The 13th annual Gates Automotive Classic tips off Friday night with a bang, as budding rival Holy Cross prepares to avenge their early season defeat to the Pilots in game one. On November 2, the Pilots defeated the Saints on the road, 68-57, for their second win of the season. The Pilots are looking to avoid their first five-game losing streak since January 10-24, 2006. The Pilots are coming off a 53-54 defeat to crosstown rival IU South Bend, just the sixth loss to the Titans since 1970. Holy Cross is coming off their first win of the season on Wednesday night, defeating PU Calumet 70-68. The win was the first of Bob Schermerhorn’s career at Holy Cross and only the program’s fifth win since the start of the 2008-09 season. The Saints are led by junior Justin Breveard’s 14.7 points per game. Saturday, the Pilots will face their fourth ranked team in 19 days, facing No. 20 IU East. The Red Wolves are celebrating their first Top 25 appearance in program history and are off to a 10-2 start. One of the most dynamic offenses in the NAIA, the Red Wolves rank second in the nation in scoring offense per game (91.5) and third in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.42). They are led by prolific scoring guard Tyler Rigby, who pours in 23.6 points per game. Fellow MCC foe Marian joins the fray for the Gates Autotive Classic this year. The Knights are off to a 4-3 start, including 1-2 in the MCC. Last year in the Bethel Tip-Off Classic, the Knights dropped a 71-73 decision to Holy Cross before defeating Judson 82-70. An MCC Second Team player a year ago, senior guard Jordan Tucker leads the Knights with 19.4 points per contest.
