BSP scores in the sports sector

Cadet HQ role

BSP Consulting has strengthened its expertise in the sports and leisure sector with a string of projects – some of them on the world stage. The company carried out a flood risk assessment for a new training centre for the British elite canoeing team at Dorney Lake. Known as Eton Dorney during the London 2012 Olympics, the site was the home of the flat water rowing, canoeing and other similar events during the games. From water sports to rugby, and our engineers were asked to undertake a ground investigation at Twickenham to look at the feasibility of constructing corporate entertainment suites for the 2015 Rugby World Cup. Meanwhile, BSP has also been appointed as geotechnical, civil and structural engineer on two projects in Dagenham and Barking, in East London, to create new football changing facilities and new artificial and grass pitches to improve playing provision. BSP’s client is Academy of Dreams. BSP is also currently civil and structural engineer for a £5.6 million sports hall and fitness complex at Loughborough University. “We’ve worked in the sports and leisure sector for many years, but recently we’ve won a number of sports-related appointments, some of them with links to worldrenowned events,” said director Clive Roddick. Closer to home BSP has been involved in several grassroots sports projects including one at Landau Forte Academy in Tamworth where the company was involved in developing a new sports hall. The building is used primarily as an indoor cricket facility but also has a dance floor and a climbing wall.

The London football project follows a similar scheme in Leicester where BSP provided a full engineering role, including site investigation, infrastructure and structural design, for six FA academies built by Willmott Dixon Construction for Leicester City Council via the SCAPE framework in a £7 million scheme. The footballing centres across the city featured changing and showering facilities, as well as all-weather and grass pitches.

Bank manager visit

Senior relationship manager at NatWest, Dawn Wesselby-Hughes, was given first-hand experience of life at BSP Consulting when she joined the team for a day as part of a scheme to get to know clients better. Dawn, who works at NatWest Commercial, was taking part in national ‘take your bank manager to work’ day. She was welcomed into the BSP head office in Oxford Street, Nottingham, and then given a tour of some of the East Midlands projects that the company is involved in. This gave her an insight into the different stages of development that buildings go through. Dawn is pictured with BSP director Carl Hilton at the new medical centre being built in Wilford Lane, West Bridgford, where BSP is civil, structural and transportation engineer. She also visited the new Network Rail office scheme in Derby and a project in Beeston Square.

Town centre upgrades

BSP is currently playing a key role in developing two town centres. The company is structural and civil engineer for a £2.7 million scheme which is rebuilding and refurbishing The Square in Beeston, Nottingham. The site, which will feature shops and a gym, is being reshaped to accommodate the second phase of the city’s tram system. Developer is Henry Boot Developments and architect is Jefferson Sheard Architects. Meanwhile BSP was also commissioned to look at the main commercial streets in Holywell town centre in Flintshire, in north Wales, to improve access into the town centre and to de-clutter and refresh the public realm. BSP designed the public realm works, together with Harrison Design Development - looking at various improvements such as re-design and upgrade of pedestrian and cycle facilities, de-cluttering of street signs and lining where possible, changes to surfacing materials, designing pedestrian crossing facilities along key desire lines, and associated speed reducing features for vehicles. Initial design stage has now been completed for the work in the town centre, which is a Conservation Area.

Business development director Jef Todd represented the company at the Institution of Civil Engineers East Midlands Annual Gala Dinner and Awards at The Belfry, Nottingham, in June. The event brought together a wide range of industry professionals to meet, network and celebrate excellence in regional infrastructure research, design and construction.

Cadet HQ

Nottinghamshire

Golf Day

BSP has been appointed as civil, structural and transportation engineer for a new £1 million cadet centre being built off Wilford Lane, West Bridgford. The new HQ, which will feature a training room, lecture room, radio room and two stores, will be used by young people in the Army Cadet Force (ACF) and the Air Training Corps (ATC). Architects Maber designed the building, which is being constructed by John Martin Hoyes of Lincoln for East Midlands Reserve Forces and Cadets Association (RFCA). The work began in Spring and is expected to take six months.

NSPCC fundraiser

Housing Scheme

MD David Sumner and BSP’s marketing consultant Peter Jubb took part in a golf day organised by Nottinghambased Focus Consultants. Held at Belton Park Golf Club in Grantham, the event raised £250 for Macmillan Cancer Support. David was chuffed to win the ‘nearest to the pin’ award at the event, which attracted 27 players from across the East Midlands.

BSP fielded a team at the Nottingham Corporate Challenge Quiz, held at Alea in the city to raise money for the NSPCC’s ChildLine. The annual event netted £1,700 for the charity. While the BSP team didn’t win a placing in the quiz, BIM manager Luke Jones scooped a bottle of champagne in the heads and tails game, while civil engineer Cat Delamore won a box of chocolates in the raffle.

Work is now underway on Nottingham Community Housing Association’s development of almost 70 homes on the former Radford Mill site, off Derby Road in Nottingham. BSP is civil and structural engineer for the social housing scheme which features 18 houses and 49 flats. Architects are Pelham Architects and BSP’s client is construction group Galliford Try.

