Welcome to our gardening feature! It’s Gardener Steve here! Wishing you all a very happy and healthy new gardening year, I will be bringing you gardening tips, news and events plus fun along way with my garden related quizzes! One thing for sure, whatever life throws at us this year, we have our gardens, back yards, public parks and green space’s which I think until 2020 never realised actually how important they were. In this month's gardening I have a few jobs for you to be getting on with as we take our gardens into spring, don’t forget to check out my plant of the month it’s a real winner in the spring garden. Happy gardening everybody! Here are some jobs to be getting on with this month... •

Take a look around the garden checking for frost damage. Cut back any affected stems.

Cut back shrubs grown for their colourful winter stems such as Cornus and Salix cultivars. Cut them back to their bases, This will encourage vibrant new stems.

If your lawn needs mowing choose a dry day to complete this. Ensure the blades are set higher than usual at this time of year

Feed trees, shrubs and hedges with a slow-release fertiliser by lightly forking it into the soil surface

Plant out any forced flower bulbs in the garden, such as hyacinths and daffodils which have finished flowering indoors

Gardener Steve’s Top Tip!. Now is the time to buy and plant summer flowering bulbs, corms and tubers these are what will fill your summer garden with colour, and just like in the Autumn with spring bulbs there is vast range of varieties to choose from. Here are just a few that you can go for Allium - With spheres of purple blooms which are followed by architectural seed heads Oriental Lily - Beautiful blooms and a sensational fragrance Begonia - These are the tuberous types and these can be added in with annual bedding schemes and hanging baskets. Gladiolus - So these are corms and we get these great spikes of flowers giving height to your borders. And don’t forget Dahlias, these are a real garden gem with lots and lots of varieties Gardener Steve’s plant of the month. RIBES SANGUINEUM (Flowering ornamental currant) Ribes is a deciduous, spring-flowering, ornamental shrub with pendent clusters of rose pink, tubular flowers which cover the bush. This popular form of flowering currant is compact and upright in habit making it ideal for where border space is limited or for growing as an informal, flowering hedge. To prevent the plant from becoming congested in late summer remove any dead or diseased branches and reduce the flowered shoots to a strong, lower bud. The flowering currant is a great performer for any spring garden, blooming every year without any special care needed to be given. They have a pungent scent that is stronger when the foliage is rubbed or brushed against. Ribes sanguineum originates from dry open woods and rocky slopes in western North America as far south as California. It was introduced in to Britain in 1817. Flowering period: Early spring Height and Spread: 7ft x 5ft Position: Full sun Soil: Fertile, Well-drained soil Hardiness: Hardy Propagation: By hardwood cuttings in the winter Pruning: In late summer remove any dead, diseased or crossing branches to maintain a nice framework and cut back shoots which have flowered Pest and Diseases: Aphids can cause problems and can be affected by a leaf spot, powdery mildews, honey fungus and coral spot To advertise call 07854990608 or visit our website www.beechpublications.co.uk

The census will include questions about your sex, age, work, health, education, household size and ethnicity. And, for the first time, there will be a question asking people whether they have served in the armed forces, as well as voluntary questions for those aged 16 and over on sexual orientation and gender identity. Results will be available within 12 months, although personal records will be locked away for 100 years, kept safe for future generations. The Arc Cinema on track to light up Beeston this summer. Long-term plans to boost Beeston town centre take another step forward with the formal handover of a completed cinema building to the firm which will open it later this year. The Arc Cinema has now taken possession of the building which forms the entertainment centrepiece of a £50m redevelopment expected to bring more people and more growth to the town.Arc cinema sample image inside with screen and seating area The project milestone means the eightscreen deluxe cinema is still on track to premiere to the public this summer 2021. The Arc Cinema team has now taken over from the main contractor, Bowmer + Kirkland, and begin installation of eight digital laser projectors and screens, stateof-the-art immersive surround sound systems, luxury leather recliner seats, a cafe and bar. The new development aims to significantly boost the town’s evening economy and create new jobs. It will create at least 150 new jobs, boost footfall and town centre regeneration. Councillor Steve Carr, deputy leader of Broxtowe Borough Council, said: “We want Beeston to be a destination town and this cinema complex will play a big role in its future prosperity. Not only will it attract more people to the town and create jobs, but it will give people who live in

