Horia Colibășanu este alpinistul român cu cele mai bune performanțe la altitudine extremă. Horia este medic stomatolog de profesie, dar se mândrește cel mai mult cu faptul că este alpinist purist și cucerește cele mai înalte vârfuri ale lumii, fără oxigen suplimentar și fără ajutorul sherpașilor. Am stat de vorbă cu el pentru a încerca să înțelegem mai bine ce este în mintea și sufletul unui alpinist ce înfruntă natura și își depășește propriile limite. Am vorbit despre camaraderie, frică, sportivitate, riscuri și avioane, toate văzute la altitudini extreme. Horia Colibășanu is the Romanian mountain climber with the best performances at extreme heights. Horia is a dentist as a profession, but he takes great pride in the fact that he is a purist climber and conquers the highest peaks in the world without additional oxygen and without the help of the Sherpas. We talked to him in order to find out more about the feelings and thoughts of an alpinist that defies nature and overcomes human limitations. We talked about friendship, fear, sportsmanship, risks and planes, all as seen at extreme altitudes.

Singurul român care a escaladat Annapurna, K2 și Dhaulagiri, 3 din Top 5 munți mortali ai lumii. Horia a mobilizat cea mai mare operațiune de salvare din istoria Himalayei, pentru prietenul său Inaki Ochoa, operațiune care a devenit subiect de film documentar (Pura Vida/the ridge). Pentru gestul său de camaraderie și umanitate, el a primit distincția “Spirit of Mountaineering” in cadrul celebrei gale “Piolets d’Or”.

Ce sentimente ai în avion când ajungi la 8000 de metri altitudine, atât de ușor și rapid, știind, pe pielea ta, câtă muncă, efort, timp și resurse necesită să faci o astfel de ascensiune la pas? Te mai impresionează să vezi lumea de la 8000 de metri din avion în condiţiile în care ai văzut lumea de pe munţii cei mai înalţi?

Cred ca mi-a plăcut întotdeauna înălțimea și sunt de fiecare dată fascinat atunci când văd ceva interesant din avion. Orașe mari, porturi sau munți, de sus le-aș putea admira ore în șir. Tehnologia e un lucru incredibil și forța avionului la decolare te face să înțelegi ce stă în spatele carcaselor de aluminiu.

Fiind obișnuit cu altitudini extreme, pentru tine, călătoria cu avionul sigur e diferită faţă de cea a unui pasager normal. Dar suntem curioși cum a fost primul tău zbor.

Nu, nu cred că e diferită. Îmi iau bilet, mă așez pe scaun și îmi pun centura. Ar fi diferită doar dacă avionul s-ar depresuriza (și aici bat în lemn sau, dupa caz, aluminiu) și, la întoarcerea din expediție, aclimatizat și perfect adaptat la 8000 de metri, în mod sigur nu ar trebui să folosesc masca de oxigen. În rest, sunt un pasager obișnuit, care, de cele mai multe ori când zboară, o face pentru a ajunge în Himalaya. Iar primul zbor a fost spre un munte la care toți alpiniștii visează: K2. Mi-a fost puțin frică, dar am încercat să mi-o controlez, gândindu-mă că sunt de 100 de ori mai în siguranță decât pe șosea. Chiar dacă mergeam spre cel mai dificil munte din lume, am simțit un gol în stomac la decolare. Mi-am zis: „drăcia asta accelerează mai tare decât motocicleta mea”, și a trecut și decolarea. Se pare că orice ar fi, bărbaților le plac caii putere.

The only Romanian that summited Annapurna, K2 and Dhaulagiri, 3 out of the 5 top mortal mountains of the world, Horia mobilized the biggest salvation operation in the history of the Himalayas for his friend Inaki Ochoa, operation that became the subject of a documentary called Pura Vida/ The Ridge. For his gesture of humanity and friendship, he received the “Spirit of Mountaineering” distinction during the well-known gala “Piolets d’Or”.

What feelings overcome you when you’re on a plane and reach 8000-metre altitude so easily and quickly, knowing from your own experience how much work, effort, time and resources are needed to make such ascension on foot? Does the world seen from the plane, at 8.000-metre high, still impresses you, given that you can see it from the peaks of the highest mountains?

I believe I’ve always liked the heights and I am always fascinated when I see something interesting from the plane. Big cities, ports or mountains, I could spend hours on end admiring them. Technology is an incredible thing and the plane’s power upon take-off makes you understand what lies beneath the aluminium cases.

Being accustomed with extreme heights, for you the plane journey is most certainly different from an ordinary passenger. We are eager to know how was your first plane journey.

No, I don’t think it’s different. I buy my ticket, I take a seat and I fasten my seatbelt. It would be different if the aircraft would depressurise (and here I knock on wood, or, as the case may be, aluminium) and when I come back from the expedition, acclimated and perfectly adjusted to the 8000-metre environment, I would surely not need the oxygen mask. As for the rest, I am a regular passenger who, more often than not, usually flies to go to Himalaya. And the first flight was to K2, the mountain which is the dream of all climbers. I was a bit scared but I tried to control my fear, thinking that I am 100 times safer on a plane than on the road. Even though I was travelling towards the most difficult-to-climb mountain in the world, upon take-off I still felt fear

02 Cu tehnologia și facilităţile din zilele noastre, alpinismul poate fi un sport aproape la îndemâna oricui (oxigen suplimentar, sherpași etc). Alpinismul purist însă, necesită forţe înmiite și un antrenament mult mai serios. Tu de ce ai ales să practici acest tip de alpinism?

Eu sunt sportiv și aceasta ar fi esența modului în care practic alpinismul. Cum ar fi ca la maraton să vină cineva și să te ducă cu mașina ultima parte a cursei? În mod clar, nu mai e vorba de forțele tale, ci de puterea și determinarea sherpașilor. În alpinism, în cazul unei probleme, clienții asistați, care, de multe ori, nu au nici măcar piolet, instrumentul de bază al alpiniștilor, devin complet neajutorați. Ei nu sunt numiți alpiniști. Ei sunt denumiți „clienți”. În final, e o problemă de etică. Nu m-aș putea bucura să urc așa un munte. Nu ar însemna nimic pentru mine.

With all the present technological innovations and facilities, mountain climbing can be a sport at hand for everybody (additional oxygen, Sherpas etc). Purist mountain climbing, on the other hand, needs thousandfold forces and a more serious training. Why have you chosen the traditional path?

I am a sportsman and this would be the core of the way I practise mountain climbing. Imagine how it would be in a marathon if you were driven by a car in the last lap of the race. Clearly here we do not speak about your own strength anymore, but about the Sherpas’ power and determination. With mountain climbing, in case there is a problem, the assisted clients -who very often do not even have an ice axe upon them, the climbers’ basic tool – become completely helpless. These

Episodul dramatic și foarte încărcat emoţional, trăit alături de Iñaki Ochoa de Olza pe Annapurna (poveste despre care s-au scris râuri), nu te-a făcut în nicio clipă să renunţi la alpinismul purist?

Episodul nu m-a făcut să renunț la alpinism, dar a fost o perioadă în care nu am mai plecat în Himalaya, în care a trebuit să lămuresc cu mine însumi ce îmi doresc de la viață și cât de departe pot merge cu riscul, pentru a realiza ceea ce îmi doresc. După doi ani, dragostea pentru munții înalți a înlăturat dubiile și m-am întors în Himalaya.

În situaţii extreme, care cer forţe suplimentare, alpiniștii care sar în ajutor își riscă propria viaţă pentru a încerca să salveze o alta. Unii dintre ei aleg, însă, să nu intervină, deși fizic, ar putea să fie pregătiţi. Având în vedere că e vorba totuși de instinctul de conservare, pot fi blamaţi cei care decid să nu intervină?

În principiu, ar fi simplu: nu poate fi blamat cineva care alege să nu intervină într-o situație potențial periculoasă, pentru a salva pe cineva care știa unde se află și care sunt riscurile. Nu suntem pompieri care salvează copii din incendiu. Dar nu au nicio scuză nici cei care trec pe lângă oamenii aflați în pericol și își continuă drumul spre creastă, pentru a nu rata ziua de vârf. De aici se poate nuanța și pot zice că în 15 ani de alpinism, din care zece în Himalaya, am văzut multe tipologii umane: de la alpiniști care veneau la salvări, neajutând cu nimic, doar ca să își facă publicitate, transmițând informații “live”, până la oameni adevărați care, deja, ei înșiși cu probleme medicale date de altitudine, nu plecau spre bază și rămâneau să ajute până la capăt, punându-și, fără niciun dubiu, viața în pericol.

Crezi că prietenia și camaraderia pe munte sunt de o profunzime care nu poate fi regăsită și în viaţa de zi cu zi? Ne poţi da un exemplu concret de camaraderie adevărată pe munte, care să nu te fi implicat pe tine și totuși să te fi mișcat?

