Grapevine Tips - Caring for houseplants: Summer holidays In the case of short absences during the summer, giving plants a thorough watering before going away may be sufficient. Moving them to a cooler room or away from a bright window will help prevent them drying out.For longer absences special measures can be taken to prevent the plant suffering or dying. These are based on providing a reservoir of water for the plant to draw on: Wick method This method is useful for large single pot plants. Use a large container to hold water, and a piece of capillary matting as a wick. Insert one end of the wick into the reservoir and tuck the other end into the plant pot. This will enable the plant to draw on the water reserves in the reservoir. Capillary matting Use this method for collections of smaller pot plants. It may not work with pots that have broken crocks in the bottom.Place a sheet of capillary matting on the kitchen sink draining board or a suitable surface next to the bath. Drape one end of the matting into the sink or bath, which is filled with water. Plants should be grouped on the wet matting, ensuring they make good contact with it by pressing them down slightly. Clay pots need a thorough watering first for them to start drawing up water from the mat.

Beeston Library to re-open in August Beeston Library will re-open on the 5th August following extensive refurbishment. The library closed last year to enable a series of improvements to the building’s infrastructure, including: New roof, windows, ceiling, lights, flooring and heating system. New shelving and a re-design of public spaces for modern library use. Re-opening of the original main entrance on Foster Avenue. Discovery room – a space for hands on learning, creativity and innovation Improvements to the meeting areas and exhibition spaces. Great progress has been made with building works and internal layout complete, flooring and ceilings currently being installed. The installation of the door on the new entrance on Foster Avenue will be one of the key milestones of the project in the coming weeks. The refurbishment, part of Inspire’s commitment to creating innovative and modern spaces will see the venue become one of four flagship libraries in Nottinghamshire. Other flagship libraries which Inspire runs on behalf of Nottinghamshire County Council are West Bridgford, Mansfield and Worksop. From November, Beeston library will benefit from an extensive arts and cultural programme including

exhibitions, learning activities, workshops, performance, community and family events. The library will initially re-open with existing opening hours, and in September a consultation will take place with library users and Beeston residents to establish if different opening hours would be welcome. The library will also most importantly benefit from a significant injection of new book stock including adults, children’s, fiction and non-fiction. Full details will soon be released of the programme of activities to celebrate the re-opening including family theatre, art exhibitions, family art workshops, the annual Summer Reading Challenge for children and the return of regular events such as Rattle, Rhyme and Roll for the under 5s. The library will officially be opened on 9 September with a Family Fun Day.Inspire’s Chief Executive Officer, Peter Gaw, commented: “At Inspire, we’re excited about re-opening of the Library as an inventive, modern space for the people of Beeston and indeed Nottinghamshire - for reading, learning, culture and community activity.” The temporary library at Beeston Youth and Community Centre, West End will close on 29 July, and extended opening hours at nearby libraries in Stapleford and Toton will end on 15 July. The Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance has been operational for over 23 years and in that time our crew have responded to over 18,200 of the most serious and time critical 999 calls across our counties including road traffic collisions, cardiac arrests, sporting accidents, farming incidents, falls, and many more involving both adults and children. Since 1994 we have operated 4 helicopters, each one has offered an upgraded service and greater benefits to our patients, the AW169 is no exception. AS well as being our biggest and fastest aircraft to date, it is also the most technologically advanced. It is top of the range in the Helicopter Emergency Medical Service. The cost of our final week of flying our outgoing MD902 helicopter which has served the Charity well for the past 7 years has been very kindly funded by a donation from the Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance Countryside Appeal (NAACA) – a total donation of £44,100. NAACA have supported our Charity for many years and they felt that this would be a fitting tribute to our MD902 as it ceases operations for the Charity on 13th June . Care and support at home: Care and Support at Home Nottingham Post Carers Award 2017 – Our Winners We are delighted to announce that one of our CAREGivers, Debbie Greenham, has been chosen as the winner of the supporting independence category at the Nottingham Post Carer of the Year Awards 2017! Debbie was nominated by a client's family who wanted to show their appreciation for all her hard work and outstanding support for their father. Described as "the woman to have around in a crisis" and a "remarkable lady", Debbie has been a tower of strength for Caroline Bradley of Kimberley whose father Dennis Bradley has dementia. It was when Dennis had a fall at home in October that Debbie really showed her initiative and kindness. Caroline commented: "we feel blessed that our dad has the regular care of such a lovely lady". Over the festive season Debbie sang Christmas songs with Dennis encouraging him to sing along. Caroline said “I was really touched that she was doing what she could to help and encourage him to retain some of those fading memories". Upon receiving the nomination, Debbie was overwhelmed and then lost for words when her name was announced as the winner, but we all knew at Home Instead that this award was certainly well-deserved for all the outstanding work that Debbie does for her clients.