20

Beeston something to be proud of too.” Mike Atkinson, Contract Manager for Bowmer + Kirkland, said: “Little did we know at the start of this project how challenging the past year would have been, but our team has worked hard to ensure the scheme finished on time. The people of Beeston can look forward to the future with this exciting new leisure development in the town.” Brian Gilligan of The Arc Cinema, said: “The time has come to put our exciting plans into action to bring Beeston’s new

cinema to life - and we couldn’t be more thrilled! Beeston’s a great place full of great people and we can’t wait to give them the state-of-the-art cinema they want and deserve.” Councillor Greg Marshall from the Project Board added: “As a council, we’re committed to investing in our town centres in a way which helps them to overcome some of the challenges they face and provides new opportunities for all sections of the community. We're really proud to be offering some positive news in these difficult times. “Alongside the investment in Beeston, we are also pursuing a Towns Fund bid in Stapleford and pushing for significant investment in HS2 at Toton, as well as the Borough’s other town centres.”

Message from the Trowell Parish Council. Restoration works completed on the Trowell Parish Hall. On the 25th of June 2020, Trowell Parish Hall when opened, was completely flooded. Every room had been affected. It’s amazing how much damage a faulty section of the heating system can cause. Almost immediately, Staff and Councillors began to work hard to remove as much water as possible, hoping that in doing so, would enable the drying process to begin. Sadly, it quickly became apparent that the damage caused would require specialised equipment and knowledge to complete this task. The Parish Hall had only re-opened 6 months prior to this, after an extensive refurbishment, which lasted almost 6 months. When the removal of all the flooring and kitchen fittings commenced, dthis included the main hall flooring, it became apparent that Asbestos mitigation previously carried out, had been disturbed. Specialists were appointed to test, remove and dispose of it. Finally drying began, this took 3 weeks. When complete, everything removed had to be refitted, resulting in new flooring throughout the Parish Hall, new kitchen units and a complete redecoration. Eight long months of disruption ended, and the work was completed. We are very pleased to announce that Trowell Parish Hall is now ready and waiting for Covid 19 restrictions to be lifted. We are looking forward to the return of all our regular hirers and especially new hirers. Trowell Parish Hall is a versatile venue that can be used for a wide range of activities and meetings. For all hall enquires please contact Mrs. J Murden the Hall Manager. Email hallmanager@trowell.org.uk or telephone 0115 9989774 Monday to Friday 10am to 2pm.

FRESH START FOR HENS Well, what a year we are having, Covid and Avian flu! Simply netting the cover of your run, even if this restricts your girls freedom for a while, sorts out the Avian flu aspect. Thankfully this lockdown ( unlike March ‘20) has not prevented movement of the girls. In late Feb we rehome 3000 CAGED hens. This is good news for Fresh Start as many farmers are reluctant to allow us to rescue the caged girls. We never name our farmers, we are not in the business of shaming, we just want to get those hens out and into forever homes. There are many fancy breeds of hen out there, very pretty to look at but I can guarantee there is NOTHING so pleasurable as watching a skinny, barely feathered, nervous hen blossom into a fully feathered beauty who recognises and welcomes her owner. The Lohman Brown (more ginger really) is a very friendly egg laying breed. Considering the rotten start to life they have had its amazing how much they welcome human company and companionship. From past experience I haven’t found this with the fancy breeds, they remain 32

aloof on the whole. Inexperienced hen owners can be daunted by the idea of giving a home to a rescue. Don’t be. They are actually very easy to look after and we give never ending support and advice. No question is too silly, ever. You won’t regret it! Please like/share: Ilkeston Fresh Start for Hens on Facebook. More info Dee 07946 653173

Little Grapevine Tips for MEMORY “What’s my password for this website?”

