nurses LEARN. LEAD. SERVE. By Kate Nelson, student news writer, Baylor University Media and Public Relations Reprint permission granted

P

ediatric advance practice registered nurses (APRN) are facing multifocal impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, with the most difficult challenge being mental health struggles experienced by themselves and their families, according to a new study led by Jessica Peck, DNP, clinical professor at Baylor University’s Louise Herrington School of Nursing (LHSON). The study, published in the Journal of Pediatric Health Care, examined the holistic effects of COVID-19 on pediatric-focused APRNs through a survey of 789 participants. The study shows that pediatric APRNs experienced increased burnout and mental health concerns during the COVID-19 pandemic. With its serious impact on society, COVID-19 has burdened medical professionals, which has caused delays of care within the healthcare system. Nurses throughout the healthcare system have been critically impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. A consequential impact of COVID-19 has been the alteration of pediatric care delivery. Pediatric agencies have experienced disruptions in care provisions, patient presentations, clinical practices, immunizations and revenue, according to the study. Furthermore, some pediatric nursing professionals have transitioned to working with adult populations while others have been furloughed or laid off due to a strong demand for critical care nursing services and a lower demand for primary care nurses. “While physical disease impacts on children have generally not been as dire as some historic precedents like polio, they are by no means spared,” Peck said.“Pandemic conditions have fundamentally altered the norms of pediatric care delivery and, as a profession, we share collective concerns: severe COVID in children with pre-existing conditions, life-threatening multi-system inflammatory syndrome, disturbing disparities in severity of illness and death, particularly for children of color who account for 75% of pediatric COVID-19 deaths, and free-falling immunization rates with recovery not yet in sight.” The strongest impact of COVID-19 has been on APRN’s mental health. The research shows that 34% are experiencing moderate to extreme concern for professional burnout while 25% of respondents feel anxious or nervous and another 15% are experiencing depression or hopelessness. Overall, 20% of participants reported feeling moderate to extreme concern for their mental health. “As a profession, many pediatric nursing professionals are working far more hours for far less compensation, isolated from professional

27

networks. They are learning new technologies and implementing new policies in little time with even less support. Pediatric clinics are severely disrupted,” Peck said. “Children’s hospitals received less than 1% of all federal relief monies provided to U.S. hospitals, leaving children without access to care. Faculty are exhausted and experiencing vicarious trauma hearing devastating stories from their students. All of this contributes to destabilized pediatric infrastructure, which disproportionately impacts marginalized children.” Not only has COVID-19 impacted registered nurses, but it also has had significant impact on their families. Most respondents noticed an increase in clinical presentations of child mental or behavioral health concerns (73%), isolation and limited socialization (72%) and parental anxiety (71%). One of the most alarming findings was the increase in child mental or behavioral health concerns that nurses noticed, Peck said. “This problem is multifactorial, with isolation, loss of safety net services, family stressors and trauma and deferred care and services all compounding this issue across communities worldwide,” she said. Another notable finding is that more than a third of the respondents had moderate to extreme concern over professional burnout due to rapid changes and disinformation. In addition, lessons learned during the pandemic will shape the next generation of APRNS. Peck noted three practical implications of the study: 1. Nurses are not heroes or angels and should be treated as humans with physical and mental health needs. Nurses should be supported to prioritize individual health promotion behaviors and resource access. 2. Healthcare organizations and leaders need to affirm and reinforce the value of nursing with diverse and equitable representation in decision-making forums and assurance of access to supportive resources without fear of discrimination, stigma or bias. 3. Support for public civility towards nursing professionals and public health experts is crucial, with policy support for zero tolerance of violence towards nurses. ABOUT THE STUDY The study, “Exhausted and Burned Out: COVID-19 Emerging Impacts Threaten the Health of the Pediatric Advanced Practice Registered Nurse Workforce,” is published in the Journal of Pediatric Health Care. Co-author Jessica Peck, DNP, APRN, CPNP-PC, CNE, CNL, FAANP, FAAN, is a clinical professor of nursing at Baylor University’s Louise Herrington School of Nursing. Co-author Jennifer Sonney, Ph.D., APRN, PPCNP-BC, FAANP, is an assistant professor at University of Washington School of Nursing.

