Health facility

In this issue

Blue light project A proposed new training centre in Derbyshire for the police and fire service has been designed with support from BSP Consulting engineers.

Work is progressing on site at Cygnet Hospital Coventry - a new 56-bed mental health hospital. Engineers at BSP Consulting have undertaken the full structural design for the £9.8 million scheme, which is being built by Clegg Construction. Situated at the old St Mary’s School site on Lansdowne Street in Coventry, the health facility will comprise three principal wards, plus eight individual step-down flats together with therapeutic, clinical and recreational facilities, and ancillary/ support accommodation. These will be set within a building floor plan totalling 4,427 square metres and constructed over three levels. The large steel-framed building with composite decks and a mix of masonry and cladding outer leaf has been designed by BSP in Revit – linking the architect’s Revit files with BSP files. “We have exported our models to the fabricator in IFC format for them to fabricate from,” said BSP BIM manager Dan Hinchley. Work began on site last Autumn and is due to be completed towards the end of 2016. It is the latest in a number of healthcare projects that BSP has been involved in, which have included primary care centres across the UK. “Cygnet Hospital Coventry is an excellent example of how BSP is using expertise in Revit to make the design and construction processes more streamlined and efficient,” added Dan. Lee Hammon, Cygnet Health Care’s commercial director, said: “We are most excited about bringing a new hospital to the West Midlands’ region. It is an area where we have held strong and positive NHS relations for many years, and we are delighted to be able to offer these important NHS customers a more local service, to meet their commissioning needs.” Architects for the scheme are London-based Tangram Architects. BSP’s engineer on the project is chartered structural engineer Patience Bazarwa.

Emergency services project Designs for a new joint training centre for the emergency services in Derbyshire have been drawn up by engineers at BSP Consulting. The development for Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service and Derbyshire Constabulary is due to be built on the site of the constabulary’s headquarters at Ripley. The £9.5 million scheme features a number of facilities including a new two-storey training building with an attached three double-bay vehicle garage and associated training buildings for Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service, along with fire behaviour simulation training facilities, training towers, and search and rescue facilities. A new training building for Derbyshire Constabulary is also

planned for the site. BSP undertook a number of civil, structural and traffic and transport engineering roles including flood risk assessment and drainage strategy, and a pre-planning Transport Statement. The designs include external works, car parking and provision of a biomass plant to serve both buildings. Two existing portal frame storage buildings and associated garage buildings are due to be demolished to accommodate the new facilities. A planning application was submitted in January 2016. The scheme is the latest in a number of emergency services facilities that BSP has been involved in.

Regeneration scheme

BSP has played a key role in a multi-million pound mixed-use regeneration scheme planned for Lichfield town centre. The proposed development by U+I includes a multi-screen cinema, a new gym, up to ten new restaurants, around 25 shops, 82 apartments, 11 townhouses and a new landscaped public area. The scheme also features a new bus station for the city near to the railway station and 500 car parking spaces - making the development an important new hub right in the centre of the historic Staffordshire city.

BSP is structural, civil and transportation engineer for the planned development, which is currently under consideration by Lichfield District Council. As well as handling the core civil, structural and drainage aspects, BSP has been involved extensively in the traffic and transportation designs to accommodate the new bus station, including liaison with bus operators and other key stakeholders. “This proposed redevelopment for Lichfield is a major town centre regeneration scheme, which has embraced the skills of a number of

BSP engineers, who specialise in different areas of expertise,” said BSP managing director David Sumner. Designed by Leeds-based architects Group Ginger, the Friarsgate development aims to enhance the leisure, retail and residential offering for the area with a scheme that preserves and respects the unique history and culture of Lichfield. It is being proposed by Development Securities (Lichfield) Limited a wholly owned subsidiary of U + I Group PLC, with a decision on the planning application expected this Spring.

focus on.... size isn’t everything Small is beautiful BSP uses the same level of expertise – regardless of the size of a project. The firm is equally at home working on small, bespoke schemes, as it is on large developments, and the level of technical input provided to clients is just the same. Since founding in 1999, the company has worked on many small, individual projects valued at under £500,000, as well as much larger schemes. “BSP remains competitive at that level and I’m pleased to say that we provide the same level of technical expertise as we would to significantly larger projects,” said business development director Jef Todd.

