Editors Note

Hello everyone,

Spring is here, even with unpredictable weather we can all enjoy the lighter evenings. This month: Gardener Steve is back , so are the coach trips with Blue Skies the Limit !

Competitions to win tickets for Hugh Cornwell (from the Stranglers) , and for country music fans -from the UK - Cody Pennington, (see him on You Tube).

Money saving recipe- if anyone has a good recipe they would like to share please let me know.

I am busy at the moment releasing another Grapevine for the Erewash Area, which is for Sandiacre, Long Eaton and Ilkeston . This has been on hold since before Covid, but as I live in Sandiacre, I have been asked a few times to produce one. I hope the support is as great as this one has been over the years. A numerous amount of local trades people and businesses have been able to be keep going during and after Covid, because of the support from the Grapevine and our readers.

Remember not every one is on the internet or use social media, so I feel this magazine has been valuable for local people in general.

If you would like to promote your business or events in this new magazine , please get in touch with me for further information. If you want to inform people in your own area of any events coming up in the future , please let me know .

Until next time

Christine.

Hello Gardeners…

It’s Gardener Steve here! and I’m bringing you gardening tips, news and events.

Welcome to April's gardening, I have been contacted by a few of you with gardening questions which is great so please do get in touch with your questions, to share a gardening event or send me a seasonal garden photo, I would love to hear from you. Spring is now in full swing with everything bursting into life, riots of colour everywhere but also it is a busy time in the garden, it's the time to give the lawns their first mow if not already done so, those weeds will be starting to make more of an appearance! and a good tip if weeds start to grow you know it's a good time to start planting as it means the soil is warming up! Remember whilst you're out in your garden take a moment sit in the sunshine, listen to the birds, grab your favourite cuppa and admire the colour and interest you have in your garden. Enjoy.

Some jobs to be doing in April

Plant summer-flowering bulbs such as Lilies, Gladiolus and Crocosmia into borders or containers.

Any forced flower bulbs such as hyacinths and daffodils, which have now finished flowering, can be planted outdoors in garden borders.

Check any tree ties to make sure the tie is not cutting into the trunk. Loosen any that are tight to allow the trunk room to expand.

Continue cutting back any dead foliage left on your perennials and ornamental grasses to make way for new growth.

Continue planting potatoes and finish planting onion sets by mid-April

Repair any damage to lawns and grassed areas. Worn patches in the lawn can be repaired by sowing grass seed

14 PLEASE MENTION GRAPEVINE WHEN RESPONDING TO ADVERTISEMENTS .

Sow hardy annuals and herb seeds

Divide Hostas before they come into leaf.

Apply a high nitrogen lawn fertiliser, mow the grass regular but keep the blades fairly high

Mulch your beds and borders with layer of well rotted manure or garden compost to prepare for the growing season. You can also work in a general purpose fertiliser such as pelleted chicken manure.

Lift and divide perennial plants now to improve their health and create new plants for your garden.

Gardener Steve's Plant Of The Month

Erysimum ‘Bowle’s Mauve’ (Perennial wallflower)

Erysimum is a genus of flowering plants in the botanical family Brassicaceae, that includes about 180 species, both popular garden plants and many wild forms. They can be annuals, biennials or woody-based perennials with narrow leaves and dense racemes flowers. Long-lasting and often sweetly scented, the Erysimum can brighten your garden, bridging the months from spring through to summer.

'Bowles's Mauve' is a bushy evergreen perennial, with narrow, dark grey-green leaves and erect racemes of rich mauve flowers 2cm in width. This wallflower blooms over a long season, sometimes all winter in warm coastal areas. Drought tolerant once established. Attractive to butterflies. Evergreen. This must be one of the best perennials available not only for its long flowering season but also for its attractive foliage and flowers.

Flowering period: Spring onwards

Height and Spread: 45cm x 50cm

Position: Full sun

Soil: Well drained, fertile

Hardiness: Hardy perennial

Propagation: Take semi-ripe cuttings May to July

Pruning: Remove damaged foliage and deadhead after flowering

Pest and Diseases: Prone to slugs, snails and flea beetles and downy mildew and club root

Remember please keep getting in touch with your stories, photos, events, general gardening advice and help with plant identification just email me at: gardenersteve24@live.co.uk, Look forward to hearing from you.

Bedroom Health And Hygiene.