Eu nu cred în lucruri unice. Prietenia și camaraderia sunt pretutindeni, dar ele ies la iveală în condiții grele. Există și în viața de zi cu zi, dar apar în vederea oamenilor doar rareori în condiții obișnuite. În 2013, pe Dhaulagiri, la 8000 de metri, un sherpaș a stat trei zile cu clientul său spaniol. Echipele de salvare venite cu elicopterul au ajuns prea târziu și spaniolul a murit, dar au reușit să îl salveze pe sherpaș. Deși fusese un efort și un risc fantastic, atât din partea echipei de salvare, cât și a pilotului, deși triști, am văzut luminița din ochii lor când îmi spuneau că totuși au salvat o viață de om.

people are not named climbers. They are referred to as ‘clients’. In the end it all comes down to ethics. I would not be able to enjoy climbing a mountain in this manner; it would mean nothing to me.

Didn’t the terrible and extremely emotional episode experienced together with Iñaki Ochoa de Olza on Annapurna (a story about which thousand of pages were written) determine you to give up, at least for a time, on the purist climbing?

The episode did not make me give up on climbing, but it was a time when I chose to stay away from the Himalayas, when I had to clarify with myself what exactly it was that I wanted in life and how far I could go on risking so that I could achieve that end. After 2 years, the love for the beautiful mountains dispelled the doubts and I returned to the Himalayas.

In extreme cases which require additional support, the climbers who come to the rescue risk their own lives in order to try and save another man’s life. Some of them choose not to step in, although physically they would be prepared. Given that, in the end, we’re speaking about the survival instinct, can those who decide to stand back be blamed?

Theoretically, it is simple: you cannot blame somebody who chooses to stand back in a potentially dangerous situation, in order to save somebody else who knew exactly where he was and what the risks were. We are not fire fighters who save children from fires. But those who go past people at risk

and carry on with their trail towards the peak not to miss the peak day have no excuses. I could say that in 15 years of mountain climbing, out of which 10 in the Himalayas, I have seen many human typologies, from climbers who came to the rescue just to end up doing nothing to help, because all they wanted was to advertise themselves by transmitting ‘live’ from the place of the incident, to real and true people, who already had health problems induced by the extreme altitudes, but chose not to leave towards the base camps and stayed there to help all the way, risking their lives.

Do you think friendship and comradeship on the mountain are deeper than in daily life? Could you give us an example of friendship on the mountain, which did not involve you, but was still able to touch you?

I do not believe in unique things. Friendship and comradeship are everywhere, but they come to the surface under harsh conditions. They do exist in our daily lives, but people rarely see them in normal and ordinary settings. In 2013, on Dhaulagiri, at 8000-metre altitude, a Sherpa stayed 3 days with his Spanish client. The rescue teams came by helicopter but a bit too late and the Spaniard died, but they managed to save the Sherpa man. Although it had been a fantastic effort on the part of the rescue team and the pilot, although they were sad, I saw a sparkle in their eyes when they were telling me that they had saved one human life in the end.

We are always chasing time, so when we remember those places that preserve their traditions, seeming to freeze the time, we are overwhelmed by feelings of amazement and gratitude. It’s difficult to stay genuine in a chaotic society and this is precisely the reason why people who respect their traditions deserve to be respected. Honouring these values, we would like to tell you about the Mount Găina Mai dens Fair – a unique festival worldwide, encountered only within the Romanians from the Apuseni Mountains, which has been taking place for centuries, around St. Elijah celebration, on July 20th.

adunatul fânului, făceau o petrecere de rămas-bun. Cei de la Vidra aduceau greble, genți din piele de oaie sau pieptare, bistrenii veneau cu țuică de cireșe și miere cu fagure, iar cei din Almașu Mare aduceau siropuri de fructe de pădure. Așa s-a născut Târgul de la Găina. După ce trocul lua sfârșit, oamenii puneau de o mare petrecere cu muzică, joc, plăcinte, găini fripte și brânză. Fetele din satele de pe văile Apusenilor își urcau zestrea pe cai și o aduceau la Târgul Găinii. Părinții erau cei care făceau ”tocmeala”, iar dacă aceștia spuneau ”da”, cununia era oficiată pe loc de preoții care veneau la târg special pentru asta.

The shepherds from Vidra used to bring rakes, sheepskin bags or breastplates, those from Bistra brought cherry brandy and honeycombs with honey, and those from Almașu Mare came with berry syrups. This is how the Găina Fair was born. After the trade-off came to an end, the men had a big party with music, dancing, pies, fried chickens and cheese. The girls from the villages lined along the Apuseni valleys, loaded their dowry in carriages and brought it to the Găina Fair. The parents of the young people were “haggling”, and if they said ‘yes’, the wedding was sealed right then and there by the priests who attended the fair especially for this purpose.

Serbarea se începe la primele ore ale dimineții – fetele vin cu zestrea, dar nici băieții nu se lasă mai prejos; ei vin însoțiți de familie și mulți poartă o curea bătută cu ținte de argint și aur, pe care o oferă alesei în schimbul unei năframe. Adunarea este, în schimb, doar de dragul tradiției, și doar perechile care se cunosc deja și și-au hotărât căsnicia participă la pețit. Fiecare știe, de fapt, că este așteptat de cineva care îi este drag și-l vrea alături. Fetele care nu sunt măritate merg la sărbătoare doar ca spectatoare, însă șansele sunt mari să întâlnească pe cineva nou.

Târgul de fete de la Găina este cea mai mare sărbătoare în aer liber din Transilvania. Este un prilej de bucurie, dar și de vânzare a produselor tradiționale. Cei care aleg să vină aici pot cumpăra produse tradiționale, lua parte la concertele și horele ce se fac an de an, și, mai presus de toate, pot observa porturile tradiționale ale localnicilor și pot simți pulsul uneia dintre cele mai vechi sărbători din România.

The celebration starts early in the mor ning - the girls come with the dowry, but the boys are trying not to be outdone; they also come together with their fa milies and many of them wear a silver and gold studded belt, which is presented as a gift to their chosen one, in exchange for the girls’ kerchiefs. However, the gathering takes place just for the sake of tradition and only the couples who already met and decided their wedding date, participate in the wooing traditional process. In fact, every participant knows that the beloved one is waiting there and wants them by their side. The unmarried girls come to this celebration just as spectators, but there are high chances for them to meet somebody.

A VERY IMPORTANT CELEBRATION

The Mount Găina Maidens Fair is the biggest open air celebration in Transylvania. It is an occasion for joy, but also for buying and selling traditional products. Those who choose to come here may buy traditional products, may enjoy the concerts and traditional round dances which are held every year, and above all, they may admire the traditional folk costumes of the locals and feel the rhythm of one of the oldest Romanian celebrations.

Este ora 04:00 dimineața, iar în satele din Delta Dunării încep să se aprindă luminile. Astăzi, ca de fiecare dată, pescarii din Crișan se pregătesc să plece conștiincioși la pescuit pe canalele Deltei, așa cum o fac de zeci de ani. Oricât s-au schimbat vremurile, orice tehnologie inovatoare a apărut, Delta Dunării se pare că s-a încăpățânat să rămână așa cum a fost dintotdeauna: un paradis. An de an, turiști români și străini vin să experimenteze puțin din atmosfera Deltei, în care timpul pare că a stat în loc. Fie că aleg ca punct de început pentru explorare satul Murighiol, Sulina, Crișan, Sfântu Gheorghe ori chiar Letea sau Mila 23, care sunt puțin mai îndepărtate, experiența rămâne adânc întipărită drept una dintre cele mai frumoase vacanțe. Pentru a vă bucura pe deplin de tot ceea ce înseamnă Delta Dunării, ideal ar fi să vă stabiliți un sejur de cel puțin 4-5 zile, de preferat o săptămână. Astfel, veți putea să explorați canalele și lacurile Deltei, veți putea admira coloniile de pelicani în voie, veți avea timp să vizitați satele deltaice mai îndepărtate și veți putea să vă odihniți și să pescuiți în tihnă.

It’s 4 am and lights are turned on in the villages from the Danube Delta. Today just as any other day, the fishermen from Crișan prepare to scrupulously go fishing at dawn down the Danube’s canals, just as they have been doing for years now. No matter how much the times have changed, or what innovative technologies have been invented, the Danube Delta seems to stubbornly remain as it has always been: a heaven. Year after year, Romanian and foreign tourists come to experience the atmosphere in the Danube Delta, where time seems to have stood still. Whether they choose as starting point for their journey the villages Murighiol, Sulina, Crișan, Sfântu Gheorghe or even Letea or Mila 23, which are a bit farther away, the experience stays with them forever, as being one of the most wonderful holidays. To completely enjoy everything the Delta has to offer, it would be ideal to plan at least a 4 or 5-day journey, preferably a week. Thus, you will be able to explore the Danube’s canals and lakes, to admire the pelican colonies at ease, you will have time to visit the remote Delta’s villages, to get some rest or to go fishing at leisure.

Dacă vreți să cunoașteți adevărata Deltă, să vedeți pelicani și să surprindeți cât mai mult din fauna și flora diversă, atunci trebuie să tocmiți o barcă mică cu barcagiu și să mergeți pe canalele mai retrase și înguste ale Deltei. Printre stufăriș și salcii veți descoperi păsări despre care nici nu știați că există, nuferi albi sau galbeni, peisaje perfecte pentru fotografii și multă liniște. O oră cu barca de 4 persoane o să coste minim 100-120 RON, iar cu o barcă de 6-8 persoane va costa 170-200 RON.