Listed building development

Expertise from BSP’s engineers provided input on a village housing scheme which involved the refurbishment and conversion of a listed former pub. The work, which included some demolition, as well as the retention of key features, was carried out for Waters Homes, who partnered with JPC Developments to complete the project in Aslockton, Nottinghamshire. As well as conversion of the pub and the neighbouring stables to create two homes, the development, known as The Blomfield, also features six new build properties.

Conversion scheme

A project to refurbish and convert an office building in Romford into apartments is due to be completed in the summer. BSP is civil and structural engineer for the development at Morland House. The company has also undertaken a feasibility exercise for the potential of adding two additional storeys on the roof of the building.

BSP engineers have experience of a wide range of stores, including smaller neighbourhood outlets and local schemes. In Leicestershire, the firm’s engineers were involved in the design of the Cooperative store in Ratby, which featured difficult ground conditions requiring CFA (Continuous Flight Auger) piling. The project was carried out for Pure Construction, working for David Wilson, with the architects Staniforth Architects Ltd.

Housing projects

Work is shortly due to get underway on site at three affordable housing projects that BSP is involved in for Geda Construction. The company is civil and structural engineer for 13 homes being built at Brant Broughton in Lincolnshire, 18 homes planned at Keelby in Lincolnshire, and ten homes being constructed at Greatworth in Northamptonshire. The projects are the latest that BSP has undertaken for Geda and follow two schemes recently completed – a development of ten homes in North Thoresby, Lincolnshire, and a development of eight houses in Thornborough Road, near Colville, in Leicestershire.

BSP Consulting at MIPIM 2016 A team from BSP Consulting is attending MIPIM 2016 – the world’s largest property event. Managing director David Sumner, business development director Jef Todd and business development coordinator

Carrie Booth are representing the company at the four-day real estate exhibition, conference and networking event, which takes place in Cannes from 15th to 18th March. BSP has attended the event for a number of years now and it’s an excellent opportunity to network, gather information and meet clients, associates and contacts. Attracting 21,400 international property professionals, MIPIM is due to host more than 2,445 exhibiting companies, visitors from 89 countries, and is regarded as the world’s largest gathering of international property leaders, and the place to discover information about development projects and real estate industry insights. David, Jef and Carrie are taking part in a number of networking events, talks and other organised activities.

Accreditation success BSP Consulting has successfully gained Safety Schemes in Procurement (SSIP) accreditation as a designer – the latest in a number of accreditations that the firm has under its belt. The worksafe assessment scheme is a nationally recognised health and safety assessment process, and BSP was assessed by SSIP Forum Member, Safety Management Advisory Services (SMAS), before being awarded a Worksafe Consultant Membership Certificate. “Increasingly, consultants and contractors need to show clients and others that they have certain health and safety capabilities, and I am very pleased to announce that BSP has added SSIP to the list of the many accreditations that the company has,” said business development director Jef Todd.

Under-track crossing

BSP engineers have played a key role in a Scottish drainage scheme by providing the expertise for the jacking of pipes under two railway lines. A 43m long 1.83m internal diameter pipe located some 5.5m below ground level was successfully jacked under both the North Clyde and Argyle Railway lines, near Glasgow, as part of the Dalmuir drainage scheme undertaken by Scottish Water. The drive was carried out in the extremely weak Cohesive Clyde Alluvium ground. BSP engineers worked with Active Tunnelling Limited as design consultant and carried out: shaft designs, anticipated settlement calculations, pipe integrity checks for rail loadings, as well as thrust wall calculations. As part of the works, Network Rail required track monitoring to be undertaken to ensure that settlements did not exceed the predicted limits. The work was successfully completed within the allocated time frame and was one of the latest projects undertaken by BSP and Active Tunnelling in a strong relationship which has built up over more than ten years

