Anniversary for Leicester office

new Birkett House SEN School in Wigston, and the HQ for Dunelm at Syston, and more recently the development of the Get Busy Living Centre near Melton Mowbray – the rehabilitation centre for those with lifechanging sporting injuries, which is being spearheaded by the Matt Hampson Foundation, the charity set up by former England Under-21 and Leicester Tigers player Matt Hampson, paralysed in a rugby accident.

BSP is celebrating a decade in Leicester and marking ten years since opening an office in De Montfort Street – the third office in the group.

“During our decade in Leicester we have increased the range of services we offer from this office to include pre-planning support and traffic and transportation engineering, and this has been one of the reasons behind the expansion of the team,” said Paul Elphick, BSP Consulting director, who manages the Leicester office and has been there since it launched. “However, as our reputation has grown, so has the number of engineers and technicians we have employed in Leicester and we currently have a team of 15 based in our city office, working across the city, county and beyond.” During the past decade, BSP has provided civil and structural engineering services for key projects in Leicester and Leicestershire, including Makers’ Yard in Leicester’s Creative Quarter, buildings at Brooksby Melton College, refurbishment schemes at Loughborough University, the

Emergency services scheme Work has been completed on a £10 million joint training centre for the emergency services in Derbyshire.

BSP undertook a number of civil, structural and traffic and transport engineering roles on the scheme for Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service and Derbyshire Constabulary. Built at the site of the constabulary’s headquarters in Ripley, the premises include a new two-storey training building with an attached three double-bay vehicle garage and

associated training buildings for Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service, along with fire behaviour simulation training facilities, training towers and search and rescue facilities. A new training building for Derbyshire Constabulary has also been completed on the site. The facilities were built by Bowmer and Kirkland, with other members of the team including Focus Consultants and M&E contractor Neville Tucker.

focus on.... Health Medical scheme handed over

A three-storey building to create a new medical centre, public library and pharmacy in Woodseats, Sheffield, has been completed. BSP was the civil and structural engineer for the £2.25 million project, which involved the demolition of a library and the development of new library facilities, as well as new premises for Woodseats Medical Centre. Engineers at BSP drafted the scheme using BIM (Building Information Modelling).

Extension project

BSP engineers are involved in a scheme to extend Castle Donington Surgery – the second extension that the company has been involved in at the premises in Borough Street. The latest extension to the health centre, which also includes a pharmacy, will create an administration office and two new consulting rooms. BSP is the civil and structural engineer for the two-storey addition, designed by architects Allan Joyce. Work is expected to start on site early in 2018.

New medical centre

GP and health facilities are being built as part of a new multi-use development in Cotgrave, Nottinghamshire. The site is close to the town centre refurbishment scheme that is being undertaken by Rushcliffe Borough Council and BSP are also involved with. BSP is the civil and structural engineer for the surgery scheme which is designed by architect West Hart Partnership and being built by Main Contractor BKBS. Work has started on site for the project, which also includes a new library and a council contact point, and is part of a wider regeneration of the town centre.

Hospital improvements Structural engineering and temporary works advice is currently being provided by BSP Consulting for Lincoln-based contractor R G Carter during general improvement work being undertaken at Grantham and District Hospital. The work commenced in Autumn 2017 and is expected to be ongoing during 2018.

Leicestershire health centre

Work is well underway on Husbands Bosworth Medical Centre – a new build project where BSP is civil and structural engineer. The one-storey building in Welford Road is being built by Pure Construction in association with BSP, architects BRP, and Benchmark Property. It is due to be completed in early 2018.

Hospital scheme

BSP is structural and civil engineer for the new Cygnet Hospital Maidstone, which is expected to be completed in Summer 2018. The two/ three-storey mental health facility is being built with a braced steel frame primary structure on a split-level site.