If you want to get to know the real Delta, to see pelicans and diverse flora and fauna as much as possible, then you must rent a little boat with a boatman and go on the most secluded and narrowest canals. Among the thickets and willows you will discover birds you did not even know they existed, white or yellow water lilies, perfect landscapes to take photos and an incredible silence. One hour with a 4-seat boat will cost you minimum 100-120 RON, and a 6 or 8-seat boat will reach 170-200 RON.

Majoritatea satelor din Deltă încă își mai păstrează stilul de viață tradițional, însă la Letea și Mila 23, fiind mai îndepărtate și mai puțin turistice, timpul pare că a stat în loc. Letea este o așezare de până în 500 de locuitori, majoritatea haholi (ucraineni), care include două mari puncte de interes pentru turiști: pădurea Letea (cea mai veche rezervație naturală din România) și cei minim 1000 de cai sălbatici care aleargă liberi pe suprafața de 5000 de hectare a pădurii. Letea este cunoscută drept “jungla Europei”, fiind singurul loc din Europa unde cresc liane înfășurate pe trunchiurile stejarilor seculari (în pădure pot fi văzuți stejari chiar și de 600 de ani). Satul pescăresc Mila 23 este numit și “satul campionilor”, pentru că a dat României nu mai puțin de 5 campioni olimpici, dintre care cel mai cunoscut este Ivan Patzaichin, cvadruplu laureat cu aur la Jocurile Olimpice.

Most of the villages in the Danube Delta still preserve their traditional way of life, but in Letea and Mila 23, being more remote and less known by tourists, it seems that time stood still. Letea is a community with roughly 500 inhabitants, the majority of them being haholi (Ukrainians), which includes two main tourist attractions: the Letea Forest (the oldest natural reserve in Romania) and the minimum 1000 free-roaming wild horses galloping on 5000-hectare area of wood. Letea is known as ‘the jungle of Europe’, being the only place on this continent where lianas wrapped around secular oaks can be found (in the wood you can also see 600-year old oaks). The fishermen’s village Mila 23 is named the ‘the village of champions’ as it gave Romania no less than 5 Olympic champions, among whom the most famous is Ivan Patzaichin, four times gold medal winner at the Olympic Games.

CUM AJUNGEŢI ÎN DELTĂ?

HOW DO YOU REACH THE DANUBE DELTA?

Ca în orice paradis, nu se ajunge ușor, ba mai mult, am putea spune că drumul până în satele din Deltă este unul inițiatic. Mai întâi, trebuie să ajungeți în Tulcea, cu mașina personală sau cu un tren. Din București se fac aproximativ 3 ore și jumătate, iar ca opțiuni de traseu puteți, fie să parcurgeți toată Autostrada Soarelui până la Năvodari și de acolo să continuați drumul spre Tulcea, fie să ieșiți de pe A2 la kilometrul 105, la Drajna, și să continuați drumul spre Tulcea pe traseul Slobozia - Țăndărei – Hârșova – Tulcea. Vă recomand varianta 2. Deși nu este unul dintre cele mai accesibile locuri de vacanță din România, peisajul dobrogean, priveliștea asupra munților Măcin, câmpurile întinse de rapiță sau mac primăvara și parcurile de eoliene o să vă captiveze. Din Tulcea, fie vă conti nuați drumul cu mașina, dacă mergeți la Murighiol, fie continuați mai departe cu o barcă până în Crișan sau Sulina. Spre exemplu, până la Sulina faceți maximum două ore cu barca rapidă și 4 ore cu „pasagerul”, iar călătoria costă aproximativ 50 de lei de persoană. Până la Crișan călătoria cu barca rapidă durează o oră.

As with any heaven, you cannot reach it very easily, more than that, we could say that the journey to the villages in the Delta is an initiatic one. First you must get to Tulcea, by car or by train. From Bucharest you’ll make around 3 and a half hours, and in terms of route options, you can take the Sun Motorway up to Năvodari and from there to continue the road to Tulcea, or exit A2 at km 105, at Drajna, and continue the road to Tulcea following the route Slobozia - Țăndărei – Hârșova – Tulcea. We recommend you the second option. Although it is not one of the most easily accessible holiday spots in Romania, the Dobrudja landscape, the view over the Măcin mountains, the outspread rapeseed or poppy fields in the Spring and the wind farms will enthral you. From Tulcea, either you go on by car, if you go to Murighiol, or further away by boat to Crișan or Sulina. For instance, up to Sulina it will take you maximum 2 hours by boat and 4 hours with the “passenger” and the journey costs around 50 lei per person. The speed boat journey to Crișan lasts almost an hour.

UNDE VĂ CAZAŢI ÎN DELTĂ?

Dacă până acum ceva timp singura opțiune de cazare erau casele localnicilor sau câteva pensiuni improvizate, în ultimii ani au început să apară resorturi de 4 și 5 stele care oferă tot confortul necesar unei vacanțe frumoase sau utilitățile unei reuniuni corporate sau team-building. Alternatively, the locals in the area make their houses available for tourists for a price starting with 80 RON/ room/night. Salina Turda este un loc incredibil, apreciat până și de vedete internaționale, precum Jared Leto, câștigător al Premiului Oscar, care și-a exprimat de curând admirația față de acest loc. Odată ajunși în subsol, vă veți afla pe fundul unei mări ce se întindea aici în urmă cu 13 milioane de ani. Însă, peisajul pare de pe altă planetă, dintr-un film SF. Unde mai puneți că veți da aici peste un lac pe care-l puteți străbate cu bărcile pentru a ajunge până pe insula din mijloc. La toate acestea mai adăugați și o “cascadă de sare”, eflorescenţe de sare, o roată mare și, dacă aveți noroc, și o orchestră care să cânte piese clasice, sub uriașul tavan în formă de clopot. The Turda salt mine is an unbelievable place, admired by international celebrities, such as Jared Leto, the Oscar winner, who recently expressed his admiration towards it. Also, Business Insider magazine declared it the most beautiful underground place in the world. Once you reach the bottom of the salt mine, you will actually be on the place where the sea expanded 13 million years ago. But the landscape seems to be from a different dimension, from a SF movie. Not to mention that here you will find a lake which can be sailed by boat in order to reach the island in the middle. To all these add up a “salt fall”, salt blooms, a huge wheel and, if you are lucky, an orchestra playing classical music, underneath the huge bell-shaped ceiling.

Supranumită și Capela Sixtină a Estului, Mânăstirea Voroneț oferă lumii una dintre cele mai frumoase nuanțe de albastru, nu degeaba a fost inclusă în patrimoniul mondial UNESCO. Biserica de aici a fost ridicată în anul 1488 în numai 3 luni și 3 săptămâni, un adevărat record pentru acea vreme. Ceea ce i-a adus monumentului denumirea de Capela Sixtină este scena Judecății de Apoi, pictată în 1547 pe fațada vestică. Mânăstirea este situată la sud de orașul Gura Humorului din județul Suceava, pe valea râului Voroneț. Este doar una dintre multele biserici și mânăstiri superbe din Bucovina. Dubbed the Sistine Chapel of the East, the Voroneț Monastery offers the world one of the most wonderful shades of blue, and it was included in the UNESCO World Heritage list. The church was built in 1488, in only 3 months and 3 weeks, a real record for that time. What brought the monastery the nickname of the Sistine Chapel of the East was the Doomsday scene painted on the western front wall in 1547. The Monastery is located south of Gura Humorului city from Suceava County, in the valley of the Voroneț River. This is only one of the several splendid churches and monasteries in Bucovina.

Cel care i-a dat acest renume a fost Bram Stoker, prin al său roman Dracula. În orice caz, merită vizitat, fiind inclus și de cei de la CNN într-un top al celor mai frumoase 10 castele din lume.

When you say Transylvania, the first thing that comes to a foreigner’s mind is vampires and Dracula, as here you can find the Bran Castle, the house of the most famous vampire. Actually, very few know that this castle does not have much to do with Vlad Țepeș, dubbed also Dracul, the Romanian ruler whom was thought to be a vampire. Besides the fact that it belonged for a period of time to Vlad Țepeș’ grandfather, the Bran Castle does not have any other connection with vampires. The one that gave it this reputation was Bram Stoker, through his novel, titled Dracula. Regardless, the castle is worth visiting, being included by the CNN in a top of 10 most beautiful castles in the world.

România nu este tocmai țara la care te-ai aștepta să găzduiască cea mai mare clădire administrativă pentru uz civil ca suprafață din lume, cea mai scumpă clădire administrativă din lume și cea mai grea clădire din lume. Dar Casa Poporului sau Palatul Parlamentului, cum se numește astăzi, îndeplinește toate aceste trei calități. Este și un simbol al comunismului și megalomaniei dictatorului Nicolae Ceaușescu, acesta demolând un cartier întreg de case pentru a înălța pe locul lui această clădire imensă. Toate materialele folosite pentru ridicarea și decorarea acesteia sunt 100% românești, iar 700 de arhitecți au lucrat pentru realizarea acestui mastodont de 1100 de camere. Mulți dintre bucureșteni disprețuiesc această clădire, dar turiștii sunt de-a dreptul fascinați de ea. Palatul Parlamentului se află situat în partea centrală a Bucureștiului, pe locul care astăzi se cheamă Dealul Arsenalului, încadrat de strada Izvor la vest și nord-vest, Bulevardul Națiunile Unite spre nord, Bulevardul Libertății la est și Calea 13 Septembrie la sud.

