WOLLATON CARE GROUP - CAN YOU HELP? Our ‘group’ consists of a fairly small number of people who live in the Wollaton area who arrange activities aimed at helping elderly people to enjoy a more active social life within the community. We have two Luncheon Clubs, held on each Wednesday and Thursday throughout the year, providing meals at a moderate cost. We arrange outings and visits and, by discussion, we may be able to arrange a limited number of home visits. We have recently lost a number of our clients due to illness and other circumstances and are therefore keen to recruit new members For further information please phone John Tordoff on 0115 9988306

Nottingham on route for cleaner buses following successful bid Key routes into Nottingham will benefit from even cleaner buses, as just under half of the City’s main bus fleet is upgraded. More than 160 vehicles of Nottingham City Transport’s 330-strong fleet are set to be retro-fitted to clean up their tailpipe emissions, following a successful joint bid from the bus operator and Nottingham City Council. The £2.7m funding, from Defra’s and Department for Transport’s Clean Vehicle Technology Fund, will be used to convert 161 of NCT’s existing, young diesel buses to the latest Euro VI standards, resulting in tailpipe emissions that are 90 per cent cleaner than their current Euro V standard, and would be compliant with a future Clean Air Zone. The City Council, which already runs 58 electric vehicles on its Linkbus services, will use its share of the funding to convert its remaining five diesel buses to Euro VI standard. Councillor Sally Longford, the council’s Portfolio Holder for Neighbourhood Services and Local Transport, said: “This is fantastic news that will benefit many of our key routes into the city. It builds on the already impressive strides made in the city, by ourselves and our public transport operators, to improve our air quality.”

26

NCT Engineering Director, Gary Mason commented, “Our Euro V buses, which are only between 2 and 7 years old, will have enhanced exhaust treatment systems retrofitted to bring them to Euro VI equivalent, this will result in Nottingham City Transport having one of the youngest and cleanest fleets in the country. He continued, “Last year we introduced our fleet of 53 Euro VI biogas powered double deck buses – the largest double deck gas bus fleet in the world! The success of these buses combined with their ultra-low carbon footprint (using bio methane as a fuel) has encouraged NCT to adopt this fuel technology for future new bus orders and it is intended that all existing Euro III and Euro IV buses will be replaced in this way.” Retrofitting diesel vehicles involves fitting a new tank and making alterations to the exhaust. The process will reduce Nitrogen Dioxide emissions by around 63,411kg a year, and emission of Particulate Matter by 488kg over the same period. Key Routes that will benefit include Mansfield Road, Clifton, Carlton, Bestwood, St Anns, Basford Ilkeston Road, Alfreton Road and Derby Road. by Nottingham City Council Photo: NottinghamCity Council

Care and Support at Home – Lifestyle factors and Dementia Latest figures reveal that Dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease, has overtaken heart disease as the leading cause of death in England and Wales. A recent study has also shown the steady rise of people who are overweight or obese within the general UK population and the risks to our health. When asked if they were overweight, most people who participated in the study stated they were not. In the same way that what we eat not only contributes to our weight but has a direct impact on our health, a recent study published by Age UK reveals that lifestyle is responsible for up to 76% of changes in the ageing brain and in addition, that key lifestyle changes have the potential to reduce the risk of developing dementia by as much as 36%. Given the latest estimates showing that dementia affects one in three people over the age of 65, it is vital to understand the key lifestyle changes which might have a positive effect and reduce the risk of developing dementia and / or slowing its development. The key lifestyle changes the study refers to include; • Regular physical exercise • A Mediterranean diet • Not smoking • Drinking alcohol in moderation • Preventing and treating diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity

