Editors Note Hello everyone, Despite having the vaccination and boosters for Covid, I unfortunately caught it and must say have been quite ill with it. Weeks later I’m still not over it, and fingers crossed it won’t be too long before I feel well again. My sympathies go out to anyone who has had Covid in the past. Let’s hope everyone remains healthy and well. This month I wrote a piece about a day trip I took with Blue Skies The Limit and Gardener Steve a few months ago. Anyone looking to have a day out to somewhere they haven’t been before, I would thoroughly recommend having a day out with them, it was so enjoyable, I hope to go again sometime in the future. BIG BACKING FOR MUSIC-A-THON A music-a-thon at Beeston Methodist Church is proving to be a big hit. A wide range of performers have signed up to sing and play in half-hour slots on Saturday, August 20 when the church will be filled with non-stop music for 24 hours. Organiser Fiona Fyfe said: “We have had a tremendous response and all the daytime playing slots are now filled. We hope as many people as possible will come along to support local musicians playing madrigals to musicals, and everything in between.” The event – raising money to overhaul and update the impressive 1902 church organ - will be open to the public from 10.30am to 10.30pm on August 20.All are welcome to go along to support local musicians, who will include organists, a string trio, vocalists, pianists, a flute quartet, choirs, folk musicians, a trumpet trio and a baroque ensemble. As well as donating in-person at the event, supporters can also donate via our JustGiving page using this QR code.

Welcome to our new gardening feature Hello Gardeners… It‛s Gardener Steve here! and I‛m bringing you gardening tips, news and events. Hello Gardeners… I do hope you are all having a lovely summer?, as I sit here and write we are experiencing a heatwave and in our gardens in water water water!, it’s kept me busy watering as have a lot of plants in pots, but it’s a job I love and I do them either first thing in the morning or in the evening, I find it a very relaxing job, it gives me time to take stock of my plants, and even talk to a few! How you been getting on in your gardens this summer I would love to know. Again this year I have had time in my own garden as some gardening events are still not taking place this year. I’m usually busy jetting off to Chelsea Flower Show in May but this year the show takes place in September so I will be able to tell you all about once I have visited. Here are some jobs for you to do in your garden this month… Happy Gardening Everybody! • • • • • • • • •

Pick runner beans regularly to prevent them becoming stringy and to make room for developing beans. Keep on top of weeds as they compete with plants for nutrients and water. Stake tall or top heavy Dahlias and Lilies to prevent wind and rain damage. Keep patio container plants well watered and feed with a liquid high potash fertiliser every fortnight. Trim your lavender plants after they’ve finished flowering to keep them compact. Continue to feed tomato plants with a tomato fertiliser and remove leaves lower down on the plant to help with air circulation and prevent disease. Dead-heading is an important job this month - bedding plants, perennials and roses to stop them self-seeding, encourage further flowering and improves appearance of plant. Apply a high-potash fertiliser such as tomato food once fruits start to form on peppers, cucumber and aubergines. Pinch out the top of tomato plants to concentrate the growth into the fruit that has already formed. Aim to leave 5 or 6 trusses of fruit per plant.