Romania is not exactly the place where you would expect to find the largest administrative building for civilian use in the world, the most expensive administrative building in the world and the heaviest building in the world. But the House of the People or the Palace of the Parliament as it is called today, meets all the above-mentioned criteria. It is also a symbol of communism and dictator Nicolae Ceauşescu’s megalomania, as he demolished an entire residential neighbourhood to raise instead this huge building. All the materials used in order to erect and decorate it are 100% made in Romania and 700 architects laboured to finish this incredibly big construction of 1100 rooms. Many of the people in Bucharest despise this building, but the tourists are completely fascinated by it. The Palace of the Parliament is located in the central part of Bucharest, on the place which is called today Dealul Arsenalului, surrounded by Izvor Street to the west and north-west, Națiunile Unite Boulevard to the north, Libertății Boulevard to the east and Calea 13 Septembrie to the south.

Clădirea care adăposteşte Uniunea Arhitecţilor din Bucureşti a devenit un obiectiv turistic reprezentativ pentru Capitală datorită celor două stiluri arhitecturale aproape antitetice. În mod oarecum ironic este reprezentativă și pentru întregul haos arhitectural din București, acea îmbinare de vechi și nou, de sticlă și cărămidă, ce îi cucerește pe mai toți turiștii ajunși aici. De la depărtare pare încă o clădire de sticlă, de birouri, dar pe măsură ce te apropii, îţi dai seama că paralelipipedul din sticlă se înalță (ca o ciupercă) dintr-o ruină. Fațada din cărămidă aparține unui fost sediu al Ambasadei Austro-Ungare, de dinainte de Primul Război Mondial. La Revoluția din ’89, vechea clădire a fost distrusă deoarece se credea că ascundea terorişti. Alte voci spun că a fost incendiată deoarece aici se aflau secrete ale securiştilor de la Direcţia a V-a, cel mai de temut departament al acestora. Misterul încă planează asupra motivului distrugerii. Astăzi, sediul Uniunii Arhitecţilor din România din Piaţa Revoluţiei este una dintre cele mai ciudate clădiri din România și, conform unor topuri, chiar din lume. De-a lungul timpului, aceasta a primit denumiri precum Borcanul, Bobocul de sticlă sau Clădirea cyborg.

The building sheltering the Romanian Architects’ Union in Bucharest became a representative tourist attraction for Romania’s capital, due to its two antithetic architectural styles. To a certain extent this ironic because that is also representative for the entire architectural chaos present in Bucharest, that kind of mixture between old and new, glass and bricks, that charms most of the tourists who come here. From afar, it seems another glass-made office building, but as you are getting closer you realise that the glass parallelepiped is emerging (as a mushroom) from a ruin. The brick façade belongs to a former headquarter of the Austrian-Hungarian Embassy, dating back before the First World War. In ’89, when the Revolution started, the old building was destroyed as it was thought to shelter terrorists. Other voices insist that it was set purposely on fire as it presumably was hiding some secrets belonging to the Romanian Secret Police, Directorate V, the most dreaded department. The mystery has not been elucidated yet. Today, the head office of the Romanian Architects’ Union from Piata Revoluţiei is one of the strangest buildings in Romania and, according to some tops, even in the entire world. Over time, this has been dubbed the Jar, the Glass Bud or the Cyborg building.

Cine a zis că cimitirul este un loc trist? În localitatea Săpânța din județul Maramureș găsiți Cimitirul Vesel, faimos pentru crucile viu colorate ale mormintelor, alături de picturile naive care ilustrează scene amuzante din viața persoanelor îngropate aici. În majoritatea culturilor, moartea este privită ca un eveniment foarte solemn. Aici oamenii preferă să-și aducă aminte cu zâmbetul pe buze de cei care au părăsit această lume. Întregul cimitir numără în jur de 800 astfel de cruci, sculptate din lemn de stejar, fiind un muzeu în aer liber, dar și un fel de antologie de proză scurtă - unele cruci având pe o parte, o descriere a vieții celui îngropat, iar pe cealaltă motivului morții sale. In Săpânța, Maramureș County, you will find the Merry Cemetery, famous for the brightly-coloured crosses on the tombs, together with the naïve paintings illustrating scenes from the lives of the people buried there. In most cultures, death is perceived as an extremely solemn event, but here people would rather have a smile on their faces when remembering those who left this life. The entire cemetery numbers around 800 crosses of the kind, carved in oak wood, and is an open-air museum, but also a sort of short story anthology – some of the crosses display on one side a short description of the dead person’s life, and on the other side the cause of death.

A tranquil oasis in the middle of one of the busiest and most chaotic cities in the world. Strolling around the canals will fill you up with good energy. You can admire the brightly coloured boats, and enjoy a good coffee and a home-made cake at one of the floating restaurants on the canals. Leaving Little Venice, you can head over to Greenwich, a royal borough which looks like a little town inside London. Greenwich is the location of the prime meridian of the planet and it is also a very cosmopolite area of London, filled with museums and marvellous buildings and parks. This is also the home of the Royal Observatory. You can take some time to roam the streets around the observatory and admire London from up above, and when the sun sets, take a trip down to the O2 Arena – a great place to have fun, full of restaurants, concert halls and cinema theatres.

They have managed to have 60 weddings so far. The first time they have ever talked about the ceremony, they were actually thinking to do this somewhere during their road trip to Australia. They had already given up their houses, jobs and other things from their past lives and while they were packing everything in order to start a new life, a crazy idea struck them both: if they were about to set for a road trip in a trailer named Peggy anyway, why shouldn’t they enjoy several weddings in each place they liked?

proaspătă, Lisa și Alex sigur au o poză de nuntă într-un peisaj idilic de genul. Grecia, Italia, America, Franța, Mexic, Guatemala și România sunt doar câteva dintre destinațiile vizitate în doi unde s-a zis marele ”DA”. Prima nuntă a fost una secretă, una despre care Alex știa tot, iar Lisa nimic. A avut loc într-o suburbie a Manchester, Anglia și a fost prima tură de emoții specifice căsătoriei. De aici, emoțiile s-au mutat în Quebec, Canada și apoi cei doi au împânzit lumea cu fericire în toate celelalte locuri în care și-au jurat dragoste eternă. Lisa trece de fiecare dată prin ritualul pregătirii miresei, Alex o așteaptă tot timpul emoționat și apoi petrec. În Hawaii și-au declarat dragostea după o legendă havaină în fața unui Haku și apoi au mângăiat delfini. În România, Lisa s-a îmbrăcat în haine tradiționale, și-a pus o coroniță de flori uscate pe cap, Alex a venit s-o ia un pic amețit de la țuica localnicilor, au pus cocarde în pieptul oaspeților și apoi au plecat cu veselie și cântec spre ceremonia de pe câmp. S-au căsătorit în Scoția pe vârful unui deal și au trăit vorba veche care spune că în această zonă poți să vezi într-o singură zi toate cele 4 anotimpuri. Alex a purtat un kilt, iar oboaiele și cimpoaiele i-au însoțit în această festivitate. În Maroc, Alex și-a pus haina tradițio nală Djellaba care arată ca o cămașă de noapte, iar Lisa și-a lăsat mâinile să fie mângăiate de henna și s-a îmbrăcat într-un caftan cu o broderie superbă. De fiecare dată au spus DA și plănuiesc să o mai facă, mai au multe locuri frumoase în care să se oprească și să facă o nuntă. 2 People 1 Life e un proiect care insuflă optimism și veselie, e un stil de viață inspirațional, iar Lisa și Alex reușesc prin acest scop să ne învețe cum să ne bucurăm de viață în atâtea și atâtea feluri și forme. It doesn’t really matter if we talk about a rocky mountain cliff, a sandy white beach or a field with unspoilt grass, one thing is certain: Lisa and Alex surely have a wedding photo in an idyllic landscape of the kind. Greece, Italy, America, France, Mexico, Guatemala and Romania are just some of the destinations visited, where the pair said the big YES. The first wedding was a secret one, which Alex knew everything about, and Lisa nothing. It took place in a suburb of Manchester, the United Kingdom, and was the first roller coaster of emotions characteristic to weddings. From then on, the emotions moved in Quebec, Canada and after that, the two lovers have spread their happiness in all the other places they sworn eternal love. Lisa always goes through the ritual of bride preparation, Alex always nervously waits for her and then they party. In Romania, Lisa wore a traditional folk costume and a dried flower crown, Alex came to pick her up, a bit tipsy after the locals’ plum brandy, they have pinned rosettes on the guests’ lapels and merrily left for the ceremony which was held on a field. They got married in Scotland on the top of a hill and have experienced the old saying that in this part of the world one can see all four seasons in one day. Alex wore a kilt and the bagpipes have accompanied them throughout the festivity. In Morocco, Alex donned the djellaba, the traditional costume, which looks like a night gown, and Lisa let her hands be embellished with henna and wore a splendidly embroidered mantle. De câte ori avionul decolează, simt cum o povară enormă mi se ridică de pe umeri. I find myself the polar opposite of many people when it comes to flying, the flight in itself is one of the most enjoyable parts of the whole experience for me. It’s the serene moment when you’re finally in the air, on your way to your destination and if you’ve forgotten to pack or do something, then it’s too late. You have no choice but to sit back, relax and look to the future. I always feel a huge burden lifting as the plane takes off.