Alzheimer’s disease (the most common form of dementia). At Home Instead our CAREGivers are trained to encourage the people they support to exercise. This does not mean running a marathon but walking with them to the local shops, going for a swim or even, where mobility is reduced, chair based exercises. This will have a positive effect on health and reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer’s or slow down the progress of the disease. Our Alzheimer’s training, developed with the help of many specialists and researchers and based on the experience and know-how of over 1,200 offices, clearly states that lifestyle does matter and the information from Age UK supports this. It is important to note however that the precise cause or causes of Alzheimer’s disease or other dementias is not known. Nevertheless, most experts agree that Alzheimer’s disease or other dementias, like other chronic diseases, probably

develop as a result of multiple factors, rather than from a single cause. Looking after ourselves by exercising, eating a balanced diet and doing away with too much alcohol is not a guarantee to prevent the condition but it will certainly have a positive effect. Primo Sule – primo.sule@homeinstead.co.uk Tel: 0115 9222116

Physical exercise, such as aerobic, resistance or balance activity, was found to be the most effective way to ward off cognitive decline in healthy older people and to reduce the risk of developing

Bramcote Today a Successful Community Blog is given a makeover Last night, 5 March 2018, the three editors of Bramcote Today presented a brand-new site at the Bramcote Community Action Team Meeting. The editors have +updated and streamlined their website to improve access to the information about Bramcote and the surrounding area. Bramcote Today was launched exactly seven years ago at the Bramcote Community Action Team meeting in March 2011 in front of almost 100 residents at the Bramcote Memorial Hall. The community website was inspired by a talk given at the previous CAT meeting by William Perrin, “Talk about Local”, who used this platform to engage with his community and improve his neighbourhood. For the last seven years Bramcote Today has given residents a credible platform to stay informed and share opinions about many important issues such as the building of the tram infrastructure and development of precious green belt. The editors are also able to support local events by publicising these via their website, plus social media. Being a non-political platform, newsletters dedicated to local updates from different political parties are published and, inevitably, politically minded residents continue to enjoy healthy debate. The Bramcote editors are Steve Austin, Mike Johnson and Sue Sambells, who are all longterm residents of Bramcote, regular Bramcote CAT attendees and feel passionate about improving local community communications. Readers can also get involved via Bramcote Today’s Facebook and Twitter pages. In fact, their Facebook page has proved particularly popular with local good news stories such as when a lady whose elderly father had passed away and wanted to make contact with colleagues and friends from the days when he lived in the area. The Facebook post was widely shared and several friends paid lovely tributes to him which comforted his daughter at a time of great sadness. The editors thank their readers from the last seven years and hope to gain many more in the years to come. They have received close to 1.5 million hits. Comments to existing posts and submissions for new posts are welcomed, so long as they are constructive, not personally insulting and relevant to the residents of Bramcote. www.bramcotetoday.org.uk > Bramcote Today Past and Present.

Nottingham to change attitudes on mental health Nottingham has been named a Time To Change hub, set up to change how we all think and act about mental health locally. Time To Change hubs are networks of local organisations and individuals committed to ending negative attitudes and behaviours towards people experiencing mental health problems in their communities. Too many people with mental health problems are made to feel isolated, ashamed and worthless. But with the right support from those around them, people can recover and have equal opportunities in all areas of life. Encouraging people to open up to mental health – to talk and to listen – is the first step. Time To Change hubs have been created to combine the insights from the national campaign with local knowledge to support communities, workplaces and schools to take action to improve the way everyone thinks and acts about mental health problems in their area. Local Hubs- Over the next four years (2017 – 2021), we will be working with groups of local organisations and mental health champions to help change the way people think and act about mental health in their communities. It’s part of our broader strategy to embed and sustain Time to Change as a social movement in local communities. We’re doing this by creating a network of Time to Change hubs. They combine the insights from the national campaign with local knowledge to support communities,

workplaces and schools to help end the negative attitudes and behaviours towards people experiencing mental health problems where they live. Time to Change hubs are local partnerships which demonstrate their commitment to: Putting people with personal experience of mental health problems at the heart of their work Embedding anti-stigma and discrimination work locally, whether that be local schools, workplaces or other community settings Proactively campaigning to improve people’s attitudes and behaviours towards mental health. In 2017, we set up four funded hubs: Time to Change Suffolk, Time to Change Leeds, Time to Change Cumbria and Time to Change West Sussex. In 2018, they were joined by Time to Change Bristol, Time to Change Nottingham, Time to Change Waltham Forest and Time to Change Worcestershire. Along with funded hubs, which receive a set-up fund of £10,000, there are over 25 organic hubs across England which campaign in their local area. We are funded by:

Our search begins for the county’s community heroes! Our county is known the world over for Robin Hood, the legendary outlaw hero and his famous Sherwood Forest home. Now Nottinghamshire County Council today launches its search for modern-day community heroes and heroines – and wants to hear from you! Nottinghamshire Community Heroes is seeking nominations for people who go the extra mile for a neighbour, an organisation or a local community. Nottinghamshire County Council Chairman Councillor John Handley will meet the person who is named as a Nottinghamshire Community Hero and will present them with an award for their achievements. The awards will take place on a regular basis. Councillor Handley said: “In my role as Chairman, I meet many, many people who are unsung heroes in their local community or neighbourhood, undertaking selfless acts to benefit others. The aim of this award, in Robin Hood county, is to recognise some of these people to celebrate their contribution to helping make Nottinghamshire a great place to live. “Nominations can come from anyone who wants to highlight the achievements of another person, who lives in Nottinghamshire and works or volunteers within the county.” Some ideas for nominees are those who help vulnerable people with shopping, or providing a lift to a medical appointment, supporting young people in their

52

community, volunteering for a good cause, or leading a local community project which has made a difference to people’s lives.

Cllr. John Handley

On a regular basis, the Chairman of the County Council will select one person who they believe deserves an extra special thank you. They will receive the Chairman’s Award which includes meeting the Chairman of the County Council. The criteria is as follows: · Nominees must live in the county · Nominees must work or volunteer within the county · Nominations should not be party political · Nominees and those nominating would feature in award publicity The awards will be reviewed by the Chairman of the County Council and the Chairman’s award will be presented on a regular basis to an individual nominated for the award. To nominate someone, please visit: www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/ nottscommunityheroes #nottsheroes on Twitter.

SIMNEL CAKE RECIPE

A rich fruit cake which includes lumps of marzipan stirred into the mixture that melts and combines with all the other flavours during cooking. It is then finished off with more marzipan. Traditionally 12 marzipan balls are placed on the top, but as it’s now popular at Easter, sugared primroses make a good decoration or mini eggs. Ingredients 100g/4oz glacĂŠ cherries 225g/8oz butter, softened 225g/8oz light muscovado sugar 4 large eggs 225g/8oz self-raising flour 225g/8oz sultanas 100g/4oz currants 50g/2oz chopped candied peel 2 lemons, grated zest only 2 tsp ground mixed spice Method Preheat the oven to 150C/280F/Gas 2. Grease and line a 20cm/ 8in cake tin. Cut the cherries into quarters, put in a sieve and rinse under running water. Drain well then dry thoroughly on kitchen paper. Place the cherries in a bowl with the butter, sugar, eggs, self-raising flour, sultanas, currants, candied peel, lemon zest and mixed spice and beat well until thoroughly mixed. Pour half the mixture into the prepared tin. Take one-third of the marzipan and roll it out to a circle the size of the tin and then place on top of the cake mixture. Spoon the remaining cake mixture on top and level the surface. Bake in the pre-heated oven for about 2½ hours, or until well risen, evenly brown and firm to the touch. Cover with aluminium foil after one hour if the top is browning too quickly. Leave

56

For the filling and topping 450g/1lb marzipan 1-2 tbsp apricot jam, warmed

to cool in the tin for 10 minutes then turn out, peel off the parchment and finish cooling on a wire rack. When the cake is cool, brush the top with a little warmed apricot jam and roll out half the remaining marzipan to fit the top. Press firmly on the top and crimp the edges to decorate. Mark a criss-cross pattern on the marzipan with a sharp knife. Form the remaining marzipan into 11 balls. Brush the marzipan with beaten egg and arrange the *marzipan balls around the edge of the cake. Brush the tops of the balls with beaten egg and then carefully place the cake under a hot grill until the top is lightly toasted. *we have used mini eggs, which of course does not need grilling!