Plant of the month - Echinacea purpurea purple coneflower Echinacea are clump-forming rhizomatous perennials with simple or pinnately lobed leaves and solitary, long-stalked daisies with prominent conical central disks attractive to butterflies. Echinacea purpurea is an upright perennial with coarsely hairy, ovate shaped leaves and flower-heads to 12cm across with light purple rays and brown central cone. Ideal for cut flowers, flower borders and beds, cottage & informal gardens, prairie planting, wildlife gardens, and wildflower meadows. Flowering period: Summer • Height and Spread: 1-1.5 metre x 0.5metre • Position: Full sun part shade • Soil: Any soil but well drained • Hardiness: Hardy • Propagation: Propagate by seed sown in spring. • Propagate by division in spring or autumn,or by root cuttings from late autumn to early winter. • Pruning: Cut back stems as the blooms fade to encourage new flower • Pest and Diseases: Generally pest and disease free Derby college students create show garden at Gardeners World Live Horticultural students at Derby Colleges Broomfield Hall, have had a chance to showcase their work, and build a show garden at this year’s Gardeners World Live exhibition at the NEC in Birmingham last month. The mature students from Derby College, led by horticultural lecturer Mike Baldwin, are on a level three study programme, which has been designed to learn skills and knowledge in surveying, design, plantsman-ship and construction - ideal for students who want to establish a gardening business. As part of the part-time study programme, the students are all creating several different elements of a show garden which was designed by one of the student’s, Rachel Pratt in 2020, but the garden build was put on hold due to the pandemic, and its now finally come to fruition and again this year is supported by the Lilian Prime MS Centre in Derby. The Metamorphosis Garden is designed to mark change – reflecting different themes including changes within humans, technology and in nature, as well as the transition of the Derby MS Society to the Lilian Prime MS Centre, which provides support to people affected by Multiple Sclerosis and other neurological conditions. The design is inspired by the quote “if nothing ever changed, there’d be no butterflies” (unknown) You enter the garden through some butterfly gates, and then you can follow the spiralling metal where the quote could be read to the central feature. There is a seat in the corner underneath a lilac pergola, this sits opposite another curved seat in front of a water cascade planted up with marginal aquatics. TO ADVERTISE PLEASE CALL

To reflect the neurological part of the garden, there is a living wall in the shape of human brain, made out of grasses, ferns and mosses and in the foreground some topiary. Around the garden are tiled trees that resemble human nerve cells. Mike Baldwin explained: “Rachel has created an amazing garden design full of highly imaginative planting, structural and technological features which I am sure will amaze both the show judges and visitors alike. Everyone has worked incredibly hard to create the different features of the garden and we will spend many more hours constructing this at the NEC ahead of the show.” Peter Milner, chair of trustees at the Lilian Prime MS Centre in Derby, continued:“We have worked with the Horticultural team at Broomfield Hall for several years to provide the brief and inspiration for their gardens at Gardeners World Live. This time we challenged the students to produce a garden design that recognised and addressed the wide range of difficulties that people affected by Multiple Sclerosis might experience. The students spent time researching MS and speak to several of our Centre users and an amazing array of design ideas were presented for us to judge.” The garden was given a bronze award and the show judges gave helpful feedback. Feedback from visitors to the garden have been very well received, as it was a garden with lots of easy ideas for gardeners to take home and execute in their own gardens. Day trip to RHS Bridgewater and Blue Peter Garden at Media City, Manchester Saturday 20th August 2022. - Our first stop of the day will be Media City, Salford Quay’s which is home to the original Blue Peter garden and is in the landscaped green space within the media city the base for BBC and ITV studios in the north west, time will allow to grab a beverage at the many cafes andrestaurants, or explore the renovated historic quays the choice is yours! It’s then on to the new RHS Bridgewater gardens, a short drive away, it is the fifth RHS garden and one of the largest gardening projects undertaken in Europe in recent years. The transformation of this 154-acre green space is an amazing asset to the northwest and to visitors from around the world. The site was originally home to Worsley New Hall, a grand house that survived a fire and two World Wars before being demolished due to disrepair in the 1940s Tom Stuart-Smith was to create the masterplan along with a fantastic team, alongside award winning garden designers, have brought ‘gardens within a garden’ to life by blending history with world-class horticulture. So, on arrival you enter The Welcome Building, home to the plant centre, gift store, information hub and large restaurant. Its then on into the gardens where you can find the Worsley Welcome Garden, The Weston Walled Garden, Kitchen Garden, Chinese Streamside Garden, The Paradise Garden, Middle Wood, Ellesmere Lake plus more throughout. The garden has only been open around 15 months, and in that time I visited many times throughout and it’s great that Blue Skies The Limit will be heading there this summer. With a full day ahead of you, your day starts off with a breakfast roll and a hot drink from our pick-up points either the Navigation Inn, Breaston or the Plough Inn, Sandiacre. Our Day Trip with Blue Skies The Limit and Gardener Steve by the Grapevine Editor.
