FROM THE CHAIRPERSON...

Merħba,

With Summer fast approaching we have commenced our expanded Summer 2023 flying program. The seven-month Summer schedule, which runs from 26th March to 28th October, will see the airline operate 155 weekly return direct services to 23 destinations, namely, Amsterdam, Berlin, Brussels, Catania, Dusseldorf, Geneva, Lisbon, London Gatwick, London Heathrow, Lyon, Madrid, Milan, Munich, Naples, Nice, Palermo, Paris Charles De Gaulle, Paris Orly, Prague, Rome, Tel Aviv, Vienna, and Zurich.

This Summer, we have added 5 new d estinations, with first-timeever Air Malta flights to Naples and to Nice, and in addition, we will be returning to the popular destinations of Lisbon, Palermo and Tel Aviv.

I am pleased to announce that Air Malta Summer bookings are already indicative of an extremely busy summer ahead. We encourage all our customers to allow themselves plenty of time to navigate airport security and processing queues. Where possible, customers should avail of selecting their pre-assigned seats in advance and checking in on-line. The Air Malta ‘Go First’ product which includes seat selection and priority boarding may well be a useful travel addition for many.

Air Malta’s fifth new Airbus A320neo joins the fleet this month. The Airbus 320neo 9H – NEE replaces the A320ceo 9H -AEQ, another step in the airline’s fleet renewal project. This transition of the full fleet from the older A320ceo to the greener A320neo means the airline will operate a unified younger fleet, consisting of the most modern and fuel-efficient single-aisle aircraft in the world. As a committed IATA member airline we are working towards reaching net zero emissions by 2050.

In addition, Air Malta is pleased to announce that the 9H-NEE has been delivered with a new modern livery. This more cost-effective livery picks up from the colours and elements of the Maltese flag making it instantly recognisable as the national airline of the Maltese Islands.

Throughout the year we will be implementing further updates to continuousl y improve our customer experience, with the intent to be a safe, respected and trusted airline of choice offering enjoyable economy and premium value-for-money flights for both inbound and outbound travellers.

For more information about Air Malta and our flight schedules please visit www.airmalta.com and w ww.facebook.com/AirMalta and join our newsletter mailing list to receive offers directly in your inbox. We regularly introduce exciting promotional offers and you need to be registered to our newsletter to be able to get notice of our promotions.

I hope you have a great flight!

Thank you for choosing Air Malta. We look forward to seeing you abroad another one of our flights soon.

FROM THE EDITOR...

Dear travellers,

Welcome to the magical spring season, where everything changes, fro m new buds, to new fashions, new hope and the countdown to summer.

This month we take you to Palermo – a new direct route for Air Malta - and give you some ideas of where to be entertained. Locally, the opera season continues and we focus on an Easter event to raise funds for the university’s research arm, the RIDT, and meet a young man casting his spell on audiences near and far.

There’s more music in this issue – read Desi Campbell’s amazing journey and hear Shaun Farrugia’s new EP too.

With International Book Day coming up, we wanted to share some bestselli ng local authors with you in case you forgot your book at home or want to take a different type of souvenir back with you. Book addicts should visit the National Library - it is stunning, indeed, mind-blowing, to see the fractio n of books in the main reading room.

And if musty and dusty is your thing, take a visit to the Birgu Flea Market on a Sunday and pick up some treasures; we share some local’s finds with you.

Blow away your Winter blues with the Malta International Fireworks Festival which lights up the night skies between 24th and 30th April, or paddle your way around the nooks and crannies of the islands in a kayak by day.

The cultural calendar is rich with events; art, crafts and music are all in full flow and we have listings of where to satiate your appetite for local and international foods too; the Maltese hate for anyone to be hungry…

All in all, we hope to inform and entertain you on this flight, and entice you on another Air Malta flight soon.

MELLIEHA A MYRIAD OF WONDERFUL SIGHTS, VIEWPOINTS, PLACES TO VISIT AND EASY WALKS

COMING UP THE STEEP HILL FROM XEMXIJA BAY IT’S EASY TO MISS MELLIEĦA ALTOGETHER IF ONE STAYS ON THE MAIN ROAD TO GOZO. BUT WHAT TREASURES AWAIT IF, INSTEAD, ONE TAKES THE ROAD INTO THE VILLAGE.

Where to start? At Selmun it is possible to park the car and wander down through the lush greenery to Mġiebah Bay, once popular for skinny dipping, now fun for families looking for quiet bays. Back up to the main road into the village, a stop for a pie or two and delicious coffee at Fred’s on the main road makes a change from the traditional pastizzi that we are used to, which are also available at many places in Mellieħa. On from there through the village and it is a veritable shopper’s delight. Such a selection! Food shops, boutiques, household goods, souvenirs, even a bustling hair saloncum-spa in the same Schere Complex, as well as a barber shop, nail technicians with a café next door for further nourishment.

All this and we are still at the top of the hill! A walk down to the Sanctuary is a must, although it is only open at certain times. This Sanctuary originated as a natural cave which was consecrated as

a Roman Catholic Church later. The Church’s altarpiece depicts the Virgin Mary with Jesus on her right arm and is a Byzantinestyle Fresco which is believed to date back to the late 12th century. Well acclaimed eateries are situated close by and are open all year round, with Commando being Bib Gourmand recommended.

It is difficult to say which season is best but, at every time of the year, the views are spectacular and even more so when one walks up to the main Parish Church. This imposing, 19th century church is just around the corner from the Sanctuary and takes pride of place in the main Village square. The feast day in honour of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary is on the 8th of September, although celebrations start earlier and there is usually a magnificent firework display in the evening. The main square is a meeting place for locals but if one really wants to enjoy the fabulous views overlooking the main

Mellieħa Bay one must pay a visit to the Sea View Café which is strategically placed on the cliff edge. It is always open for drinks and snacks and is an ideal place for a rest and taking photos.

Onwards, down the main hill towards the sandy bea ch which is very popular with young and old alike! It is perfect for families with little ones because the sand stretches out for a good distance without gettin g too deep and is therefore safe for little swimmers. Deck chairs and sunshades are available for rent throughout the bay, and snack bars/restaurants and ice-cream stalls beckon.

But we are not done with the sights – St Agatha’s Tower, familiarly known as The Red Tower, is clearly visible on the crest of the Marfa Ridge and overlooks Mellieħa Bay. The bird sanctuary and

the nature reserve has commanding views of the strait between Malta, Comino and Gozo. It is said that it contained a chapel and altar dedicated to Saint Agatha who was a Christian Martyr, who was venerated as a symbol of strength against invasion and the plague in both Sicily and Malta. Later it became known as the Red Tower because it was painted red, possibly to help sentinels in Naxxar and Mdina to recognise it easily.

However, it is also possible that it earned its name from the colour of the stone from which it was constructed, which is reddish. This tower, together with the W hite Tower at l-Aħrax talMellieħa, which was built out of very white stone, are both heritage sites managed by Din l-Art Ħelwa and are open to visitors.

There is so much to see and enjoy in Mellieħa – a place for all seasons.

THE TOWERING LEGACY LEFT BY J.P. LASCARIS OF CASTELLAR

Jean Paul Lascaris (1560-1657), Grand Master of Malta from 1636 to 1657, was a deeply religious and upright person and a great achiever, whose austere appearance till today has left an expression in the Maltese language: "wiċċ ta’ Lascaris" which describes a person with a severe face!

Lascaris was born in the small village of Castellar in the French Maritime Alps which produced at least 30 Knights to the Order of Malta. The knights played an important role in the great battles of this era and Grand Master Lascaris withstood and ruled during the famine of 1647/48, established an important library in Malta, purchased the Caribbean Island of St Christopher, donated a galley to the impressive Maltese fleet and devised an early warning system by building 10 coastal towers including Lippija, Għajn Tuffieħa, Nadur and Żurrieq Sciuta towers.

Others were built between 1640 and 1652 from a different design, most likely by resident military architects, and included the towers of Saint Agatha's, Xlendi, Dwejra, and Saint George's Towers. Another one had also been in Mġarr called Blat Mogħża, which unfortunately disappeared permanently from the cliffside in 1730.

The sites of the towers were decided by the Council of the Order and administered by a body called the Congregation for Fortification and War, whose main function was to deter attacks from pirates or, like in 1614, from Kalil Pasha landing with 5000 men.

The towers were funded by the Order under the administration of the Congregation for Fortification and Warfare, and the salaries of the guards or bombers paid by the University of Mdina. The maintenance and upkeep of the watchtowers was also their responsibility.

Access to the upper part of the towers was by means of a ladder that was taken away once the Guardian was installed. A vigil was carried out day and night, and the minute an enemy ship was sighted, a rider on horseback would inform the nearest village. Each tower received a resident guard or bombardier and 3 artillery men, chosen from among the Dejma militia, paid 2.5 and 2 crowns respectively.