When Debbie collected her award she said; "singing along and encouraging Dennis to sign along helps him remember those precious memories and helps spark other memories, the littlest of things can bring back so many good memories". Debbie then went on to say that; "it's not just care for the client, you also care for the families and I have made some good friends along the way". We had a brilliant time at the award ceremony; it was both emotional and uplifting to hear the nominees' stories and it was fantastic to see Debbie collecting her award. Congratulations Debbie! A simple eye test could help solve the biggest global cause of irreversible blindness, glaucoma. Researchers have developed a simple, inexpensive diagnostic tool that allowed for the first time visualization of individual nerve cell death in patients with glaucoma. Early detection means doctors can start treatments before sight loss begins. Ongoing trials are investigating the potential of the test for other neurodegenerative conditions. In clinical trials, the pioneering diagnostic -- developed by researchers at University College London (UCL) and the Western Eye Hospital -- allowed doctors to see individual nerve cell death in the back of the eye. Loss of sight in patients with glaucoma is caused by the death of cells in the retina. Glaucoma affects 60 million people in the world, with 1 in 10 suffering total sight loss in both eyes. Early detection means we can start treatments before sight loss begins. The test also has potential for early diagnosis of other degenerative neurological conditions, including Parkinson's, Alzheimer's and multiple sclerosis. "Treatment is much more successful when it is begun in early stages of the disease, when sight loss is minimal. The technique developed uses a specially developed fluorescent marker which attaches to cell proteins when injected into patients. Sick cells appear as white fluorescent spots during eye examination. Researchers hope that eventually it may be possible for opticians to do the tests, enabling even earlier detection of the disease. Our view. "Detecting glaucoma early is vital as symptoms are not always obvious .Loss of sight as you age is an incredibly difficult disability, impacting quality of life and independence.” Whilst we look forward to the future with this new research, current equipment such as the OCT scan already offers highly detailed analysis of the back of the eye for conditions such as Glaucoma and Age Related macular Degeneration. UFO A CONSPIRACY OF STARS feat.Phil Mogg, Paul Raymond, Andy Parker, Vinnie Moore & Rob De Luca. Of course you don’t need to attach more importance to this piece of news than it necessarily has, but it certainly deserves to be mentioned: for the first time in more than 20 years, one of the most British rock bands in music history has recorded a studio album in their native country. Their latest offering is entitled A Conspiracy Of Stars, was cut by rock legend UFO and breathes that typically British easy-going confidence for which this band has been known for over 45 years. A strong release consisting of eleven songs which combine everything that the group surrounding frontman Phil Mogg stands for: meaty riffs, distinctive hooks, diverse songwriting, intelligent lyrics and that generally laid-back attitude which we have associated with UFO from the start. The fact that A Conspiracy Of Stars was produced and mixed by Chris Tsangarides (Judas Priest, Thin Lizzy, Gary Moore, among others) may be considered another successful element in a thoroughly consistent release. To cut a long story short: their 22nd studio recording to date sees UFO prove that past and present can be blended in a homogeneous whole.

A Conspiracy Of Stars presents UFO’s current line-up for the first time: along with the original members, Phil Mogg (vocals), Paul Raymond (keyboards, guitar) and Andy Parker (drums), lead guitarist Vinnie Moore has been a permanent member of the group since 2003, American bassist Rob De Luca joining the fold in 2012. De Luca is not only a brilliant instrumentalist but has also contributed two of the album tracks as a songwriter. The majority of the new material was composed by Vinnie Moore, the album also featuring a song by Paul Raymond and a collaboration between Raymond and De Luca. The lyrics were penned by frontman Phil Mogg. Talking of which: once again, Mogg proves his talent as a keen observer of the human species. Despite his exceptional position in the international rock’n’roll genre, the British vocalist has remained a man of the people. Mogg continues to be sympathetic to the working class, that’s where his roots are, those are the people that the UFO singer continues to feel close to. Listening to UFO’s new material, you can hear his origins in his songs, in his lyrics, which – despite plays on words and conscious ambiguities – prove his unconditional down-to-earthiness and produce wonderfully poetic phrases such as: “The scatter rollers coming down, summers been and turned around, it don’t seem so long ago, that you were my precious cargo,” he sings on ‘Precious Cargo’, an equally subtle declaration of love as the number ‘Killing Kind’, which has Mogg kick off with the words: “Tell a story about love and what

