HS21+ classes: If you’re at least 21 years old and have earned high school credits, but have not yet earned your high school diploma or equivalency, then this competency-based diploma program may be the perfect fit for you. Adult Basic Education (ABE) and General Education Development (GED) preparation classes help those who may or may not have a high school diploma improve mathematics, reading and writing skills. ABE provides you with a foundation so you can beneﬁt from technical education and gain job-speciﬁc skills. English as a Second Language (ESL) classes help adults learn to use the English language in their education, work and daily activities. Bates offers classes at our campuses and several offcampus locations. General education and academic transfer courses are offered at all three of our campuses, with many also available online. High School Diploma & Career Training Pathway, day, all campuses In this pathway, students will complete all state high school graduation requirements, as well as the college requirements for industry certification in their chosen program. Afternoon Technical High School Pathway, South Campus Students take more general education graduation requirements to help make up for missing credits and take some career training classes in the early evening. While it is possible to attain a high school diploma in this pathway, the goal is to transition students into a diploma and career training pathway. NEW!! Associate’s Degree and High School Diploma pathway, day, all campuses Students only take college classes that pertain to the desired associate degree. Upon completion of the degree, students may automatically be issued a high school diploma.

Not just babysitting, Early Childhood Education graduate provides nurturing learning environment

rowing up with nearly 30 cousins, Eloisa Yanez-Rogers recalls playing teacher and pretending her youngest relatives were her students. She organized crafts, taught them how to spell their names, and helped them learn the alphabet. A native of Santiago, Chile, Eloisa says those memories guided her to the field of early childhood education. She met her husband Alex while visiting an uncle in Tacoma in 2011. The couple soon married and Eloisa moved to Tacoma in 2013, where she explored her educational options. She was working toward her initial certificate in early childhood education at another college when Bates Technical College hired her as a teacher assistant in their Early Learning Center. In 2015, she enrolled in the Early Childhood Education program, while continuing to work. “The hands-on focus of the program really helped me apply the concepts that I learned in class,” says Eloisa. “For instance, instead of just talking about classroom environment, we actually went to child care classrooms, designed learning stations and organized the environment. The teacher tailored the program to the students’ needs, and she constantly encouraged and helped me work toward my educational goals,” says Eloisa, who earned an initial certificate in 2014 and an infant and toddler specialization in 2016. Her husband Alex, a former landscaper and warehouse worker, also discovered opportunity at Bates. In 2017, he enrolled in the college’s Biomedical Service Technician: Clinical Engineering program to learn how to repair and maintain sophisticated healthcare equipment. Eloisa took a break from her studies when she gave birth to their son in June 2017. “I wanted to focus on work so I could support my family financially, and help Alex focus on his program, without him having to think about working many hours. Once he graduates, I will go back and complete my last two quarters to earn my Associate in Applied Science degree. My hope is to eventually earn a Bachelor’s Degree,” she notes. As an Early Head Start Specialist, Eloisa works with children from one month to five years old. She serves as a co-teacher, where she promotes school readiness and supports the comprehensive development of children. “My goal is to work with children in a highpoverty setting in our community, because I would like to give back and do as much as I can to help them succeed,” says Eloisa, who plans to work in family support. “Sometimes, people see child care as babysitting, but what they’re missing is how important our role is in the development of children. I want to provide children with a safe and nurturing learning environment that helps them feel worthwhile, capable and loved,” she smiles. 

SPOTLIGHT ON EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION PROGRAM Early Childhood Education (ECE) instructor Lisa Webb has been working in the early learning field for more than 30 years. Her educational journey began as a family childcare provider years ago at Bates, where she also earned an associate degree in child development. “My love for learning continued, and after earning a master’s degree, I found myself back where it all began - Bates Technical College teaching students the importance of implementing and advocating quality early learning experiences,” says Lisa. 1. DESCRIBE THE ECE PROGRAM. Our program models its objectives: being responsive to students and community, upholding ethical and value-based models, communication and collaboration with students. 2. WHAT KINDS OF CERTIFICATES AND DEGREES CAN STUDENTS EARN? We offer an Associate in Applied Science and an Associate in Applied Science-Transfer degree. You can also earn the following certificates: one-year certificate; certificate of specialization in infant/ toddler care; school age care; and family child care. 3. HOW DOES THE FIRST YEAR DIFFER FROM THE SECOND YEAR? During the first year, we set the foundation for understanding children’s developmental stages and factors that affect children and their families, including biological, environmental, cultural, social and economic. Your second year is fully online and provides opportunities for you to implement your learning through hands-on experiences within our community, including Bates’ child care centers.