Tales of a tardy traveller

Pentru mine, cea mai stresantă parte a vieţii este când, cu câteva ore înainte de zbor, mă hotărăsc să încep pregătitul bagajelor; este un carusel al emoţiilor. Dacă e vorba de un zbor matinal, cum este de obicei, atunci îmi pun alarma cu câteva ore înainte de plecare, pentru a avea destul timp să mă trezesc, să împachetez şi să plec spre aeroport. Sau cel puţin aşa cred, dar primul sentiment de panică totală se instalează pe la ora 2 dimineaţa. Când îmi dau seama că am uitat să fac check-in online şi nu am cum să-mi tipăresc tichetul de îmbarcare. Aşa că mă văd nevoit să mă duc la birou de dimineaţă pentru a folosi imprimanta. Îmi pun alarma cu o jumătate de oră mai devreme. Apoi, îmi dau seama de faptul că mi-am lăsat paşaportul într-un “loc sigur”, dar oricât m-aş strădui, nu reuşesc niciodată să-mi amintesc unde este ăla. Mă apuc să caut paşaportul cu frenezie pe întuneric, pentru a nu-mi trezi iubita, care mi-a spus în repetate rânduri să mă pregătesc cu o zi înainte. Ceea ce întotdeauna mi se pare a fi o idee grozavă, dar care nu se materia lizează niciodată. Căutarea bezmetică prin întuneric culminează de fiecare dată cu găsirea paşaportului în cele mai ridicole locuri.

OARE CÂND VA SUNA ALARMA?

Mă liniştesc şi mă duc înapoi în pat. Respirând din ce în ce mai adânc şi simţindu-mă din ce în ce mai relaxat, mă pregătesc mental pentru a mă trezi dis-de-dimineaţă şi a face bagajul. Trec câteva minute şi apoi iau telefonul să mă uit la ceas. De acum, nu se mai poate spune că este noapte, pentru că deja mijesc zorile. Îmi setez alarma cu zece minute mai târziu decât am setat-o deja, pentru a mă bucura de câteva minute suplimentare, inofensive, de somn. Acum vine momentul în care eu mă tot întreb cât o fi ceasul şi mă tot uit la telefon periodic, pentru a verifica dacă am ghicit corect. Jocul ăsta durează ore întregi şi îmi dau seama că nu voi putea adormi. Trezitul cu noaptea în cap pe mine mă distruge psihic. Cu cât sunt nevoit să mă trezesc mai devreme, cu atât mai târziu reuşesc să adorm. Este aproape garantat că voi adormi cu câteva minute după ce mă voi da bătut şi voi fi convins că n-o să mai adorm deloc. Alarma începe să sune şi mie mi se ridică părul pe şira spinării. Mă forţez să-mi deschid pleoapele, simţindu-le de parcă ar fi lipite. Mă scol din pat, împachetez în câteva secunde, fac check-in online, mă îmbrac, îmi iau produsele de toaletă, paşaportul şi mă aşez pe pat,

However, the few hours before a flight, when I decide to start preparing, now that, for me, is the most stressful part of life; it’s a roller-coaster ride of emotion. If it’s an early morning flight, which it most often is, then I would set my alarm a few hours before departure, giving myself plenty of time to wake up, pack and get to the airport. Or so I think, the first feeling of absolute panic usually strikes around 2am. I realise that I have forgotten to check-in online, and I have no way of printing my boarding pass. So, I have to head to work to use the printer in the morning. I set my alarm half an hour earlier. Next, I become conscious I have left my passport in a ‘safe place’, but for the life of me, I never remember where that safe place is. I search frantically in the dark for it, to make sure I don’t wake up my partner, who has repeatedly told me to prepare one day in advance. Which I always agree is a good idea, but it never materialises. The dark frantic search each time culminates in me finding it in the most ridiculous place.

WHEN WILL THE ALARM SET OFF?

Calming myself down, I usually head back to bed. Breathing heavier and feeling more relaxed, I mentally prepare to wake up early and pack. However, several minutes pass and I look at my phone to see the time. By now, it’s no longer night but early morning. I set my alarm for ten minutes later than already set to enjoy a few more, harmless, minutes of slumber. At this point my night consists of guessing the time and looking at my phone periodically to see if I was correct. This game goes on for hours and I realise that I will not be able to sleep. An early rise psychologically destroys me. The earlier I have to wake, the later I manage to sleep. It is almost guaranteed that I will fall asleep moments after resigning myself to getting none. The alarm goes off and sends shivers down my spine. I force my eyelids open, feeling as though they fused together. I get up, pack in a matter of seconds, check-in online, get dressed, get the toiletries, passport and sit back down on the bed, rewarding myself with a few minutes rest for my speedy organisation. Bad move, waking up in a panic stricken frenzy I realise I have fallen asleep again. I look at the phone in horror and count the dwindling minutes until departure. I jump to attention, grab everything, run out the door, dragging my one-wheeled, squeaky

Stau gata pregătit, estimând locul unde va opri uşa autobuzului. Îmi fac loc în autobuz, dând coate copiilor şi oamenilor în vârstă. Autobuzul ajunge la aeroport, după ce în prealabil s-a oprit la toate semafoarele şi staţiile posibile. Alerg spre poarta de securitate şi aştept nerăbdător să-mi vină rândul. Am deja pregătite cureaua, ghetele, geanta, laptop-ul, produsele de toaletă, toate sunt gata să fie aşezate în coşuleţul gri. Un singur lucru se întâmplă în favoarea mea. Niciodată nu declanşez “bip-ul” de la poarta de securitate. În timp ce trec prin ea, mă uit fix în ochii ofiţerului de securitate, pentru a nu trezi suspiciuni, n-aş şti să vă spun de ce. Cu un ultim sprint spre poarta care se află la celălalt capăt al aeroportului, ajung exact când ultimii pasageri se îmbarcă. Când în sfârşit mă aşez şi eu, las să-mi scape un oftat de uşurare. Orice s-ar întâmpla acum, deja nu mai ţine de mine. Ceea ce simt acum se numeşte euforie. Mă afund în scaun şi adorm cu gura deschisă, capul aplecat şi saliva curgându-mi din gură. Această schemă se repetă la nesfârşit şi se va repeta mereu câte zile voi avea.

I round the corner just in time to see the bus leave, and wait irritably on the next one. I stand ready, estimating the position at which the bus door will stop. Jostling my way onto the bus, I edge the ‘weaker’ children and frail elderly out of my way. The bus pulls into the airport after stopping at every possible traffic light and bus stop along the way. I race to security, and impatiently wait for my turn. By this time I have my belt, boots, bag, laptop, toiletries all ready to go into the little grey tray. One thing always goes my way. I never set of the ‘beep’ in security. I look over emphatically into the guard’s eyes as I pass so not to arouse suspicion, of what I do not know. Making a final lung bursting run to the gate at the opposite end of the airport, I arrive just as the final passengers are boarding. Finally sitting down, I breathe a huge sigh of relief. Whatever happens now is out of my hands. The feeling is euphoric. I sink into my chair and drift off to sleep, mouth open, head forward, and saliva dripping. This routine plays on a continual loop, and will do so for the rest of my life.

Un desert franțuzesc precum Tarte Tatin e normal să aibă o poveste controversată și să nască mai multe legende despre originile sale inventat undeva la 1800. Nici până azi experții nu s-au hotărât ce legendă să creadă. Una dintre povești spune că Tarte Tatin a fost inventată din greșeală în bucătăria hotelului Tatin, din apropierea Parisului. Hotelul era condus de două surori, iar una din ele a vrut să prepare într-o zi o plăcintă cu mere numai că, fiind obosită, a greșit rețeta și a uitat merele în cuptor, în zahărul cu untul transformat în caramel. Merele erau deja prea coapte așa că aceasta s-a gândit să toarne repede aluatul peste mere, încercând să ascundă textura greșită a merelor. Când s-a copt aluatul, a trebuit să scoată prăjitura din formă și a întors-o invers, cu merele în sus. S-a dovedit a fi o tartă cu un aspect caramelizat minunat și cu o aromă de caramel incredibilă. SWEETS FROM FRANCE: TARTE TATIN

It’s perfectly normal for a French dessert as Tarte Tatin to have a controversial story and to give birth to several legends about its origins invented around the 1800s. To this day, the experts have not yet decided what legend to believe in. One of the stories says that Tarte Tatin was invented in the kitchen of the Hotel Tatin, nearby Paris. The Hotel was managed by two sisters and, one day, one of them wanted to prepare an apple pie, but being tired she made a mistake while following the recipe and the apples were forgotten in the oven immersed in the sugar and butter caramel. The apples were already too baked, therefore she thought to quickly pour the dough on the apples, trying to hide the wrong texture of the fruits. When the dough was ready, she had to remove the cake from its shaped pan and to turn it upside down, with the apples upward. It turned out to be a tarte with a wonderful caramel appearance and an unbelievable caramel aroma. Pretty soon it has become the most wanted dessert, ordered by all the clients accommodated in the hotel. All legends have their charm and Tarte Tatin remains delicious regardless of the way it wa invented.