The goal was for warning messages to reach Valletta. The guards or bombardiers were mostly illiterate, so they were not required to make any written reports. When an enemy was seen, the Guardians had various rules to follow. During the night they fired one cannon or lit a firecracker rocket (fireworks), and during the day, a smoke signal was required. If they saw that the enemy was about to land, they were to hoist the Order's flag up.

HOME TO A WORLD-RENOWNED OPERA H OUSE, BOTANICAL GARDENS, PUPPET THEATRES, STREET FOOD AND ITS BACK STREET BOUTIQUES; THERE IS SOMETHING TO SATISFY ALL YOUR SENSES IN PALERMO.

SEE

As part of a world tour, NORMA by Vincenzo Bellini returns to Teatro Massimo from the 16th to 23rd April, directed by Ugo Giacomazzi and Luigi Di Gangi, and staged in co-production with the Arena Sferisterio of Macerata.

Visit some of the city's many art galleries and museums, with c hoices from the contemporary art at Villa Igiea, to the modern works at Galleria d'arte Moderna di Palazzo Riso. You must also visit the Palazzina Cinese and fathom out the incredible dumb waiter.

HEAR

You can’t miss the Politeama Garibaldi. Inaugurated in 1874, even though it was without a roof at the time, the horseshoeshaped hall has a capacity of 5,000 spectators, a double row of boxes and a gallery divided into two orders, and an entrance characterised by a triumphal neoclassical arch. A ‘politeama’ is used to describe a theatre in which shows of various kinds take place; but today this ‘politeama’ is the headquarters of the

Sicilian Symphony Orchestra who have weekly performances, from which, throughout the month of April, you can hear:

• Omaggio a ligeti nel centenario della nascita

• Ciclo cross over e opera n. 3 - il flauto magico

• Omaggio a poulenc

SMELL

Stay with me. Drive through the pine lined street from the city of Palermo to the seaside resort of Mondello. It is definitely worth hiring a car for this alone. The resort takes you back to the Liberty period with covetable villa after villa – and the pièce de la rèsistance is the Art Nouveau pier with changing huts. It's sweet to see people continuing the traditions of times past. Promenade along the beach and take in the sea air and perhaps stop for a gelato or Aperitivo - ‘The Hugo’ is all the rage.

TOUCH

Whilst I could take you around the boutiques in the backstreets

at this point, I’m going to keep you entertained with more theatres.

The Teatro Biondo Stabile houses contemporary theatre, music and dance, but my personal favourite, is the opera dei pupi at the Antonio Pas qualino International Puppet Museum near Piazza Marina. The museum is home to puppets from all over the world, with shows being performed too. You can also have a go with using a puppet from their vast collection. Once you have seen a show, you can wander the flea market which

takes over the streets surrounding the monument in Piazza Marina on a Sunday morning and see examples of puppets an d parts of Sicili an carts for sale.

TASTE

The newest and trendiest place to enjoy an evening is the Observatory – Fine Restaurant and Mixology Rooftop bar. This divinely decorated space overlooks Monte Pellegrino and Castello Utveggio on one side, and the crown of the mountains that border the Conca d'Oro on the other, with a centre view over the roofs of the city, as

well as the Politeama Garibaldi theatre. This rooftop lounge serves an upscale menu with a series of cocktails designed to complement the dishes.

There is also a glut of choices of street food from the likes of the Antica Focacceria of San Francesco. You must try the Pane con la milza / Pani câ meusa, a Sicilian bread with seasoned spleen, or visit a traditional aracineria for some famous Sicilian baked rice - and of course pasta alla Norma, which I believe, takes us full circle.

AN ICONIC HARBOUR HIKEMAKE SURE YOU DO NOT MISS OUT ON THE HIGHLIGHTS OF MĠARR HARBOUR

THERE IS SOMETHING ABOUT ARRIVING ON THE ISLAND OF GOZO THAT HAS INCREDIBLE APPEAL. MAYBE IT’S SAILING INTO MGARR HARBOUR, OR PERHAPS IT’S THE MAJESTIC CHAMBRAY FORT OVERLOOKING THE HARBOUR; MAYBE IT’S THE QUAINT LOURDES CHAPEL ON THE HILLTOP THAT GRACES THE VIEW, OR IT COULD BE SIMPLY THE CASE THAT THE PLACE, HAS RETAINED THE AUTHENTIC FEELING OF LIVING ON AN ISLAND.

Maybe you’ve already been to the island, and M ġ arr harbour was simply the point of arrival and departure. If that’s been the case, you’ve missed a significant landmark on the island of Gozo. One overlooked item on most travellers’ list of things to do in Gozo is a serious exploration of Mġarr ha rbour.

THE FISHING PORT & YACHT MARINA

Mġarr is the fishermen’s place. Today many Gozitan fishermen berth their vessels here, and you can see their fishing boats in the port. From the modern-day schooners to the smaller craft and the traditional luzzus painted in jewel-tone colours, the dock in the harbour is always a picturesque place to visit and capture splendid photos of the water and light reflections. Further in, you’ll also see the mooring decks and pontoons for sailing boats and yachts. Naturally, Gozo’s yacht marina welcomes sailing parties who choose to visit the island while cruising the Mediterranean Sea.

THE HILLTOP LOURDES CHAPEL

Climb up the steep staircase from the port to the quaint chapel on the hilltop. You wil l undoubtedly notice the statue of Our Lady of Lourdes in an alcove on the cliffside. Story has it that back in the 19th cent ury, some twenty years after the Lourdes apparitions in France, an unknown trav eller to the island remarked how the cliff face reminded him of the Lourdes grotto. That was enough to inspire the devout locals to erect a statue and later build the Gothic-style chapel with its poi nted roof and steeple, which now has become a landmark of Mġarr harbour. Taking a selfie while on the promontory outside of the chapel with the background of the port is a must! It’s nothing short of amazing in all sorts of weather and seasons.

THE FORTRESS OF CHAMBRAY

Take a second look at the Chambray fortress. The bastioned fort overlooking Mġarr harbour was originally built to protect the port. There were plans for this fortress to become another citadel or city on the island of Gozo. However, only a few people know that the Gozitans and their livestock took refuge in this fort when the French invaded Malta in 1798. Today it is a private residential gated community, but you can hike in the pine and conifer grove beneath it. The track in the woodland saunters around the fort, leading to a precarious path over the clay slopes to the beach known as Xatt l-Aħmar.

IX-XATT L-AĦMAR

The rugged stretch of the coast beneath the Chambray fortress is a lovely beach perfect for swimming, snorkelling and diving. The zone is a favour ite among divers who enjoy diving ‘wrecks’ as several ships have been scuttled in the area. Diving the wrecks is a must for divers when considering what to do in Gozo. Xatt l-Aħmar is an idyllic spot to be at sunrise. If you love nature and the coast, it should be on your list of things to do while in Gozo. One must take a winding and a rather steep country road to reach the beach. This challenge ensures the place is never really crowded. If you venture to explore the area, you might even come across the fougasse, a large hollow in the ground rock which was meant to be filled with small stones to be fired at the incoming enemy. During the colder seasons, Xatt l-Aħmar is also a scenic spot for picnics and family outings.

Taking a hike around Mġarr and savouring the harbour’s colours and views is a must. It’s not just a picture-perfect location, nor simply the welcome and goodbye view of Gozo. It is one of the best places to capture the essence of the island of Gozo.

THINGS TO DO IN GOZO IF YOU’RE INTERESTED IN THE GOZO WORLD WAR II STORY

GOZO’S STEEPED IN HISTORY, AND WHEN IT COMES TO WORLD WAR II INSPIRATIONS, THE ISLAND OFFERS A VARIETY OF EXCITING AND SIGNIFICANT SITES. SO, IF YOU’RE A WORLD WAR II ENTHUSIAST AND SEEKING MORE PLACES TO VISIT AND THINGS TO DO IN GOZO, REST ASSURED THAT THESE FIVE SPOTS WILL GIVE YOU A FULLER PICTURE OF WHAT GOZO WENT THROU GH IN WORLD WAR II.

UNDERGROUND SHELTERS

Gozo was not only the Gozitans’ home during World War II. It also became home to several thousands of Maltese refugees who left mainland Malta and moved to Gozo. Gozo was not only a safer place to live, but famine was less of a threat too. Despite the hardships, the rural island of Gozo was better off. Gozo’s history books show that between 1941 and 1942, many underground shelters were excavated. While there are many private underground shelters in houses, Gozo has around 170 public shelters too. Shelters were a crucial part of the defence for the civilians as the island of Gozo had nothing to mitigate attacks. These shelters are notoriously found in the villages’ main squares and central points, with interlinking tunnels between them. An extensive shelter complex consisting of 32 rooms and tunnels runs underneath the St Martin demi-bastion at the Citadel. This complex is not open to the public, but make sure you’ve listed the shelter located at the St John’s demi bastion at the Citadel on your list of things to do in Gozo.