Do you want to sleep better? Let’s have a look at bedroom health and hygiene. When you vacumm and dust your bedroom regularly, you ensure that the air is clear of allergens and dust particles, it also prevents bacteria and viruses from harbouring in you home. With a clean room and fresh air, your sleep will be better and healthier. Most people are advised to wash bedding every week, but these should be washed at a minimum setting of 60`C. A recent study found that just after one week, pillowcases can have around 17 thousand times more bacteria than a toilet seat! A mattress protector is advised to reduce the chance of sweat and skin particlesgetting into your mattress. Be sure to vacuum you mattress at least once a month, paying extra attention to buttons and piping. Wash or dry clean duvets at least twice a year in the Spring and late Summer.(Most duvets can be washed in a washing machinecheck your machine). An important tip: Leave your bed unmade to let it cool and air out on a daily basis. Warmth and moisture from your body encourage dust mite growth, bad news especially for Asthma sufferers .Get into the habit of when you`re getting ready in the morning , pull the duvet off the bed and let the bedding breathe to avoid a build up of moisture allowing those mites to thrive and then place them back later in the day. If you cannot bear to leave the bed “unmade” place them back before you leave the house. At the weekends, or on bed changing day, leave all bedding off for a few hours. Do you ever get out of the shower and then leave your wet towel on the bed, forget about it, and realise it has been there all day? Moist environments encourage mould. If you are leaving damp towels and, therefore, damp bedding, mould can grow and release spores. If you have asthma, you are likely more sensitive to these spores which can trigger your symptoms or make them worse. Instead, hang your towel outside to dry or pop it in the tumble dryer. If you have to dry them inside, make sure the room is well ventilated to avoid encouraging mould growth. Have a comfortable mattress and pillow - your sleeping surface is critical to comfort and a pain free sleep, so choose the best mattress and pillow foryour needs wisely. Visit an reputable bed shop who can give the best advice on choosing the right mattress for you .Remember mattresses don’t last forever and as we sleep on them every night , it’s important to update your old one. There is nothing nicer than a comfortable bed, pillows and excellent bedding. The sheets are important too, choose the right ones for your needs. People spend 100”s of pounds on phones, ipads etc, but never think about spending money on a good mattress! and suitable bedding this should be top priorty for your health and well being.

Try not to use ipads, iphones or even watch a tv in bed if you suffer from poor sleeping patterns. A clutter free bedroom is helpful for a calmer state of mind and cultivates a positive space for sleep. Dim the lights. Artificial lighting and light pollution have some pretty negative effects on your sleep patterns. Choose relaxing colours in a bedroom.Pale greens, -Quiet and restful, green is a soothing colour that can invite harmony and diffuse anxiety. Blue -Blues are especially known to have a relaxing effect perfect for creating a serene feeling at home,–A highly peaceful colour, blue can be especially helpful for stress management because it can encourage a powerful sense of calm.

Yellows- pale yellow is a happy colour and in a north facing bedroom, brings happiness even on a dull grey day. Talking of grey, grey can be depressing if used in a bedroom, it can seem like waking up to a grey morning every day, use it sparingly and team it with other colours or with white. Everyone has their own idea for colour in a bedroom, but reds and oranges are not advisable if you are looking for calm and serene place to relax and sleep. If you are feeling unfreshed when you wake up each day, and feel tired throughout the day, and you are not suffering from any specific health problems, it may be that your sleeping patterns are interrupted. Spend some time adressing this problem and you will benefit in the long term. Look at your bed hygiene, your mattress and pillows, the bedroom itself, the colour and decor, take advantantage of this time of the year, Spring, to improve your overall health .

Sardine Fishcakes

A low cost meal. These simple sardine fishcakes cost not much to make, and are a great way to use up those tins from the store cupboard. Serve with a crisp green salad and fresh lemon wedges for the budget friendly easy dinner.

Ingredients

450g Maris Piper potatoes, peeled and chopped

**2 x 120g tins sardines in oil, drained (boneless)

4 spring onions, finely chopped

1 large free-range egg, beaten

1 tbsp dijon mustard

Handful fresh dill, chopped

Finely grated zest 1 lemon, plus wedges to serve

Pinch cayenne pepper

50g plain flour, plus extra to dust

2 tbsp vegetable oil

2 x 60g bags baby leaf salad to serve

Salt and black pepper

**You can use any types of tinned fish with this recipe.

Method

Put the potatoes in a pan of salted cold water. Bring to the boil, then turn the heat down and simmer for 6-8 mins or until tender. Drain well, leave to steam dry in the pan, then mash coarsely using a potato masher or a fork. Put the sardines in a bowl, mash lightly with a fork, then add the chopped spring onions, egg, dijon mustard, dill, lemon zest, cayenne pepper and 50g plain flour. Mix until combined, add the mashed potato, season generously with salt and black pepper, then mix again.

