In The Garden With Gardener Steve

Welcome to this month's gardening, as I sit here and write this month's article, we are yet again experiencing a quite a lot of rain with few quick storms thrown in and then it all evaporates minutes later! But I hope you all have a good summer !

I have recently had a few days in London exploring the capital's green scene of all its’ fauna and ora with visits to Hyde Park, Kensington Gardens and surrounding green pocket parks and the city street tree's - So much to see at every turn.

Here are some jobs to be getting on with your garden...

• Pick runner beans regularly to prevent them becoming stringy and to make room for developing beans.

• Keep on top of weeds as they compete with plants for nutrients and water.

• Stake tall or top-heavy Dahlias and Lilies to prevent wind and rain damage.

• Keep patio container plants well-watered and feed with a liquid high potash fertiliser every fortnight.

• Trim your lavender plants a er they’ve nished owering to keep them compact.

• Continue to feed tomato plants with a tomato fertiliser and remove leaves lower down on the plant to help with air circulation and prevent disease.

• Dead-heading is an important job this month - bedding plants, perennials and roses to stop them self-seeding, encourage further owering and improves

• appearance of plant.

• Apply a high-potash fertiliser such as tomato food once fruits start to form on peppers, cucumber and aubergines.

• Pinch out the top of tomato plants to concentrate the growth into the fruit that has already formed. Aim to leave 5 or 6 trusses of fruit per plant.

Good Soil Health- Na onal Allo ents Week. is year's National Allotments Week - 7th-13th August, and this year's theme is soil health. Good soil health is incredibly important for promoting plant growth but also increases biodiversity and acts as a carbon sink, helping to reduce the impacts of climate change.Allotments can act as green corridors, allowing species like hedgehogs and butter ies to move from place to place safely.

ey are also great for attracting pollinators like bees and butter ies, so why not give it a go and see what species you can spot!

Allotments aren't always easily accessible, but you can apply these tips and tricks in your own garden or space. Spring onions and salad greens can be grown easily indoors using the le over root. Simply soak the root in water and allow them plenty of natural light, then when they grow, trim o what you need.

Alternatively, grow some micro-greens or herbs on your windowsill in peat free compost, trim what you need then allow to grow again. You can grow these in just about anything, from seed trays to yoghurt pots! With the cost of living crisis driving up food prices, we are becoming more aware of how we spend money. O en, growing your own fruits and vegetables can be more a ordable than buying it from a supermarket. Gardening is also an excellent method to improve mental wellbeing.

Eas ood Green Fes val.

Pop along to Coronation Park in Eastwood on Saturday 23rd September from 12pm until 3pm for a fun- lled family day out!

Green Festival is to to encourage recycling, sustainability and climate change awareness. ere will be something for all the family, including arts and cra s, free bicycle repairs, quizzes and local wildlife groups. You can even bring your dog along to win cutest puppy, best rescue and much more at our free dog show!

e event will be free to attend and there will also be delicious food and drink available to buy from popular, sustainable, local businesses.

Hello Grapevine readers - My name is Natasha Page a Wollaton based B.A.C.P Accredited Counsellor/Psychotherapist.

Discovering JOMO – e Joy Of Missing Out

Do you get FOMO (the Fear Of Missing Out)? Or are you perfectly happy to kick back with a cuppa while the world busies itself around you? If you identify with the latter, then congratulations – you’ve discovered JOMO (the Joy Of Missing Out)! You might get invited for a night out with friends that you really don’t want to go to, but accept anyway. Why? Because you’re worried about what you’ll miss, and you don’t want to feel le out when your friends all talk about it the next day. But who are you really serving here? If you’re not being true to yourself, your wellbeing is always going to su er. Really, FOMO boils down to wanting to feel accepted and included, rather than le out. Embracing ourselves, and our home lives, can help us to move through that feeing. If we don’t rely on anyone else for validation, FOMO starts to lose its power. Replacing FOMO with JOMO

If you’re not quite there yet, here are some tips for resisting FOMO:

• Don’t believe everything you see online: People’s lives always look so perfect online, don’t they? And because everyone posts about all of the great things they’re doing –from holidays to meals to days out – it can make you feel like you should be doing more with your time. But online isn’t real life: people post their highlights; you see your whole. Try to spend less time on social media, and more time on yourself.

• Use your time wisely: What nourishes and ful ls you? Who do you feel happiest around? Try to focus on the activities and people that bring you the most joy – that’s where your energy ought to be going. Once you start doing this, you’ll be far less worried about what everyone else is up to.

The My Little Therapy Box resource was created by me after I observed some clients struggling to open up in the early stages of therapy. Some clients also struggle to articulate their feelings into words. So, I created My Little Therapy Box to help people in or out of therapy to explore their mental health in an accessible way and to start or have more meaningful conversations around mental health. This unique resource has helped 1000’s of people from all around the world. To find out more please visit: www.mylittletherapybox.com

• Understand your triggers: We’re all triggered by di erent things, and it’s important to know what your triggers are. If you struggle with seeing posts from a certain person online, unfollow them; if you get to Christmas and feel like you should be snapping up every event you ever see advertised, decide well in advance what you most want to do, and refuse to look into the rest. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m o to do nothing for a little while...

Each month I bring a mental health related topic to discuss and give helpful hints and tips of how we can all achieve better mental health. Please feel free to connect with me on my social media channels, my Instagram handle is natashapagemsc Facebook @ My Little erapy Box and Linked In in Natasha Page.

New licensing scheme for private landlords - Nottingham City Council.

