FROM OUR DIRECTOR Welcome to the Spring season at Bridport Arts Centre. When programming, we don’t have a Winter season we aim for Spring, Summer and Autumn – all the happy colourful months!

Curtis is going to be running to raise money for the Arts Centre! 10 Half Marathons in 10 months. Show him your support and donate what you can here www.justgiving.com/bridportartscentre The Arts Centre is a registered charity and it’s only with your kind generosity that we can keep bringing arts and culture to your doorstep. see page 6

This brochure is jam packed with things for all. We are very excited that Philip Sutton has agreed to return to the Arts Centre this season with a very special exhibition on his work on William Shakespeare, the added events for this are still being programmed – so keep your eyes peeled for ‘Bard themed events and workshops’. Philip Sutton at 90, which was his last exhibition was the best attended exhibition on record at the Arts Centre, so it seemed a no-brainer to ask him to come back. We have two excellent festivals – the return of the popular Page to Screen Film Festival (24 – 28 April), but also a first for Bridport – a Fashion Festival (4 – 10 March) full of talks, films and workshops. I would just like to thank everyone who has supported the Arts Centre recently by not only buying tickets, by for your generous donations. The Sponsor a Slate campaign is half way to its target, with only £2000 more to raise to do the work. If you would like to donate, look online or pop in to the Arts Centre to find out more. Enjoy the season, I know I will!

YOUNG PICASSO Tuesday 26 Feb, 7.30pm Tickets: £10

Pablo Picasso is one of the greatest artists of all time – and right up until his death in 1973 he was the most prolific of artists. Many films have dealt with these later years – the art, the affairs and the wide circle of friends. But where did this all begin? What made Picasso in the first place? Too long ignored, it is time to look at the early years of Picasso; the upbringing and the learning that led to his extraordinary achievements.

Working closely with all three Picasso Museums in Malaga, Barcelona and Paris this film explains how he rose to great heights.

ORLANDO Tuesday 12 Mar, 7.30pm Tickets: £15/£13

The new adaptation of Virginia Woolf’s groundbreaking 1928 novel ORLANDO. It's premiering at this year’s Edinburgh Festival Fringe (at Assembly Roxy Upstairs) and is then touring throughout 2019. Orlando – Who is she? Who is he? Who are we? Celebrating Dyad’s tenth year, performer Rebecca Vaughan and writer/director Elton Townend Jones present the comedic tale of an immortal poet, whose gender cannot be pinned down, whose spirit cannot be caged, and whose irreverent, romantic adventures across British history provide a life-affirming, magic-realist exploration of human identity: personal, sexual and national. Drawing on a decade’s worth of successful theatre-making, this introspective, but funny and uplifting voyage into the very soul of what it means to exist in the world whilst remaining true to ourselves, is the culmination of everything Dyad has so far created, toured and presented across the world.

QUENTIN CRISP NAKED HOPE Friday 31 May, 7.30pm Tickets: £13/£12

Written and performed by Mark Farrelly Directed by Linda Marlowe From a conventional upbringing to global notoriety via The Naked Civil Servant, Quentin Crisp was an extraordinary raconteur and wit. Openly gay as early as the 1930s, Quentin spent decades being beaten up on London’s streets for his refusal to be anything less than himself. His courage, and the powerful philosophy that evolved from those experiences, inspire to the present day. This much-acclaimed solo play, following an off-West End season and recent appearance off-Broadway, shows Quentin in his beloved Chelsea flat in the 1960s, and in his final years in his adopted New York. Naked Hope is a gloriously uplifting salute to a true one-off, and a timely reminder of the urgent necessity to live every day as your real self...no matter what they say.

Henry V is a strong influence for Philip’s work on Shakespeare:

“I realised that Henry V, Elizabethan England and the battle of Agincourt was a good beginning for me. It has been a great revelation to translate that particular part of English history. One thing that struck me about Henry V marching his army through France was the 15,000 men that travelled through the countryside, farmers and people around about would have remained undisturbed”.