Shape your numbers. Assign a shape to each number: 0 looks like a ball or ring; 1 is a pen; 2 is a swan; 3 looks like handcuffs; 4 is a sailboat; 5, a pregnant woman; 6, a pipe; 7, a boomerang; 8, a snowman; and 9, a tennis racket. To remember your ATM PIN (4298, say), imagine yourself on a sailboat (4), when a swan (2) tries to attack you. You hit it with a tennis racket (9), and it turns into a snowman (8). Try forgetting that image!

Rhyme it.

Think of words that rhyme with the numbers 1 through 9 (knee for 3, wine for 9, etc.). Then create a story using the rhyming words: A nun (1) in heaven (7) banged her knee (3), and it became sore (4).

End-of-life nursing service receives £100k donation from Barclays. An end-of-life nursing service, which helps alleviate pressures on the NHS, has beenawarded a donation of £100,000 from Barclays. Leading Derbyshire hospice, Treetops Hospice Care, launched the ‘Roaming Nurse Service’ in April last year as part of its emergency response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Every evening, the Roaming team – made up of a Treetops Hospice at Home nurse and Healthcare Assistant – responds to calls from families with a loved one at the end of life, who has chosen to die at home. Nurses assist with administering medication, helping with pain relief and symptom management. The £100,000 funding has come from the Barclays 100x100 UK COVID-19 Community Aid Package.Matt Ceiley, from Derby, is amongst those who’ve benefited from the Roaming Nurse team, to help care for his late father, Mick: “The Treetops Roaming Nurse Service were so quick to get there. There were times when dad needed pain relief or medication that without the Roaming Nurses, he wouldn’t have been able to have as quickly. All you wanted was for him to be to be more comfortable. We couldn’t have managed without the Treetops nurses who were all so compassionate, professional and knowledgeable. It was so important and meant wecould trust their night-time care, get some rest and be there with dad at the end.“It’s only when you need these services that you realise how vital they are. There are some things you can do without, but hospice care isn’t one of them.”

Nigel Higgins, Barclays Chairman, said: “COVID-19 has created an unprecedented social and economic impact in the UK, with many experiencing greater hardship due to the crisis.Incredible charities, such as Treetops Hospice Care, have been playing a vital role in the UK’s response to the pandemic, ensuring urgent help reaches those most in need of support. “As a bank we have been doing all we can for our customers, clients and colleagues, and we hope that by partnering with Treetops and many other charities across the UK, collectively we can ensure that as many people as possible in the communities in which we live and work are supported through this crisis.”

Treetops Hospice at Home Manager, Teresa Smith, said: “We are absolutely delighted to receive this significant funding for the Roaming Nurse Service.Since the service began, our Roaming Teams have made over 900 visits to patients at home, potentially saving up to 1,000 call outs from the Derby Royal Hospital, the111 out-of-hours service, and possible hospital admissions. We support families that might not need a Treetops nurse to sit with their loved one for a whole night but might need to call with a one-off request. They now contact the Roaming Service who can respond quickly and who have an existing knowledge of the patient and their needs.”

Care and Support at Home –

Top tips for boosting your mood Given everything that has gone on over the past 12 months it is important to keep an upbeat state of mind in order to lead a positive lifestyle. Eating healthy foods and exercising are obvious ways to remain fit and healthy, but there are also many other adjustments we can make to improve our mental health and state of mind. Here are a few mood boosting tips; Laugh. As adults we often forget to just enjoy ourselves and laugh more. Laughing releases endorphins into our body which increase serotonin levels in our brain, causing us to instantly feel happier. Life doesn’t need to always be taken too seriously! Practice gratitude. It is important to recognise what we’re grateful for, acknowledge it, and appreciate it. When you wake up in the morning, try and think of a few things that you are grateful for and notice the difference it makes to your mood. Talk to someone. Whether it is a friend, relative or even a neighbour, knowing you have someone you can turn to, can help to put your mind at ease. Don’t forget to be there for someone else too, as this can brighten your mood just as much as you have the satisfaction of knowing you have helped someone else. Surround yourself with positive scents and sounds. Sometimes when we feel our mood dipping it is good surround yourself with scents which can uplift your mood. Lavender can be seen as relaxing, whereas peppermint can help to soothe your overactive mind. This can work just as well with your favourite perfume. Listen to your favourite music and light a candle; you may find yourself feeling great afterwards!