What is even more interesting, it’s the fact that when we apply the filter, the app does not turn the photo into a painting immediately, but does so layer by layer, just as a normal painting process. I had the pleasure to talk to Sandra Godec, L’Artisan Parfumeur representative, who came to Romania for a couple of days, for a MadisonLuxury Perfumery event.

Care este legătura dintre personalitate și parfumul pe care îl folosește cineva?

Cred că fiecare persoană îşi alege, instinctiv, un parfum în funcţie de personalitatea sa. Spre exemplu, persoanele vesele, optimiste îşi aleg un parfum fructat, floral, vesel într-un cuvânt. O femeie foarte conștientă de sexualitatea ei, spre exemplu, va alege arome mai tari, puternice, care atrag atenţia asupra ei. Şi exemplele pot continua.

What is the connection between the personality and the perfume one wears?

I believe each person instinctively chooses a perfume, according to his or her personality. For instance, happy, optimistic people choose a fruity, floral, joyful perfumes. A woman who is aware of her own sexuality, for example, will choose stronger powerful fragrances, which attract attention. And the examples can go on.

What is your advice when choosing the right perfume?

Aromele L’Artisan Parfumeur evocă locuri sau stări sufleteşti. Cât este de important, în opinia ta, să alegi arome potrivite pentru căminul tău?

The L’Artisan Parfumeur fragrances evoke places or frames of mind. In your opinion, how important is it to choose the right fragrances for your home?

Crezi că lumânările parfumate şi deodorantele pentru casă au o influenţă asupra stării noastre de spirit?

Do you believe that scented candles and room sprays have an influence upon our state of mind?

Parfumul potrivit trebuie ales în funcţie de personalitatea noastră, de momentul în care îl folosim. Vara spre exemplu, este indicat să alegem parfumuri uşoare, fructate, florale. De asemenea, trebuie să alegem parfumul în funcţie de aromele preferate, nu în funcţie de trend sau brand.

The right perfume should be picked according to our personality and the time of year we intend to use it. In the summer, for instance, it is recommended to wear light, fruity and floral perfumes. At the same time, we should choose the perfume in relation to our favourite fragrances, not the trend or the brand.

Cred că este foarte important să ne simţim bine acasă şi să ne facem căminul cât mai confortabil. De aceea este indicat să ne înfrumuseţăm căminul cu ajutorul lumânărilor parfumate, creând astfel o atmosferă plăcută prin miresme frumoase.

I believe it’s very important to feel good at home and also to make our homes as comfortable as possible. That is why it is indicated to embellish our home places with the help of scented candles, thus creating a pleasant atmosphere through attractive fragrances.

Da, cred cu tărie asta şi cred că nu ar trebui să ne lipsească din casă aromele. Ele pot crea o atmosferă plăcută, ne pot ajuta să ne relaxăm. Se simte o energie pozitivă în casele “aromate”.

Care sunt criteriile tale atunci când îţi alegi un parfum?

Eu aleg un parfum în funcţie de aromele mele preferate şi de momentul în care îl port.

I do, I strongly believe that and I also think that fragrances should not be missing from our houses. They could create a pleasant atmosphere and help us relax. Mai nou, prefer parfumurile cu note de piper. Sunt preferatele mele! Cel mai mult iubesc la job-ul meu posibilitatea de a interacţiona cu oamenii. Sunt o fire sociabilă, îmi place să cunosc oameni noi, să călătoresc, să am parte de experienţe frumoase şi inedite. Ca această vizită în România, spre exemplu.

Care este parfumul tău preferat? Unul care te inspiră. Parfumul meu preferat este Nuit de Tubéreuse, îmi dă o stare de bine. Când îl port, mă gândesc la nopţile luminoase din Paris.

Care este prima aromă de care îţi aminteşti din copilărie?

Prima amintire “aromată” a mea este mirosul de vanilie din bucătăria mamei.

I recently prefer the perfumes with pepper note. They are my favourite! I love most the fact that I have the possibility to interact with people. I am a sociable person, I like meeting new people, travelling, experiencing nice and new adventures. Just as this visit to Romania, for instance.

What is your favourite perfume? One that is inspiring. My favourite perfume is Nuit de Tubéreuse, it gives me a peaceful state of mind. When I wear it, I am thinking about the glowing nights in Paris.

What is the first fragrance you remember from childhood?

The first ‘flavoured’ memory is the smell of vanilla coming from my mother’s kitchen.

JOGGING frumuseţe și sănătate pentru corp for a beautiful and healthy body LUISA ENE Exerciţiile fizice sunt aliatul unei siluete suple, frumoase şi se spune că dieta nu are efect fără exerciţii fizice. Jogging-ul reprezintă unul dintre cele mai eficiente moduri de tonifiere a corpului şi de scădere în greutate, fiind accesibil tuturor celor care doresc să piardă un număr serios de kilograme, să se tonifieze sau doar să îşi menţină greutatea corporală ideală. Tot mai multe persoane optează pentru acest tip de exerciţiu fizic datorită numeroaselor avantaje pe care le prezintă. Însă ceea ce face din jogging instrumentul unei siluete de vis este faptul că, practicat ușor, fără a depune prea mult efort, el duce la pierderea a până la opt calorii pe minut.

Pe lângă efectele pozitive pe care le are asupra inimii, plămânilor, circulației sanguine şi psihicului, jogging-ul este de neîntrecut atunci când vorbim despre slăbire. În ceea ce privește echipamentul, ai nevoie de o pereche de pantofi sport şi de o vestimentație lejeră, de preferat din bumbac, adecvată condițiilor meteo de afară. Înainte de a pleca la drum, sunt necesare câteva exerciții de încălzire, genoflexiuni, rotiri de trunchi sau

de membre şi alergări uşoare. Se începe cu viteză scăzută, aceasta urmând a fi crescută treptat. Pentru începători nu sunt recomandate mai mult de 15 minute în primele zile, pentru evitarea febrei musculare sau a întinderii ligamentelor. Pentru a obţine un trup de vis, secretul stă în constanţa activităţii fizice, nu în forţare; pornind cu un număr crescut de minute de jogging sau impunânduvă un ritm peste măsura puterilor d-voastră, tot ceea ce veţi obţine va fi oboseală, stres şi crampe musculare. Executat corect, jogging-ul oferă numeroase avantaje şi o siluetă de invidiat. Aşadar, la munte, la mare, pe nisip, pe iarbă ori ciment - alergaţi!

Jumătate de secol mai târziu lucrurile par să se schimbe. De ce nu mai punem profitul pe primul plan și care este locul CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) în modelul business-ului de secol XXI?

In the’70s, when you said ‘business’ you automatically meant profit. Half a century later, things seem to be changing. Why profit isn’t the first priority anymore and what is the place of CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) within the 21st century business model?

Chiar dacă la prima vedere nu pare chiar așa, CSR este un concept cu substanţă economică. “O cheltuială în plus” ar spune cei mai mulţi dintre economişti. Însă, la o privire mai atentă, lucrurile nu stau chiar aşa pentru că implicarea companiei în societate trebuie gândită în strânsă legătură cu ideea de reputaţie care, poate fi cuantificată pe termen lung, aşa cum arată studiile de specialitate. Cel mai nou raport Global CSR RepTrak 100, realizat de specialişti din cadrul Reputation Institute, arată că 73% dintre consumatorii globali intervievaţi ar recomanda şi ar alege mai degrabă serviciile unei companii care este responsabilă social. CSR nu este o cheltuială inutilă, ci este o investiție pe termen lung care trebuie să se întoarcă în companie. Pe scurt, o companie responsabilă are grijă de comunitatea în care își desfășoară activitatea pentru ca această comunitate să poată să îi ofere forță de muncă pentru cât mai mult timp și să poată să îi cumpere produsele sau serviciile pe termen lung. Astfel, dacă societatea este prosperă și compania este prosperă. Se vorbește de ani buni, în România, despre responsabilitatea socială a companiilor. Unii dintre noi o văd ca pe un “blestem” și se întreabă de ce oare s-a abătut tocmai peste corporații.

Even though, at first glance, things seem to be different, CSR is an economy-related concept. “One more expense” would say most of the economists. However, at a closer look, things are not exactly what they seem, because the involvement of the company in the society must be planned in tight connection with the idea of reputation, which can be quantified on longer-term, as studies reveal. The latest Global CSR RepTrak 100 report, drafted by specialists from Reputation Institute, shows that 73% of the global consumers interviewed would recommend and would rather choose the services of a socially responsible company. CSR is not a useless expense, but a long-term investment which has to revert back to the company. In short, a socially responsible company takes care of the community where it carries out its activities so that the respective community would be able to provide the company with labour force for a long time and be able to buy its products and services for as much time as possible. Therefore, a thriving society triggers a thriving company! For many years, people in Romania have been talking about the companies’ social responsibility. Some of us see this as a

Pentru că ideea de responsabilitate a fost asociată din cele mai vechi timpuri cu puterea. Amintiți-vă care era cea mai importantă instituție în stat în Evul Mediu… Biserica, și care erau responsabilitățile ei în raport cu societatea. Amintiți-vă de rolul statului odată cu apariția națiunii și gândiți-vă apoi care sunt cele mai importante instituții din lume după începutul Globalizării… Corporațiile. “Blestemul” s-a abătut de-a lungul timpului asupra tuturor sectoarelor, iar acum este momentul sectorului privat. În acest moment, statul are rol de arbitru și de protector al societății civile. El trebuie să legitimeze acti vitatea companiilor în funcție de binele comun, iar societatea civilă este cea care are responsabilitatea să tragă semnale de alarmă atunci când unul dintre celelalte două sectoare nu își îndeplinește obligațiile. Pentru ca mediul privat să poată să funcționeze în societate trebuie să câștige încrederea acesteia, iar încrederea nu se câștigă numai dacă îți plătești impozitele la stat, dacă îți plătești angajații la timp sau dacă nu eşti implicat în scanda luri răsunătoare, ci dacă ceilalți (societatea) știu că se pot baza pe tine.

