Congratulations to Terry Blakeman, Fadra Birdsell and Kelly Sutphin-Gutmann on your recent elections and to Phyllis Sutphin, Greg Pettit and Dave Troxell on your appointed positions. Thank you to those that serve our community in big and small ways. The annual appropriation ordinance is available for inspection at the Municipal Building. PDC Area Disposal has a program to aid in recycling efforts. The service would be curbside at residences. There is an additional fee of $2.00 a month that would be added to trash pick-up bills. Residents that sign up for recycling would have a recycling can at their home and it would be emptied twice a month. Before making this decision, the Village Trustees would like feedback from residents. Please contact any of the Trustees listed below or call the Village office with your feelings on this matter. Thank you to Bob and Phyllis Sutphin for their work on the entrance signs to the Village. If you are in possession of a stray dog, please call the county sheriff’s office (217/452-7718) and ask them to contact Jim Birdsell. If you see a street light out, call the Village office (217/476-3317) and we will contact Ameren CIPS for repair.

The 4th of July will soon be here and the Pleasant Plains Community Club is gearing up for another Snap, Crackle, Pop fireworks extravaganza. From 1776 until the present day, July 4th has been celebrated as the birth of American independence from Great Britain with typical festivities ranging from fireworks, parades and concerts to more casual family gatherings and barbecues. We should all celebrate the freedoms America offers us and never take them for granted. Mark the 4th of July on your calendar and come view the beautiful display to celebrate America’s birthday. Bring lawn chairs to the Pleasant Plains High School and settled in for a wonderful evening lighting up the sky with beautiful colors beginning at dusk. There will be food and drink beginning at 5:30 pm. Ribeyes and hot dogs. Drinks and etc. If you would like to help defray the cost of this yearly celebration, please send any amount of monetary donation to Pleasant Plains Community Club, PO Box 385, Pleasant Plains, Il. 62677. Church Attendance by Edward J. Moretto, Minister, Berea Christian Church Is church attendance up or down? Google that question and you'll find over 15,000,000 "hits" on the subject. (At least I did.) Now stop for just a minute or two and let me indulge in what some might call a tangent. In last month's issue of the SCOOP, John Sheppard's very timely article entitled "Why Church?," asked the question "If Jesus was the guest speaker at Church this weekend, would we attend?" That's very interesting, and John is correct when he calls our attention to the fact that Jesus is always there when we are. He cites the Scripture passage from Matthew 18:20. "For where two or three have gathered together in My name, I am there in their midst." (NASB) Having been offered this segue, I cannot turn it down. So, allow me first to offer my answer to John's question. NO! In His day Jesus preached in the villages, on the hillsides of Galilee and Judea, and in their synagogues. Out of curiosity and in anticipation of the expected Messiah, people availed themselves of the opportunity to hear any speaker who it appeared could offer them hope of deliverance from the Roman yoke. Some thought Jesus was that military leader. And, after He had fed the five thousand and then the four thousand, they came to Him in droves. Why? Their expectations were high but listen to Jesus' words to them in John 6:26. "Truly, truly I say to you, you seek Me not because you saw signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled." (NASB) He tells them not to seek the physical bread, but to strive for the spiritual. Later, in John 6:48, Jesus will tell them, "I am the bread of life." At the end of this discourse (called "the bread of life discourse"), John tells us, "As a result of this many of His disciples withdrew and were not walking with Him anymore." (John 6:66, NASB) And so it is today, many who called themselves His disciples (students, learners), searching for "what's in it for me," have left the assembly of Christians which we call "church," and are looking for fulfillment elsewhere. It comes as no surprise, to the one courageous enough to admit the obvious, that we are a society of "takers" instead of "givers." Maybe we always have been. (See John 6:26 again.) As a result, society follows the leader, at all political and social levels, who promises something tangible for nothing. How sad that they have either never heard the words of Paul in Ephesians 2:8-9, or have simply ignored them. (Look this one up. It'll stay with you longer.) Then there's another segue from Jesus in Matthew 24:12 (NASB): "Because lawlessness is increased, the love of many will grow cold." Thanks for the question, John.