Award winners BSP was delighted to scoop an accolade at this year’s Nottingham Post Business Awards. The company beat off strong competition from Hillarys Blinds and Trent Bridge to take the Nottinghamshire Sales and Marketing Award. The judges praised the way that BSP had re-shaped its strategy during tough times for the construction industry and had developed a marketing push to widen its customer base, which left the business well-placed to make the most of the upturn in the economy. “We were thrilled to win the award, at what is one of the region’s most high profile awards ceremonies,” said BSP business development director Jef Todd. “We were up against really tough competition in the form of Trent Bridge, who had staged the Ashes, and Hillarys Blinds, who had undergone a rebrand. Both had cracking sales and marketing strategies, with results to match. Congratulations to them and to all the winners and finalists. The evening was a great showcase for the enterprise and spirit that’s among the business community in Nottinghamshire.”

Retirement scheme

A £6.5 million project to build a retirement complex and bungalows at Arbourthorne, Sheffield, has been completed. BSP was civil and structural engineer for the Sanctuary Housing scheme, which has created 52 apartments for the over 55s and four eco-friendly homes. The scheme is part of a redevelopment of the Arbourthorne Fields area, and was built by Keepmoat, who received a high rating during an assessment under the Considerate Constructors Scheme while building work was underway. The contractors received a ‘Performance Beyond Compliance’ certificate after achieving a mostly excellent rating. As a key development partner, Sheffield City Council provided the land for the development.

Station repairs

Experts at BSP put forward an alternative method of repairing the roof to Hull Station which meant the existing timbers could be kept in place. The overcladding system also avoided any additional strengthening work to the listed structure. Engineers from the company were appointed by Miller Construction to look at repairs to the roof of Paragon Station in Hull, which comprised tongue and grooved timbers spanning between barrel vaulted cast iron arched frames. The timbers in many instances were rotting. Not only did the alternative method proposed mean the existing timbers could remain, it was also more cost effective and time efficient, said BSP’s director and rail expert Carl Hilton.

Birthday for BSP BSP Consulting is celebrating 15 years of business this summer. The company, which was originally known as The Breakwell Sumner Partnership, was founded in the Lace Market, Nottingham, in July 1999. Directors David Sumner, Martin Breakwell, Clive Roddick and Mark Rayers moved to the firm’s current headquarters in Oxford Street, Nottingham, less than four years later. BSP continued to expand and now has offices in Derby, Leicester and Sheffield. “We’re very pleased to celebrate BSP’s 15th anniversary,” said managing director David Sumner. “We’ve come a long way since we first launched in 1999, and are now firmly established in the construction sector, not just in the East Midlands but in the UK.

BSP, which employs around 50 staff, works across the UK and earlier this year announced its first international appointment, with two contracts in Kurdistan.

Fbe appointment

Business development director at BSP, Jef Todd, has become the regional chairman of the East Midlands fbe (Forum for the Built Environment). Jef, who has been on the committee of the property, development and construction professionals’ group for three years, and was vice chairman, takes over from Nic Jepson, director of Nottingham-based InLine Property Consultants, who held the post for two years. Nic has been made East Midlands regional director, having been promoted after Adrienne Vaughan, AVA PR, completed her two-year tenure in the role.

Jef said: “This is a key appointment and I am looking forward to promoting the fbe across the East Midlands.”

The fbe is a national organisation, with branches across the UK and is the longest established networking group for the property, development and construction industries. Initially established in the East Midlands, the organisation runs an annual awards scheme, as well as a number of social and other events. It covers Leicestershire, Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire.

Travel award

BSP was among the first businesses to receive accreditation certificates from Derby organisation Connected for encouraging sustainable travel. The first Connected Business Awards, held at the Roundhouse, Derby, recognised the achievements of individuals and businesses in Derby in respect of encouraging their employees to travel more sustainably.

BSP, which has an office at Pride Park, Derby, received a bronze accreditation based on its achievements over the past 12 months. “We incorporate sustainable travel into plans for clients, and encourage our own staff at BSP’s offices to think about how they travel to and from work. We are very pleased to have received recognition for that,” said BSP director Mark Rayers, who runs the company’s traffic and transportation division.

who completed the 10k in 44 minutes 58 seconds. BSP MD David Sumner, who also took part, said: “It was great to see so many BSP staff turn out to what is a really popular event in Derby. Well done to everyone who completed the race.” Pictured are some of BSP’s runners outside the company’s office at Pride Park, Derby.

On the ball

Business development director Jef Todd joined the Keepmoat Regeneration Ltd team for a charity football match against a Sheffield Wednesday Football in the Community team. BSP director Carl Hilton and BIM manager Luke Jones really milked the BIM Show live in Manchester – picking up valuable information and gaining inspiration during the two-day visit. The event, which was billed as the UK’s most established BIM event, included more than 40 expert speakers and 30 breakout sessions delivering BIM content, alongside a bigger expedition featuring suppliers and real life application. Carl and Luke joined around 600 BIM users, experts, and suppliers at the event, which was hailed as the largest networking event in the BIM calendar. Among the keynote speakers were Marc Priestly, former McLaren mechanic and Formula One expert, Rob Charlton, chief executive of BIM Technologies and Professor David Philp, head of BIM at Mace.

Best wishes to BSP associate Matt Viggars who married Lucy Hughes at St Peter and St Paul Church, Hathern, near Kegworth, in April. We wish the happy couple all the best for the future.