What a great day we all had with Gardener Steve and Michelle from Blue Skies The Limit. (Photo of them above taken at Dorothy Clive Garden). As a keen gardener I decided to go on this trip with them to the The Dorothy Clive Garden, in Willoughbridge, Market Drayton, Shropshire and then to Bridgemere Garden Centre, Nantwich in Cheshire .Part of the group met at the Plough in Sandiacre, and was welcomed with a delicous hot bacon and egg roll with coffee, (in with the price). Steve made everyone welcome, then Michelle arrived on the coach with the second group from Breaston. There was plenty of space on the coach, (and a toilet on board) , and room underneath the coach for the plants , my small concern was how can we get loads of plants on here without sitting on them or tripping over them?, of course, it’s a travel coach, there was room underneath. Everyone was friendly and looking forward to visiting these places. Since the Corona Virus lockdown, we all said that it was nice to get out again. 18

I haven’t been on many coach trips, as I usually drive to most places, so it was a good opportunity to go on the trip, along with my husband and other like minded people. A couple of people had arrived on their own, and by the end of the day had made friends with others on the trip and planned to go again . We arrived at Dorothy Clive Gardens, a place I had never heard of until Steve mentioned it to me . He certainly chose the best time to take us, the place was beautiful with all the Rhododenrums out in full bloom, with every colour imaginable. It wasn’t too busy, and we could walk around on our own and meet up with everyone at a time allocated and suitable for everyone.We had enough time there, and felt it wasn’t rushed, (definately not like the organised trips I’ve seen on t.v, where they are all being marched around in a large group, not having time to see anything). Our coach was available if anyone wanted to just rest before we moved on the the next place.After admiring the plants, and the waterfall , the serene calmness of walking through the trees was a joy. The Laburnum arch was fabulous and many photographs were taken. Later we had coffee and cake in the tea room. Tucked away amongst the trees, a wedding took place, it looked so natural and beautiful. Next stop was Bridgemere Gardens, to say its one of the biggest garden centres in the UK was an understatement ! it was huge, a sprawling 50 acres. Bridgemere have Show Gardens that are set in 6 acres and is home to 13 stunning individual gardens, seven of which are Gold and Silver Medal award-winning gardens from the RHS Chelsea, Hampton Court and Tatton Flower Shows. Bridgemere Show Gardens are composed of thirteen separate gardens,including a Cottage Garden, a Victorian Topiary Garden, a Woodland Walk, a Pond and Waterfall Garden, and a Fryers Rose Garden and many more. Steve told us that we could meet up in the restaurant/cafe for lunch if anyone wanted to. I visited the farm shop there and bought dinner to take home, beautiful home made food. Armed with an acer, and plants all in excellent condition, we headed back to the coach. On the way back, Steve had organised a fun garden themed quiz for us, we enjoyed and learned so much. Both Steve and Michelle made sure everyone had enjoyed their day, and Steve was pleased to answer any garden related questions, and through his extensive knowledge and passion, all were answered. Jazz is back in Beeston – Big style. Devoid of jazz for the past five years Beeston can now boast the return of regular jazz sessions thanks to the Royal British Legion. The club on Hall Croft has secured Nottingham Jazz Orchestra Big Band to appear every month. Club entertainment officer Dave Clifford commented: “This opens the RBL club to jazz lovers from Beeston and across the region. We are proud to welcome NJO to their new home” The first gig for NJO in Beeston is on Sunday 21st August at 8pm featuring local vocalist Jeanie Barton. Jeanie enthused: “It’s great to be welcoming the prestigious Nottingham Jazz Orchestra to Beeston - another proud feather in our town’s creative cap. I’m very much looking forward to singing with them again, this time on home turf and very close to my birthday” Formed in the 1970’s, the NJO is 16-piece big band that has been blowing up a storm ever since. It’s Nottingham’s longest-running jazz big band, and has been the launch-pad for many of today’s top-line professional players. Join us for our third Green Festival of 2022 at Pasture Road Recreation Ground in Stapleford Following on from two successful green festival events held already this year, Broxtowe residents will have the opportunity to attend the third of four Green Festivals being held in the borough in 2022. Residents will be able to discover how we can all make lifestyle changes to reduce our carbon footprint - this will not only help to tackle climate change, but it will also align with the Council’s commitment to becoming carbon neutral by 2027. Expert delivering a sustainability talk at Colliers