54

Take deep breaths. We don’t often concentrate on our breathing because it’s a natural function, but consciously focusing on your breathing and taking deep breaths can relieve stress and increase relaxation. Simply place one hand on the abdomen and one hand on the lower ribs and take a breath that starts in your abdomen and works its way up your body. Control your breathing by breathing in for 3 to 5 seconds, hold for the same amount of time and exhale the air out through your mouth slowly. Do this for 3 minutes and you will feel the stress melt away. Take every opportunity you have to do some exercise. It does not have to be anything too challenging; just popping out for a walk around the block or even doing some chair exercises when you are watching television will make a difference. Getting up and stretching your legs every so often will help your circulation and you will feel better. Finally, although not applicable at the moment, when you are able to go out (or there is somebody who can take you) find an activity you enjoy which might not be too far from you. Whether it is singing, dancing, swimming, drawing, woodwork, knitting, etc. there is quite a lot available. Not only will you have an opportunity to enjoy an activity but will also get to know other people and socialise a bit. Some of these simple tips are all that is needed to help us feel better about ourselves. by Primo Sule – primo.sule@homeinstead.co.uk

VACCINATION INFORMATION In line with national guidance, we have now opened COVID-19 vaccination booking for people who are identified in JCVI cohort 6. This includes: Anyone between the ages of 16 to 65 with underlying health conditions which put them at a higher risk of serious disease or mortality. This is also known as “clinically vulnerable.” More details about who is eligible can be found on the NHS Cohort 6 Go Live FAQ document. • Anyone who is in receipt of carer’s allowance. • Anyone who is the main carer of an elderly or disabled person, whose welfare may be at risk if the carer falls ill. If you are eligible under one of the above categories, you can book your COVID-19 vaccination appointment by visiting this booking link: https://www.swiftqueue.co.uk/nottinghamc19v-clinv.php or call the local booking line on 0115 883 4640 between 8am – 8pm during weekdays and 9am – 5pm on weekends. Younger adults in long-stay in-patient, nursing and residential care settings are also eligible for vaccination under cohort 6 but will be vaccinated by our ‘roving team’ of vaccinators. The roving team will be in touch with care homes directly to book in dates for vaccinations. If you are not eligible for vaccination, please do not try to book in for your COVID-19 vaccination appointment. It is important these appointments are protected for those who are now eligible under this cohort to help protect them against COVID-19. Letters and texts to those eligible under the criteria, have also been sent to invite them to book for their COVID-19 vaccination. If you are eligible, you do not need to wait for your letter to book in. 56

Testing will be available for those who are asymptomatic. You don't need to book an appointment, just turn up for your free test. Community Testing opens at Stapleford Library at 1pm on Thursday 25th February and then: Sundays - Closed Mondays - Closed Tuesdays - 8am - 6pm Wednesday - 7am - 5pm Thursdays - 8am - 6pm Fridays - 8am - 6pm Saturday - 8.30am - 1pm 1 in 3 people with COVID-19 have no symptoms so could be spreading the disease without knowing it. We are broadening testing to identify those showing no symptoms but who have COVID-19, so we can find positive cases more quickly and break chains of transmission. Getting tested is a really easy way to help keep loved ones, work mates and our community safe. The testing is open to anyone, working age, not showing symptoms of

COVID-19 or who hasn’t tested positive in the last 90 days. The rapid turnaround tests supplied by NHS Test and Trace can generate a result in under an hour, sent to the resident’s phone via text. If you have COVID-19 symptoms, you should book a COVID-19 test via the NHS Test and Trace service - book a test online or call NHS Test and Trace on 119. Businesses are encouraged to promote the new facility in Stapleford to their staff members, particularly those who are unable to work from home, which will help identify cases and keep their workforce safe. You might want to talk to us about pre-booking a regular slot for your business at our community testing site. For more information and FAQs, visit www.broxtowe.gov.uk/communitytesting

