Editors Note

Hello everyone,

I had to let you know about Sewing B in Stapleford. I have been along and brushed up my sewing skills and throughly enjoyed the workshops given there by Elaine Bell. The shop is open Wednesday to Saturdays, 9.45am - 3pm selling quality fabrics , craft materials and haberdashery, wool is also supplied. The workshops are booked online, but if you wanted to book by person or enquire about the courses available you can pop into the shop. Sewing B is on Facebook and Instagram so you can book on any of the workshops, these are updated daily. You can book on a 3 hour slot for the “Bring Your Own” sewing you have to take your own project and fabric, but you haver use of their own sewing machines or overlockers, and receive professional advice and help from Elaine. Its advisable to go onto the website, or Facebook-Instagram to see the times and availability as they get booked up very quickly. Workshops are varied and on different levels, beginners can learn how to use an overlocker, and a sewing machine from scratch and how to make everything from a cushion right up to more advanced sewing (these workshops range in price depending on which course you choose ,but fabric and cotton are provided on these) The courses are friendly, professional, and great fun! It doesn’t matter if you are a beginner to more advanced, there is something for everyone. (Mention Grapevine when you book or call in !) I certainly recommend Sewing B - 174 Derby Road, Stapleford, Nottingham NG9 7AY www.sewingbelle.co.uk Parking is available on a car park behind the cafe across the road from Sewing B. Check out our competitions this month, win tickets to see Hugh Cornwell (from the band The Stranglers) and The Steve Hillage Band - see inside. Until next month,]

Hello Gardeners…

It’s Gardener Steve here! and I’m bringing you gardening tips, news and events.

Welcome to February- March Gardening.

Our gardens have seen quite a bit of rainfall and milder temperature's over the past few months meaning we have seen some growth such as the lawns, don't think they have ever stopped growing have they! but as I sit here to write this month's gardening, we have had some snow flurries and temperatures more that we would expect in February. Perennials that I didn't trim down last year are now looking fabulous in the winter garden with this dusting of frost on them, it is really surprising what interest they can bring, and another tip is that by leaving this growth it protects the new shoots emerging for this coming spring. In between these weather fronts it has been nice to get out into our gardens even just for an hour, wrap up! don't forget your favourite cuppa it really makes such a difference. Have you noticed the nights are slowly starting to draw out? things are starting to wake up as the spring bulbs make an appearance and, in some places, the earlydaffodils are in bloom, verities such as February Gold and Early Sensation. Hellebores, which I absolutely love are showing plenty of colour at the moment and the first thing to be flowering in my garden, but don't forget to trim off the tatty and dead leaf just leaving the flowers as this will really showcase the flowers and they won't be hidden by the leaf, it's such a good tip!. February is the month for the Snowdrop so enjoy what colour you have in your garden and Spring is on the way! But to kick off here are some jobs to be getting on with this month...

• Lift and divide snowdrops once they have flowered and ‘still in the green’ if you want to move them or create more plants

• Continue to plant bare-root trees, shrubs and roses as long as the ground is not frozen or waterlogged

• Mulch perennial vegetables such as asparagus and artichokes with well-rotted manure or garden compost

• Start chitting early potatoes - stand them on end in a module tray or egg box and place them in a bright, cool, frost-free place

• Start sowing vegetable seeds such as leeks , onions and celeriac under cover

The Joy Of Snowdrops

One of the first flowers to see as we go into the new year, the Snowdrop and when they are in flower we know that the brighter days of spring are on the way. It is an herbaceous plant that belongs to the family Amaryllidaceae. There are 20 different species ofsnowdrops that originate from Europe and Asia and some species are listed as vulnerable or even endangered. Snowdrops are most commonly seen in our parks and gardens, they always put a show on what ever the weather throws at them and can be seen in small clumps or in larger drifts. There are many uses for snowdrops they are perfect for naturalising in grass, under planting of winter shrubs and trees, planted in patio pots, or small clumps in a rock garden and drifts in larger gardens and parks. So what ever size your garden is to always make a space for these little early gems and if not, there are many Snowdrop gardens and walks around the country during the next month to visit and our first garden trip of the year is dedicated to these winter favourites. Snowdrops prefer well-drained, fertile soil and habitats that provide full or partial sunlightif you would like to get in touch with a question or a story, drop me a line at gardenersteve24@live.co.uk

See you next time and Happy Gardening Everyone!