BOMBING SITES

In terms of bombings and air raids, Gozo was spared the devastation inflicted on Malta. Malta is considered to have been the most bombed country during World War II. Gozo, on the other hand, had a less harrowing experience. Initially, Gozo was only struck by random bombs dropped by the Italian and German fighter planes seeking to release their load on their flight back home. From 1941 to 1943, Gozo experienced a war rampage through seven major bombings in Victoria, Nadur, Xewkija, Għajnsielem, Xagħra, Għarb and Ta’ Sannat. The worst attack was the bombing in 1942 on the village of Ta’ Sannat. That bombing hit a bakery in the middle of the morning, leaving 18 dead and over 70 injured. The day saw many causalities, and historians consider it a significant catastrophe in Gozo’s modern history. In those days, the island’s hospital was the building that today houses the Ministry for Gozo in Saint Frances’ Square. The

stress and panic lived on the day are visible even in the hospital’s records. If you’re visiting the village of Ta’ Sannat, you can stop by the church, where a plaque, including bomb shrapnel, commemorates those who died in this tragedy. Further uphill, at Xelina Square and in Main Street, where the bombing occurred, one can visit the official memorial on site.

ĠURDAN HILL & XEWKIJA AIRFIELD

Ġurdan Hill is notorious for its lighthouse and scenic views, but few know about this hilltop’s curious role in World War II. In July of 1943, the Allies were focused on the invasion of Sicily. Operation Husky, as it was code-named, saw Ġurdan Hill as the vantage point which housed the radar unit for this manoeuvre. Hike up Ġurdan Hill and think of what the spot meant for those involved. Operation Husky also needed an airfield built on the Ta’ Lambert site in Xewkija. Considered one of the forgotten airfields of Europe, part of the site has become the road leading from Mġarr to Xewkija. Once the Allies gained a foothold in Sicily, the US contingent moved to Sicily’s liberated airfields as they proceeded with the Italian campaign and this airfield was dismantled.

WORLD WAR II MEMORIAL

At It-Tokk or Independence Square, the island’s main square, stop for a coffee, and you will be under the gaze of the Christ the King monument. This memorial, which the late Queen Elizabeth II unveiled, commemorated the Gozitan World War II victims. The monument lists the names of the fallen and has bronze bas-relief engravings representing the navy, infantry, air force and nursing arms.

Undoubtedly, World War II is a valid chapter in Gozo’s history. The landmark points mentioned above can be part of your itinerary of things to do in Gozo. Once your interest is piqued, you might be hungry for more in-depth Gozo history stories. If that’s the case, visit a local bookshop to find enriching books about Malta’s and Gozo’s wartime stories.

OMG IT’S MAGIC!

GWILYM BUGEJA ANNOYED HIS FAMILY AUDIENCE WITH HIS FIRST CARD TRICK AGED 6 – BUT TODAY, HE AMAZES CROWDS WITH HIS REPERTOIRE OF SURPRISES.

“My Dad taught me a card trick when I was a child and I just was so fascinated by it that I kept repeating it. When I saw local illusionist Vanni Pule’ perform, I became completely hooked. By age 12, I was absorbing as much as I could from YouTube videos and spent an unhealthy amount of time practising! I would show my tricks to my school friends and their reactions egged me on to learn more and more and I started to use my humour as part of my performances.

I learned a lot from Vanni, having lessons on different types of illusions and as soon as I felt I had a proper show to give, I started OMG Magic, which today is known for comedy magic shows. I like close-up magic as well as doing intimate events, performing around a table at weddings or corporate events. Of course, I love being on stage too!

Each member of the audience has their own experience – and what I like the most about it all is how they react, especially when

I’m wandering around a venue and free to pick anyone out to mesmerise! This aspect is great when doing shows for children as well, but to give an adult such a feeling of awe, is incredible.

Performing for children is a lot of fun. Whilst I incorporate the same principles, performing to them allows me to unleash my childish, silly side as well. The wide-eyed reactions are a joy to watch, though children can be quite a difficult audience. While they don’t have the logic just yet to understand their own bewilderment, you can see them trying hard to work out what just happened.

The goal with any show is to take the participants on a journey, to have fun, to laugh and to amaze. It’s a build up to an OMG moment!

image for people to marvel at. They have become part of my brand – and as my name is a bit of a tongue twister – it’s good to have this visual reference. I have been asked if they are made for me or magicians – but they are just regular suits. No hidden pockets or extra sleeves. Just lots of colour and character!

A lot goes into a show, yet it’s key to keep your performances fresh and innovative and setting up at a venue takes a lot of time in itself. I enjoy obscure and illogical tricks and try to steer clear of the traditional expectations of a magician. So I haven’t sawn a woman in half… but I love wor king with a Rubik’s Cube; I can do them blindfolded, with one hand and have also created art from them in the past.

I have recently become a member of the Magic Circle, the illustrious organisation for the craft. We have meetings online and in person, and to become a member, you must perform, pass an exam and as well as an interview too. Indeed, this month I am heading up to the UK to do some shows and I have another few lined up for The Netherlands too. My goal is to become a truly international performer. And I must thank my girlfriend who is always amazed when I show her a new segment - or maybe I have cast a spell on her… who knows!

ISLAND HIGHLIGHTS

KWARE Ż IMAL

Kwareżimal is a traditional Maltese sweet pastry that is typically eaten during Lent. The name is derived from the Maltese word "quaresima," which means "Lent." It is made with a mixture of ground almonds, flour, and honey or sugar, along with spices such as cinnamon and nutmeg. The mixture is shaped into small cakes or cookies and baked until golden brown.

MILK THISTLE

A walk in the countryside is perfect to work off some calories; look out for these beauties on your way. The Silybum Marianum, or more commonly, Milk Thistle, grows wild in low soil areas, and can reach up to 200cm in height. It is thought to have medicinal properties for various conditions but is toxic to cattle and sheep.

DIVING

Diving in Malta is another way to immerse yourself in history. Many wrecks are submerged below the water, some placed strategically, remnants from the past, giving divers a whole new side to see of Malta and Gozo. Many registered schools offer trial lessons and rent equipment.

SALUTING BATTERY

The Saluting Battery is a wonderful vantage point to view The Three Cities and The Grand Harbour. These canons are cared for by WirtArtna who curate other properties and places of interest. The canons are fired daily.

EASTER PROCESSIONS

Numerous processions are held around the island; the Three Cities and Żebbug are the most famed. Here, villagers come together to create reenactments in full costume which take place over Easter Sunday.

MIXTA CAVE

This natural cave located on the eastern side of Ramla Bay is very commonly confused with Calypso's Cave which is located on the other side of the same bay. Both are worth a visit and what a great instagram shot!

OFFICES OF TOMORROW

PANGEA is Mizzi Estates’ latest addition to its office space portfolio – and this is no ordinary office block, says General Manager Kevin Muscat. Realising Pangea has been “one whole challenging experience”, he continues on with the aim to create a space that embraces strong green credentials at its core. More than an abstract concept or cliché, the creation of a green environment was seen in both the literal sense, by designing a pleasant and dynamic office environment through in-depth analysis of visual impact and aesthetics, form and function; as well as in the wider context of achieving high environmental performance through the reduction of the buildings carbon footprint and waste, and implementing water conservation technologies. Muscat and director Chris Mizzi share a common ethos in creating best-of-class properties that embrace the key principles of sustainability, efficiency and conservation. “Indeed, our aim is to deliver projects of high standard and quality. However, we always make sure they also make a statement and go a step further – possibly beyond what the market is accustomed to delivering.”

Pangea was no exception to this vision. An engineer by profession, specialised in environmental management, Muscat explains that since the project’s inception and within the early design stages, his in-house team of architects and interior designers, together with leading architectural consultants at Edwin Mintoff Architects, set a design strategy to develop a green building. With this ethos at heart, Mizzi Estates, which forms part of the Mizzi Organisation, undertook what turned out to be the greatest design and engineering feat of this development – the installation of an eight-storey, 25-metre-high natural garden wall, the tallest of its kind on the island. Covering an area of more than 100 square metres, the feature brings the property to life and instills emotions of serenity, calm and peace. “The idea is to take work environments to a whole new level by transforming the notion of being in a mere state of physical presence in a workspace into an experience that is continually stimulating the senses, nurturing creativity and cultivating thoughts,” Muscat says.

The green wall has been installed in a light-well – which in itself is a key feature of the entire office block, flooding each of its

floors with natural light for most parts of the day. Having over 4,000 individual plants, the green wall is equipped with an automatic irrigation system, comprising a series of electromechanical valves, pipes and pumps. The pots have been engineered for the plants to be irrigated by a cascading flow of water behind them, so that each one can absorb just the right amount of water, with any surplus being drained and reused by the rows beneath. “The system is testament to how principles of energy reduction, water conserv ation and reuse and aesthetic beauty may coexist to create a harmonious and comfortable environment,” Muscat maintains.