lovers find, a story of possession, the killing kind.” In view of so much verbal aesthetics it comes as no surprise that the UFO vocalist is appreciated the world over for his sensitive and carefully written lyrics. Lyrics and music for A Conspiracy Of Stars were written and composed in summer 2014. The band met for rehearsals at the Barn Room studios in Kent in mid-August before UFO moved a few miles further east to Chris Tsangarides’ Ecology Rooms studio, where they recorded their latest oeuvre, supported by the Greek Cypriot-British sound engineer, from late August until mid-September. Coincidentally, Tsangarides was working at the studio as a 14-year-old trainee when UFO recorded their debut album UFO 1 in England in 1970. HISTORY There are even more stories about UFO than they’ve composed songs. Any band who have been in the music business for more than 40 years are bound to have experienced difficult times, but also dazzling successes and spectacular events. UFO’s success story began in London way back in 1969, when vocalist Phil Mogg, drummer Andy Parker, guitarist Mick Bolton and bassist Pete Way formed the group. Even in the Seventies, the band distinguished themselves with their very own, unmistakable style, touching a nerve among their growing following with rock numbers like ‘Prince Kajuku’, ‘Follow You Home’ or ‘C’mon Everybody’ from their albums UFO 1, Flying and UFO Live. The global breakthrough arrived when German guitarist, Michael Schenker, joined the fold in 1973, having left his band Scorpions to follow an offer by Phil Mogg and Pete Way. UFO released three consecutive rock classics with Schenker (Phenomenon (1974), Force It (1975) and No Heavy Pettin’ (1976)), featuring classics like ‘Doctor Doctor’, ‘Shoot, Shoot’, or ‘Rock Bottom’. Following the arrival of keyboarder/rhythm guitarist Paul Raymond, UFO released their
two studio albums Lights Out (1977) and Obsession (1978), including the hit singles ‘Too Hot To Handle’, ‘Lights Out’ and ‘Only You Can Rock Me’. Their live cut Strangers In The Night came out in 1979 and is referred to by the press to this day as one of the best live releases of all time, while also signalling the end of the Mogg, Way, Schenker, Parker & Raymond line-up. The reorganised band underwent fifteen years marked by various eras and numerous lineup changes. To everyone’s surprise, autumn 1993 saw the return of the former UFO lineup consisting of Mogg, Way, Schenker, Parker and Raymond. This new edition of the classic team brought out Walk On Water, their first joint effort after one and a half decades, and embarked on a world tour. However, Schenker left UFO during the Walk On Water tour again to continue working with his own group, MSG, while Mogg & Way went on to release their second album, Chocolate Box. The UFO albums Covenant and Sharks, recorded by Mogg, Way and Schenker, arrived at the stores in 2000 and 2002. Vinnie Moore went on to follow in Schenker’s footsteps, who had returned to MSG, recording the songs on You Are Here with Jason Bonham. During the subsequent world tour, UFO cut a show in Germany, which was later released on the live album, Showtime, and the same-named DVD featuring additional bonus material. Later, Bonham bid his farewells and UFO’s original drummer Andy Parker returned on The Monkey Puzzle (2006) and its successors The Visitor (2009) and Seven Deadly (2012). So with Phil Mogg and Andy Parker, the band today consists of two original members, plus classic-era Paul Raymond and American guitar slinger Vinnie Moore – the perfect complement.

Salted Caramel, Butterscoth & Banana Pie Easiest Pudding Ever! Serves 6-8 Takes 20 minutes to prepare & a couple of hours to chill (if you can wait that long !) 1x 16cm cake tin with a spring release Cling film 100g Dark chocolate 125g Digestive biscuits 300ml Milk 1 x packet of Butterscotch Angel Delight 2 x Medium bananas 1/2 tin of Caramel sauce Large pinch of Salt Weigh 75g of the chocolate & melt in a glass bowl for about 1 minute (checking after 30 seconds - don't overcook) Bash the biscuits in a bag until fine crumbs - add to melted chocolate and stir well Line the cake tin with cling film - make sure it hangs over the sides Press the mixture into the tin and smooth surface Put into fridge to set Make the Butterscotch mousse Slice the bananas Take tin out of fridge & spread the caramel sauce over the base - sprinkle over the salt - cover with banana Spoon over the mousse and smooth the top - chill for a couple of hours Melt remaining 25g of chocolate (20-30 seconds) & drizzle over the pie ( I find a fork easiest to do this) Release the pie & remove the cling film - SLICE & IT'S READY TO DEVOUR !

