e new Carbon Neutral Nottingham website has been launched.

A new website has been launched by Nottingham City Council to supportNottingham’s ambition to be the rst carbon neutral city in the UK by 2028.

e Carbon Neutral Nottingham website brings together in one place a range of information about what is happening to make the city more sustainable. e website aims to o er practical advice and opportunities for residents to reduce their own carbon footprints. ere are dedicated sections for each of the nine key themes of the city’s Carbon Neutral Action Plan – Buildings, Energy, Transport, Waste, Water, Stu , Protecting the City, Nature, and Removing Carbon From the Atmosphere.Tackling the climate crisis is one of Nottingham City Council’s key priorities. e Earth’s average temperature has increased dramatically over the past 100 years, and 2022 was the UK’s hottest year on record. During the heatwave in July 2022,temperatures reached 40.3 degrees Celsius in neighbouring Lincolnshire, which is the highest temperature recorded in the UK. Our changing climate is largely driven by the burning of fossil fuels – for example when we drive petrol or diesel vehicles, y in planes and heat our homes using gas. ese activities increase the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and cause the planet to warm. e City Council is directly responsible for just 3% of Nottingham’s carbon dioxide emissions, so it is vital that everyone in the city does what they can to reduce their environmental impact. Having a dedicated space to share information on the city’s carbon neutral ambition makes it easy for residents, businesses, and visitors to understand how they can get involved in making the city a more environmentally friendly place to live, work and visit.

Councillor David Mellen, Leader of the Council and Portfolio Holder for Carbon Neutral Nottingham, said: “ e Carbon Neutral Nottingham website is a fantastic resource. Explaining the city’s ambition and getting people in Nottingham involved is a key part of our plan. e site will make it easy for people to understand why reducing the city’s carbon emissions is important and how they can get involved.

“We’re making progress on delivering the actions set out in our Carbon Neutral Action Plan, but we need to get everyone involved in taking steps to reduce their own environmental impact if we’re to achieve our target of becoming a carbon neutral city by 2028. I hope that bringing information from across the city together into one place helps people to understand how their actions will make a di erence and motivates them to do what they can to reduce their emissions. Everyone’s actions make a di erence, no matter how big or small.”

In The Garden With Gardener Steve

Welcome to this month's gardening, as I sit here and write this month's article, we are yet again experiencing a quite a lot of rain with few quick storms thrown in and then it all evaporates minutes later! But I hope you all have a good summer !

I have recently had a few days in London exploring the capital's green scene of all its’ fauna and ora with visits to Hyde Park, Kensington Gardens and surrounding green pocket parks and the city street tree's - So much to see at every turn.

Here are some jobs to be getting on with your garden...

• Pick runner beans regularly to prevent them becoming stringy and to make room for developing beans.

• Keep on top of weeds as they compete with plants for nutrients and water.

• Stake tall or top-heavy Dahlias and Lilies to prevent wind and rain damage.

• Keep patio container plants well-watered and feed with a liquid high potash fertiliser every fortnight.

• Trim your lavender plants a er they’ve nished owering to keep them compact.

• Continue to feed tomato plants with a tomato fertiliser and remove leaves lower down on the plant to help with air circulation and prevent disease.

• Dead-heading is an important job this month - bedding plants, perennials and roses to stop them self-seeding, encourage further owering and improves

• appearance of plant.

• Apply a high-potash fertiliser such as tomato food once fruits start to form on peppers, cucumber and aubergines.

• Pinch out the top of tomato plants to concentrate the growth into the fruit that has already formed. Aim to leave 5 or 6 trusses of fruit per plant.

Summer Star plants!

ECHINACEA PURPUREA - Purple cone ower

Echinacea are clump-forming rhizomatous perennials with simple or pinnately lobed leaves and solitary, long-stalked daisies with prominent conical central disks attractive to butter ies. Echinacea purpurea is an upright perennial with coarsely hairy, ovate shaped leaves.