New AIM Leadership Collective The Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing (LHSON) is proud to have faculty and staff participating in Baylor University’s new AIM Leadership Collective. Inspired by the BU Black Faculty and Staff Association (BFSA), AIM is anew 2021-2022 leadership development pilot program. Designed as a signature program of the BFSA, AIM will provide staple initiatives to serve Baylor. Serving on this 10-month program commitment from the LHSON is Sahr Mbriwa, Teresa Tucker and Dr. Lisa Jones. In addition, the BFSA Executive Committee serves as program content advisors, Malcolm Foley is the Executive Sponsor for the program, and members of Baylor’s HR team will provide ongoing program support. “There is already evidence that the program has positively impacted Baylor knowing that Dr. Livingstone is an alumni,” said Dr. Lisa M. Jones, Clinical Assistant Professor, LHSON. “I believe that since LHSON will have three graduates of this pilot program that it will build stronger relationships within the school and across the university knowing that there are ‘certified leaders’ who are capable of being in meetings to help make decisions for students, faculty and staff.” AIM was created to foster personal and professional development of faculty and staff of color who aspire to be leaders in the Baylor community. The inaugural cohort will work through a combination of formalized learning sessions, team and individual project work, guided mentoring and informal cohort connection groups. “It’s an opportunity to collaborate with other higher education professionals who have similar passions and interests,” said Teresa Tucker, Coordinator of Academic Success, LHSON. “I hope to be equipped to lead and support students in ways that are innovative and creative.”

FIRST FACULTY ENDOWMENT FOR NURSING SCHOOL LHSON’s FastBacc® Program Receives $1.5 million gift, Names New Faculty Professorship

B

aylor University announced in December 2021 a gift of $1.5 million from the Deerbrook Charitable Trust, of Chevy Chase, Md., and Harris and Anne Clark, of Dallas, to establish the Louise Herrington School of Nursing’s (LHSON) first endowed faculty position. The Harris and Anne Clark FastBacc® Endowed Professor will provide permanent, enduring support for the FastBacc program, a 12-month accelerated postbaccalaureate Bachelor of Science in Nursing program. LHSON Clinical Associate Professor Beth Hultquist, Ph.D., will be the inaugural holder of the Harris and Anne Clark FastBacc Endowed Professorship. Hultquist is the coordinator of the FastBacc program, a position she has held since 2014. Her leadership and consistent work have been instrumental to the growth and success of the program. “For more than 100 years, the Louise Herrington School of Nursing has held a steadfast commitment to excellence in nursing higher education, and I am grateful for the personal investment and support of Harris and Anne Clark and the trustees of the Deerbrook Charitable Trust,” said Baylor President Linda A. Livingstone, Ph.D.

“Baylor nurses are known as capable, compassionate professionals whose critical thinking and adaptability help them to succeed. Harris and Anne have long been dedicated supporters of the FastBacc program, and it is only fitting that this endowed professorship carry their name in recognition of their commitment to our Baylor nurses.” The Clark Professorship supports the Give Light campaign priority of increasing faculty endowment support among the University’s 12 schools and colleges. Since the start of the campaign, 31 endowed faculty positions have been created to recruit and retain gifted faculty to teach, mentor and advance the research priorities of the University.