The garden wall is also aimed at providing a passive means for controlling humidity levels within the building. It has been scientifically proven that exposure to greenery is also related to a reduction in stress and anxiety, with a consequent improvement in well-being and productivity of employees.

B eing aware of the building sector’s contribution to nearly 40 per cent of globa l CO2 emissions, Muscat highlights how he and his project team ensured that all the mechanical and electrical systems installed meet the highest standards and performance ratings. The block is backed-up by two standby generators offering electric power redundancy to all the building’s systems and infrastructure, including air-conditioning units. The building is served by top-of-the-range Otis® elevators, and a fully-fledged, wet fire protection system is installed on all office levels, while each server, electrical and telecoms room have been equipped with gas extinguishing systems.

Through all stages of the process in realizing Pangea, Mizzi Estates valued the importance of having smart installations in its plant and utility areas as much as it valued aesthetics and comfort in the office and recreational spaces.

Offices’ security has been another key element which has been given due importance – which is why Pangea features high-tech CCTV surveillance, intruder alarm, video hall porter, access control and turnstile entry systems.

28 BUSINESS WORDS PANGEA
PANGEA IS THE LATEST CREATION BY MIZZI ESTATES – OFFERING AN EXPERIENCE THAT STIMULATES THE SENSES, NURTURES CREATIVITY AND CULTIVATES THOUGHT.

In addition to passive green initiatives, such as thermal roof insulation and double-glazed apertures – which are becoming standard elements of any development – Muscat points out how substantial investments have been made in a best-ofbreed intelligent lighting control system, heat recovery units and integrated mirror systems with contactless infrared sensor taps and soap dispensers, equipped with high-speed low-energy dryers. “Naturally, opting for high-efficiency, top-of-the-range equipment comes at a price. And one might ask: Why bother bearing a higher capital cost when, ultimately, it is the tenant or client who will be paying utility bills? But we think and behave differently. “Apart from putting our money where our mouth is, our experience from clients who lease other commercial and office space from us, has proven they embrace principles of waste reduction, energy efficiency and conservation – which

is why we want to complement each others’ efforts and share common environmental values with them. “We firmly believe that through each of these initiatives – primarily the remarkable and pioneering natural garden wall – we are doing our part to help pave the way in reducing the carbon footprint of a building, while still maintaining aesthetic value and character in high esteem. “Pangea is about form and function and delivering a comfortable work environment. But our ultimate goal is – and will remain – creating something beautiful,” Muscat says.

PORTRAIT OF AN ARTIST

Born into a large family in Long Island, New York, I am the chronological middle-child of six. My vision and voice are shaped by a boisterous hierarchy of my birth order and gender, musical theater and public service.

I am drawn to the discomfort and tension that precede transition and emergence — that moment before surrendering to sleep, or surfacing from deep waters. I focus on holding space for conflict and collaboration in service to creation and change. As a visual artist, I see my role as that of midwife and mediator, exploring the 'in-between' places and the forces that shape them. Family, memory, loss, identity and reconciliation are themes I use to explore dissonance as a tool for transformation.

I believe in the power of inviting questions and critical thinking. Living in an increasingly divided world, I want to make photographs that spark a universal experience of both the everyday and the momentous — images that ignite reflection of what is known, what is unknown and the fertile ground in between.

My This Is Water series explores self-awareness and its nemeses: blind certitude and unconsciousness.

It is inspired by a story shared by David Foster Wallace in a commencement speech: “There are these two young fish swimming along and they happen to meet an older fish swimming the other way, who nods at them and says, ‘Morning, boys. How’s the water?’ And the two young fish swim on for a bit, and then eventually one of them looks over at the other and goes, ‘What is water?’”

I love this parable and its reminder that essential things are all around us, hidden in plain sight. This project examines what is above and below the surface, shifting mediums and bending light. It seeks to illuminate the malleable foundations upon which we make meaning and take actions that impact ourselves, others, and the environment around us.

I use water to depict moments that precede transformation — those potent and vulnerable moments before something emerges - or does not. Water reveals and water hides. It points to ways in which we are ego-deluded and dissociated from ourselves — drawn, as to a siren’s call, to an anesthetized oblivion.

While it is possible to correct for optical distortions caused by light passing through water, in my photography, I choose not to. I embrace refraction, diffusion, and reflection in service to illusion, to the extent that dissonance is an uncomfortable, but necessary starting place for self-awareness. It is my thesis (and fervent prayer) that grappling with ambiguities is a powerful tool for awakening.

Just as the struggle for transformation defines my quest, it defines each person’s journey between unconsciousness and self-awareness. I believe our task as human beings is to awaken to ourselves and the waters in which we swim so that we may choose our right action in the world. For me, that means not foundering in a sea of willful ignorance or being rendered mute by those who would drown my voice. A nd like our two young fish, it means swimming along, constantly reminding myself that “this… is water.”

WE’VE SELECTED SOME BOOKS FROM OUR FAVOURITE LOCAL AUTHORS; TAKE SOME TIME OUT AND ESCAPE WITH SOME NEW CHARACTERS. THESE ARE AVAILABLE IN LOCAL OR ONLINE STORES.

Strangers I’ll Never Forget - MJ Camilleri

Even the most ordinary life can be stirred by encounters with extraordinary people. Strangers I'll Never

Forget is a fascinating portrayal of some of the remarkable events, mishaps and adventures experienced during three decades of the author's journey through life. This kaleidoscope of anecdotes captures memories in short, enjoyable stories from the sunny island of Malta, and beyond.

Having Said Goodnight - Pierre J Mejlak

Having Said Goodnight is the English edition of the winner of the European Union Prize for Literature. Written by Pierre J Mejlak, and translated by Clare Vassallo and Antoine Cassar. In this captivating collection of stories, people are often at a crossroads, somewhere between a world they know and one they feel pulled towards. Torn between past and fut ure, centre and periphery, real and imaginary, they move from one point in their existence to another, trying to understand a life they have lived but perhaps never fully comprehended.

The Maltese Bestiary - Stephan D Mifsud

A sensational international bestseller, for the first time in print in a luxurious hardback edition, this book is an illustrated guide to the mythical flora, fauna, monsters and fantastic creatures of the Maltese islands. Supernatural entities, frightening creatures, magical plants, ancient gods and a host of other legendary beings — almost lost from Maltese culture in the buzz of modern lifestyles — are brought back from the brink of extinction in this compendium of mythical life forms. Illustrated with realistic depictions and concise descriptions gathered from age-old sources, The Maltese Bestiary serves as a field guide to the almost lost yet living world that is hidden beneath Malta's sunny exterior.

Vespers - Trevor Żahra

Trevor Żahra, Malta’s most beloved author, returns with a collection of stories in which reality blends with dreams, smiles merge with pain, normality is intertwined with the bizarre, and the past walks hand in hand with the present. Read as his characters chant their evening prayers together, their Vespers, before the night blows out the weak flame of the sun and darkness descends.

BOOKBINDING WORKSHOPS

Books are so foundational to our civilisation. They have formed all our ideas about life and about ourselves. They are our moral and legal code and literature, in all its forms, and they continue to shape us and to help us articulate our preoccupations and make sense of life. Bookbinding workshops attract people who are curious about getting a glimpse into craftsmanship behind making books, some are looking for a challenge while others are looking to acquire new skills to apply to their projects. Through these workshops one generally masters a couple of techniques which can later be applied creatively to different book structures. The basics of folding and sewing already offer a wide range of possibilities and you can mix materials too. You can make anything from a little single section notebook to more elaborate book structures like albums or pop-up books, menus and display photobooks.

THE NATIONAL LIBRARY

CALL ME ROMANTIC BUT, I FIGURED, WHAT BETTER WAY TO WRITE ABOUT THE NATIONAL LIBRARY OF MALTA THAN TO ACTUALLY DO IT AT THE NATIONAL LIBRARY OF MALTA. AS I SIT HERE IN THE GLOW OF MY DESK LAMP, MY ONLY COMPANION FOR THE HOUR.

Save for two locally renowned historians who shall remain unnamed, and the hum of a microfiche machine, was yet another researcher engrossed in a stack of newspaper headlines from an otherwise seemingly insignificant month in 1954. At these very same tables much of Malta’s history has been written, poured over, challenged and revised. I’m happy to call this my office on every other day. Yet, today feels special because I am experiencing the space as it is meant to be experienced… and serendipitously, it also happens to be the month dedicated to… you guessed it: books!