The snowdrop and primrose our woodlands adorn, And violets bathe in the wet o’ the morn. Robert

Fair-handed Spring unbosoms every grace; Throws out the snowdrop and crocus first, The daisy, primrose, violet darkly blue, And polyanthus of unnumbered dyes, The yellow wallflower, stained with iron brown. James

New £741k Library Learning Facility on the horizon for Stapleford

An exciting project to create a new £741k educational facility for people in Stapleford will begin next month. e Library Learning Facility project is one of six regeneration projects being funded through the £21.1m Stapleford Towns Stapleford Library Fund.

e existing town library, owned by the County Council, and run by Inspire will be remodelled, creating more space for new entry level skills education and training, allowing residents with little or no formal quali cations to take their rst step, within their local community, on their lifelong learning journey.Inspire, which delivers culture, learning and libraries on behalf of Nottinghamshire County Council, aims to support up to 1,000 local people with new skills over the next three years as well as providing community and family learning opportunities.

e recon guration will be delivered by Inspire with the Arc Partnership, a joint venture between Nottinghamshire County Council and SCAPE formed in 2016 to support and develop their property portfolio.

Phase one will begin in mid-March to create three new training rooms opening in June 2023.

e library layout will be updated to make way for the learning facilities but will still accommodate the same amount of book stock as well as computers, oor space for children and exhibitions.Ian Jowett, Chair of the Stapleford Towns Board, said: “It’s great news that our plans have been approved to improve the education and learning provision in our town and help our people ful l their learning and earning potential. e library’s a great local resource and this project will give it a new lease of life, making sure it remains at the heart of our great community.”

Peter Gaw Inspire CEO commented: “We are excited to have this opportunity to improve education and learning for local residents to ful l their learning and earning potential. We are delighted that we can provide three new learning spaces without compromising the library o er. We hope the new facilities will attract users new and old to use the space whether it be for learning, borrowing, events or community use.”

Councillor John Cottee, Cabinet Member for Communities at Nottinghamshire County Council commented; “ e development of new learning spaces and our expanded learning o er at Stapleford library is a great opportunity for local residents to improve their skills and wellbeing on their doorstep. With a focus on entry level skills, we hope to see lots of learners start their learning journey with Inspire improving their employment prospects.”

During the closure starting 28 February until June, Stapleford residents can continue to use library services at any library across the county. e nearest libraries are Toton Library 1.8 miles, Inham Nook Library 2.9 miles, or Beeston Library 3.2 miles. From Monday 6 March, Toton Library’s opening hours will be temporarily increased, visit inspireculture.org.uk/libraries for more information. Let’s Optimize Your Heating

Did you know that turning down the flow temperature to 60°C on your condensing combi boiler can help you save up to 12% off your energy bills and reduce your carbon emissions?

A condensing combi boiler heats both your water and your central heating all from the same unit. They can be identified by 5 copper pipes coming out the bottom of the boiler. As well as having a positive impact on the planet, you can save an average of £178 without compromising on comfort, as your house will stay just as warm. If you live in Nottinghamshire and have a condensing combi boiler, the team from Nottingham Energy Partnership can visit your home for free to help make this change for you. Their team of specialists are on hand to explain the process and answer any questions that you may have. Our service is suitable for anyone living within the Nottinghamshire County Council area, particularly if you have any health conditions; have difficulty accessing your boiler; or are concerned about making any changes to your boiler. Need help prioritising your bills?

With energy prices and household costs increasing, it is understandable that it can feel easier to avoid facing up to debt problems but leaving debt to mount up will only make it worse. If you’re struggling to pay your bills, it’s important to make sure you pay the most important ones first. There are more serious consequences of not paying certain bills than there are for others.