The endowed professorship is not the first time the Clarks and Deerbrook Charitable Trust have supported the FastBacc program. In 2009, a gift from the Trust helped to establish the intensive, full-time program in which students who already hold a bachelor’s degree in a non-nursing discipline complete 62 hours of nursing coursework at LHSON’s Dallas campus. It is an intensive full-time program that begins each summer with a combination of teaching methodologies including traditional classroom, on-line courses, clinical and lab experiences, and hybrid interactive learning courses. The first cohort of 16 students graduated in 2010. The FastBacc program has shown significant growth in the last 10 years, with 76 students graduating in May 2021. “We are truly grateful for Harris and Anne’s incredible support of the FastBacc program and our nursing students,” said LHSON Dean Linda Plank, Ph.D. “Our Baylor nurses have been called to learn, to lead and to serve in their communities, and I am grateful for those who are helping them answer that call. The Deerbrook Charitable Trust and the Clarks are champions for our FastBacc nurses, and the faculty and students of LHSON celebrate what this gift will mean for the future growth of the program and for the men and women who will pass through its doors on their way to become exceptional nurses.” The Clark Professorship will help LHSON by providing enduring resources for the FastBacc program through research support and salary and travel funding for the chairholder. As a permanent endowment, the Clark Professorship will serve as an attractive recruiting and retainment tool for faculty for the life of the program, providing stability and security to help LHSON in growing the academic track. The Clark Professorship endowment also will create opportunities for faculty and students as resources previously tied up in funding faculty salary will now be available to fund other needs related to the program. Harris and Anne Clark previously supported the FastBacc program and LHSON through the establishment of an endowed compassion fund and several endowed scholarships. Knowing that FastBacc students have access to fewer financial assistance opportunities due to the nature of their status as degree-holding students, the Clarks created scholarships and an emergency fund to support them during their time at Baylor. Neither Harris nor Anne are alumni of Baylor University. Harris Clark earned a B.B.A. degree from Oglethorpe University in Atlanta, GA. Anne Clark graduated from Texas Tech University. Mr. Clark serves as a Trustee for the Deerbrook Charitable Trust. The Trust is a private foundation that was funded in 2006 by the late Hays Clark, father of Harris Clark. Since its inception, the Trust has been a valued partner and generous supporter of LHSON. The Clark Professorship gift supports the priorities of Baylor key academic initiatives of Illuminate, the University’s strategic plan. Created as part of the Give Light Campaign, the Clark Professorship will support the University’s Health Initiative, to grow research and collaboration in this area, spanning all schools and colleges within the University. Baylor publicly launched the Give Light campaign on Nov. 1, 2018. To date, the campaign has raised $1.0 billion. The Campaign has seen 78,103 alumni, parents and friends give to the University’s priorities, as well as establishing 623 endowed scholarships. Baylor Giving Day Results The LHSON helped celebrate Baylor Alumni Week, April 12-16. We also participated in Baylor Giving Day, on April 14, a university-wide, 24-hour fundraising event. There were many ways the Baylor Family showed their support of our students. We offered giving challenges that included: a class challenge; the Lois and Dexter Ward Scholarship Challenge for Nursing; The Stephen Ellis Student/Parent Giving Day Challenge and a Faculty/Staff Challenge. We were blessed to raise $103,000 from the generosity of more than 100 donors (which included a $50,000 pledge). Throughout the virtual Alumni Week, the LHSON was featured in a Lunch & Learn. Our segment included a brief message from Dr. Linda Plank about how LHSON’s students are supporting their community during the COVID-19 pandemic. Plus, viewers learned about the important work of our colleague Dr. Jessica Peck, who has become a leading voice in the fight against human trafficking. Finally, Janis Kovar shared closing remarks on the importance of giving.

Raises Over $28,435 on North Texas Giving Day

O

n Thursday, September 23, 2021, Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing (LHSON) participated for the ninth consecutive year in Communities Foundation of Texas’ annual North Texas Giving Day, designed to empower every person to give back to their community by supporting local nonprofits and causes. Online donations were made from 6 a.m. to midnight on North Texas Giving Day to nonprofits listed on www.NorthTexasGivingDay.org. In 2020, $58.8 million was raised through 106,000 donors benefiting over 3,200 local nonprofits, bringing the eleven-year total to over $374 million for our community. Thanks to the sustaining generosity of 148 donors during this action-packed, 18-hour, online giving day, the LHSON raised $28,435 in 2021! “What a blessing our Baylor alumni, parents and friends are to LHSON,” said Janis Kovar, Senior Director of Development, Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing. “We appreciate the generous donors especially those who inspired increased support with giving challenges. All of the gifts made that day to the LHSON were truly appreciated and together make a big difference to our nursing students.”

In the spirit of North Texas Giving Day, LHSON fueled fundraising excitement with fun activities throughout the day in the lobby of the Academic Building at 333 North Washington Avenue. The LHSON bear mascot was the center of attention for many photo ops and volunteers managed a giving table adorned with fall décor, giveaways and the convenience of multiple laptops to make online gifts. Later in the afternoon we handed out fresh popcorn. Additionally, we had giving challenges thanks to a few generous donors who offered their support to inspire a class challenge, alumni challenge, and faculty/staff challenge.