Situated in the centre of Valletta on Old Treasury Street, the National Library is one of the major treasures of the Maltese islands. Nowadays, much like its counterparts on mainland Europe, it mainly serves as a reference and research library, but

it was originally founded as a public library, during the last years of the Order of St John of Jerusalem on the island. The library’s origin can be traced as far back as 1555, when at the time all books left in the legacy of deceased knights were to be passed on to the Common Treasury of the Order. The building itself, an architectural gem in its own right, was designed by Polishborn architect Stefano Ittar and was officially inaugurated on June 4, 1812 under British rule. The last important building to be constructed by the Knights, and also amongst their most splendid, it is the only building of its time which retained its original function in an ever changing and much challenged capital city. Over the years, Auberges have served as Ministries, Palaces have been transformed into office blocks, but the library has staunchly remained persevered as a library, with books having lined its walls ever since.

centre of Valletta on Old Treasury Street,

Looking beyond the much-photographed colonnade and seemingly impenetrable baroque façade, aside from books, the library hosts various types of collections ranging from collections of journals to newspapers, manuscripts and maps, all held and preserved for posterity, with the Archives of the Order of St John being the crowning glory amongst them.

During library opening hours, drop-in visitors are allowed in to take a peek at the grand Reading Room to experience its loftiness and stately proportions, allowing themselves to be engulfed by the enchanting scent of old books. The tip to getting in is that all one needs to bring along is an identification document! Items from the national collection are often on display in the visitors’ area, so visitors will always be able to get a taste of the riches that lie behind closed cabinets – no matter the day; and if one is so inclined, why not tie the knot here as well? The space is open to hosting a variety of events, bookish or otherwise, and with a romantic backdrop such as this, it makes the National Library the picture-perfect setting for book-loving couples.

Visiting this architectural gem at night is a pleasure afforded to only a few; but, and here’s the second tip, if you are travelling to Malta in April, May or June, on either the 21st, 26th and 23rd respectively, you can tick this off-the-beaten-track visit off your list, by attending one of the free public lectures held in the evenings, which the National Library organises every year around a chosen theme. Aside from the archives, the National Library boasts of a wealthy collection of artistic items too in terms of prints, watercolours, paintings, illuminated manuscripts and illustrated printed works, and the aim of the ongoing lecture series, entitled ‘Created to Inspire: 500 years of artistic splendour in Malta ’, is to showcase to the public these little-known works of art, stretchin g as far back as the 15th century, usually only accessible to scholars and researchers.

Picture it, the Reading Room all lit up, banter over a glass of wine, the opportunity to view items from the national collection, which few if any have ever set eyes on - and who are we kidding, also nail the perfect book month selfie whilst you’re at it!

DESI’S DONE IT ALL

IN THE DAYTIME, STILL-HUMBLE SOUL SINGER AND SONGWRITER DESI CAMPBELL LIVES THE LIFESTYLE YOUR AVERAGE SHOWBIZ STAR DOES. HE STEAMS IT OUT IN HIS HOME SAUNA, TENDS TO HIS PLANTS, WORKS OUT AND, AS A KEEN CHEF, COOKS HEALTHY MEALS.

He does all this whilst practicing his vocals and instruments for his shows ahead, in the peace and tranquility of his home. This sounds about right for someone whose long-withstanding music career dating back to the 80s in London, has taken him to LA, New York, Japan and back.

He has recorded and played all over the world for over thirty years, and still plays abroad occasionally. Campbell got his first big break as a backing singer for The Style Council. He went on to sing with names such as Levi Topps from The Four Tops, Errol Brown in Hot Chocolate, and even Aretha Franklin! He supported Lisa Stansfield and The Brand New Heavies with his nineties band Everyday People on tour. Since 2010, Desi Campbell has made Malta his home.

“I truly love my vocation and feel blessed to be doing something that doesn't feel like work for a living,” Desi tells Il-Bizzilla. “I find Malta to be a paradise where anywhere in the world is easily accessible, the climate is amazing, opportunities for me are abundant, and I'm happy to call it home.”

Thirteen years ago, Desi, of Jamaican background who grew up in the UK, moved to the island for a new start. At first, it wasn’t easy, and, after years of recording and touring with his talent, he found himself taking a regular part-time job for the first time in his life. A “shock to the system” - his words - the singer never gave up hope, and after patiently pushing through, the bookings started rolling in again. He now focuses his time between his solo projects, his latest

release being the uplifting ‘Better Man’, as well as performing with his band Brown Sugar at luxury hotels and extravagant wedding receptions on our sunny shores. The booming so-called ‘destination wedding’ trend has fluctuated, and couples who’ve long yearned to tie the knot, but were instead tied down with travel restrictions for two years, can now do so in style. Nothing says stylish more than a sharply-dressed wedding band, and Campbell’s band Brown Sugar fits the bill big-time. The frontman’s band is made up of young, enthusiastic local talent, who collectively bring a sense of synchronised funk, reggae and jazz to the party.

Ah, the Maltese wedding. It’s outdoor pools and palazzo lawns, all white tablecloths and catering company napkins. The free-flowing Negronis (made with Kinnie, naturally), and those many, many little caviar tartlets that just seem to keep on coming. It’s the catching up with cousins and friends you haven’t seen since university. Bridesmaids dresses and flower crowns, cream-coloured bouquets and a lot, a lot of Instagram posing. And of course - the cincherthe famous Mediterranean wedding reception dance floor. It is no

wonder that Malta has become a go-to host for so many couples getting hitched in this era of restored global travel.

When he’s performing a live show, Desi has one rule - no iPads on stage. “We’re a rehearsed band, not a karaoke show”, he tells Il-Bizzilla, insisting band members learn the songs ad verbatim, so that they can engage with the audience without getting distracted. Full focus brings spontaneity and fun to the performance, and a showman like Desi Campell lights up the whole stage with his renditions of the classics. He’s into all music, and incorporates relative newcomers like Sam Smith and Harry Styles into his smokin’ set-lists, but excels with evergreen Motown and R’n’B classics. He goes through phases with what he listens to personally. “My recent favourites are 'Crazy Little Thing Called Love’ by Queen, and 'Back In Love Again’ by LTD. They’re two very contrasting genres, but that's what I enjoy about music - there are no rules, restrictions or guidelines. I just gravitate towards whatever I'm feeling”. Wise words from someone who’s been gravitating towards his feelings for years, and ended up seeing the world by reaching for (and singing with!) the stars.

BIRGU FLEA MARKET FINDS

Young migrant families looking for great deals on clothes, elderly collectors shrewdly casting a beady eye over stalls they’ve combed a thousand times and us, the young creatives, lovers of interiors, looking to further eclecticise our homes.

Even if one leaves empty-handed - a rare event - the social aspect of the early, pre-breakfast buzz is always worth the Sunday morning wake-up call. Here, a few of these bargain hunters share some of their favourite finds.

THOMAS CAMILLERI @THELAZARUSCLUB

Creative direction by day, acting by night, and always on the hunt for objects with a story. That’s also one of the drivers behind his Lazarus Tiles project, where he salvages antique Maltese cement tiles, restores and frames them for a new life as art pieces.

“Where to begin? So many objects and pieces of art in my home started off on the dusty floor of the Fortini ground. While I love objects with history, I hate the thought of having a home that looks like a museum. If not art, I like objects to be functional. So I love this beautiful Hurricane fan which I’d found there and which still runs like a dream. The sound of a fan is synonymous with summer holidays as a child and the sound of AC just doesn’t lull me to sleep the way these old fans do.

I also had a bit of a special moment one morning at the market when I found a painting by my great, great uncle Giovanni Saliba, brother of my great-grandmother Olympia. I grew up with a painting of his in my grandparents’ house and he used to sign his work with a very distinctive triangular 'G'. So when I saw this signature on a painting at the market I was blown away. 1932!”

MATTHEW DEMARCO @DEMARCO.DEMARCO.DEMARCO

Graphic designer, type aficionado and lover of all the good things in life, Matthew started the @maltatype project over ten years ago and is a regular at the flea market.

“Most visits to the market result in the purchase of some potted plant grown from cuttings or small curiosities to place around the home. My favourite market find, however, was a beautiful book titled "Pageantry of Tropical Birds" which was peeping out from under a pile of smaller books. It immediately caught my eye and as soon as I opened it, I knew I had to have it. The large book contains pages upon pages of beautiful, loose illustrations of rainforest birds, which are now proudly displayed on the ‘nature wall’ in my study.”

GABRIELLA DE GAETANO @STORJASTORE

After working in London for several years in styling and design, most

recently at the wonderfully eclectic Anthropologie store on Regent Street and at Scenic Sets with Carmel Said, Gaby returned to Malta and founded her online shop of thrifted finds.

“Heading to the market on a Sunday morning is a weekly appointment I love to keep. My father is just as much a magpie as I am and is always up for an early morning adventure.

These lovely bowls are so beautifully made and although they’re water-stained, there’s not a single chip on them - probably Dutch and in excellent condition!

I look for fun and practical objects when hunting around, but when I spotted this €10 giant giraffe made out of Lego by the entrance I couldn’t resist taking him home with me. I’m selfemployed and work from home so he’s a good co mpanion to have beside my desk.”