Flowering period: Summer

Good Soil Health- Na onal Allo ents Week. is year's National Allotments Week - 7th-13th August, and this year's theme is soil health. Good soil health is incredibly important for promoting plant growth but also increases biodiversity and acts as a carbon sink, helping to reduce the impacts of climate change.Allotments can act as green corridors, allowing species like hedgehogs and butter ies to move from place to place safely.

ey are also great for attracting pollinators like bees and butter ies, so why not give it a go and see what species you can spot!

Allotments aren't always easily accessible, but you can apply these tips and tricks in your own garden or space. Spring onions and salad greens can be grown easily indoors using the le over root. Simply soak the root in water and allow them plenty of natural light, then when they grow, trim o what you need.

Alternatively, grow some micro-greens or herbs on your windowsill in peat free compost, trim what you need then allow to grow again. You can grow these in just about anything, from seed trays to yoghurt pots! With the cost of living crisis driving up food prices, we are becoming more aware of how we spend money. O en, growing your own fruits and vegetables can be more a ordable than buying it from a supermarket. Gardening is also an excellent method to improve mental wellbeing.

Stapleford Town Council agrees to become a White Ribbon Supporter Organisation

At the meeting of Stapleford Town Council recently it was approved by all Councillors that Stapleford Town Council will become a White Ribbon Supporter Organisation. As an Ambassador for the White Ribbon Campaign I thought it was the right thing to put forward so I contacted Councillor Si Frost, I asked if he would support my motion to which he agreed. You can read below the motion that was put to Stapleford Town Council below:

32 PLEASE MENTION GRAPEVINE WHEN RESPONDING TO ADVERTISEMENTS .

Message from Councillor John McGrath - Stapleford.

Hi all, Firstly I would like to thank you for voting for Sue, Ross, Cat, Richard, Donna and myself to represent the town at Broxtowe Borough Council. A warm welcome to all the new town councillors. I hope we will all work together for the bene ts of everyone and the decisions we make are explained correctly and not through social media. e process of obtaining the £21 million and the criteria for the projects was set by the government, health both mental and physical, education, employment and the growth of our town. All of these are there to be seen - watch this space. e cycle track for the young children which was opened on 3rd July by Chris Boardman MBE. Cycle routes around the town, the library for new education opportunities, the Enterprise hub for new businesses and employment. Hickings Lane was granted planning permission back in May, this will see many opportunities for the health and wellbeing of people in the area. Banking facilities are moving and we are working hard with the Post O ce to solve that problem, but Rome wasn't built in a day! On Sunday 2nd July it was good to see the Food Market in Stapleford, we need to look at more dates, more stalls on the ursday market to bring folk into the town. I should know the result of the new bus routes, 18 and 21, in the near future. I am handing two petitions in for residential parking on Albert Ave, and tra c calming measures on Moorbridge Lane. anks to Donna, Richard, Claire and Paul for organising them. Finally, well done to Stapleford football club seniors for winning the Notts Senior Cup and League Double, the rst time it was played for was 1908 and won by the team we all remember was Stapleford Brookhill. e 2nd team won the Notts Junior Cup. Yours, Cllr. John McGrath (Maggie)

Ideas to keep the kids entertained this Summer

Firstly, check out any play days in your area, these are usually free with plenty to do.

1. Collect and paint pet or themed rocks (or make a village with houses etc)

2. Go birdwatching, take a camera and then look for information back at home.

3. Go on a picnic.

4. Buy a skipping rope or hula hoop and set a time record competition .

5. Make rose water from the fallen summer petals. Give them a pestle and mortar to mix up and grind their leaves and petals in. Give them a jug of water a little jars so that they can make petal perfume or potions with them.

6. Play pirates and hide a treasure chest in the garden, use brown paper and draw a map. An alternative treasure hunt is with directional clues – a great one is placing the kid’s teddies, or their toys, in spots for them to nd and make the clues about them. You can also do it by nding di erent colour items or objects beginning with certain letters. Or, one of the simplest ways to create a treasure hunt for toddlers is to print and laminate a load of images of something that they love, such as dinosaurs or wizards. Hide them around the garden and tell them how many there are to nd! You can tailor them for your kid’s interests, ages and abilities, make them as short or long, easy or complicated!