Most suppliers have funds that can help pay off debt and sometimes help with your ongoing bills. If you’re struggling to pay your energy bills, check your supplier’s website or give them a call

HAKE WITH ORANGE

Method

Heat the olive oil in a large shallow casserole and cook the onions, peppers and courgettes over a high heat for 10 minutes until charred and softened, then turn down the heat to medium and add the chorizo. Cook for 5 minutes until the chorizo is starting to crisp. Add the paprika and cook for 30 seconds before pouring in the wine. Simmer for 2 minutes then add the stock.

Ingredients

3 tbsp olive oil

2 onions, thinly sliced

1 of each red and yellow peppers, cut into strips

2 courgettes, halved and sliced

200g chorizo, skinned and cubed

2 tsp smoked paprika

200ml white wine

250ml chicken stock

1 orange

4 hake fillets - (you could use cod )

a handful chopped flat-leaf parsley(optional)

Remove the peel from the orange, then cut it into ½cm slices. Put this on top of the vegetables in the pan.Place the hake fillets on top of the orange slices, season and reduce the heat to a simmer. Put on the lid and simmer for approx 8-10 minutes or until the hake is just cooked through.

Scatter over the parsley and serve with crusty bread and a salad, if you like.

38 PLEASE MENTION GRAPEVINE WHEN RESPONDING TO ADVERTISEMENTS .

Helpful Cooking Tips

1. Add brown (or white) sugar to your tomato sauce in the pan, to make the flavour more richer and tasty.

2. Season cold foods more than hot foods, you could use sea salt. In salads mix a sweet and also a sour vinegar together to get more taste in your salad dressing dressing.

3. Rinse rice before cooking it, to avoid a gloopy soggy mess

4. When making pastry, grate the butter first instead of chopping , makes it easier to add to the pastry mix.

5. Don’t add pasta in a pan until the water is boiling, putting pasta in too soon causes it to become gummy and sticky.

6. Dropping vinegar into a pan of water makes it easier to shell an hard boiled egg, use more vinegar if boiling a few together.

7. Always stir fry onions first before adding garlic, as garlic can burn quicker.

8. Before peeling garlic always smash a clove with a knife or other object, this makes it easier to peel and doesn’t get in your nails.

9. If using an Oxo cube, before opening the silver foil, press down gently until it expands out and then cut the top, saves getting it all over your hands!

Bumblebees flying at the end of February and early March

When we get warm spells at the end of winter, you will notice big bumblebees slowly flying around.

These are Queens that have woken up from hibernation and are looking for nectar from early flowering plants like Polyanthus, Daffodils and Aconites. When they have got their strength back, they will be looking for somewhere to make a nest.

There are several species of Bumblebee; most will be looking to build a nest underground.

You can help them by providing an artificial nesting site. There is no need to worry about bees near the house; they are gentle and harmless unless you actually squeeze them.

Bees are declining for all sorts of reasons, if we can help them we should.

How to make an artificial bee nest

Take a plant pot (about 6 inches across if possible), terracotta is best but plastic will do. Dig a hole in the ground big enough to sink ¾ of the pot (large end) below ground level. Fill the pot loosely with dried grass, moss or leaves and place in the ground. Put the earth back so the small drainage hole in the bottom of the pot stands proud of the ground. Its best to site the 'nest' in amongst plants - don't put it in an open space. You can put several around your garden, with luck one will be occupied by a Bumble bee. I had one nesting and I hardly noticed it was there, but they will be working hard pollinating flowers and most importantly fruit trees. They don't produce hundreds of workers like Honey bees and they are not aggressive if you go near the nest.

Do your bit!

It's difficult to stress how important bees are. Every third mouthful of food you eat will have been pollinated by bees. Einstein said 'If we lose the bees, then we will follow'.

So, help save mankind and the planet - make a bee nest!

If you do get a bee to nest take a photo and send to us via email at info@beestonwildlifegroup.org so we can identify the species and tell you more.

Breakthrough treatment for DRY AMD eye problems now available locally

As we age, our sight tends to become less clear, and some of us will develop what is known as “Dry Age-related Macular Degeneration”. When this happens, the central area of our vision darkens and becomes blurred, making it difficult to see detail, and preventing activities such as driving, reading, watching TV, using computers, tablets, and so on. Even recognising faces can prove difficult.