Local teen Emma Snow writes about various topics and events each month in the Grapevine. “A voice for the young people in our Community”. Education Matters. Many of us take our education for granted in the UK. Whether you have finished or are still in education, I’m sure most of us can agree that at some point you have hated the pressure of school. I have had my moments, but overall I have really enjoyed my time in education. I am also extremely grateful for the endless opportunities my school and college life has presented me. However, not everyone is as lucky. Education is important because it helps to teach children about the world around them and prepares them for later life. The Global Partnership for education say ‘Education is a vital human right and plays a key role in human, social and economic development’. Despite vast progressions in the last few years, a staggering 263 million children across the world do not go to school, of which 61 million are of primary school age, 60 million are lower secondary school age and 142 million are upper secondary school age. This is worrying because these are the next generation and it isn’t their fault that they aren’t able to have an education. Not only that but 25

million children will never even begin Primary School and for this number to be lowered, awareness and aid needs to increase. Restricted education results in poverty from generation to generation. Everyone should have access to education so that they can have more chances in life, such as better employment opportunities and better health. However, efforts are being made. In 2015, the United Nations General Assembly developed a list of Global Goals for Sustainable Development. The Global Goal 4 on education aims to ‘ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.’ Additionally, campaigns such as ‘Send My Friend to School’, which is run by the coalition of the Global Campaign for Education, is helping to raise awareness of the inequalities within education. They also signed up to the sustainable
development goal for all children to have a quality education up to the age of 15 by 2030. However, by current projections, this won’t be achieved until 2084 which is over 50 years too late. The ‘Send My Friend to School’ campaign is not a charity, but it is raising awareness and encouraging governments worldwide to plug

the $39 billion gap in education funding. So far over 10,000 schools and youth groups in the UK have been involved. Sophia Buxton, a 14-year-old student from George Spencer Academy in Stapleford, is part of the global campaign and wants to raise awareness in the local community. Sophia thinks it is important for the local community to get involved because ‘global education is everyone’s problem. Children are the future of the world and a lack of education silences them and limits change in future generations. It is unfair that millions of innocent children have to suffer’. Girlguiding’s Jill is the Pride of Broxtowe Girlguiding Nottinghamshire’s Jill Barnes shook her head in disbelief when she was announced as the Pride of Broxtowe Borough on Thursday 22 June. Having thought she was simply at the awards evening as a guest, Jill was completely taken by surprise when the Mayor of Broxtowe, Councillor Halimah Khaled, revealed that she had been selected to receive the most prestigious award of the night.The presentation of the Pride of Broxtowe Borough award was the finale of an evening hosted by Broxtowe Borough Council and the Nottingham Post at Beeston Fields’ Walled Garden. Compère for the occasion was BBC Radio Nottingham’s Mark Dennison, who described Jill Barnes as ‘a genuine inspiration to us all.’ Announcing Jill’s honour, Councillor Khaled said: ‘Celebrating an incredible 60 years in Girlguiding this year, our winner has shown unwavering dedication, commitment and passion, supporting literally hundreds of young people to achieve their dreams. In recent years, her experience, knowledge and counsel have continued to be of great support to the local division and district teams.’ In addition to Councillor Khaled, the judging panel included former Mayor of Broxtowe Councillor Graham Harvey and town centre manager Matt Batterham. The Nottingham Post reported on the tough time which the panel had experienced in sorting through all the

fantastic nominations, but that they had picked the one entry that stood out from them all. Jill Barnes has held various roles in her 60 years with Girlguiding, including that of District Commissioner for Beeston: all her service years have been with 6th Beeston Guides, where she is still a much-valued unit helper. ‘I’m here representing Girlguiding and this has been a lovely evening,’ she said afterwards, admitting that it was heart-warming to see so many of the girls who have come through her Guide units in the room. ‘It was a complete surprise – someone kept this a very good secret!’ Members of Girlguiding Nottinghamshire everywhere joined with County Commissioner Jackie Brocklehurst in congratulating Jill on her achievement. ‘We’re delighted that Jill’s exceptional contribution to Girlguiding in Nottinghamshire has been recognised,’ said Jackie. ‘And we’re all amazed that her brilliant colleagues in Beeston division managed to keep the news a secret for so long! ’Girlguiding Nottinghamshire relies on the support of adult volunteers like Jill Barnes to keep such a diversity of extra-curricular opportunities open to girls and young women across the county. In addition to an ongoing need for unit leaders and helpers, there are also plenty of interesting non-uniformed roles for volunteers offering ad hoc help. £400,000 funding boost for Notts veterans Nottinghamshire ex-service veterans are set to benefit from a £400,000 grant to help improve their health and well-being. The St John and Red Cross Defence Medical Welfare Service (DMWS) and the Alzheimer’s Society have teamed up with Nottinghamshire County Council and successfully bid for funding, which is managed by the Community Covenant Aged Veterans Fund. It is estimated 5.8 percent of Nottinghamshire’s 750,000 population are ex-service community, which amounts to 43,500 residents. £106,000 of the total money has been awarded to the County Council, which will be spent on a project support worker for two years who will help link up veterans over the age of 65 with local projects and activities to help them be more active in their community. The funding will support these projects, which could include a war memories archive, projects which link veterans with younger generations, or a befriending service to reduce social isolation and get more out of later life. The Council will also be working with local veteran services to identify and guide vulnerable veterans to services and activities in their communities.