New Faculty & Staff Endowed Scholarship The LHSON established a new giving opportunity in 2021 called the LHSON Faculty and Staff Endowed Scholarship in Nursing. The goal of the fund was to reach $25,000 and it would be coupled along with the gift from the Hord Family Trust which would then double the amount available to LHSON students. Thanks in part to a large donation from the LHSON Sigma Theta Tau Eta Gamma Chapter, the nursing school met its goal! Sic ’Em Bears!

Special Thanks to Nurse Pulley The LHSON acknowledges a very special nurse, Carmen Annette Pulley who donated her entire nursing collection of 250+ items earlier this year to the LHSON. A portion of the keepsakes are in a curio cabinet in the Dean’s Suite on the 4th floor of the Academic Building and the remaining items are in a large glass display cabinet on the 2nd floor at the Clinical Simulation Building. The collection is dedicated in memory of Carmen’s parents, Rev. D.R. “Pete” Pulley and Glenn Ellen Cude Pulley. Carmen was a psychiatric nurse for over 24 years at Terrell State Hospital before she retired in August 2017. She began collecting nurse figurines and memorabilia as a hobby at the beginning of her nursing profession and continued over the years with the help of family and friends. The LHSON is honored to be the “forever home” of these special pieces and we are happy to consider Carmen part of our beloved Baylor family.

Baylor Nursing Students Help COVID-19 Vaccination Clinics I

n early 2021, Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing (LHSON) shared 120 senior level, second semester (S-2), nursing students and assigned faculty to administer the COVID-19 Moderna vaccine at vaccination clinics in Waco (McClennan County) at the Waco Convention Center and at McLane Stadium. The nursing students arrived on charter buses each week from Dallas to assist with clinics that were open every Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., January 28 through February 18. Approximately 24 LHSON nursing students and two faculty were assigned to each clinic and more than1,600 people were vaccinated daily. LHSON also assisted with vaccination clinics at Parkland Hospital in Dallas and other DFW hospitals during the pandemic. “It was extremely important that we got as many people as possible vaccinated as soon as the vaccine became available,” said Linda Plank, PhD, RN, NEA-BC, Dean, Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing. “The more people available to assist, the sooner we gain herd immunity and get past this pandemic. Also, we are so grateful for the 30+ hospital/clinics/community sites that allow our students in their doors every semester so our students can have great learning opportunities that we want and feel obligated to help those sites whenever they need help. Our students want to participate to gain more experience and because they may never again have this opportunity to see how a massive immunization clinic works.” “We participated in these clinics as a means for nursing students to use their gifts and skills to help be a solution for this global health pandemic,” said Lyn Prater, PhD,

RN, CNE, Clinical Professor, Level IV Coordinator and 2020-2021 Senior Baylor Fellow. “By partnering with the Baylor University Health Services and the City of Waco Health Department we could maximize resources and live out the mission of Baylor University: to educate men and women for worldwide leadership and service by integrating academic excellence and Christian commitment within a caring community.” LHSON nursing students who participated in the vaccination clinics were graduating senior students, level 4. They participated in this clinic as a part of their Population Health Nursing clinical course. The course is described as follows: Professional nursing practice emphasizing meeting the health needs of culturally diverse and vulnerable individuals, families, groups, and communities. Population health principles are examined and applied as students integrate the nursing process while providing culturally relevant care. Population focused nursing practice includes family health, school health, occupational health, home/hospice health, faith community health, and public health. “Our students have all been taught how to give IM injections but they may not have as many opportunities to give them in their regular clinicals,” said Dr. Plank. “By participating in an immunization clinic, they will have much experience and be confident in their skills. Our faculty have posted instructional modules to allow quick access to educational information. Our students will have firsthand experience at meeting a community need and they can add that to their resume and brag about their experience as they seek employment.”