Remember the role of the state once the nations were born and think about the most important institutions in the world following the start of globalisation...corporations. ‘The curse’ came over time upon all sectors and now the time of private sector has come. At present, the state plays the role of the moderator and protector of civil society. The state must legitimize the companies’ activities according to the common good and the civil society is the one which has the responsibility to ring the alarm when one of the other two sectors does not fulfill its obligations. In order for the private sector to properly function within society, it must win the trust of the latter and the trust is won not only if you pay the necessary taxes, if you pay your employees on time or if the company is not involved in major scandals, but also if the others (society) know they can rely on you.

ANDREEA PER Aţi devenit antreprenori destul de devreme în viaţa voastră profesională. De ce v-aţi hotărât să lucraţi pentru propria voastră afacere, imediat după absolvire?

Andrei: După ce am lucrat la Bouygues UK în timpul practicii universitare, mi-am dat seama că viaţa profesională înseamnă mult mai mult decât un job de la 9 la 5. Astfel, mi-a venit ideea de a-mi crea propria afacere, dar nu ştiam cum să încep. Într-o zi, m-a sunat Răzvan şi mi-a spus că are o idee de afacere grozavă şi că trebuie să ne întâlnim şi să discutăm imediat. Am discutat timp de 7 ore, iar totul a culminat cu schiţarea unui mic model de afacere. Am ştiut că acel moment fusese un punct de cotitură în viaţa mea şi că, în final, voi avea propria afacere. Răzvan: Pasiunea este cea care te determină să te scoli din pat dimineaţa şi să dai 110 la sută din tot ce ai mai bun. You became entrepreneurs very early in your professional life. Why working for your own startup immediately after graduation?

Andrei: After working at Bouygues UK during my university placement, I realised that there was more to working life than a 9to5 job. Coming back to university, I had the idea of opening my own business but didn’t know where to begin with. One day, Razvan called me and told me he had this great business idea and that we should meet up and discuss it immediately. We ended up talking for around 7 hours that night and concluded a small business model. That day was a turning point in my professional life. Hopefully it was a turn for the better. Răzvan: Your passion is what makes you want to jump out of bed in the morning and give 110 percent of yourself. I have always dreamed of creating a product or service that will make someone’s life easier and Backers Club solves a real problem for investors and entrepreneurs. Moreover, working for my own startup gives me boundless energy and makes me feel fulfilled and content.

What do you think are the advantages of working for your own startup?

There are many advantages but to answer this shortly, you will always have more drive and passion working for your own company as opposed to working for someone else thus thriving and putting more long hours at work because in the end, you do it for yourself.

How did you end up founding Backers Club?

We started looking for a fast and reliable funding source for one of our business ideas. We wanted a simple way to connect investors and entrepreneurs without going through long applications and preliminary sorting. After searching the world wide web we realized such a website did not exist. This gap in the market led to the creation of Backers Club (www.backersclub.com).

Economia sustenabilă este unul dintre acele concepte care cunoaşte modificări continue, naşte dezbateri ample şi controverse, dar care se menţine în atenţia analiştilor, oamenilor de afaceri , societăţii civile şi revine an de an cu noi valenţe. Deşi mai vizibil în statele cu economii dezvoltate pe plan mondial (USA, China, Orientul Mijlociu, ţările nordice etc.), paradoxal, conceptul de “economie sustenabilă” este tot mai prezent în ţările subdezvoltate ale continentului african, unde acuta lipsă de resurse împinge societatea spre o schimbare majoră. Economia sustenabilă nu este şi nu se doreşte a fi o economie alternativă a formei actuale, ci o nouă abordare, o reformă economică, un nou stil de viaţă, care diversifică oportunităţile de dezvoltare economică şi de reducere a sărăciei prin protejarea şi refacerea capitalului natural al pământului. O lume în care oamenii trăiesc în armonie cu capacitatea pământului de a ne proteja, este o lume sustenabilă. Business-ul sustenabil este formă de afacere care contribuie la contruirea unei economii dinamice, eficiente, echitabile şi responsabile, într-un cuvânt sustenabile. Acesta oferă produse şi servicii care întâmpină nevoile societăţii, contribuind pe termen lung la starea de bine a populaţiei. Un produs sau serviciu care nu răspunde simultan şi unei nevoi sociale şi ecolog-

We are constantly besieged by information, ideas, concepts, which more often than not surpass our capacity of real-time processing, in a complete, correct and efficient manner. Sustainable economy is one of these concepts which witnesses permanent changes, gives birth to heated debates and controversies, but which manages to hold the attention of analysts, business people, civil society, year after year coming back with new characteristics. Paradoxically, although more visible in the most developed economies in the world (USA, China, Middle East, Scandinavia also), the term of ‘sustainable economy’ is increasingly present in the underdeveloped African countries, where the acute lack of resources pushes the society towards a major change. Sustainable economy is not and does not claim to be an alternative economy to the current one, but a new approach, an economic reform, a new lifestyle, which diversifies the opportunities of economic development and poverty reduction through protection and recovery of the Earth’s natural capital. A world in which people live in harmony with the Earth’s capacity to protect them is a sustainable world. A sustainable business is a type of business that contributes to building a dynamic, efficient, fair and responsible economy, that is – in one word – sustainable. This offers products and services which meet the society’s needs, contributing to the welfare of people on a longer-term. A product or a service which

The most difficult challenge the sustainable businesses have to face is the increased capacity of accountability. Short-term accountability translates into a profit reduction, but at the same time, into a long-term increase in product’s value. The intrinsic value of the sustainable business, product or service is provided precisely by its social and ecological impact. The engine of accountability, but also the most important and direct beneficiaries of a sustainable economy, are the education and the healthcare of people. We already know that sustainable businesses cover the entire structure of today’s economic

De-a lungul secolelor, societatea a opus rezistenţă la schimbare, generată de refuzul colectivităţii de a ieşi din “starea de confort”prezentă, a acelui moment. Dar, cu fiecare etapă istorică şi socială, schimbarea s-a impus limitărilor vremii, demonstrându-şi necesitatea. Trendurile organizaţionale şi culturale în favoarea “business-ului tradiţional”, teama de a compromite calitatea produselor şi eficienţa producţiei prin schimbare , complexitatea analizei impactului de mediu asupra ciclului de viaţă al produsului, un sistem inadecvat de evaluare a mediului sunt doar câteva bariere economice şi limitări pe care şi România trebuie să le înlăture pentru a transforma în oportunitate această nevoie de schimbare mondială .IRDS - Institutul Român pentru Dezvoltare Sustenabilă operează cu una din cele mai complete definiții ale conceptului de sustenabilitate: Astfel, Dezvoltarea Sustenabilă este definită de IRDS ca un proces complex de creștere economică, dinamică și integrativă, bazată pe cunoaștere, pe resurse regenerabile și reutilizabile, într-o societate sigură, echitabilă și incluzivă, într-un mediu inconjurător protejat și regenerat. Acest tip de dezvoltare socio-economică, responsabilă, a indivizilor și comunităților umane nu mai este deja o opțiune ci putem spune că este... singura opțiune.

The sustainable technologies, named nowadays ‘clean technologies’ or ‘green technologies’ improve the companies’ financial performances, as the technological process of creating the products uses less energy and classic resources and produces less and less waste and toxic elements. Over centuries, society has opposed change, which was generated by the collective mass’ refusal of exiting the current ‘comfort zone’ of those times. But, with any historical and social phase, change has imposed over the times’ limitations, proving itself necessary. The organisational and cultural trends favouring the ‘traditional business’, the fear of compromising the products’ quality and the production efficiency through the change, the complexity of the environmental impact assessment upon the product’s life cycle, an inappropriate system of assessing the environment are just a few of the economic obstacles and limitations, which also Romania needs to overcome, in order to transform this global need for change into an opportunity. IRDS - Romanian Institute for Sustainable Development operates with one of the most complex definitions of sustainability concept: thus, sustainable development is defined by the IRDS as a complex process of economic, dynamic and integrative growth, based on knowledge, renewable and reusable resources, in a safe, fair and inclusive society, in a protected and regenerated environment. This type of responsible socio-economical development of people and communities is not an option anymore, as we could very well say that it remains... the only option.

