GA ME PR E V IE W The Pilots are looking to avoid just the second 0-3 start in MCC play in program history as they welcome in the No. 19 Wildcats of Indiana Wesleyan (9-3, 2-0) to the Wiekamp Athletic Center. The Pilots are playing their third consecutive ranked opponent in 12 days, having previously went down in defeat to No. 1 Saint Francis and No. 15 Grace. The Pilots have not lost three consecutive games since January 13-20, 2007. Dating back to 1968-69, this is the fourth most-played rivalry in Bethel’s history, ranking behind only Grace, Goshen, and Huntington. The Pilots lead the overall series 60-25. However, the arrival of head coach Greg Tonagel to Indiana Wesleyan in 2005-06 has ushered in a new era in the rivalry, with the series between Pilots’ head coach Mike Lightfoot and Tonagel a 6-6 deadlock. Two of the most successful programs in the nation the past four seasons, the Pilots and the Wildcats have compiled a 223-62 overall record and a 92-36 record in the MCC. The two programs have also combined for four MCC titles, three MCC tournament championships, two NCCAA national championships, six NAIA national tournament appearances, five Elite Eights, one Sweet Sixteen, and one Fab Four. Returning for Indiana Wesleyan are MCC Honorable Mention performer Will Hubertz (11.8 pts, 4.0 rebs) and All-Newcomer team member Aaron Martin (7.8 pts, 3.5 rebs). The Wildcats are led by 6-7 sophomore forward Patrick Hopkins, who is averaging a team-high 16.5 pts, 8.7 rebs, and 0.7 blks. Despite ranking near the bottom of the MCC in nearly every defensive category (8th in scoring def., fg pct. def., 3pt pct. def, steals; 9th in turnover margin), the Wildcats have reeled off six straight wins, including victories over MCC foes Taylor and Goshen, and NAIA DI No. 17 Campbellsville and RV Cumberlands.