Helping to administer the COVID-19 vaccine on February 4, 2021 in Waco, LHSON nursing student, Everly Yifei Zhao said, “I saw this as a great opportunity to apply the nursing skills I have learned and be able to serve our community. Baylor nurses carry strong values and beliefs for patient care. So, being able to immerse myself in the Baylor culture in this way helped me build an even bigger heart for nursing.” She also said, “I hope that throughout this pandemic people will have learned the importance of teamwork and the ability to work towards one goal.” “We know we have the very best students in the world,” said Dr. Plank. “We love how they care for others and how they want to help. They have experienced the pandemic since March 2020 and now they can help put the pandemic behind us. The public loved seeing the ‘sea of green scrubs’ come into the room and help those desiring the vaccine.”

T

he Fridge at the LHSON is an extension of similar services provided on the Baylor University Waco campus. The LHSON has one Fridge in the Success Center Suite of the Academic Building and another at the Clinical Simulation Center. The goal is to have both stocked regularly through donations of nursing school faculty, staff members and from Baylor friends and family. The purpose of The Fridge program is to provide a quick meal to students who need it most. Donations can be dropped off in the Success Center in Student Services. Students do not need to identify themselves in order to access The Fridge. However, we have asked that they mark our tally sheet so that we know how many students are making use of the service. This will help us better communicate with those who are donating and better plan for the future. https://blogs.baylor.edu/TheFridge/

Making an Impact

he FastBacc® cohort has the honor of interacting with a variety of populations every fall during the community clinical portion of their program. This clinical is designed to promote and preserve the health of diverse populations. Toward that aim, our students are assigned independent and assisted living communities, homeless outreach centers as well as helping with a variety of community-based needs. The current group is doing outstanding work in each of these areas! Listed below are highlights from various FastBacc clinical groups led by LHSON Clinical Instructors that include: Professors Thomison, Saunders, Murray and DeVreeze. Professor Lorie Murray’s FastBacc clinical group helped with a vaccination clinic in Arlington, “Students showed up early on a Saturday morning, educated, vaccinated, and even twirled signs to a heavily trafficked street to recruit attendance. They had great attitudes and the nurse organizer was even handing them her business card to consider for future employment in the THR system. They represented Baylor LHSON well!”

I

n September 2021 students from LHSON’s “Population Health” course volunteered at Baylor’s Faith in Action to learn more about community resources such as this organization. Faith in Action is a local Dallas non-profit that receives and processes both equipment and soft goods that can be repurposed for those in need globally. The organization is always in need of more volunteers. https://www.bswhealth.com/.../faith-in-actioninitiatives

L

HSON nursing students spent some time this fall in McKinney at The Samaritan Inn. They brought residents helpful brochures about topics including: men’s health, diabetes, blood pressure, vaccinations for both children and adults, COVID-19 vs. Flu, and much more. https://www.saminn.org/

It is a blessing this clinical is scheduled for the fall –as several communities had the opportunity to celebrate Veteran’s Day. FastBacc nursing students at Christian Care Centers in Allen took part in honoring veterans. Professor Julie Thomison said, “It has been such a blessing to watch them interact, commune & pray with them! This is such a wonderful experience for our students and I am proud to be a part of it.” Professor Kim Saunder’s FastBacc clinical group was assigned at Friends’ Place Adult Day Services in Richardson and even made their social media page thanking them for their support of veterans! Thanks in large part to the FastBacc students, members enjoyed a festive Veterans Day celebration complete with individually wrapped cookies. Professor DeVreeze’s clinical group worked at Dallas-based Austin Street Center. “From the first day we entered the “Sisterhood Group” building at Austin Street Center, our group felt an immense desire to do something meaningful for these women, who have come from all kinds of homelessness, abuse, and addiction to turn their lives around,” said Cassidy Cope, FastBacc Cohort President, LHSON. “We were immediately in awe of their courage, honesty, vulnerability and kindness. As we engaged with this group, discussing small things, big things and everything in between, nutrition was a popular topic. From comfort foods to memories around the table it became clear quite quickly that nutrition was a subject that would make an impact,” said Cope. “Collaboratively in our clinical group, we came up with the idea to create a free cookbook called “The Sisterhood Guide to Eating Well” filled with simple recipes, resources and tools to empower these women to pursue healthy eating on a budget once they are in independent housing. Food insecurity is a serious issue and navigating the resources available is confusing at times. Additionally, planning meals, budgeting and preparing those meals can be a daunting task. In the midst of a huge transition and adjusting to life independent from the support of the shelter, we wanted to help them feel prepared and confident in this small way.”