SEE THE ISLANDS FROM THE SEA

THERE’S SOMETHING SPECIAL ABOUT BEING ON MIRRORED WATER AT SUNRISE OR SUNSET. STILL, CRYSTAL CLEAR BLUE SEA, AND NOT A SOUL IN SIGHT. PEACE, QUIET, AND TRANQUILITY. THE SUN PEEPING OUT OR SINKING BACK INTO THE HORIZON ADDS TO THE SENSE OF CALM.

Spring in Malta brings warmth with it, while the rugged coastline would still be carpeted with greenery from a not so long ago Winter rainfall - and what a coastline it is! From sandy beaches in the North, to white cliffs in the South of the island, caves and inlets found all around, the islands of Malta, Gozo and Comino ought to truely be discovered.

There is no better way to explore the coastline than heading out on a kayak or canoe. These may either be for two persons or a single person vessel. Usually quite slimline, one sits inside the canoe or kayak, as they move very close to the water level. With either a canoe or kayak, a handheld paddle is used to propel the vessel forward and glide across the water. Getting in one may be a little tricky at first as some balance is required, but once safely in and out on the water, kayaks and canoes are very easy to navigate. By being so close to the water, simply looking to the side, one can often see and enjoy the bottom of the sea, along with interesting marine life.

The beauty of such a sport is being able to carry provisions along with you, ideally in a closed dry bag, such as water, a snack, sun protection cream and your mobile. One can spend a whole morning or day on the water, stopping at ‘hard to reach on foot’ bays and

inlets. Pulling the kayak or canoe onto the beach in order to rest, swim, and picnic is easy, once the back fin is kept protected!

For the more experienced and adventurous who’d like to head out alone, kayaks and canoes are available for rent on several beaches across the island, but guided trips are also offered for anyone wanting help. A certain level of fitness is required for longer trips, but anyone can easily paddle around the bays, along the coast outside the cordoned off swimming zones.

Kayaking puts me in a complete state of tranquility and I love the freedom that comes with it. I spend the whole time with a huge grin on my face, taking in the fresh sea air and the warmth of the sun.

My top spots in Malta are Ġnejna Bay, St Thomas Bay, Mistra Bay.

In Gozo I recommend: Ramla Bay, Xlendi.

SHAUN FARRUGIA HEAVEN LIKE MINE

Shaun Farrugia releases his debut EP ‘Heaven Like Mine’ via Polydor, alongside a new single and stunning music video ‘Vertigo.’ Talking about ‘Heaven Like Mine’, Shaun explains: “It’s an honest account of all that I’ve felt for the past few years, the good times and the bad, with love forever being present.” Frequently played on BBC Radio 1 and BBC Radio 1’s Future Pop, Shaun’s catalogue has 30 million streams to date. His previous cover of The Weekend’s Blinding Lights flew straight to #1 on the Shazam Discovery Charts. Artists who can credit their work to Shaun’s early songwriting include a diverse range from Mimi Webb, to collaborations with DJ Martin Garrix , to co-signs with Sigala, all being just the start to his exposure.

A New Gothic presents work by figurative artist Ġulja Holland. Holland’s work is invested in the liminal and introspective, forging an understanding of the global now; impending, anticipating and approaching something altogether new. Within 35 paintings, digital works and monoprints, the exhibition explores notions of womanhood, climate existentialism and our relationship with the natural world. Holland is collaborating with curator Andrew Borg Wirth, as well as several local and international artists, academics and practitioners from across disciplines. In the four-week period of the project, she will be delivering a diverse programme of multimedia explorations that weave global and personal narratives of womanhood, existentialist politics and alternative histories. The exhibition will be inaugurated by international art critic, curator and art historian Kathleen Soriano and will run from the 14th of April 2023 until the 21st of May 2023 at Spazju Kreattiv. This project is supported by Arts Council Malta.

THE MALTA INTERNATIONAL FIREWORKS COMPETITION

THE MALTA INTERNATIONAL FIREWORKS FESTIVAL TAKES PLACE BETWEEN MONDAY 24TH AND SUNDAY 30TH APRIL 2023. AWARDS ARE WON BY THE MOST IMPRESSIVE PYROMUSICAL DISPLAYS AND THERE IS ALSO A COMPETITION FOR THOSE PATIENT ENOUGH TO CAPTURE THE SPECTACLE ON CAMERA.

Clyde Grech picked up his first camera as a teen, bought his first DSLR at 21 and at 26, won The 2022 Malta International Fireworks Photography Competition.

Air Malta cabin crew member Clyde, unsurprisingly, lists aviation and travel as one of his passions; indeed it was when travelling as a teenager with his family, that he started to take photographs. “I love the outdoors, being in nature and also adrenaline sports, all of which are great subjects for photography. Each requires different techniques and that’s one of the great things about it; you are always learning, experimenting and refining your skills. I get asked to take engagement and event photos too which

again, is completely different; capturing the special moments, the unposed moments, is really satisfying. I use a Go-Pro too for action shots for when I’m free diving, surfing or skiing!

While I can see the attraction of taking pictures on your phone, its not quite the same, even though you can get great results. I like the art of photography, to take my time and not just point and shoot. I like the ability to really hone in on details and tweak settings.

This is where the love of taking photos of fireworks was born. Not many people have the patience to get that shot – it’s time consuming but for me the effort is worth it.

TIPS FOR SHOOTING FIREWORKS

1. Find the best location – know where the best vantage point is for the show and consider the wind direction too. You want to capture the fireworks and not the smoke and haze.

2. Set up somewhere without excessive artificial light if possible.

3. Set up early enough to arrange your settings and be there before the crowds arrive.

4. Use a sturdy tripod.

5. Focus your lens on an item far away from you and then turn off Autofocus.

6. ISO controls the sensitivity of the camera sensor– set this to low to reduce the ‘noise’ of the image.

7. Aperture has to be set carefully to prevent overexposure while at the same time making sure the light trails from the fireworks are the correct thickness.

8. Shutter speed - the shutter must remain open for a long time so set shutter speed on low to enable a long exposure.

9. Never use live view as this kills battery – and there can be a lot of waiting around!

10. Time your shots well!

There will be some editing to do afterwards to finetune, enhance colours and clean any ‘noise’. I take around 250 shots to get the perfect one. This narrows down to a shortlist of around 20. I personally don’t like to photoshop things out; if there is a church roof or a tree, it should form part of the final image.

Having won the competition last year, I’m really delighted to be the official photographer of the Malta International Fireworks Festival this year.”

THE COURTYARD

AN ELEGANT, WARM AND WELCOMING FAMILY RESIDENCE FOR AT LEAST FOUR CENTURIES, PALAZZO FALSON HAS LOOKED DOWN IN BENIGN AND SILENT APPROVAL UPON INTIMATE FAMILY GATHERINGS AND SERIOUS AND AUSTERE FORMAL FEASTS.

Although the building has been standing for 800 years, we learn of the first official guest resident in 1531. It was the French Grand Master Philippe Villiers de L'Isle-Adam who brought the Knights of St John to Malta. The palazzo continued to be used by various families until the last much loved family owners, Olof and Nella Gollcher until their death in 1962.

With its historic architectural features, Palazzo Falson is a truly enchanting setting for intimate weddings. Couples seeking an unforgettable backdrop for such a special day will never be disappointed. Fondazzjoni Patrimonju Malti, the non-profit making organisation that spreads awareness of Maltese heritage, has

been captivated by this gem of a venue, ever since becoming the everyday custodians of its iconic walls. Following the total and sympathetic refurbishment which was completed in 2007, the Palazzo was first opened to the public. Not only does it offer a plethora of photographic shots but the many indoor options provide shade and shelter during peak seasons and at times of unexpected weather changes.

Its inner warmth extends to the open, plant-girt courtyard at the core of this majestic palazzo. The courtyard is topped by a discreet, arched bell-housing, with a gently splashing, renaissancestyle fountain at the centre; wisteria-clad walls are climbed by

bougainvillea reaching to the ever-cool corner arbour and the steep rising, Renaissance side-staircase. Above the eastern arm of the mid-level, shelf-like terrace, the bust relief of the last private owner, Olof, smiles down benignly on a kaleidoscope of events - from civil wedding ceremonies, intimate private dinners and receptions, music soirees, short film shows, book launches and children’s activities that all jos tle below, where once he and Nella hosted their many friends from all walks of Maltese society.

Beneath his likeness is a stone bench, the perfect tranquil spot for a couple to enjoy their alone time together. On the front face are entwined their initials, O(lof) and N(ella) and the date of their civil marriage in 1938. The Gollchers also celebrated their nuptials once again, not in the timeless splendour of their Norman House, as the Palazzo was then named; but in Rome, the eternal city in 1947.

Why get married in Malta? There are many reasons! 300 days of sunshine, crisp blue sea and countless unique wedding venues.

