CAR PARKING The parking bay for disabled drivers is immediately outside the venue. Other visitors are advised to use the public car park on the left hand side further down South Street, leaving town.

LETTER FROM DIRECTOR This season we’ve got musical treats for all, with the wonderful Gaz Brookfield returning, No Petticoats Here, the story of remarkable women of the First World War, and The Vision with their tribute to the ever-popular ABBA. Our key event this season is the Church of Pleasure, a naughty, not-to-be-missed cabaret and circus evening. This show will take over the building and offer experiences you’ll need to see to believe…. We’re working hard for our younger audiences, too. Children can come and meet the Old Lady who Swallowed a Fly, go on a magical adventure with George and the Flight of the Imaginees, and more! In theatre we welcome back favourites Angel Exit with their show The Drive, while Townsend Productions bring us We Are the Lions, Mr Manager!,
the story of the 1976-78 Grunwick Strike. This season we’re also offering our visitors the chance to connect even more with the work that you love, with Audience Club. AC offers post-show talks and afternoon discussion events so you can talk with artists and other arts lovers. Look out for information throughout the brochure. Finally, this is the last season introduction I will be writing, as I will be leaving in spring. It has been an incredible few years here at BAC and I want to extend grateful thanks to all those people who have supported the Arts Centre and continue to do so. Trio 43 plays original music by composer Pete Canter. A winning cast comes together for Phelim McDermott’s clever vision of Mozart’s comedy about the sexes, set in a carnival-esque, funhouse environment inspired by 1950s Coney Island – complete with bearded ladies, fire eaters, and a Ferris wheel. The Gravity Drive are launching their new album ‘The Wildlight’ in 2018 and will be playing their new material for the first time live.
This year the group have been working on a short play – Rabbit. Set ten years after ‘the bomb’, this play portrays with frightening clarity the destruction of human character as social standards are lost in a struggle for power and survival. In the ruins of an abandoned building fifteen teenage survivors struggle to make sense of the desolation. Ironically, they begin to repeat their parents' mistakes. The play ends with a…well, you are just going to have to come to find out.

Mervyn Stutter is a satirical songwriter, comedian, actor and scriptwriter and has been making people laugh in comedy clubs, cabaret theatre, folk clubs, radio and TV for 40 years. He was a founder member of the Flying Pickets and this year celebrates his 32nd year at the Edinburgh Fringe and the 27th year of his legendary Pick of the Fringe showcase – making it the longest running show in the history of the Festival.
Nick Cope’s family performances are legendary! He has a fanatical army of little and not-so–little fans from all over the world. Iif you haven’t heard his songs or seen his shows before come and find out what you’re missing. With songs about head lice, dogs eating soap and dragons called Keith “Even the shyest of kids will warm to his unpretentious style.”
He has written weekly topical songs for BBC Radio including three series of It’s Been A Bad Week with Punt and Dennis (Radio 2).

In a culture that needs perfection and for everything to always be ‘fine’, “It’s Okay, I’m Dealing With It,” asks what do we do when things aren’t okay; how do we deal with difficult things? What happens if we don’t want to deal with them? Sometimes we laugh, sometimes we cry and sometimes we distract ourselves. But don’t worry: it’s okay, we’re dealing with it.

Working with town planners, architects, live feeds and enormous amounts of Lego, writer/performer Jack Dean is building a brand new model city, equal in value to the proposed Trident nuclear submarine replacement programme.
On August 9, 1942, the battered, starving Radio Orchestra of Leningrad, all with nothing left to lose, brought music to the people when they needed it most. This is a story of familial bonds tested under the threat of annihilation. It is the story of ordinary individuals, flawed and hopeless, who carried the spark of extraordinary deeds. And it is the story of one’s right to life. They did not know why they suffered, and they did not know when help would come, nor from where. They prayed, and they watched the skies. For a moment, their prayers were answered.
Nuketown is a combined storytelling and protest art project about cities, public money and the possible end of life as we know it.

Under the artistic direction of Christopher Marney, Ballet Central returns with a new programme showcasing the best in dance theatre. Dancers on the cusp of their professional careers will perform a mixed bill, featuring works by world-renowned choreographers. See Jenna Lee’s brand new creation Black Swan, a dark twist on the iconic classic, and a gothic reworking of the ‘Fairies prologue’ from Matthew Bourne’s Sleeping Beauty. To celebrate the work of Kenneth MacMillan the repertoire includes an excerpt from his rarely-seen Valley of Shadows. DRAWING DOWN THE FEMININE Saturday 3 Feb – Saturday 17 Mar Allsop Gallery Archaeological evidence suggest that many years ago, and for millennia, civilizations lived in relative peace without wars, when the figure of the goddess / feminine paradigm was central to the health and balance of societies. Around 3000 years ago there was a big shift and the era of the warrior began. When we look around us at our planet which we share with all other living creatures, we can see the damage that has been done, and which continues apace. There will be paintings, film, digital poetry, sculpture and mixed media work. The artists will be happy to discuss their work.

MATISSE DRAWING WITH SCISSORS Saturday 24 Mar – Saturday 21 Apr Allsop Gallery The French painter, sculptor and designer, Henri Matisse (1869-1954) was one of the 20th century’s most influential artists. His vibrant works are celebrated for their extraordinary richness and luminosity of colour and his spectacular paper cut-outs were his final triumph. Matisse: Drawing with Scissors, a Hayward Touring exhibition from the Southbank Centre comes to Bridport Arts Centre this Spring!
It features 35 posthumous prints of the famous cut-outs that he produced in the last four years of his life, when confined to his bed. It includes many of his iconic images, such The Snail and the Blue Nudes.

A TWO-PART EXHIBITION
Saturday 28 Apr – Saturday 2 Jun Allsop Gallery Dorset Visual Arts presents sketchbooks and unframed, developmental works arising from their interrogation of personal subjects broadly summarised as landscape, biography and the abstract. Alongside this collection is a separate selection of artworks by DVA’s new Salon grouping. This group is formed of fine artists working and exhibiting professionally on a regular basis and several newly qualified artists recently establishing their practice in Dorset. The selection reflects the dialogue they have established about their various methods of imagining, thinking and working. As a whole, the exhibition gives insight to the visual thinking and experimentation that informs work that is ultimately resolved and deemed ‘finished’.

She works with the richness of graphite pencil enhanced by colour and hints of gold. Using thread as a drawing medium, with her textiles sometimes incorporating small natural objects such as feathers, sticks and seeds.

The Bridport Prize is an international creative writing competition established by Peggy Chapman-Andrews in 1973 to raise funds for the Arts Centre.
With categories in poetry, short stories, flash fiction and the opening chapters of a novel, the Prize offers generous prize money while still raising vital funds for BAC’s work.
Today it is BAC’s flagship project and one of the most prestigious open writing competitions in the English language attracting many thousands of entries from across the globe each year.