7. Make friends with a bug: Ladybirds, spiders, caterpillars, woodlice – there are all kinds of creepy crawlies hiding in all out door places . Just remember to be gentle if you pick them up, and then place them back . Start a nature diary -draw pictures and learn about what you have seen.

8. Do a wild challenge with the RSPB- great fun whilst learning - visit: https://www.rspb.org.uk/fun-and-learning/for-families/family-wild-challenge/

9. Build a den in the garden. Make a wigwam type with bamboo canes then use old sheets- duvet covers. Make a tent with chairs. Make a tent under a table indoors if raining. Have lunch or tea in the den.

10. Set up your own mini festival – better if you have a larger garden but even if not you can set up di erent stations around your garden; like a story area, an art area, a hair braiding area, a face painting area, a splash zone, a relaxing zone and a refreshments area!

11. Try and go to as many parks in your area, get the kids to mark each park out of 10.

12. Visit a National trust property – e National trust has hundreds of places all over the UK and the majority of them are a full and packed day out of fun with lots having family activities going on in the holidays. Most of them have brilliant adventure playgrounds which are worth the visit in themselves.

46 PLEASE MENTION GRAPEVINE WHEN RESPONDING TO ADVERTISEMENTS .

13.Get the bikes out and go for a ride. If you don’t have bikes, many local forests or bike trails have bike hire facilities. Cycling is great exercise and you get to see the place where you are cycling much better than you can from the window of a car.

14. Be a tourist in your own town. Visit your local monuments and museums. If you live near a big tourist town take a bus and see your hometown from a new perspective.

15. Make your own jigsaws by cutting out pictures from magazines, sticking them onto card and cutting them up.

16. Try and visit a wood near you Woods and forests are magical for children, lots of interesting things to see and nd. Tree shade is most welcome on a hot day, and a great way to keep cool. Check out woods near you on the internet.

17. Carry a pack of snap cards for younger kids, keeps them engaged.

19. Go to a museum – lots of museums in the UK have free entry and during the holidays most have activities going on including workshops and events which are o en free to attend too. It’s worth checking out smaller and less well known museums o en too.

20. Arrange a day out at the seaside and take a picnic, look for bus trips where you can meet up with other families.

21. All kids love water, especially on a hot day, have a water ght, if they are going to get wet, get them to wash their bikes, dolls, dinosaurs -any toys etc.

22. For younger ones, give them a plastic bowl or empty toy box lled with water place rocks and let them experiment with food colouring and marvel at the changes, add boats and sea toys.

23. Look for o ers.Not everyone has the money to go to places like Alton Towers etc, look for o ers online, or on supermarket o ers.

24. Visit your local libary, they usually have lots of information of free events and activities in your area.

25. Make a work of art from natural things, leaves twigs etc.

26. Get cra y with a cardboard box. Make a car, robot or a dolls house etc.

27. Play frisbee in a park or garden.

28 . Pick blackberries in late summer and make a pie.

29. Have a mini Olympics in the garden. Javelin with straws, shot put with balls. Make medal for the winners.

30. Learn a magic trick.

31. Learn to say “Hello” and “Goodbye” in 10 languages.

32. Make a time capsule with collected items.

33. Try potato printing.

34. Go swimming, some local swimming centre have in atables, check with your local leisure centre.

35. Organise a play, dress up and act out favourite characters.

36. Rainy day?- play board games. (checkout local charity shops for games you haven’t already got).

37. Have a toy clear out and get them to sort out ones they no longer play with, arrange a toy sale, or add to a car boot sale , they’ll be keen to sell in order to buy new ones..

38. Make nature sticky bracelets -Pop some masking tape or thick duck tape round your toddler’s wrist, with the sticky side facing outwards. On a walk in the park or in the garden, ask them to nd leaves, seeds and owers to stick to their bracelets. Get them to identify the items and record them in their nature diary.

39. On a car journey - Play the ‘yes / no’ game. You have a conversation but the other person is not allowed to say ‘yes or no’. You can ask them questions and try to trick them into saying one of these words. Its a great one to do anywhere and kids get really competitive with it! You can of course keep it going for much longer than 5 minutes.