New role for Carrie

BSP has appointed Carrie Booth as business development coordinator at the company. Carrie joined BSP as an administration assistant in August 2004, before becoming accounts assistant and then office manager in January 2010. In recent times she has been playing an increasingly important role in business development within the organisation. Her new position began on 1st February 2016. “Carrie’s commitment to business development has shone through and we are delighted to now have her as a full-time member of the business development team, at a time when BSP is growing,” said BSP business development director Jef Todd. Carrie, a keen runner out of work, is a member of Women in Construction, Nottingham Means Business, and attends a number of networking events on behalf of BSP, including the First Thursday Club. She also attends Construction Leaders Club, East Midlands Chamber of Commerce and Marketing Derby events. She said: “I’m really looking forward to building on business development opportunities for BSP and supporting the company’s expansion plans across the Midlands and the UK.”

Refurbishment projects Nottingham-based property developer Bildurn has appointed BSP on two of its city centre refurbishment and renovation schemes.

BSP engineers are working with RD Architects and Franklin Ellis Architects on a project to transform the Gresham Hotel building by refurbishing the existing ground floor retail units and converting the former hotel into city centre apartments. BSP has provided value engineering services as part of the internal modification plans for the building, which is in Carrington Street, near Nottingham Railway Station.

The company is also providing structural engineering support for the refurbishment of the building next to Waterstones in Bridlesmith Gate, Nottingham, which was formerly occupied by a jeweller. The work, which is about to get underway on site, will provide upgraded retail space. It is the first time Bildurn and BSP have worked together on schemes, said BSP senior structural engineer Gareth Ellison. Bildurn estates manager Mike Tuck

said: “These developments will create high quality residential and retail premises, and we are pleased to have a locally based company with BSP’s expertise on board to help us achieve our ambitions.”

Fusion under the spotlight With an increasing number of clients using the Fusion light-gauge steel super structure solution in their projects, BSP hosted a visit to Fusion’s headquarters in Northampton for the company’s structural engineers and invited guests. Fusion designs, manufactures and builds pre-insulated light-gauge steel structures for a range of developments including student accommodation, schools, residential schemes, healthcare premises, care homes, and hotels. The system delivers a means of creating high performance, sustainable buildings, at affordable costs, and the firm has had experience of more than 5,300 structures. The unique feature of the system is Fusion’s patented pre-insulated

external wall system (ThermaShieldTM 162), which integrates structure, insulation and cladding support in a single factory process. BSP has used the system on a number of developments, with others in the pipeline. Associate director Paul Elphick said: “It was a fascinating visit and really beneficial to learn more about Fusion Building Systems and to see first-hand how the product is designed and manufactured. With early design team involvement there are a number of benefits to using this system, including speed of on-site erection and flexibility for services integration.” The system also has environmental benefits, being 100% recyclable for both steel and EPS.

Congratulations to BSP systems administrator James Payne and his wife Kate on the arrival of their son Zachary James Payne, who was born on 13th October 2015, weighing 9lb 2oz. Best wishes for the future from all at BSP.

Patience was a virtue… for Chartered Structural Engineer Patience BSP’s latest engineer to become chartered has been through more than most before being awarded the title. Chartered structural engineer Patience Bazarwa, who joined BSP in September 2007 as a graduate structural engineer, had to overcome a number of challenges ahead of gaining the qualification. “I did my Bachelor’s degree in Africa and when I moved here, I was told that even though I had a degree, it wouldn’t be sufficient because it was from a non-accredited university,” she explained. “I therefore had to start the process to Chartered Membership by

doing a full-time MSc degree at The University of Nottingham. This lasted a year. After that, the next step was to enrol as a graduate member with the IStructE, but again, the issue with my BSc degree obtained from Africa cropped up! “I was advised that my qualifications had to be assessed by the institution’s Academic Qualifications Panel to see if I could be allowed to enrol. This cost time and money of course,

but BSP was extremely supportive and paid for all the expenses. My qualifications were assessed in 2013 and I was really pleased when they let me enrol as a graduate member.” Two years later, after submitting project work, undertaking a professional review interview, attending relevant courses and passing exams, Patience became a fully qualified chartered structural engineer. “I got a lot of support from the engineers at the office and am so grateful. I couldn’t have achieved a pass without all the help I had,” said Patience, who is based in the firm’s Nottingham office.