Palazzo Falson Historic House Museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00am to 5:00pm (last entrance at 4:00pm). However, during the Easter period the museum will be closed on Good Friday and Easter Sunday and open on Easter Monday. Audio guided tours are available in the following languages: Maltese, English, Italian, French, German and Spanish.

EASTER FUNDRAISING CONCERT STABAT MATER

THE RESEARCH, INNOVATION AND DEVELOPMENT TRUST (RIDT) IS A SUPPORTING STRUCTURE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MALTA THAT SUSTAINS AND EXPANDS RESEARCH IN ALL AREAS OF STUDY, BY PROVIDING ADDITIONAL FUNDS THAT SUPPLEMENT THE EXISTING MODEST RESOURCES.

Wilfred Kenely — the CEO of the RIDT — explains that the organisation is currently financing research projects in all areas of study, including PhD scholarships in cancer research, ALS, Ophthalmology, and other non-medical areas such as Climate Change and Criminology, and has facilitated the very first Maltese scientific experiment on the International Space Station.

EASTER FUNDRAISING CONCERT

Following the success of Mro Christopher Muscat’s highly acclaimed Stabat Mater — an original oratorio that first premiered in 2012, the RIDT is delighted to be producing the second production of this masterpiece. Described as “a monumental work” by TEMPO magazine, Stabat Mater was received extremely well by the public.

This year’s concert will be held on the 4th of April at St John’s CoCathedral, Valletta. Un der the direction of the composer — Mro Christopher Muscat, the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra, Kor Malta and the Jubilate De o choir will be bringing Stabat Mater

to life, alongside Josef Bugeja — the Cantor and Caroline Bruker — the Soprano.

MRO CHRISTOPHER MUSCAT

Mro. Christopher Muscat has worked with the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra and the Malta Youth Orchestra ever since his conducting debut in 2000. He has also been the guest conductor of several international orchestras and ensembles, and Muscat is very much active in the field of sacred music. Besides his role as Music Director of the Jubilate Deo Choir, he has conducted numerous special occasions at St John’s Co-Cathedral, the Mdina Metropolitan Cathedral in Malta, Westminster Cathedral in London and St Peter’s Basilica at the Vatican. Through his pioneering work with the Cappella Gregoriana Jubilate Deo, Muscat is at the forefront of a movement that aims to revive the art of plainchant singing on the Maltese islands.

JOSEF BUGEJA

As a child, Bugeja studied piano and has performed extensively

both as a soloist as well as in various chamber formations around the Maltese islands. He then continued his musical studies at the University of Malta where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Studies and Philosophy in 1998, as well as a Master of Music in Composition in 2020 at the same university. He specialises in sacred and liturgical music performance both as a conductor and a cantor. In 2004 he was appointed Assistant Director of the Jubilate Deo Choir, Naxxar. Adding to this he has also been appointed maestro di cappella of several parishes around Malta.

CAROLINE BRUKER

With her captivating tone and intellectual musicality, Caroline illuminates the senses. Bruker made her operatic debut at the age of 16 while singing two productions on the same night: Dido in Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas at Davidson Fine Arts Magnet School and The Page in Verdi’s Rigoletto with the Augusta Opera. Her recent operatic roles include The Vixen from Janáček’s The Cunning Little Vixen with the Trentino Music Festival, Woglinde in Wagner’s Das Rheingold with the Hamburg Kammeroper’s

Theater für Kinder and Papagena in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte at Theater Osnabrück. Other highlights include performing excerpts of Bach’s St Matthew’s Passion with the Bundesjugendballet at the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden and Konzerthaus Berlin. She now performs regularly throughout Germany with early music ensembles and orchestras, such as Los Temperamentos, Bremer Barockorchester, Merlini and The Muses’ Fellows.

She has also established herself in the contemporary genre of classical music, most recently premiering Michael Wertmüller’s Palimpsest with the stARTfestival from Bayer Kultur. Caroline has presented concerts throughout Europe, Asia, the United States, South Africa and Australia.

Tickets for this concert can be obtained from teatrumanoel.com. mt or directly from Teatru Manoel’s booking office in Valletta. Proceeds from the concert will go towards medical research at the University of Malta.

YOUR DELICIOUS MONTHLY RECIPE

A restaurant located in Sliema, Azar offers international cuisine in a setting of laid-back sophistication. Azar encapsulates the perfect combination of elegance and simplicity to delight the senses. The concept was conceived by chef and owner, Michele Zahra, after years working in the restaurant industry, experimenting and refining his techniques. His passion for cooking over open flames and infusing dishes with the flavour of wood and natural fire inspired him to develop this unique concept.

64 CULINARY
WE BRING YOU THE BEST THAT THE MALTESE KITCHEN HAS TO OFFER WITH RECIPES INSPIRED BY MEDITERRANEAN AND EUROPEAN CUISINE.

This dish is our twist on the traditional Maltese soup called ‘Kusksu’. This dish probably originated from Malta’s Arab occupation, given the very close resemblance it has to couscous.

Our take has a base of rich Prawn bisque that is cooked down with the pasta in a risotto style manner to create a perfectly creamy dish and finished with a Crudo of local red prawns to give it a fresh finish.

PRAWN BISQUE KUSKSU

INGREDIENTS

80g Fregola pasta

100g Prawn Bisque

50g Raw Local Prawns

20g Parmiggiano Reggiano

20g Lemon Juice

10g Pistachio

10g Extra Virgin Olive oil

5g Dill

Salt to taste

METHOD

Start by cutting the prawns into small pieces and mix with half of the lemon juice, set aside for later. Add the pasta and prawn bisque to a pot and cook it over low heat until it is cooked to your liking. Make sure to top up with water during the cooking process as the pasta will absorb liquid rapidly whilst it cooks.

In the meantime, grate the cheese, chop the pistachio and pick some dill fronds. Once the pasta is cooked, add olive oil, salt, cheese and the rest of the lemon juice. Stir off heat to emulsify.

To finish off, place the pasta in a serving plate, top with the Pistachio, Dill and Red prawns. Now relax and enjoy your homecooked meal!

WHEN LIFE GIVES YOU LEMONS...

LOBBYIST AND HOBBIEST, GERALD STRICKLAND, MOVED HIS FAMILY FROM BRUSSELS TO MALTA FOR A CHANGE OF LIFESTYLE, AND TODAY, ALONG WITH HIS ‘DAY JOB’ AND RUGBY COACHING PASTIMES, MAKES A SERIES OF AWARD-WINNING JAMS, SAUCES, PICKLES AND MARMALADES.

“My family enjoy an outdoorsy life; we all like sport and spending time together, and good food is at the heart of that. Coupled with a military background where having tasty food was key, an interest in preserving slowly crept up on me.

I did some courses with The River Café and when the citrus trees in the garden were heavy with fruit, I at least knew how to maximise the crop. Indeed, our larder doubled as a gift cabinet, full of jars of my ‘liquid gold’. Jams and marmalades which we

used as a family had requests for - Malta in a 100g jar - from my relatives abroad.

The ‘organisation’ is a family affair, I cook and recipe test with the help of my wife and daughter, and we all get involved with tasting, jarring, and sticking on labels one by one and they all help when we attend the local artisan markets too. It’s important for me to involve them.

There are so many uses for our products, they aren’t just for spreading on toast or using as a dip. At home, we are mostly on a plant-based diet and using them as ingredients for vinaigrettes and glazes really ups the taste profile. You have to try the Plumb & Brandy jam on a salad!”

In a very short period of time, Gee’s Gin & Tonic Marmalade and his Seville Orange and Lemon Marmalade were awarded Gold

and Silver at The World’s Original Marmalade Awards competition in the UK. In November 2022, Gee’s won a Great Taste Award for its Chilli and Red Pepper Jam; a huge achievement! The international attention is growing and they've even been mentioned in the FT.

New varieties on the cards include a red pepper, chilli and strawberry combo whose versatility is being tested by the family. We imagine it will be a winner for more accolades and with local cheeses too!

Add the gin, orange liqueur, lemon juice, and marmalade into a shaker with ice and shake vigorously until well-chilled. Pour into a glass and garnish with a slice of lemon or orange.

GERALD’S TOP TIP?

Jams and marmalades all start by being cooked in a pan over a high heat. The setting point is the moment when the pectin, acid and sugar are in a balance that makes the molecules cling together to form a gel. It’s tempting to overcook preserves and it’s often good to remind people who are new to jam making that jam should set in a jar and not in the pan.

Don’t panic if your preserve is still runny after several days. If this is the case simply open up the jar and return the contents to a pan and bring to the boil for a couple of minutes.

THE FOLLOW ING PAGES WILL GIVE YOU AN INSIGHT ON WHAT’S GOING ON AT AIR MALTA. THE BEHINDTHE-SCENES AND HIGHLIGH TS OF PAST MONTHS AND FORTHCOMING ONES.