„Este o meserie frumoasă și foarte solicitantă, însă nu toată lumea este făcută pentru asta” Diana Nistor, flight attendant:

It is a beautiful job, but it is also a difficult one and not everyone can do it ANA TEPȘANU Diana Nistor este însoțitoare de bord și șefă de cabină în cadrul companiei Blue Air, iar de aproape 10 ani a întâmpinat cu zâmbetul pe buze mii de pasageri. A luat parte la înființarea primului operator de zbor privat din România, și speră că prin activitatea ei a reușit să aducă un aport la tot ceea ce înseamnă astăzi Blue Air, respectiv unul dintre brandurile românești de renume. Recunoaște că iubește această meserie și, mai ales, că nu-și imaginează viața fără să zboare. “Știu, sună a clișeu, dar de mică mi-am dorit să fac asta. Vedeam stewardese, îmi plăceau uniformele, mă fascina că aveau șansa să se plimbe în locuri diverse și îmi doream să fac și eu asta. La 18 ani m-am hotărât să fac școala în această direcția, dar toată lumea mi-a spus că e greu și că n-am să ajung acolo. Am renunțat la idee atunci.” S-a înscris totuși câțiva ani mai târziu, în 2004, la cursurile Școlii Superioare de Aviație Civilă, când era în penultimul an la Facultatea de Man-

agement Turistic și Comercial, și așa a început aventura vieții sale: “Am terminat facultatea și mi-am dat seama că nu era ceea ce-mi doream, așa că mi-am întors atenția spre pasiunea din adolescență, respectiv aviația. Nimic nu mi-a mai stat în cale și am depus toate eforturile necesare pentru a-mi împlini visul”.

N-AM ȘTIUT CĂ ACEASTĂ MESERIE ARE O AȘA MARE RESPONSABLITATE

Povestea unui însoțitor de zbor are startul la Școala Superioară de Aviație. Însă, înainte să începi școala trebuie să fi apt din punct de vedere medical și să dai un examen de admitere care constă în două probe: geografie și limbă străină. Școala de însoțitor de zbor durează două luni, ne spune Diana, timp în care înveți proceduri de urgență, geografie, engleză, medicină; să nu uităm de faptul că trebuie să știi să înoți ☺. Principalul obiectiv al meseriei de însoțitor de zbor este strict legat de siguranța

și protecția pasagerilor. “Este o meserie frumoasă și foarte solicitantă. Nu toată lumea e făcută pentru a fi însoțitor de zbor. N-am știut că trebuie să învăț atât de mult și că această meserie are o așa mare responsabilitate”, a spus Diana. Într-o zi obișnuită de muncă, ca șef de cabină, Diana ajunge la briefing în aeroport și preia documentele necesare cursei. În clipa în care pășește în avion, Diana are un check list, unde verifică toate echipamentele, astfel încât cursa să decurgă fără nicio problemă, iar pasagerii să fie în siguranță. Fiecare membru al echipajului este instruit de Diana cu ce are de făcut exact în timpul zborului. Întrebată cum reușește să împace viața de familie și prietenii cu munca, șefa de cabină a spus: “Trebuie să le împac pe toate, nu am de ales. În general, compania Blue Air nu are zboruri cu rămânere la destinație, drept urmare, după fiecare cursă revin acasă. Este mai bine așa pentru mine deoarece pot să

Diana is a flight attendant and a cabin service manager for Blue Air, and for almost 10 years she has been greeting thousands of passengers with a smile on her face. She took part at the creation of the first private carrier in Romania and she hopes that through her activity she also influenced the development of the airline into the renowned Romanian brand that it is today. She admits that she loves her job so much that she cannot imagine life without flying. ‘I know, seems like a cliché, but since I was just a little girl I have wanted to do this. I used to watch the flight attendants, I liked that they were wearing uniforms, that they had the chance to travel and I wanted to do this as well. At 18 I decided to enroll to a special school in this field, but everybody told me it was difficult and that I would not be able to get there. I gave up on the idea, for while.” In the end, a few years later, in 2004, she enrolled with the Avia-

tion Academy during her last year of university (she was studying Hospitality Management) and the adventure of her life began: “ After finishing university I realized this was not what I wanted to do with my life, so I returned to my first passion, aviation. Nothing stood in my way anymore and I did everything in my power to fulfill my dream.”

In order to be a flight attendant, the story begins with the Superior Aviation School. However, before starting school you need to have first-aid knowledge and take an admission examination, which implies two subjects: geography and a foreign language. The school lasts for two months, during which you learn emergency procedures, geography, English, medicine; not to forget the fact that you need to be able to swim. ☺ ‘It’s a beautiful and difficult job. I love

Întotdeauna am făcut tot ce mi-a stat în putere pen tru a-mi îmbunătăți constant modul de lucru în cadrul zborului. Acesta e felul meu de a răsplăti managementul companiei pentru toată încrederea și sprijinul acordat în toți acești ani.”, a concluzionat Diana.

everything about it. Not everybody is cut out to be a flight attendant. I did not know I had to study so much and that this job implies so much responsibility” said Diana. For a usual day at work, as a cabin service manager, Diana arrives at the airport briefing and takes all the documents that are necessary for the flight scheduled. The moment she gets in the plane, she has a checklist and she needs to make sure that all equipment is in order and that the flight will be smooth and the passengers secure. Diana instructs each crew member on what they have to do during the flight. Asked how she succeeds in balancing the family life and friends with her professional life, the cabin chief answered: ‘I have to balance them, I cannot do it otherwise. I am travelling on all company’s routes, but we do not stay there overnight: I go, I fly and I come back home. This is something I am happy about since I can easily come back home to my kid every night. As regards my friends, I have many working in the aviation sector especially because we have the same schedule and we spend so much time together.’ “At Blue Air I have close to me a young, decisive and ambitious team, and this means a whole lot to me, because it fits my personality like a glove. I always did every thing that was in my power to develop my skills and my style of working during a flight. This is my way of giving back to the management of the company for all the support and faith they have given me in this past years” concluded Diana.

Continuăm seria de articole despre avioane care au făcut istorie, cu o aeronavă britanică, dar care în timp, a devenit mândrie naţională pentru români. We continue our series on planes that made history with a British model aircraft that became a reason of national pride in Romania

Modelul de avion BAC 1-11, a cărui denumire vine de la British Aircraft Corporation One-Eleven, a fost proiectat şi construit în Marea Britanie a anilor ‘60 şi, timp de peste 20 de ani, a fost unul dintre cele mai populare avioane care brăzda cerul Europei, dar mai ales pe cel al Statelor Unite. Multe dintre avioanele fabricate de englezi au fost cumpărate de americani, aceştia având atunci o piaţă mult mai lucrativă şi dezvoltată în ceea ce priveşte zborurile interne. De asemenea, avionul BAC 1-11 a fost printre cele mai de succes modele de avioane de pasageri cu reacţie produse vreodată în Marea Britanie. Declinul acestora a început în anii ‘90, odată cu noile reglementări europene în ceea ce priveşte poluarea fonică produsă de aeronave. Avioanele BAC 1-11 erau sigure, confortabile şi profitabile, dar în acelaşi timp erau şi foarte gălăgioase.

The BAC 1-11 plane model, whose name comes from British Aircraft Corporation One-Eleven, was designed and built in the United Kingdom in the’60s and for over 20 years it has been one of the most popular planes on the European and especially American skies. Many of the British-made planes have been bought by the Americans, who at the time, had a more lucrative and developed market in terms of domestic flights. At the same time, BAC 1-11 was among the most successful passenger jet aircrafts ever built in the UK. Their decline started in the’90s, with the new European regulations regarding the noise pollution produced by aircrafts. The BAC 1-11 planes were safe, comfortable and profitable, but, at the same time, they were very noisy.

care se obliga să producă şi să livreze 22 de avioane. Primul model BAC 1-11 construit în România, denumit ROMBAC 1-11, şi-a luat zborul pe 18 septembrie. Producţia a continuat până în 1989, dar într-un ritm mult mai lent decât cel prevăzut în contract. Până la Revoluţie, Fabrica de Avioane București, actuala Romaero Băneasa, a construit 9 astfel de avioane, ROMBAC fiind singurul avion comercial cu reacție din Europa comunistă, exceptând, bineînţeles, URSS-ul. Primul zbor intern efectuat pe un avion ROMBAC 1-11 a avut loc pe 28 ianuarie 1983, pe ruta Bucureşti – Timişoara, urmând ca pe 23 martie 1983 să fie efectuat şi primul zbor pe o rută externă: Bucureşti – Londra. O performanţă de care putem fi mândri este că avioanele româneşti deţin un record cu care puţine alte modele de avioane se pot lăuda: ROMBAC 1-11 a fost printre cele mai sigure avioane din lume. Niciunul din avionele construite în România nu s-a prăbușit. Din păcate, după căderea comunismului, în România nu s-a mai produs niciun model ROMBAC 1-11.

The production carried out until 1989, but at a much slower pace than the one stipulated under the agreement. Until the Revolution, the Plane Factory in Bucharest, the present Romaero Băneasa, built 9 such planes, ROMBAC being the only jet commercial aircraft in communist Europe, except for the USSR, of course. The first domestic flight with a ROMBAC 1-11 plane took place on the 28th of January 1983, on Bucharest – Timisoara route, and on the 23rd of March 1983 the first external flight took place on Bucharest – London route. A success we can be proud of is the fact that the Romanian planes hold a record which few other planes can boast about: ROMBAC 1-11 was among the safest planes in the world. None of the planes built in Romania has ever crashed and no passenger has ever died aboard. Unfortunately, after the fall of communism, Romania ceased the production of any ROMBAC 1-11 plane.