O

n Saturday, September 18, over 100 alumni gathered at the Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing Academic Building in Dallas for our annual Alumni Reunion. Although the event normally recognizes all graduates celebrating their 50th, 40th, and 30th anniversaries, this year was made doubly special as we honored not only the classes of 1971, 1981, and 1991, but also the classes of 1970, 1980, and 1990.

After the luncheon the Baylor Football game against Kansas was shown on the large screen in the Activity Room for all to watch and cheer on our Baylor Bears! Complimentary football snacks and beverages were available to enjoy as well as Baylor stadium cups and pom poms. Simultaneously, some of the alums also enjoyed touring both the Academic Building and Clinical Simulation Building led by current nursing students. In addition, we are grateful to the alums that contributed to our goal at this year’s Alumni Reunion of raising $15,000 in gifts and pledges. In fact, we are excited to announce, Jo Willoughby Terry, an LHSON alum, generously established a LHSON Scholarship Endowment Fund. Her incredible gift along with all the others are so vital to help support future generations of Baylor nurses as they Learn.Lead.Serve.®

Many of the alums came early to mingle and visit with fellow Baylor alums before the luncheon began. They also enjoyed browsing the “pop-up shops” such as, the Baylor Bookstore for keepsake goodies and Smokin’ Hot Chix, LLC offering spicy sauces, rubs and marinades. There was also an informational table to learn about the Sigma Theta Tau International Eta Gamma Chapter at the LHSON and the nursing school’s domestic and global missions efforts.

Now, more than ever, the impact of nurses is felt worldwide. LHSON is leading the way by holistically preparing and educating students in mind and spirit to fulfill their calling.

Attendees visited the nursing school campus to learn about all of the exciting happenings at LHSON, including the installment of our new Dean, Dr. Linda Plank. A Baylor graduate and long-time LHSON faculty member and administrator, Dean Plank served as Interim Dean before being selected for the role full-time earlier this year. During the Alumni Reunion luncheon, attendees enjoyed a music video, Let Them See Jesus. The video features a song written by Class of 2013 alumnae, Bekah Lemonds and Bethany Gebhard. The video was produced by generous and long-time supporters of the nursing school, Lisa Stepp, an LHSON grad and her late sister, Dr. Kathy Tinius, a Baylor alum. The video was especially touching and poignant, given Dr. Tinius’ recent passing this summer. The luncheon provided a time to commemorate the lives of Dr. Tinius and Wayne Tucker, both of whom previously received the Friend of Nursing Award. It was also our privilege to continue the tradition of honoring several outstanding individuals with awards to acknowledge their commitment and support of nursing.

NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION U.S. POSTAGE PAID BAYLOR UNIVERSITY

My first semester at the Baylor School of Nursing has already become one of the greatest experiences Fall 2021 Level 1 of my life. This program has allowed me to grow Cohort Class President closer in my faith in the Lord while gaining SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT knowledge and experience in the field of nursing. Scholarship Recipient 2020-2021 The staff, teachers, and students have all helped Dr. DM Edwards Nursing Scholarship and Achievement Gold to create a loving and close community of people Baylor Scholarship who all want to see each other succeed. Learn, Lead, Serve, is not just a motto for LHSON, but it is something that is actually practiced in the school. In this one semester, I feel as if I have already gained more knowledge as I have in my 14 previous years of schooling due to the help of the caring staff and faculty. I have also been presented with many situations to lead such as serving as my cohort’s class president. There has been no shortage of service opportunities for me as well in my time at the nursing school. Every week there is a new project or activity that can be found to help serve my fellow students or community. None of this could have been possible for me without the generous donations I have been given through scholarships. The kindness of the donors aided me in my expenses and allowed me to focus on my education and growing in the LHSON community instead of having to worry about finances. I hope to one day give back just as these donors have done for me following the selfless love that God has shown to us all! TIMI TOPE-OJO