MALTA’S NATIONAL AIRLINE TELLS IT LIKE IT IS, ENSU RING ALL AIR MALTA CUSTOMERS ARE WELL-INFORMED WHILE SOARING HIGH IN THE SKY.

Over the past 10 years Trudy Kerr has led over 2,000 interviews. British-born, Maltese-homed Trudy has presented and produced over 400 TV shows on Malta's national television station, has spent 7 years as a drive time radio DJ, presented live events all over the world and presented and produced hundreds of podcast interviews, and it is this interviewing that is her passion, and it is this passion that lead to the launch of The SHE Word.

The YouTube and Spotify podcast, now available on Air Malta's inflight system, is a simple concept - conversations that women rarely have, but really should. The SHE Word was born directly from a moving and powerful interview on a podcast, and her own personal experience at the time;

"After COVID brought an end to my drive time radio DJ journey, a co-presenter and long time friend suggested I started podcasting, and at the end of 2020 I launched The Interviewer - which now rates in the 10% of Spotify podcasts globally. I had no idea that this platform would be so successful. When I started this journey, it just gave me the opportunity to do what I love; to interview, to share people's stories.

I was also asked to host podcasts for a Maltese household name brand Mvintage, and it was on behalf of this podcast (Mpowered), that I contacted friend and actress Maxine Attard to come to talk about 'Women in Theatre'. As I detailed the invitation on a phone call with Max, she replied softly, Yes, I would love to come, but do you mind if we talk about something else - do you mind if we talk about my recent miscarriage instead?'. Mindful of the sensitivity of the topic, and my complete lack of knowledge about it, I handled the interview as a conversation between two friends; a very moving, powerful and emotional conversation. The show went out on a Thursday evening, and within 24 hours over 40,000 viewers and listeners had engaged with the show, national press had picked up

the story, and the show had been shared hundreds of times. Women responded to Maxine's touching and explicit description of what had happened to her with one key theme 'thank you for sharing a story that affects so many women so deeply, and is rarely spoken about'. And so the seed of The SHE Word was planted.

'At the same time, I was also passing through my own menopause journey, a journey that had caught me out. Still feeling like I was in my 30's, I wasn't expecting to face a life changing event - albeit one that affects every woman in one way or another. I found that this was another topic that women rarely spoke about, especially openly, and so it would seem that this was a podcast that needed to happen. Once we started planning the show we discovered that there are hundreds of conversations that women rarely have but really should.'

The SHE Word is recorded around a kitchen table, three women with one topic in common, and Trudy there to host and guide the conversation. Season One unravels topics with sensitivity, honesty and humour - Women and Parenting, Women and Body Image, Women and Social Media, Menopause, Women's Rights, Workplace and Business, Mental Health, Age, Career roles in a Man's World, Fertility, Sexuality and Gender and a very moving show with 3 young women as they look to what their future's might hold.

"I wasn't necessarily planning a second season, but as I we filmed these conversations it became apparent that the power of the show lies in openly discussing topics that need to be normalised, to remove any shame and embarrassment, and embrace the journeys that we pass through and bring us together as women".

The SHE Word Season One is available on the Air Malta in flight system, and also YouTube and Spotify. Join The SHE Word Patreon page for exclusive content and to support these conversations.

CARMEN CUSCHIERI

HEAD OF CABIN CREW AND IN-FLIGHT SERVICE - IN-FLIGHT MANAGER

– CABIN CREW INSTRUCTOR – CHECK IN-FLIGHT MANAGER

HOW LONG HAVE YOU WORKED AT AIR MALTA AND IN WHAT ROLES?

I joined Air Malta in April 1987 and have progressed from Cabin Crew, Inflight Manager, Cabin Crew instructor, Check Inflight Manager and Head of Cabin Crew and Inflight Services since 1st June 2022.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT YOUR CURRENT ROLE?

Being involved in decisions that are seeing Air Malta evolving into a more efficient airline.

AND WHAT’S THE MOST CHALLENGING ASPECT?

I am currently involved in several projects, mainly preparing for the busy summer season. Also, in my department, I have the biggest group of staff reporting to me. Most of the time catching up with everything is the main challenge.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO IN YOUR FREE TIME?

In my free time I enjoy playing tennis. On weekends I try spending time with my family. We do a lot of gardening, go for long walks, cooking and eating together.

WHICH IS YOUR FAVOURITE EUROPEAN DESTINATION AND WHY?

I like the main European cities for different reasons, Paris and Prague and I like the cultural vibe of the cities, Rome for the ancient history, London for shopping and musicals, Amsterdam for its relaxed vibe. From these 5 I don’t have a favourite. It depends on the time of the year and what I would be looking for. Nowadays, when I go abroad, I mainly seek to have a break from everyday life and would want to have a relaxed break with good food and good company.

WHICH IS YOUR FAVOURITE DESTINATION YOU HAVE VISITED AND WHY?

My favourite would be Prague because I was not expecting to find such a lovely city. The entertainment in the streets, musicians and artists performing on the streets, the cobbled streets, the castles, it’s amazing.

DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE LANGUAGE?

Apart from the Maltese language I speak English, German and some Italian. Being a cabin crew for such a long time one starts understanding other languages and learning commonly used phrases. My favourite has to be English, since it the language I can communicate easily in with in the ambience I work in.

FAVOURITE GENRE OF MUSIC?

DREAM HOLIDAY DESTINATION?

WHERE WOULD YOU RECOMMEND VISITING WITHIN THE MALTESE ISLANDS?

My favourite cities in Malta are Valletta and Mdina.

FAVOURITE MALTESE EXPRESSION?

. My motto is: Try and enjoy the present and never look back with regrets.

of 2 minutes

operates a fleet of seven Airbus, four A320neo and three A320ceo aircraft. Air Malta started the renewal of its fleet in 2018, moving from old A320ceo to greener A320neo and plans that its entire fleet will consist of a single-type aircraft the A320neo. The transition of the fleet means that the airline will significantly reduce fuel consumption, CO2 emissions and noise footprint and wi ll therefore be well-placed to be a leader in the reduction of human induced climate change and in meeting its sustainability targets.

USE OF PORTABLE ELECTRONIC DEVICES ON BOARD

TRANSMITTING PORTABLE ELECTRONIC DEVICES (PEDS)

Devices that can send or receive data by wireless means, such as mobile phones and tablets, may be used during all phases of the flight provided the device has 'Flight Mode' capability and that this is enabled. If the data transmission capability cannot be switched off (whilst the device is operating), the device itself must be switched off completely for the duration of the flight. Bluetooth wireless connectivity is allowed. Such devices shall be safely secured in the customers’ hand (handheld) or a pocket during taxi, take-off and landing. Accessories, such as headphones, must not obstruct access to the aisle. The use of Wi-Fi with Flight Mode enabled is permitted on some of our aircraft that are equipped with an in-flight entertainment system. The Cabin Crew will make an announcement on aircraft that are so equipped, to inform you when Wi-Fi can be enabled on your PEDs.

NON-TRANSMITTING PORTABLE ELECTRONIC DEVICES (PEDS)

These could include, but are not limited to, items such as DVD players, electronic games, music players and personal cameras. Such devices shall be safely secured in the customers’ hand (handheld) or a pocket during taxi, take-off and landing. Larger devices shall be stowed away safely during taxi, take-off and landing.

ARE THERE TIMES WHEN I CANNOT USE MY ELECTRONIC DEVICES?

Under certain circumstances, your Flight Crew or Cabin Crew may ask you to switch off all Personal Electronic Devices. This may happen during automatic landings, low visibility takeoff or landing, or during emergency situations.

YOU SHOULD INFORM THE CABIN CREW WHEN …

Your portable electronic device is damaged, becomes hot, produces smoke, is lost, or falls into the seat structure. If safe to do so, the device must be switched off immediately.

LAPTOPS AND NOTEBOOKS

Larger devices (e.g. laptops) may be used during boarding and during the flight, however they must be switched off and stowed away safely during taxi, take-off and landing since they could hinder an emergency evacuation. 'Flight Mode' must be enabled. Use of Bluetooth connectivity is allowed. Use of Wi-Fi under Flight Mode is allowed on some aircraft which are equipped with an in-flight entertainment system.

CAN I USE HEADPHONES?

Personal headphones can be used during all phases of the flight. However, we ask you to remove your headphones during the safety briefing. For safety reasons, customers sitting in an emergency exit row must refrain from using headphones during taxi, take-off and landing.

If you require more information, please refer to the table below which includes a list of Personal Electronic Devices (PEDs) which can be used onboard Air Malta flights by phase of flight. Please do not hesitate to contact any member of our cabin crew if you have any further questions.

* The use of Wi-Fi with Flight Mode enabled is permitted on some of our aircraft that are equipped with an in-flight entertainment system. Safety Notice: The carriage of damaged, defective or recalled lithium batteries or devices is prohibited on-board Air Malta aircrafts.