With lightly floured hands, shape the mixture into 8 even patties. Place on a plate then loosely cover and chill for 10 minutes. Heat 1 tbsp of the vegetable oil in a large non-stick frying pan then fry half the fishcakes for 3-4 minutes on each side until golden and piping hot. Put on a plate and keep warm. Repeat with the remaining oil and fishcakes. Serve with salad and lemon wedges.

The Nottingham City Council are pleased to be encouraging children to eat more vegetables with the Eat Them to Defeat Them campaign from Veg Power.

In catered schools that are participating, they’ll be serving four delicious international meals or tasters starting from 27th February. Veg Power are a not-for-profit national alliance with a mission to inspire children to enjoy eating vegetables. According to their research, 80% of children are not eating enough vegetables, with a third eating less than one portion a day. This important national campaign aims to increase the amount of veg children are eating with their school campaign which took place in 3,845 schools last year and reached one million schoolchildren. Veg Power’s survey showed that 57% parents of children who took part in school said their children ate more veg. - by Cllr. David Mellan.

THE CORONATION OF KING CHARLES 111

Saturday 6th & Sunday 7th May 2023

Nottingham Castle.

In May, the Commonwealth will celebrate the Coronation of His Majesty The King and Her Majesty The Queen Consort.

Re-opening for the first time since November, the grounds of Nottingham Castle will host a big screen on Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th May to broadcast the Coronation and Coronation Concert. This is thanks to funding made available by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, giving thousands of people the opportunity to come together at public screenings to celebrate this historic moment, in towns and cities across the four nations of the UK.

On Saturday, the Coronation will be screened live from Westminster Abbey in London. Their Majesties will be crowned in the same location as Her Late Majesty The Queen 70 years ago. People will be able to bring picnics and blankets to enjoy the ceremony in the historic surroundings of the Castle grounds. On Sunday evening, the Coronation Concert will be shown live from Windsor Castle, featuring music icons, a world-class orchestra and spoken word sequences delivered by stars of stage and screen.

The broadcast timings of the Coronation and Concert are yet to be confirmed. Due to limited capacity in the Castle grounds, people will need to pre-book entry to the screenings in advance. Further information will be announced in due course.

Donington Park Coffee Run

I was lucky to attend the Donington Park Coffee Run on 27th November 2022 at 9:00am- 12:00pm. I was driven there by my Uncle in his Porsche 911 Carrera T (touring), in Racing Yellow, alongside my cousins. We were being followed by my Auntie, Mum and Dad. We had to queue for approximately 30 minutes to get into the car park but I used the time wisely and spotted the differences between cars from a Caterham Seven to a Lamborghini Aventador SVJ.

Once we entered the site, the marshals were very clear with their directions. We snaked around and drove round the Melbourne Loop, which used to be part of the racetrack, on the way to one of the parking paddocks.

After you had parked up, you could wander round the hundreds of cars! For me this was ultimate heaven! I love spotting registration plates out on the road, so very much enjoyed seeing many personalised plates at the event.

I saw many cars there, including lots of Porsches, various Lamborghinis, a Ferrari 296 GTB and possibly the real Knight Rider. The 296 really pushed it for me. There were toilet facilities, outside food stalls and a shop onsite.

The atmosphere was spectacular!! You had to book tickets but admission was free. I loved the experience! The cracks, pops and bangs in the distance sent shivers down my spine. It was deafening!!

I would definitely recommend attending one of these events!

Bus Fare reductions in Nottingham.

Until 30 June 2023, a single fare on all buses in Nottingham will cost just £2. Bus operators in Nottingham are temporarily introducing a £2 single fare on all services, thanks to the Government’s Help for Households campaign. All bus operators in Nottingham are taking part in the scheme including:

Nottingham City Transport - Trentbarton - Linkbus and Medilink - CT4N- KinchbusMarshall’s - Stagecoach

Nottingham’s trams are not included in the £2 fare cap, but the City Council are lobbying the Government to include the award-winning tram system in this scheme. The scheme hopes to help families save money during cost of living pressures and encourage people to swap their cars for bus journeys. During the campaign, it’s hoped that millions of cars will be taken off the road. This will reduce carbon emissions whilst encouraging greater bus use to help the bus industry in its continued efforts to recover from the pandemic. Who is covering the costs of the discounted bus fares?

