HIGH SCHOOL, ADULT BASIC EDUCATION AND GENERAL EDUCATION

COLLEGE ACADEMIC TRANSFER COURSEWORK, ABE AND HIGH SCHOOL COMPLETION College academic transfer and general education courses: Offered at all three of our campuses, with many courses also available online. Transfer &100 and &200 level, and 90 and 100 level gen-ed courses in math, English, communication, and other areas meet Bates’ AAS and AS-T degree, or certificate requirements. Academic coursework complements your industry-specific skills training. In addition, Bates academic transfer faculty offer the “WA45” coursework and the 60 credits of academic transfer coursework required for LPN students. Visit www.bates.ctc.edu/GeneralEd to learn more. Adult High School Diploma Program: Adults 18 years and older who have not yet earned their diploma find a great fit with Bates’ competency-based high school diploma program. We evaluate your high school credits, your work, military or life experiences to design a completion pathway unique to you. Adult High School encourages students to transition into college and career programs that lead to living-wage careers. Many young adults aged 18-20 are eligible for our Technical High School program which directly enrolls students into college degree programs. Adult Basic Education (ABE) math, reading, and writing skill development courses: Our Adult Basic Education (ABE) 80-level courses in mathematics develop a solid foundation of skills for students to successfully transition to 90-level algebra coursework. Our ABE courses in English provide a similar skill foundation for students to successfully transition to 90-level reading, writing and English coursework. ABE and Adult HS courses come at the low cost of only $25.00 per quarter. ABE courses may be combined or taken concurrently with Adult High School completion coursework, and count as credit towards the Adult High School diploma. Bates career-training college students may also enroll in ABE courses to brush up on skills prior to enrolling in college general education coursework.

TECHNICAL HIGH SCHOOL PATHWAYS What if you could earn your high school diploma and an associate degree in a world-class career training program at the same time, tuition free? Technical High School at Bates offers three unique pathways for high school-age students, age 16-21. Visit www.bates.ctc.edu/highschool to learn more. High School Diploma & Career Training Pathway, day, all campuses In this pathway, students will complete all state high school graduation requirements, as well as the college requirements for industry certification in their chosen program. In some programs, students have the opportunity to earn over 2,000 apprenticeable hours towards journeyman. Afternoon Technical High School Pathway, South Campus Students take more general education graduation requirements to help make up for missing credits and take some career training classes in the early evening. While it is possible to attain a high school diploma in this pathway, the goal is to transition students into a diploma and career training pathway. Associate’s Degree and High School Diploma Pathway, day, all campuses Students only take college classes that pertain to the desired associate degree. Upon completion of the degree, students may automatically be issued a high school diploma. Steps to Enroll: 1. Attend a High School Orientation. 2. The patients in those practices and hospitals depend not only on the expertise of doctors and nurses, but also on the proper functioning of sophisticated biomedical equipment which now includes medical simulation devices.

fter she dropped out of her Tacoma high school during senior year, April Green went to work as an office assistant. She left school because of a change in her family situation, but it was another change that steered her towards earning her high school diploma and pursuing higher education 15 years later.

In December 2016, soon after the birth of her son, April was laid off from her medical billing job. Her first step was to visit WorkSource for a re-employment interview. Staff there helped her create a plan of action, and referred April to Bates Technical College, where she met with Lynn Neal, a faculty member at the High School 21+ program at the college. A unique competency-based program, HS21+ helps adults 21 years and older earn their high school diploma.

April adds that before enrolling in Bates, she was nervous about returning to school. “For the longest time, I told myself I wouldn’t be able to do it, but losing my job, getting connected with WorkSource, OF HER FIVE unemployment and the HS21+ program was the SIBLINGS, NOTES perfect push,” she recalls. “Before our meeting, I knew I didn’t want to pursue a GED. Lynn was comforting and reassuring. I did not feel stressed or intimidated at all with how the structure of the program was set. After speaking with her and learning more about the program, I knew I could succeed,” says April, who started taking classes spring 2017. An Adult Basic Education instructor, Lynn recalls April as

The program turns life experience into high school credits, and since April needed just a few to obtain her diploma, it wasn’t long before she neared completion.

“The HS21+ program was perfect for my situation. I earned a math credit through testing, took history and science classes, and through a combination of work and life credits, I was finally able to earn my diploma,” April says. “It was like the stars aligned for me. My son was my motivation to start school. I was on unemployment and was able to obtain a Worker Retraining grant from Bates, which allowed me some financial wiggle room. My husband was supportive of me. He told me for years that I could return to school, earn my diploma, and pursue a

“What pointed me to AMA were the marketable skills I’d learn. I wouldn’t bounce from job to job because I would have a degree in an in-demand health-related field. I’d also have a direct and clear career path. The medical field isn’t going anywhere, so I won’t be affected by the economy,” says April. April’s advisors and instructor helped her make the transition from HS21+ graduate to college student seamless. “Everyone who helped me was dedicated to my success. This program has a high level of structure, and I thrive in that kind of environment, so this was the ideal choice,” says April, now in her third quarter. Of her five siblings, notes April, only one has a college degree, so for her, pursuing higher education means security and achievement. Says April, “I had a turbulent upbringing; the stars aligned at the right time and I earned my diploma, and now I’m halfway through my Associate’s Degree. This is more than securing a promising career. It’s a victory.” 

Accreditation Bates Technical College is regionally accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities, an institutional accrediting body recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation and the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Education. After the first day of class, Bates grants refunds as follows: • From the 1st to the 5th calendar day - 80% • From the 6th day to the 15th calendar day - 40% • After the 15th calendar day, there is no refund The tuition refund policy applies to all students in state-supported programs. It is the student’s responsibility to complete a withdrawal form and submit it to the registration office. The date the withdrawal is received will be used for calculating refunds. Self-Support Courses • The college cancels the class - 100% • Withdrawal on or before one business day prior to 1st class - 100% • Student registers but doesn’t attend - None Limitation of Liability The college’s total liability for claims arising from a contractual relationship with the student in any way related to classes or programs shall be limited to the tuition and expenses paid by the student to the college for those classes or programs. In no event shall the college be liable for any special, indirect, incidental, or consequential damages, including but not limited to, loss of earnings or profits. State Support for Education The average cost to educate a resident full-time community or technical college student for the 2017-18 academic year is $8,063. Students pay an average of $3,123 in tuition toward this cost. The remaining $4,940 is an “opportunity pathway” provided by the State and is funded by state taxes and other sources.