Wood The festival will take place on Saturday 6th August at Pasture Road Recreation Ground, Stapleford between 12.00pm and 3.00pm. Our Green festivals are free to attend. There will be environmentally-themed stalls along with nature activities for all ages to take part in, along with a variety of organisations to meet and speak with. Interactive stalls on how Broxtowe locals are combatting climate change including: Food - Music - Activities for children There will be opportunities to find out from leading sustainability experts on how we can all incorporate small lifestyle changes which can add up to make a big difference. There will be advice on topics including recycling, composting, climate change, wildflowers, biodiversity and much more. Hospice honours volunteers and staff for 570 years of long service . Over fifty volunteers and staff have received long service awards from local charity Treetops Hospice – totalling an incredible 570 years of service. Over half the volunteers receiving awards are based in the hospice’s nineteen charity shops located across Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. Income from the shops help provide nursing care and emotional support for local patients with life-limiting conditions, those who’ve been bereaved and their families. Georgina Murphy received her five year award for volunteering at the Treetops charity shop in Long Eaton. “Part of my motivation for volunteering was to give something back to Treetops for all the support I got when looking after my late husband. The friendship and camaraderie in the team is great and I would recommend volunteering to anybody. It’s amazing.” Treetops welcomes more volunteers to get involved in their local charity shop as Anna Bown, Volunteer Services Co-ordinator, explained: “We are very grateful to all our volunteers for their hard work and dedication over the years. They play such a vital role. With their contribution and continued support, we can continue to provide nurses to care for patients at the very end of life, in their own home. A message from Councillor Richard MacCrae. As a Stapleford North Ward Councillor I am excited to let you know that works have started on the play area refurbishment at Pasture Road Recreation Ground in Stapleford. It’s planned to have the work completed early August, so it can be used over the school holidays. The play area will have a selection of modern equipment to appeal to a range of abilities and feature an accessible surface. Outside the fenced area will be a big basket swing and for the adults a small fitness area will be provided. The design is based on public consultation undertaken in 2021. In general, the construction industry has a poor reputation for sustainability, but we have designed this project to have a minimal environmental footprint. All the old wood and steel play equipment will be sent for recycling, the old concrete will go for crushing into building aggregate, and the bark surfacing will be saved and used as a mulch to conserve moisture in a new woodland plantation this winter. Zero waste from the project will go to landfill. Infilling the old bark pit will be done with recycled aggregate and the new play surface will be made from shredded rubber salvaged from scrap cars! Easy Cheesy Egg Muffins Make these mini egg muffins for an easy breakfast or lunch with the kids. Add, bacon or chopped ham or even smoked salmon. Good way to use up any left over bits of food.
Ingredients 1 tbsp oil 150g broccoli , finely chopped 1 red pepper , finely chopped 2 spring onions , sliced 6 large eggs 1 tbsp milk large pinch of smoked paprika 50g cheddar or gruyère, grated small handful of chives , chopped (optional) 50
Method Heat the oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 4. Brush half the oil in an 8-hole muffin tin. Heat the remaining oil in a frying pan and add the broccoli, pepper and spring onions. Fry for 5 mins. Set aside to cool. Step 2 Whisk the eggs with the milk, smoked paprika and half the cheese in a bowl. Add the cooked veg. Pour the egg mixture into the muffin holes and top each with the remaining cheese and a few chives, if you like. Bake for 15-17 mins or until golden brown and cooked through.

Earlier this year Samantha took part in the powerful Domestic Abuse portrait exhibition ‹I AM›. Alongside 38 other survivors, the 7 people who had to withdraw for personal safety and those who are in hiding with witness protection who shared a story but could not have a portrait taken, she shared her personal experience of coercive control publicly. The exhibition was created by Award winning Portrait photographer Allie Crewe, commissioned by Safelives UK and Manchester’s SICK! Festival and an exhibit of 12 of these portraits was opened by The Duchess of Cornwall. BWP can support businesses by helping to produce a Domestic Abuse Policy and the related procedures, advising on implementing the Policy, providing awareness sessions to support those affected by domestic abuse, and providing resources for employees.