The Government’s Help for Households campaign is investing £75m to enable local bus operators outside of London to cap their single bus fares at £2. Where a discounted fare is provided to the passenger, the Government will cover the difference. Meaning if a single fare usually costs £2.50, the Government will provide the bus operator with the 50p difference. Which routes are included?

All local bus routes operating in Nottingham are included in the scheme. This includes services that cross over into neighbouring Nottinghamshire and Derby areas. Services excluded from the scheme include trentbarton’s red arrow service and dedicated school services.

Do I have to use cash to benefit from the discounted single fare?

No, you don’t have to use cash. Whilst cash will be accepted for the £2 single fare, the discounted ticket will also be available on Contactless, Robin Hood Pay-As-You-Go cards, and on operator mobile apps (such as the NCTX Buses app or the Mango app).

If you are using cash, just ask the driver for the £2 adult single. And remember, the exact fare will be needed.

How do I get the £2 single fare using Contactless?

If you usually use your credit or debit card to travel on Nottingham’s buses, you don’t need to do anything. Just tap your card or device onto the reader and the system will automatically offer you the correct fare.

How do I get the £2 single fare using Robin Hood Pay-As-You-Go?

If you usually use Robin Hood Pay-As-You-Go travel on Nottingham’s buses, you don’t need to do anything. Tap your card onto the reader when you board the bus and the system will automatically offer you the correct fare. You can get two single trips for £2 each. Once you travel for a third time, you will be charged the Robin Hood day cap (this ranges from £4.70 to £5.70 depending on the operator(s) you use).

“Bus travel remains the most popular form of public transport in England, making up around half of all journeys. That’s why we’re investing £60 million to cap single bus fares at £2 to support every passenger and help get people back on the bus. With the scheme set to take two million car journeys off the road, it’s fantastic to see so many bus operators signing up to the fare cap, helping people to ‘Get Around for £2.’”

Hi everyone,

I hope you’re all fine, here are just a few updates as to what is going on around our area.

First I would to mention the roads I have put forward for consideration for re-surfacing, Church St, Pasture Rd, Derby Rd from Broadoak to the traffic lights, Bessell Lane, Cyril Ave, Ryecroft St around the Central Ave area, Church Close, Derbyshire Ave and Stapleford Rd in Trowell. Footpaths around Brisbane, Aron, Braddon, Sherwin and Hillfield. The footpath between Sandiacre Rd and the Erewash canal has been re-laid and looks fantastic. Others between Mill and Moorbridge, Cemetry to Baulk Lane are hopefully to be included in the "mini holland scheme" which will be another boost for Stapleford.

The Town's deal is moving forward with a cycle scheme on lIkeston road started, the library is starting with its adult education facilities. The new car park is under planning, as well as Hickings lane. The town will be somewhere where we are all proud to live in.

Not everyone will be happy on the 5 projects that were picked and how the money will be spent, but there have been barriers and time limits on our projects.

I can assure you that the team of officers at Broxtowe and the board have all the residentsintersets at heart.

The roads and cycle routes around the town I have asked to incorporate a pelican crossing outside Albany. There is a petition going round, the more voices we have the better. This again takes time and a lot of planning to get this right. The bus review will be out soon. I am assured it will improve the connectivity around our town. Last two things, any street parties in our area planned for the King's Coronation there is some funding available, contact Broxtowe Borough Council, and well done Stapleford Yarnbomb Ladies for brightening up our town all year round with your fantastic skills.

Yours,

More Stapleford people can reach their peak fitness goals thanks to Towns Fund grant.

A fitness centre in Stapleford is now able to offer cutting-edge body monitoring services and cardio equipment to its customers thanks to a £24k Towns Fund grant.

Peak My Body Fitness Suite, which opened on Derby Road in July 2022, offers more than a traditional gym through personal and semi-private fitness training, sports performance and endurance training and coaching. Services also include ‘VO2 Max’ physiology and metabolic testing, which measure a clients' lung capacity and metabolism to accurately tailor training plans and nutrition to get the maximum benefits for their individual needs. VO2 Max testing can also support people in their recovery from Covid 19.

The grant, made available through the Stapleford Towns Fund’s Town Centre Recovery Fund scheme, has funded new cardio and leg training equipment, more dumbbells, a top-of-the-range resisted cable machine, a body composition scanner for people to see where they are losing body fat or gaining muscle, a new system to allow people to access the suite privately at times that suit them, and general redecoration of the suite, all of which has enabled the business to expand.