Potato, Leek and Onion Soup Serves 4-6 4 Large Leeks 1 Medium onion finely chopped 2 Medium Potatoes, peeled & diced 50mg Butter 850ml Vegetable stock 275 Milk Salt and freshly milled black pepper To Serve 2 tblsps cream or creme fresh 1 1/2 teaspoons of chopped fresh chives or parsley Or chopped fried pieces of bacon Delicious with crusty bread First, trim the leeks, discarding the tough outer layer. Now split them in half lengthways and slice them quite finely, then wash them thoroughly in two or three changes of water. Drain well. In a large, thick-based saucepan, gently melt the butter, then add the leeks, onions and potatoes, stirring them all round with a wooden spoon so they get a

nice coating of butter. Season with salt and pepper, then cover and let the vegetables sweat over a very low heat for about 15 minutes. After that, add the stock and milk, bring to simmering point, cover and let the soup simmer very gently for a further 20 minutes or until the vegetables are soft – if you have the heat too high the milk in it may cause it to boil over. Now put the whole lot into a blender – leave it to cool a little first – and blend to a smooth purée. If you have to blend the soup in batches, make sure you have a bowl to hand to put the first batch into. Now return the soup to the saucepan and reheat gently, tasting to check the seasoning. Add a swirl of cream or crème fraîche before serving and sprinkle with freshly snipped chives or parsley. *You could use croutons, or small chopped fried pieces of bacon on top .

Local teen Emma Snow writes about various topics and events each month in the Grapevine. “A voice for the young people in our Community”. Do you need an energy boost? It’s really difficult to find the motivation to crawl out from underneath a blanket when it’s really dark outside and the summer months feel like a distant memory. With Christmas and New Year celebrations done and dusted, the following months can drag whilst we wait for brighter mornings and warmer days, but it’s important that we help ourselves by making a couple of changes to feel just that little more energised. Let’s start with sleep: Not getting a minimum of 7 hour’s sleep can make you feel particularly lethargic and therefore lacking in motivation. Often busy schedules, work and deadlines can get in the way of getting that well-needed beauty sleep, but it’s really important if you want to be productive. If this is something you struggle with, try to incorporate a routine. I for one know that it’s not always easy, but try to have meals at the same time everyday whilst also making sure that you aren’t staying up doing work until the early hours of the morning. You’ll have a much better night’s sleep if you just relax for an hour or so before bed time so that your body has time to shut down and recover from the day. Busy schedules can be a nightmare but it’s how you deal with them. Sometimes a busy and hectic life

58

can make you feel demotivated because it can feel as though you have a mountain of work to tackle. I find that writing lists helps with this; writing down everything you want to (or sometimes have to) complete by the end of the week. Work out what you need to prioritise and ensure you get these tasks completed before the rest. Obviously try to make the list achievable and every time you complete a task, you’re likely to feel more motivated, satisfied and energised to tackle the next week once you have completed your weekly goals. Getting organised and planning ahead means that you’re more likely to manage your time and ensure that you don’t cram too much into your days. Although I always loved having a paper diary (call me old fashioned), I have recently found myself organising my time through my phone diary. This is because it’s much more time specific and I always have my phone with me wherever I go. I’m therefore less likely to double book whilst also ensuring that I meet all my deadlines. Planning ahead and managing your time means that you’re more likely to take time out for yourself, giving you that energy boost you need. Give yourself some ‘me’ time. This is so important to feel refreshed. Sometimes we get so tied up in work or meeting deadlines that we forget to take some time out for ourselves to do something we enjoy. Whether it’s going for a catch up over coffee with friends, going on a night out, spending time with family or