Broxtowe Borough Council Urges Residents to Use Parks Responsibly and Stay Safe. Broxtowe Borough Council have asked residents in the local area to remember to stick to their most local park and not make unnecessary trips to other areas during National Lockdown. Councillor Helen Skinner at Broxtowe Borough Council says:“Our parks and green spaces play a crucial role in supporting our local community’s physical and mental health – now more so than ever. Lockdowns are stressful for everyone and spending time outside can lead to a dramatic improvement in health and wellbeing at this time, but please remember to act responsibly when visiting our parks and using our play areas”. “We would like to ask residents to respect the sites, please follow all COVID -19 restrictions, maintain your distance and look to use the areas at times when they are likely to be less busy. Let’s keep working together to keep Broxtowe safe for everyone”. Parks such as Bramcote Hills Park, particularly at weekend, are seeing large numbers of families visiting, at peak times of the day, between 11am and 2pm. Whilst visitors might live in Broxtowe, some are passing closer parks to their homes, to visit this park specifically, which is causing capacity issues, particularly with parking. Biodiversity Work Provides a Boost for Butterflies in Broxtowe. As part of the winter tree planting programme the gardeners at Broxtowe Borough Council have been busy planting trees along an old hedgerow at Leyton Crescent Recreation Ground in Beeston. The trees include Oak, Field Maple and of particular importance a number of disease resistant Elms. Once a common sight very few Elm trees remain, as through the 1970’s Dutch Elm Disease swept across the United Kingdom, killing an estimate 25 million trees. This was particularly bad news for the White Letter Hairstreak, a butterfly whose caterpillars feed exclusively on Elm and their population now stands at just 3% of what it was before the disease arrived. Since then horticulturalists have looked to find resistant elms to replace those lost and a number of varieties have now been identified. It is hoped that as they grow the trees

will provide a home for this endangered butterfly, whilst helping to capture carbon from the atmosphere and create a habitat for many other species. In autumn the strip of grass along the hedgerow will be planted with native bulbs and wildflowers to further improve habitat for wildlife. The work is part of Broxtowe Borough Council’s Green Futures programme, aiming to reduce carbon and increase biodiversity.Councillor Helen Skinner, Chair of the Climate Change Committee said “Wherever we can we will look to encourage wildlife onto our parks and open spaces, sometimes it only requires small changes to be made to the way we look after things to have a positive impact for wildlife and always without detracting from the excellent facilities and recreation opportunities our sites provide for Borough residents” Photo: Trees being planted at Leyton Crescent Recreation Ground, Beeston.

Good News for Skate Beeston.

participants for earlier projects, currently in storage, could be installed temporarily or more permanently at the identified sites in and around Beeston. Progress can be followed on: www.instagram.com/ skatenottingham

Skate Beeston is a collaborative initiative between Beeston Civic Society, Skate Nottingham and Broxtowe Borough Council. It’s already had significant support from local youth and council leaders, together with publicity in local media and on Notts TV. The overall project is sponsored and part funded by educational charity Ignite! Futures via a grant from UK Research & Innovation (UKRI) The Skate Beeston project envisages young people working with experienced designers, trades people and professionals – from concept and design, through construction to evaluation, technical appraisal and use of the skate features. These would be sited in various locations around Beeston. It has community-wide benefits, inspiring, engaging and giving expression to innate talents – a wide variety of potential career paths creating aspirations for the future.

Broxtowe ‘Skate Hubs’. Recognising the time and cost implications of a full-blown Skate Park the Beeston team have opted for ‘Skate Hubs’. Sites for potential ‘Skate Hubs’ have already been identified by Civic Society Officers in association with project leader Chris Lawton and officers of the borough council. The aim is to develop a pilot scheme at Beeston Field Recreation Ground, off Central Avenue, as the scheme pilot and to roll ’Hubs’ out across the Borough. Take a look at #inspiredbyskatespots to find out more.

The main driver for the project to engage young people in designing and then enjoying spaces for skateboarding and other physical activitiesThe great news for Beeston is Ignite! funding can be ‘carried over’ into the next year. Extending the deadline means this money can be applied to the Beeston project, which is great news.Even although the planned workshops sessions are not now able to take place as part of the Science & Curiosity Festival – virtual sessions are planned. A film is nearing completion, featuring various aspects of Skate Boarding is due for release soon on social media.