A new licensing scheme will come into force in the winter to improve private rented property in Nottingham. e City Council scheme, known as Selective Licensing, starts on December 1st 2023 and covers an estimated 30,000 privately rented homes across most areas of the city. It aims to give private tenants better quality accommodation and management as well as protection from bad landlords. Tenants will also know what is expected of their landlord in terms of the maintenance, safety and management of their home. It will be introduced into areas of the city where the council has gathered evidence of poorer property conditions. Rented properties are more likely to have dangerous hazards which could include electrical, gas, re safety, damp and mould issues. Selective Licensing will help ensure these issues are addressed, as landlords of private rented properties in certain parts of the city must now meet a set of conditions and ensure good management of their properties. Councillor Jay Hayes, the City Council’s Portfolio Holder for Housing, said: “People in Nottingham have a right to expect a decent and safe standard of private rented accommodation, which is well managed and maintained."Having a licence will allow landlords to demonstrate that they provide decent quality accommodation for tenants, and we will work with landlords to support them to achieve the licence conditions. We believe the scheme will improve the reputation of private landlords, as well as Nottingham’s reputation for providing quality housing" e scheme is a major step forward in improving living standards for many Nottinghamcresidents.”Councillor Hayes added: “ e cost of licensing will be reduced for landlords who havecNottingham Rental Standard Accreditation via DASH or Unipol."Anyone who receives rent on a private property in Nottingham should check if they need a licence – it is a legal requirement to apply once the scheme is in force if you are in the designated area.It is recommended that landlord/agents apply for a licence a er 1 September 2023 as the council is reviewing its licence application form following feedback and is making it quicker and simpler to complete. Landlords who have properties licensed in the rst scheme will not need a new license until their current licence expires. Landlords who have not previouslylicensed their properties or have new properties within the designation (scheme area) will need to apply. Income from the licence fees goes towards the cost of setting up, operating and delivering the scheme. e City Council is not permitted to make a pro t from the scheme. Further information will be available on the council’s website. e fee is likely to be similar to the current fee for individual licenses and some change to clock fees. Details will be available on our website soon. If landlords do not apply for a licence, they risk nes of up to £30,000 or prosecution through the courts. Failure to comply also means that tenants can apply to a tribunal to claim their rent back for up to 12 months. e current Selective Licensing Designation which started on August 1 2018 will end on July 31 2023, but the scheme will continue to inspect properties whose licence runs beyond July 31 2023. If landlords have a property which is currently licensed they should check whether it will be covered by the new scheme and if it is they will not need to apply for another licence until your current one expires. PLEASE NOTE: Anyone with a current Selective Licence will not need to reapply until their current licence expires.Landlords can nd out if their property is covered by Selective Licensing (current and new scheme) at: www.geoserver.nottinghamcity.gov.uk/myproperty/.

Ideas to keep the kids entertained this Summer

Firstly, check out any play days in your area, these are usually free with plenty to do.

1. Collect and paint pet or themed rocks (or make a village with houses etc)

2. Go birdwatching, take a camera and then look for information back at home.

3. Go on a picnic.

4. Buy a skipping rope or hula hoop and set a time record competition .

5. Make rose water from the fallen summer petals. Give them a pestle and mortar to mix up and grind their leaves and petals in. Give them a jug of water a little jars so that they can make petal perfume or potions with them.

6. Play pirates and hide a treasure chest in the garden, use brown paper and draw a map. An alternative treasure hunt is with directional clues – a great one is placing the kid’s teddies, or their toys, in spots for them to nd and make the clues about them. You can also do it by nding di erent colour items or objects beginning with certain letters. Or, one of the simplest ways to create a treasure hunt for toddlers is to print and laminate a load of images of something that they love, such as dinosaurs or wizards. Hide them around the garden and tell them how many there are to nd! You can tailor them for your kid’s interests, ages and abilities, make them as short or long, easy or complicated!

7. Make friends with a bug: Ladybirds, spiders, caterpillars, woodlice – there are all kinds of creepy crawlies hiding in all out door places . Just remember to be gentle if you pick them up, and then place them back . Start a nature diary -draw pictures and learn about what you have seen.

8. Do a wild challenge with the RSPB- great fun whilst learning - visit: https://www.rspb.org.uk/fun-and-learning/for-families/family-wild-challenge/

9. Build a den in the garden. Make a wigwam type with bamboo canes then use old sheets- duvet covers. Make a tent with chairs. Make a tent under a table indoors if raining. Have lunch or tea in the den.

10. Set up your own mini festival – better if you have a larger garden but even if not you can set up di erent stations around your garden; like a story area, an art area, a hair braiding area, a face painting area, a splash zone, a relaxing zone and a refreshments area!

11. Try and go to as many parks in your area, get the kids to mark each park out of 10.

12. Visit a National trust property – e National trust has hundreds of places all over the UK and the majority of them are a full and packed day out of fun with lots having family activities going on in the holidays. Most of them have brilliant adventure playgrounds which are worth the visit in themselves.

48 PLEASE MENTION GRAPEVINE WHEN RESPONDING TO ADVERTISEMENTS .

13.Get the bikes out and go for a ride. If you don’t have bikes, many local forests or bike trails have bike hire facilities. Cycling is great exercise and you get to see the place where you are cycling much better than you can from the window of a car.

14. Be a tourist in your own town. Visit your local monuments and museums. If you live near a big tourist town take a bus and see your hometown from a new perspective.

15. Make your own jigsaws by cutting out pictures from magazines, sticking them onto card and cutting them up.

16. Try and visit a wood near you Woods and forests are magical for children, lots of interesting things to see and nd. Tree shade is most welcome on a hot day, and a great way to keep cool. Check out woods near you on the internet.

17. Carry a pack of snap cards for younger kids, keeps them engaged.