watching a film; it’s important to have a break to feel refreshed and inject enjoyment back into our lives. Fuelling yourself from within: a healthy diet. Put that chocolate bar down! Even though a sugary snack may give you a sugar rush and it’s easy to eat on the go, you’ll feel good for a while, but crash soon after. It’s important to eat well to feel healthy from within, which in turn results in increased energy levels. Drinking lots of water flushes out toxins, green tea is also excellent for this. Having porridge for breakfast or a healthy home-made smoothie is great for breakfast; porridge is a slow energy releaser and a smoothie will have lots of vitamins making you feel ready and focused for the day ahead. It takes two to tango: don’t forget to combine a healthy diet with exercise. After a busy day at school, college or work, you probably don’t feel like exercising and you also probably don’t want to sacrifice those needed hours of sleep in the morning. Finding time to exercise means that you’ll burn calories, it helps you sleep better and releases endorphins that make you feel energised the following day. Hopefully these tricks and tips will help you feel slightly more motivated. Summer is waiting just around the corner, we just have to get though the darker months first.

Trent Vale Infants School, Trent Road, Beeston, Nottingham NG9 1LP About the Author Originally from Manchester, Paul came to Sheffield to study a degree in Environmental Science in the late 1970s where he specialised in wildlife conservation. Paul trained as a teacher and worked as a lecturer of Environmental Science in Sheffield for 20 years before he became a full time wildlife photographer. Paul started photography about 30 years ago with a Pentax SLR using slide film. This seems a bit like the Stone Age today but it did teach him a lot about how to operate a camera well, there was no checking on the back screen then! He has always had a deep passion for wildlife since childhood, his favourite book, 'My Family and Other Animals' by Gerald Durrell echoed so much with how he viewed the natural world, though from an English perspective and not a Greek one.

About the talk Since 2000, naturalists have monitored the state of British wildlife and its habitats - there is good and bad news. Paul looks at many examples and suggests how we should manage our islands for the next century. This meeting includes our brief AGM. Beeston Wildlife Group - Indoor meetings programme 2017- 2018 rd

DID YOU KNOW? Every brain changes with age, and mental

function changes along with it. Mental decline is common, and it's one of the most feared consequences of aging. But cognitive impairment is not inevitable. Get mental stimulation Through research with mice and humans, scientists have found that brainy activities stimulate new connections between nerve cells and may even help the brain generate new cells, developing neurological "plasticity" and building up a functional reserve that provides a hedge against future cell loss.Any mentally stimulating activity should help to build up your brain. Read, take courses, try "mental gymnastics," such as word puzzles or maths problems Experiment with things that require manual dexterity as well as mental effort, such as drawing, painting, and other crafts. Research shows that using your muscles also helps your mind. A

RECYCLE YOUR OLD SPECTACLES! Thanks to the local community, in the last four years Notts Derbys Hemlockstone Lions have collected and dispatched 15 000 pairs of spectacles as part of the Lions Clubs International British Isles & Ireland Spectacle Recycling Initiative, launched originally by the Lions Club of Chichester in 1967, today it sees nearly a third of a million pairs of used glasses collected, sorted and distributed to clinics and eye camps in communities across the world in partnership with Medico France. The project also raises financial support for eye related projects at home and overseas by recycling scrap metal from spectacles that are broken or unsuitable for recycling, sponsoring eye camps in Nepal and India for example. Lions Clubs were formed 100 years ago to serve their local communities and support those in need locally, nationally and around the world - recycling spectacles is just one of the many initiatives supported by them. We’ll soon be saying goodbye to Jack Frost for another year but there has still been plenty of cold weather around over the past couple of weeks. Winter conditions can be bad for your health, particularly for those aged 65 and over or those who have a long-term condition. So keeping warm is really important to help prevent colds, flu or more serious health conditions such as heart attacks, strokes, pneumonia and depression. The home should be at least 18 degrees and windows should be kept closed at night.Carers have a really important role to play. Making sure you and your loved ones are looking after yourselves properly and taking medication as prescribed. Also ensuring people are eating well, taking exercise and seeing others for mental and physical health and wellbeing. If you need to speak to the NHS urgently call 111. They can advise you on the best course of action.

