Riverside housing development Engineers at BSP Consulting have played a key role in a new housing development currently being built beside the River Trent at Gainsborough in Lincolnshire.

The company undertook the flood risk strategy for the scheme in Bowling Green Lane, which will create 135 new homes, including 60 apartments, on a brownfield site in the town. Experts at BSP liaised with the Environment Agency early in the planning process to discuss key flood risk issues in the Flood Zone 3 area and to negotiate an agreeable, costefficient strategy within the financial

budget of the scheme to protect prospective residents from flooding. This involved raising land to reinforce defences and lifting floor levels. BSP was also involved in drawing up designs for the levels on site, along with the drainage system.

Comprising two blocks that are part three, part five and part six storeys in height, the accommodation is a mix of studio and cluster apartments. It also features 235 cycle spaces, including e-bike charging points. The scheme was designed by CPMG Architects and is being built by contractor nmcn. It will transform a derelict site on the south side of Nottingham city centre, close to Nottingham Train Station. BSP Consulting structures director Carl Hilton said: “This is a major scheme on the edge of Nottingham city centre, which will breathe new life into this area, and BSP Consulting is proud to be involved in such a significant development that will benefit future students who come to the city.” BSP previously worked for Jensco on the award-winning One Friar Gate Square in Derby, home to the University of Derby’s School of Law and Social Sciences, and Agard Court, student housing for the University of Derby.

New engineering unit

Work has been completed on a £4.3m precision engineering facility for Slack & Parr at Kegworth in North West Leicestershire. BSP Consulting was the civil and structural engineer on the 5,300m² project, designed by Staniforth Architects, project managed by Benchmark Property and built by Warwick Burt Construction. Slack & Parr is a market leader in high precision engineering - designing and manufacturing the most advanced precision gear metering pumps, industrial dosing pumps and hydraulics flow divider solutions. BSP’s role in the new manufacturing HQ facility included design of the foundations, the concrete service yard, the car parking area and the foul and surface water drainage to connect into the wider site, where housing is being built.

Work is being carried out on site by Pure Construction for Rotherhill Developments and is due to be completed at the end of the year. BSP has undertaken the structural engineering of both the refurbishment and the new build elements of the scheme, along with civils work which included the redesign of the drainage to reduce surface water discharge rates from the site. Other members of the team include SGP Architects and Benchmark Property.

Affordable homes

Planning permission has been granted for a scheme of 32 affordable homes being built by emh group.

The development is on brownfield land at Warwick Road, Littlethorpe, which was previously the site of Blaby District Council’s Neighbourhood Services depot before it relocated to Whetstone in 2016. A mix of rented and shared ownership housing, the scheme includes 15 two-bed and 13 three-bed properties, as well as four bungalows. Tower block demolition BSP Consulting played a significant role in the demolition of a 14-storey office tower block in the centre of Coventry. The huge tower block had stood in the city centre since the 1970s, and its demolition will kickstart the £300m City Centre South regeneration in the city. Using archives and other material, engineers from BSP researched the construction and make up of Coventry Point to advise Coventry City Council on how best to safely demolish the building. Work to take the building down began in 2019 and has now been completed, with the tower block fully demolished.

BSP structures director Paul Elphick said: “More usually we’re involved in putting up buildings but it’s clearly important to know the structure and make up of a building prior to demolition, particularly one so large and in such a central location as Coventry Point. We were very pleased to see that the whole demolition process went very smoothly.” Other members of the team included Pulse, who provided employer’s agent and quantity surveying services, project manager Faithful + Gould, Ardent Consulting Engineers, and also Greenways as the M&E consultant, and demolition specialist Coleman.

New school extension Work is progressing well on a new science block being built at a Staffordshire school. Contractor G F Tomlinson is building the three-storey facility at Polesworth School, Dordon. BSP is the civil and structural engineer on the project, which is due to be completed in autumn 2021 and is being built as part of the Department for Education’s Priority Schools Building Programme. Architect is Bond Bryan.

“We are delighted to have now passed the BSI BIM Level 2 audit. It’s a stringent audit which confirms the Building Information Modelling capabilities of the BSP team and gives reassurance to our clients. This certification is particularly timely, as it’s becoming increasingly mandatory for delivery partners on a number of frameworks to