Until recently, there were no effective treatments for Dry AMD, the only suggestions being lifestyle changes or dietary supplements. Now, sufferers will be delighted to learn that there is a newly developed treatment available locally. It is a safe, non-invasive, painless therapy which is fully approved under European and UK directives.

This breakthrough treatment is known as photobiomodulation (PBT or PBM) and uses a cold laser system to produce low levels of red, yellow and infra-red light to stimulate the centre of vision by energising and providing oxygen for cell repair.

Results from extensive monitored trials of the therapy show that for many Dry AMD sufferers, there can

be an improvement in sharpness of vision corresponding to some 5 or 8 extra letters on the testing chart.

This therapy has also been shown to help diabetics who have certain eye problems related to their diabetes.

Dr Sheeraz Janjua carries out advanced eye examinations which includes OCT scans of the retina and is now providing PBM treatment at his special clinics held regularly at Flynn’s Opticians in Beeston.

Please call 0115 925 5051 or 0115 939 2421 to arrange an appointment.

“Would recommend Flynn’s wholeheartedly, very professional and knowledgeable and excellent service from all staff.”

Mrs E Hartley

“The treatment was very quick, painless and easy. Improvement of vision it was clearer, new spectacle lenses were needed to allow for improved vision. Very friendly staff and we are very fortunate to have this treatment locally.”

S.Clarke

“I’d had no sight loss as yet with my AMD but I did notice an improvement on my Amsler test – less wavy lines and greyness after treatment.

THANKYOU!! Dr Janjua is so thorough and took time to explain my sight and AMD. Wendy and Sonia were so warm and friendly plus professional when giving the treatment.”

NEW!

Grow your business with Grapevine

Grapevine Magazines are expanding by Christine Gough - Editor

Grapevine in Erewash is to be launched in April this year.

Covid and uncertainty held back the possibility of the launch of Grapevine in Erewash, an additional magazine to Grapevine in NG9 and Grapevine in Wollaton and Bramcote already in circulation. Now that local businesses and tradespeople are hopefully back to full potential, Beech Publications in Sandiacre, will now publish, print and deliver 15,000 of this new magazine to cover parts of the Erewash areasSandiacre, Long Eaton and Ilkeston. This magazine will be launched in April 2023. As a resident in Sandiacre, I am fortunate that I am in the middle of the areas that Grapevine already covers, literally no more than 15 minutes away from the areas we already deliver to: Chilwell, Stapleford, Attenborough, Beeston, Trowell, Toton, Wollaton and Bramcote, and now Sandiacre, Ilkeston and Long Eaton. Established since 2008, Grapevine has grown from strength to strengh , giving local businesses and communities the chance to promote at reasonable cost. With high fuel prices and people watching their money carefully, it makes sense to use local tradespeople and businesses. Please get in touch if you are interested in advertising in this new one, discounts are given if you advertise in all the Grapevines. Promotional editorials , marketing advice and website design packages are also available .

Bus Fare reductions in Nottingham.

Until 30 June 2023, a single fare on all buses in Nottingham will cost just £2. Bus operators in Nottingham are temporarily introducing a £2 single fare on all services, thanks to the Government’s Help for Households campaign. All bus operators in Nottingham are taking part in the scheme including:

Nottingham City Transport - Trentbarton - Linkbus and Medilink - CT4N- KinchbusMarshall’s - Stagecoach

Nottingham’s trams are not included in the £2 fare cap, but the City Council are lobbying the Government to include the award-winning tram system in this scheme. The scheme hopes to help families save money during cost of living pressures and encourage people to swap their cars for bus journeys. During the campaign, it’s hoped that millions of cars will be taken off the road. This will reduce carbon emissions whilst encouraging greater bus use to help the bus industry in its continued efforts to recover from the pandemic. Who is covering the costs of the discounted bus fares?

The Government’s Help for Households campaign is investing £75m to enable local bus operators outside of London to cap their single bus fares at £2. Where a discounted fare is provided to the passenger, the Government will cover the difference. Meaning if a single fare usually costs £2.50, the Government will provide the bus operator with the 50p difference. Which routes are included?