Peak My Body is owned and run by personal trainer and strength and conditioning coach, Mike Millers, 30, from Stapleford. Mike saw a gap in town’s gym offer to provide uniquely tailored training and fitness plans to help local people achieve their goals – from mums looking to get fit to sports people and athletes. Trained in sports strength and conditioning, and research in sports performance, Mike offers a wealth of experience from personal training privately and at the University of Nottingham, and from his time spent in Texas, USA, working at Olympic athlete Michael Johnson’s facility, coaching NFL American footballers NBA basketballers, collegiate athletes and children.

Mike Millers

Mike said: “I’m so grateful for this grant as it has made a massive difference to my business. With the addition of this new equipment and the new private access, which I wouldn’t have been able to fund for a many years, I’ve been able take my fitness offer to the next level, which will lead to more clients and the recruitment of more personal trainers to my team.”

As a born and bred Stapleford man, Mike is proud to open his first fitness centre in the town. He said: “I’ve lived in Stapleford all my life and it’s great to finally see some investment in the town. I’m particularly looking forward to £6.4m Community Centre planned for the Hickings Lane Rec which will be huge for people of all ages and great for the town as sports can be big business for everyone. “The sports facilities it will offer will be top quality and I’d love to be able to support local clubs with speed and agility training, and offer sports, speed and agility camps for kids over the holidays. So much to look forward to – the town definitely has a bright future.”

Ian Jowett, Chair of the Stapleford Towns Fund Board, said: “It’s fantastic that Mike chose to open his first fitness centre in his home town, offering local people a new way to keep fit. The Town Centre Recovery Fund aims to give local businesses the boost they need to build a strong future and we wish Mike the very best for the future.”This is one of more than 70 grants to be awarded through the £1m Town Centre Recovery Fund (which closed on 31 January 2023) - one of six projects funded through the £21.1m Stapleford Towns Fund, part of the Government’s £3.6bn Towns Deal.

Who are you going to call? Gum Busters!

Move over Ghost Busters, the Gum Busters arrived in Broxtowe to help tackle chewing gum litter, as part of a Government funded Chewing Gum Task Force. The Gum Busters took part Borough’s town centres for the first time to mark Keep Britain Tidy’s annual Great British Spring Clean which ran from 17th March to 2nd April.

The Gum Busters used new gum cleaning equipment which removes stains using an eco-friendly detergent made from sugar beet. This is heated and squirted directly onto the gum to quickly vaporise it. Unlike jet washers, these machines cause little disruption so there is no need to cordon off pavements while they are in use. Now when you see gum stains in the neighbourhood, you know who we’re going to call on to remove them.

New pink gum bins and signage encouraging residents to be responsible and dispose of their chewing gum rather than littering have also been installed in the Borough’s four town centres. The bins themselves are made from waste gum, ensuring the gum is recycled efficiently and responsibly. The new signage has previously contributed to reductions in gum littering up to 62% according to Keep Britain Tidy’s previous evaluations.

It’s not just chewing gum litter that the Council is keen to tackle though. Litter picks will be taking place across the Borough during the next coming weeks and the Council would love to hear from anyone who would like to help us to keep the local area clean and tidy by joining our wider Community Clean Teams..

Volunteering: If you’d like to organise your own event, we can help by loaning equipment. We will also arrange the collection of the waste when the event is finished. Our resource pack which provides everything you need to organise your event is also available. You can find out more at www.broxtowe.gov.uk/cleanandgreen.

No More Heroes, Black and White, The Raven and The Gospel According To The Men In Black - which Hugh cites as his favourite Stranglers album – consolidated Cornwell’s stature as a unique songwriter and musician.

His lyrics to Golden Brown, from the La Folie album, and their multiple meanings, is a song writing masterclass with the song reaching number 2 in the UK singles charts. After releasing his final album 10 with the band Hugh embarked on a solo career.

GRAPEVINE COMPETITION

WIN 2 TICKETS TO SEE CODY PENNINGTON at the O2 in Birmingham

Friday 19th May 2023

A born and raised Nashvillian, Cody Pennington is starting to make waves in the UK country music scene. A highly varied and interesting life inspires Cody’s songwriting.

From leaving Nashville for the United States Air Force in 2011 to selling out many UK music venues (including the historic 100 Club in London and the 760-capacity Central Hall in Southampton) Cody’s working life is already varied enough to write a full biography. Cody grew up in Nashville, TN where he cut his teeth in the local music scene. He studied Recording Business Management before deciding to join the Air Force.