Trio of promotions

Three members of the BSP team have been promoted to new positions. Chartered civil engineer Carol Ell and chartered structural engineer Monika Anszperger have become associates, while associate Tim Wilson has stepped up to associate director. Carol, who works in BSP’s Leicester office, joined the company in July 2004, while Monika, who is based in the Derby office, joined in January 2014. Tim, who has been with BSP since 2005, heads up the civil engineering team in Leicester. BSP MD David Sumner said: “These changes reflect the much-increased responsibility levels that Tim, Carol and Monika now embrace and perform for the company. I and the BSP team congratulate them on their achievement.”

Cyber security accreditation BSP Consulting has gained the Cyber Essentials Plus accreditation – giving clients and customers extra reassurance about the company’s cyber and digital credentials.

Cyber Essentials is a government-backed scheme that helps to protect organisations against a whole range of the most common cyber attacks. BSP was awarded the accreditation following independent verification of the firm’s cyber security.

North Lincolnshire Council opposed the outline plans to demolish a house and build new homes, along with the formation of public open space, at the 6.8hectare site on land off North Street, Winterton, near Scunthorpe.

Community hub completed The engineering services provided by BSP for a new community hub in Lincolnshire have been hailed as ‘exceptional’.

The scheme at North Hykeham featured a club room and kitchen, changing facilities, multi-purpose areas and meeting space, and was built by Gelder Group for North Hykeham Town Council.

Jon Rigby, associate at project architects Bond Bryan Architects, said: “Clive, Matt and the BSP team made an exceptional contribution to the Community Hub Project. The technical awareness, professionalism, flexibility and cooperation made them a joy to work with from start to finish and the engineering design behind the scheme has resulted in a fantastic building which everyone is rightly proud of.” BSP was civil and structural engineer for the development.

Hundreds of homes

Work has been completed on a scheme to build 84 homes on the former Castle College site in Sheffield - with BSP lined up to provide civil and structural engineering support for hundreds more at locations around the country. BSP was appointed by Kier Partnership Homes for the £9 million project developed in conjunction with the Homes & Communities Agency (HCA). Now BSP is on course to support Kier Living with a range of other housing developments that are in the pipeline. “Kier has ambitions to increase the number of units that they take to site and BSP is very pleased to be a part of the team that is putting those plans in place,” said Matt Viggars, BSP associate director.

Award-winning schemes Two projects involving BSP have proved to be winners recently.

Charities hit the jackpot

Dog rescue donation

Animal lovers at BSP helped ensure stray and abandoned dogs at Babbington Rescue received gifts over Christmas by staging a collection. Office manager Katie White and administration assistant Hannah Rawson, delivered five boxes packed with food, treats and toys for the dogs which are cared for at the centre at Awsworth in Nottinghamshire. The rescue centre, which opened in February 1993 to cater for stray and abandoned dogs, deals with almost 1100 dogs a year.

Top of the Pops

A charity casino evening held by BSP Consulting and The Vinden Partnership in Nottingham raised £360, which was generously doubled to £720 by a donation from Bibby Financial Services. The cash was split between the MS Society and the Ear Foundation - two good causes selected by BSP and The Vinden Partnership.

Christmas Ball

MD David Sumner once again took part in the sell-out Notts Hot Property event - the annual charity fundraiser organised by the Nottingham construction and property sector. Held at nightclub Pryzm, the event attracted more than 600 people and was in aid of Rainbows Hospice.

Representatives from BSP joined fellow members of Marketing Derby at the annual Bondholders Christmas Ball. Held at the Roundhouse in Derby, it attracted more than 650 guests.

BSP’s business development coordinator Carrie Booth visited the Student Accommodation Conference & Awards 2017 - held at the National Conference Centre in Birmingham. She attended with Adrian Hollis, from Lewis & Hickey, Nilesh Mistry, from Couch Perry Wilkes, and Jonathan Hastings, from Gleeds. It was a unique opportunity to meet more than 800 universities, operators, developers, investors and innovators all under one roof.