All local bus routes operating in Nottingham are included in the scheme. This includes services that cross over into neighbouring Nottinghamshire and Derby areas. Services excluded from the scheme include trentbarton’s red arrow service and dedicated school services.

Do I have to use cash to benefit from the discounted single fare?

No, you don’t have to use cash. Whilst cash will be accepted for the £2 single fare, the discounted ticket will also be available on Contactless, Robin Hood Pay-As-You-Go cards, and on operator mobile apps (such as the NCTX Buses app or the Mango app).

If you are using cash, just ask the driver for the £2 adult single. And remember, the exact fare will be needed.

How do I get the £2 single fare using Contactless?

If you usually use your credit or debit card to travel on Nottingham’s buses, you don’t need to do anything. Just tap your card or device onto the reader and the system will automatically offer you the correct fare.

How do I get the £2 single fare using Robin Hood Pay-As-You-Go?

If you usually use Robin Hood Pay-As-You-Go travel on Nottingham’s buses, you don’t need to do anything. Tap your card onto the reader when you board the bus and the system will automatically offer you the correct fare. You can get two single trips for £2 each. Once you travel for a third time, you will be charged the Robin Hood day cap (this ranges from £4.70 to £5.70 depending on the operator(s) you use).

“Bus travel remains the most popular form of public transport in England, making up around half of all journeys. That’s why we’re investing £60 million to cap single bus fares at £2 to support every passenger and help get people back on the bus. With the scheme set to take two million car journeys off the road, it’s fantastic to see so many bus operators signing up to the fare cap, helping people to ‘Get Around for £2.’” Buses Minister Richard Holden

Mayor of Broxtowe Plants Tree of Trees Honouring Queen Elizabeth's Memory

The Mayor of Broxtowe took part in a special tree planting event with the Lord-Lieutenant of Nottinghamshire, accompanied by children from Foxwood Academy.

The tree was planted at Bramcote Hills Park (at the entrance to the Walled Garden). The Hazel tree is from the 21 metre ‘Tree of Trees’ sculpture designed by Thomas Heatherwick that featured as part of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations. The tree was planted alongside 1000 bulbs which will bloom from late winter all the way through to summer.

Councillor Grindell said: “Today we are honouring Queen Elizabeth’s memory by caring for the environment and bringing the community together. It is a privilege to be involved in The Queen’s Green Canopy initiative. Hazel trees are historically associated with wisdom and authority, and is a fitting memorial to her Majesty.”

Sir John Peace, Lord Lieutenant of Nottinghamshire, commented: “The Queen is dearly missed but this is a wonderful way to continue her legacy. This will help continue to encourage our communities to plant trees and do what they can to help protect the environment, demonstrating her compassion for both the people and nature itself.”

The planting event was part of The Queens Green Canopy initiative, in honour of the Platinum Jubilee of the late Queen Elizabeth II and is one of 350 trees that featured in the Platinum Jubilee ‘tree of trees’. A commemorative plaque for the Queen’s Green Canopy was installed to mark the occasion. The planting event marked the fourth site in the Borough to be registered under the “The Queens Green Canopy" initiative.

What climate change is and what impact it is having on Broxtowe and beyond.

What is climate change?

Our World is getting warmer!

On the 19th July 2022, the UK recorded its hottest ever temperature of 40.3OC with the summer of 2022 being the fourth hottest summer on record.

Climate change refers to long-term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns. These shifts may be natural, such as through variations in the solar cycle, but since the 1800s, human activities (such as heating our homes, buying goods and travel) have become the main driver of climate change. This has primarily been due to the burning of fossil fuels like coal, oil and gas. Gases released from fossil fuels trap heat from the sun, increasing the average temperature of the earth, which in turn causes more frequent and extreme weather events such as heatwaves and heavy downpours.

How is Climate Change affecting Broxtowe?