Broxtowe Mayor Teams Up With Local Hotel To Provide Extra Food For the Half-Term. Foodbanks in Broxtowe will receive a helping hand just in time for half term, thanks to a partnership between Broxtowe Borough Council and The Nottingham Belfry Hotel.

The Mayor and representatives from the Belfry Hotel and Hope Nottingham as part of the partnership, the Council and the hotel will work with Hope Nottingham and Eastwood Volunteer Bureau Foodbank to provide long-life milk, tinned potatoes, tinned meat, tuna, sardines, mackerels, tinned rice pudding, juice and cordials to foodbanks in the Borough so that families who are struggling can make sure that no children go hungry during the school holidays. Local sponsors who usually support the Charity Ball pledged their support for the initiative, generously donating over £2,000.

64

“My annual Charity Ball was due to be held at The Belfry next month but unfortunately it is not safe for it to go ahead due to the coronavirus restrictions,” said Councillor Janet Patrick, Mayor of Broxtowe. “We spoke to the hotel and decided to come up with an alternative that would really help local families at this difficult time. I have been so heartened to see local businesses and the community come together to help each other. I’m so proud to be involved in this initiative working with the Nottingham Belfry, Hope and Eastwood Volunteer Bureau Foodbank to ensure no-one goes hungry this half-term. I would especially like to thank the Belfry and our generous sponsors Novus, United Living, Go-Daddy, Gillots and Fernwood Housing Group for their incredibly kind donations.” Nigel Adams of Hope said: “We are delighted to see the Mayor of Broxtowe working together with the Belfry Hotel with this wonderful donation of food to support our foodbanks. In these challenging times it’s so encouraging to see so many people working together to help those in need.” Local foodbanks are available to help anyone who is struggling to buy food at any time. Anyone who is struggling for whatever reason should in the first instance contact Nottinghamshire County Council on 0300 500 80 80 where they will be assessed and appropriate advice given to deal with their immediate need. For longer term advice around debt, benefits and housing you should contact the Citizen’s Advice Bureau on 0800 144 8848. For more information, contact the Civic Officer on 0115 917 3210 or email: civic@broxtowe.gov.uk

Message from Councillor John McGrath

Hi everyone, Just a few lines about one or two things, first it was sad to see a truly fantastic gentleman pass away. A national hero who’s spirit and endeavour helped many through this horrible time. His attitude and his humbleness was a credit to all generations. His efforts, and the people who donated , was an honour to our nation. God rest Captain Sir Tom Moore. I hope the government, (as I’ve said before), honour the people he did it for, and perhaps have a national day in his honour and for the people who have sadly died from this disease. I hope you have all seen the plans for the possible £25 million pound investment in our town. This is a great opportunity for us. It will not suit everyone but I am confident if we receive the money, thousands of people for generations will come visit and see what a great town we have. We hope to start a market day soon, we all know what’s missing, butchers, fruit and veg, clothes and craft stalls. I’m sure again we have our ideas. If you know anyone interested, please ring myself or Claire Storey at Broxtowe Borough Council. After the tragic incident over Christmas, police, community leaders, councillors and many others have been looking to find solutions for our town. Better lighting and CCTV on our parks, park-keepers,

more police patrols, youth engagement officers, a job’s club and many other things to help our youth to help themselves to find a better life. I will assure you , that we will do our upmost to help to find a plan to get the future of our town on the right path. We have received some money from the Nottingham County Council to give our town a bit of a spring clean. I have asked the council to look at the two billboards on Bessell Lane. Finally, I have spoken to our MP, regarding a vaccine centre around our area to support the great effort that the government is doing. My daughter and her friend are volunteers at the Derby Arena, and they say it’s great to see people smiling again when they arrive to get vaccinated. I would also like to give a huge thank you for the free food that local businesses drop off. Our local surgeries are all now getting involved, it’s a huge logistical and scientific challenge at least, I pray that this will continue. Just a line to thank all the groups for all the good work they are doing, (you know who you are), and also to the army at Chilwell who supplied us with duvets and food, a huge thanks to Elaine Shiels, great effort. Yours, Councillor John McGath (Maggie)