Help Our Hedgehogs

Hedgehog numbers are in decline. In rural areas, intensive agriculture has led to the fragmentation of habitats such as copses and hedges, resulting in fewer places to nest, hibernate and forage for food. Roads and motorways carve up habitats and create hazards. The use of pesticides, fungicides and herbicides may be behind the decline in their food, such as caterpillars, beetles and worms. In urban and suburban areas, fences and walls prevent hedgehogs from travelling between gardens – they roam up to a mile each night in search of food. Ponds, netting, strimmers and slug pellets also create hazards. Paving over front gardens reduces food and shelter and forces hedgehogs onto roads to get to the next patch of green space. The good news, however, is that there is plenty that gardeners can do to help Create access holes One of the best things you can do for hedgehogs is to allow them access to your garden. Simply cut a hole, 12cm x 12xm, in the bottom of your fence. If you have a large garden, consider making holes at several points. If you get together with

74

your neighbours, you can create ‘hedgehog highways’, allowing hedgehogs to roam greater distances. Plant a hedge A hedge is the perfect garden habitat, allowing easy access between gardens, and room for piles of leaves to accumulate beneath, where hedgehogs can forage, hibernate and raise their young. Native plants, such as hawthorn and hazel, will attract egg-laying moths, increasing your stock of caterpillars – a favoured food of hedgehogs. Make ponds safe A deep pond with steep sides is a hedgehog death trap. Hedgehogs can swim but quickly become exhausted, and find it impossible to climb out. Ensure your pond has sloping sides so hedgehogs can exit easily. Alternatively, drape thick rope netting over one side, or place a log at one end to act as a ladder. Check before strimming Hedgehog hospitals and rescue centres are full of hedgehogs with injuries caused by strimmers. To prevent injury or killing a sleeping hedgehog, check your long grass before using your strimmer. If you find any hedgehogs, move them from danger to a safe, secluded spot. Avoid using slug pellets Conventional slug pellets contain metaldehyde, which is lethal to hedgehogs. Wildlife-friendly, organic pellets contain the less toxic ferric phosphate, but they still take slugs and snails out of the food chain. Hedgehogs are slug predators, so taking steps to boosting hedgehog numbers will help control the slug population in your garden.

20/03/2018 19:47

Make a hedgehog house Hedgehogs need a dry, safe place to raise young and hibernate, and a box is the perfect habitat. Ideally, cover it with plastic sheeting and a layer of leaves and make an entrance tunnel (around 12cm x 12cm and 40cm long) to prevent predators getting in. Site it under a northfacing hedge, out of the way.

Leave out extra food While provision of natural food is the best option for hedgehogs, give them a helping hand with supplementary food, especially before and after hibernation. Offer meatbased dog or cat food, preferably chicken or turkey flavour. Avoid leaving out bread or milk as this can dehydrate and kill hedgehogs.

Grow native plants Native plants such as honeysuckle, dog rose, hawthorn and blackthorn are

caterpillar food plants for a wide range of moths, which lay eggs on the leaves. Most moth caterpillars descend to the ground to pupate before becoming an adult, where they become nourishing food for passing hedgehogs. Check bonfires If you build a bonfire that includes twigs, branches and other garden waste, it could be mistaken for a hibernaculum. Either dismantle it and rebuild it just before lighting, or light it on the same day you build it. This will ensure that no hedgehogs or other wildlife have had a chance to creep into it. If you are worried about a Hedgehog Advice from British Hedgehog Preservation Society. If you have found a hedgehog you are concerned about please use gardening gloves to collect it up, bring it indoors and put it in a high sided cardboard box with an old towel or fleece in the bottom for the hedgehog to hide under. Fill a hot water bottle so that when it is wrapped in a towel there is a nice gentle heat coming through and put that in the bottom of the box with the hedgehog, ensuring it has room to get off the bottle and making sure the bottle is kept warm (if allowed to go cold it will do more harm than good). Put the box somewhere quiet. Offer meaty cat or dog food and fresh water then call us as soon as possible on 01584 890 801 for further advice and the numbers of local contacts. Note that out of office hours there is an answerphone, if you have a hedgehog, please press option 1 and listen to the emergency numbers, these volunteers are not representatives of BHPS but they will give you advice and numbers of local contacts.