Over the last ten years Broxtowe has experienced some significant disruption due to extreme weather events:Significant flooding has caused damage to a number of streets and properties throughout the borough

• Heatwaves have melted roads and caused fires in green spaces

• Snow and Ice have disrupted bin collections across the borough

To see in detail how climate change might affect the area where you live the Met Office and the BBC have created a post code checker

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-62243280

Did you know that there are six main greenhouse gases set out in the Kyoto protocol?

Climate Change Carbon Emissions CO2e explanation

These gases are:

Carbon Dioxide

Methane

Nitrous Oxide

Hydrofluorocarbons

Perfluorocarbons

Sulphur Hexafluoride

These gases are converted to Carbon Dioxide Equivalent or ‘CO2e’ and are referred to as carbon emissions.

Exhibition delves into D.H. Lawrence’s difficult relationship with publishers.

An exhibition will open at the D.H. Lawrence Birthplace Museum next month, tracing the ways in which the Eastwood born writer found his writing amended and censored and how he found innovative ways to respond to this.

The exhibition, ‘Editing D.H. Lawrence’ will open in the Gallery Space at the D.H. Lawrence Birthplace Museum on 2nd February until 27 May 2023. Lawrence is an iconic figure in English literature, but also one of the most controversial. He struggled with publishers throughout his career to express himself in the form he wanted and the exhibition showcases some of his unusual ways of overcoming this. Whilst Lawrence never gave up on mainstream publishing, he used private publications when needed. Lawrence also paid great attention to the design involved in his private publications. He designed his own iconic phoenix emblem for the cover of some of his editions. That is why today, the phoenix emblem can be found all over Eastwood.

“Lawrence used printers in Paris and Florence to privately publish his more controversial work,” said Carolyn Melbourne, Museum and Collections Officer at the D.H. Birthplace Museum.

“These days, authors can use the internet, they can publish digitally and through things like social media they can get their works and message into the public domain."

Andrew Harrison, Director of D.H. Lawrence Research Centre said: “This exhibition demonstrates Lawrence’s belligerence before the censors and ingenuity in developing ways to get his voice heard, through private publication and negotiations with mainstream publishers.”

'Editing D.H. Lawrence' is curated by Manuscripts and Special Collections and Dr. Andrew Harrison, Director of the D.H. Lawrence Research Centre in the School of English at the University of Nottingham, with contributions by Emeritus Professor John Worthen.

This is a second chance to see exhibition material curated for an exhibition at Nottingham’s Lakeside Arts in 2022.

Nottingham becomes the lastest area to fly the flag.

Nottingham has been awarded the prestigious Purple Flag accreditation for its evening and night-time economy.

It is a recognition of the city’s vibrant and diverse mix of dining, entertainment and culture, while promoting the safety and wellbeing of visitors and local residents. Similar to the Blue Flag for beaches, the Purple Flag aims to raise the standard and broaden the appeal of town and city centres between the hours of 5pm and 5am. In awarding the Purple Flag to Nottingham, governing body Association of Town and City Management (ATCM) highlighted the work being done through Nottingham’s Safe Space Pledge, which delivers practical solutions to reduce the vulnerability of women visiting the city’s night-time economy. The Safe Space Pledge, which was developed by the Consent Coalition in partnership with Nottingham Business Improvement District (BID), and the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner, provides eight clear actions and commitments Nottingham venues can take to improve the safety of women and girls within their premises. Also recognised was Nottingham’s investment in first aid measures for the evening and night-time economy, and the high standard of transport in the city, including the focus on environmentally-conscious transport methods.

Councillor Neghat Khan, Portfolio Holder for Neighbourhoods, Safety and Inclusion at Nottingham City Council, said: “I’m pleased that we’ve secured Purple Flag status in Nottingham once again. It is great to see us recognised for what local people know: our city centre is a safe, fun, and well looked after place to spend time.