His time in the Air Force took Cody around the world. He was stationed in unique locations like Turkey and the UK. While working as a medical technician, Cody still took advantage of his off-time by performing in as many venues as possible. Nearing the end of his enlistment, Cody decided it was time to pursue his music full-time – although this would prove to be difficult. For months, he was forced to sleep in his car while simultaneously booking tours in the southern US. This period did not last very long as Cody was then offered a position performing aboard Carnival Cruise Line. This led him to perform hundreds of shows in many exotic locations, such as Australia, Bora Bora, Tahiti, and many other Southern Pacific islands.

After meeting his wife in Australia, Cody decided to move back to the UK to return to school for a short period. After receiving a Bachelor’s in Law and a Master’s in Law and Business Management, Cody was offered a position as a trainee lawyer at a corporate law firm. However, the pull to music was too strong. After a year in his law firm, Cody decided it was time to get back to music full-time.

56 PLEASE MENTION GRAPEVINE WHEN RESPONDING TO ADVERTISEMENTS .

Cody’s 2022 tour sold over 5,000 tickets and his debut country EP, “Downtown”, is scheduled to be released in Summer 2023. Two singles from the EP, the title track “Downtown” and “How Bout Kentucky”, were released on 20 January 2023 and went straight to No 1 in the iTunes Country Chart.

"Cody will be on tour again in the UK in May and July 2023. This tour’s venues have nearly doubled in capacity, but tickets are still going fast. 2023 will likely be a successful year for the singer-songwriter."

CODY PENNINGTON – Spring / Summer 2023 shows include:

Friday 19th May BIRMINGHAM – O2 Academy

Craft items donated to The Getaway Club in Stapleford.

Christina Rayment from Toton donated over 30 boxes of knitting items and wool to the Getaway Club in Stapleford. As she could not present the items to the club herself, the Grapevine Editor (photo: standing left ), collected them, and the Mayor Of Broxtowe Cllr David Grindell (middle) presented them to the Getaway Club co-ordinator Karen Moore (standing on the right) .

The Getaway club is for adults with special needs and learning difficulties and they meet each Wednesday evening . The Mayor David Grindell helps out regularly at the club with Karen and others volunteers.

Crafts, drawing, sewing and games are available, with plenty of tea and coffee. They were overjoyed with the gifts and some were happy to have their photograph taken by Rachel a member of the club, for the Grapevine magazine. Rachel is currently at college part time studying photography. Snacks, tea and coffee, the hire of a mini bus and the room is all funded from the members own weekly subscriptions., so any gifts of paper, card, craft items, and any photo frames (for their artwork ) from any of the Grapevine readers would be most welcome. A huge thank you to Christina Rayment for her generous gift, they were overjoyed!

Be alert to cold callers offering home repair work.

Our Trading Standards team is warning residents to be wary of anyone coming to the door offering fake surveys to check for signs of toxic mould. In some cases, unscrupulous scammers have used high-pressure sales tactics to trick householders into paying ‘admin fees’ of £50-£250, which they say are necessary to secure a government energy-efficiency grant. The scammers then fail to return to carry out work, and victims are unable to contact them to get their money back.

To protect yourself against rogue traders we strongly advise against buying goods or services from doorstep callers. Deter unwanted doorstep traders by displaying a ‘no uninvited callers’ sign on your door or in your front window. See cut out on next page

Residents are also warned not respond to text messages or phone calls offering home repair work. In most cases these are sent by scammers seeking to steal money or personal details. If you think that you, or someone you know, has been the victim of a fraudster offering home repairs, please report it to Action Fraud. Or call Citizens’s Advice Consumer Service tel: 03454 04 0506

Make sure your next holiday isn’t a fake-ation

Planning your next getaway? Make sure you do your research before you book a holiday, as unscrupulous criminals are using a variety of tricks to con people into booking caravans, villa rentals, holiday lets or holiday packages that don’t actually exist.

Here are our tips to protect yourself against holiday scams:

Don’t reply to unsolicited emails, texts, social media or calls with holiday offers. Links and attachments in emails may lead to malicious websites or download viruses. Where possible, use a credit card when making purchases over £100 and up to £30,000 as you receive free protection under Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act Book your holiday directly with an airline or hotel or through a reputable travel agent that is ABTA or ATOL registered. Remember, if the holiday offer seems to be too good to be true, then it probably is. Nottingham County Council.