“This is a result of continued partnership working between the Council, Nottingham BID, Nottinghamshire Police and others who put so much effort into making Nottingham such a welcoming destination. Being awarded another Purple Flag is a fantastic achievement for our city.”Alex Flint, CEO of Nottingham BID said: “We are delighted that Nottingham BID has once again achieved Purple Flag status for the city and maintained its reputation as a safe, vibrant destination. The success of this project is a testament to effective partnership working in Nottingham. I would like to extend our sincere gratitude to all those who have contributed their time and energy to support this worthwhile initiative for the city.Promoting a safe and diverse nightlife is key to celebrating Nottingham’s national reputation and it’s inspiring to see our restaurants, venues, bars and clubs at the heart of Nottingham’s well-respected culture.”

Nottinghamshire Police and Crime Commissioner Caroline Henry said:

“Nottingham’s accreditation as a Purple Flag city means it has been independently benchmarked as being a safe and enjoyable place to have a night out.

“It is fantastic to get the recognition for the incredible work that goes on behind the scenes to make that happen. It is not by accident. Far from it. It takes dedication, careful planning, teamwork and determination to ensure people can visit such a busy place, have a

52 PLEASE MENTION GRAPEVINE WHEN RESPONDING TO ADVERTISEMENTS .

great time, and go home safely.

“Nottinghamshire Police, Nottingham City Council, Nottingham BID, all of the licensed venues and many, many other partners play a part in this.“I’m really proud that Nottingham’s Safe Space Pledge has been praised as part of this award, for its efforts to safeguard women and girls. This is just one example of one of the many partnership initiatives that make Nottingham the city it is.”

Chief Inspector Amy English, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “I am delighted and very proud that Nottingham retained its Purple Flag status. It’s a really impressive achievement and shows that police and partners are working well to ensure the city centre is an attractive and safe destination.

“We are fortunate to have strong partnerships with the Nottingham BID and Nottingham City Council and we work closely with them to understand what issues are affecting the communities in the city and how best to tackle them.

“The Purple Flag accreditation is testament to the hard work of a number of agencies and I am pleased that we have played our part to ensure that we kept that status as a city.

“This status obviously does not mean we are crime free but partnership working and relentless efforts mean we have made significant reductions of 22.7% when compared with pre-pandemic levels in the city centre.

“All I would ask from the public is they continue to report incidents to us so we can understand any issues occurring in the city as they occur so we can take appropriate action.”

The Utopia Strong Biography.

British prog-electronica trio the Utopia Strong -improbably featuring six-time world snooker champion Steve Davis on modular synth -- combine prog, Krautrock, and contemporary electronica on their 2019 eponymous debut album.

Davis was the king of snooker during the '80s. In an era when the sport was dominated by hard-living wild men like Alex "Hurricane" Higgins and Jimmy White, his wholesome, buttoned-up, no-nonsense style saw him cruelly lampooned as the world's dullest man, particularly by the British satirical comedy puppet show Spitting Image, which ironically dubbed him "Mr. Interesting." Davis had the last laugh, however, cleaning up at the baize to the tune of six world trophies. But behind his boring image, Davis was in fact a switched-on music fan, recognized by those in the know for his love of prog rock, jazzfunk, and soul. He famously booked French prog titans Magma out of his own pocket to play three sold-out nights at London's Bloomsbury Theatre, and he later became a successful DJ in his own right with the radio show Interesting Alternative on Essex local radio station Phoenix FM. Davis' co-presenter on the show was storied Gong and Cardiacs guitarist Kavus Torabi, whom he had met at a Magma gig.

Davis' already catholic taste grew to encompass contemporary electronica, and in 2016 he took up the modular synth. Davis and Torabi met Coil's Michael J. York after the 2017 Glastonbury Festival where they had DJ'ed, and the trio decided to form a band. Starting in a spirit of experimentation, and with no preconceived notions of what the final product would be like, they effortlessly created a unique, hypnotic musical journey combining elements of prog, Krautrock, and contemporary electronica. Their eponymous debut album was released by Rocket Recordings in 2019. While largely instrumental, it featured a guest vocal appearance by Mediæval Bæbes' Katharine Blake.

Isolation and loneliness can happen to anyone, at any time and at any age, and since the pandemic and lockdown many of us have felt this. But the good news is there are plenty of coffee mornings around, and groups to join locally!

Groups to join

St Leonard’s Community Centre, Wollaton - Tuesday morning 10.00-11.30

British Legion for Hug a Mug coffee – Tuesday mornings from 11.00 onwards

Kingswood (10.00-11.00) and Grangewood (11.00-12.00)Wollaton churches hold coffee mornings on Wednesday mornings

Wollaton Park Community Centre’s coffee (and cake) cafe is open on Thursday mornings 9.00-12.00.

Not everyone has the confidence or mobility to get out on their own but a recent project that has taken off is the Smile Project, which aims to provide befrienders for anyone who would appreciate a bit of support. Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance (LNAA) will soon say goodbye to home grown pilot Ben Hare as he leaves the life-saving charity to embark on a new adventure with his wife caring for cheetahs in South Africa. He said: “My wife has been given an opportunity to do some conservation-based field research in South Africa working with cheetahs. We met on a similar project, 5 years ago, and having worked with these beautiful cats before, it was probably only a matter of time before Africa called one of us again.”

Since Ben can remember, he has always desired to work within a Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS). In fact, so keen was he to be a member of the LNAA crew that he applied to join two years before a position became available! “My parents are farmers, and I would see helicopters land on neighbouring farms to attend agricultural accidents, so I realise the value that the service has to our county, especially with its poor road network.”

Ben joined LNAA in 2021 and has flown over 170 life-saving missions taking doctors and paramedics to all corners of Lincolnshire & Nottinghamshire and transporting some of the most critically ill patients to hospitals across the counties and beyond. One tasking on Christmas Eve, 2022 is burned into his memory. He recalls: “Our team was activated to attend a cardiac arrest near Grantham. We were the first medical resource to arrive and after treating the patient, we flew him to Lincoln County Hospital. It was certainly the speed of our helicopter and the immediate intervention from our highly skilled HEMS medics that played a pivotal role in the patient survival.”

Chief Pilot Llewis Ingamells valued the impact Ben has made at LNAA. He said: “Ben is a true 'Lincolnshire Lad' and will be immensely missed. Not only a superb pilot, Ben is also one of a small number of people internationally qualified to service and repair our state-of-the-art night vision goggles in-house.”

Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance pilot swaps Lincolnshire fens for South African bush.

Ben will keep a hand in flying helicopters alongside supporting his wife’s work as he has taken a flight role in oil and gas support, something he did prior to joining LNAA.

He sums up his experience working with LNAA: “I am grateful for the opportunity to serve at LNAA and to my colleagues for the comradery and friendship over the last 18 months. It is known to be difficult to find work with an Air Ambulance close to your home, and many pilots travel across counties to serve with one. I hope that when my personal situation allows me to return to the UK, an opportunity at LNAA will again present itself. I would certainly love to come back and serve the people of my county”.

ABOUT LNAA

LNAA is one of the UK’s leading Helicopter Emergency Service (HEMS) charities, bringing the equivalent of a hospital emergency department to patients at the scene, giving those with the most severe injuries and medical conditions the very best chance of survival when minutes matter.LNAA crews are on call 24 hours of the day, 365 days of the year. The highly skilled doctors, paramedics and pilots help people across Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire, involved in life-threatening incidents every single day. LNAA receives no regular direct funding from the Government. It needs to raise £8 million this year to deliver its life-saving service every hour of the day. It is thanks to the generosity and goodwill of supporters throughout the area that they can provide such a critical care service. For more details on how to support this vital work, visit www.ambucopter.org.uk

Preventing suicide is everybody’s business: one in five people have suicidal thoughts at some point in their life. Most of us may have been affected by suicide in some way either directly or indirectly. Suicide is not inevitable and can be prevented.

Self-harm is when somebody intentionally harms or injures their body. It’s often a way of coping and/or expressing overwhelming emotional distress. The severity of self-harm is not linked to the level of distress. Self-harm can affect anyone of any age. Self-harm can be a risk factor for suicide, but not everyone who self-harms will take their own life. It’s important not to make assumptions, but it’s important to let someone who selfharms know that it’s safe to talk about self-harm and suicide.

Harmless provide support for people who self-harm and those close to them. You can call 0115 880 0280, or email info@harmless.org.uk.
