Congratulations to Nic Sinclair for being selected Student of the Month for April at A-C Central High School. Mr. Sinclair is the son of Sam and Liz Sinclair of Ashland.

We hope you can attend and support these upcoming summer events.

Nic is a leader both in and out of the classroom as evidenced by his involvement in various school activities. He is a member of the Honor Roll, National Honor Society, Foreign Language Club, Scholastic Bowl and Spring Musical. He also was a member of the Golf and Basketball teams that finished 4th in the State Tournaments. He was voted to the Basketball AllTournament Teams at Athens, Williamsville and Winchester and the Scholastic Bowl All-Tournament team at the PORTA Invite. Nic was named the Jacksonville Rotary Scholar Athlete for A-C Central.

Away from school Nic was a Boy’s State Attendee and will be a volunteer Camp Counselor at Boy’s State this summer. Mr. Sinclair plans on attending Lincoln Land Community College where he received the Foundation Scholarship and was accepted into the Honors Program. He plans on getting his Associate’s Degree at LLCC while playing Basketball for the Loggers, then transferring to a major university to attain a Bachelor’s degree in Actuarial Science. Congratulations to Nic Sinclair on this significant honor!

The A-C Central Junior High Band presented its Spring Concert on Tuesday 5/13/2014 in the gym in Ashland. The band performed several selections for a full house. Songs performed were FW Meachams AMERICAN PATROL, Scott Watsons Heavy Metal and Alleluia by Elliot Del Borgo. The end of the year awards were presented also. Those awards include: solo ensemble ribbons, all-district certificates and the IESA Best of the Day award. The Band Director award was also presented to the outstanding musicians in the band. The A-C Central High School Band presented its Spring Concert on May 14 @ 7 PM in the gym in Ashland IL. The band performed a wide variance of music for a full house. Songse performed were: Rough Riders by Karl L King, Selections from FROZEN arr. by Johnny Vinson, Black is the Color‌arr. by Robert Sheldon, a percussion ensemble titled Stinkin’ Garbage by Ed Arganzanio and Trail of Tears by James Barnes. The annual awards were presented at this concert also. Winners of the John Philip Sousa Award were Ty Kesselring and Allyson Quick. Winner of the Arion Award was Hoaby Hoagland and the Rookie of the Year went to Emily Koch. Ty Kesselring named Sons of the American Revolution Citizenship Award Winner Congratulations to Ty Kesselring for being selected the Sons of the American Revolution Citizenship Award Winner at A-C Central High School. Mr. Kesselring is the son of Jackie and Brett Kesselring of Ashland. Ty is a leader both in and out of the classroom as evidenced by his involvement in various school activities. He is a member of the Honor Roll, is President of the Marching Band, a member of Natural Helpers, STAR (Treasurer) and Student Council. He has been a cast member of the Fall Play and Spring Musical each year and has been selected to the IMEA All-District Band for 2012 and 2013 as well as the IMEA All-State Band in 2013. The Sons of the American Revolution Award recognizes students based on academic success, citizenship and teacher recommendation. Ty was presented with the certificate for this award at the A-C Central Academic Awards ceremony May 6th, 2014. Congratulations to Ty Kesselring on this significant honor!

David G. Durako, 84, of Springfield, died at 3:05 p.m. on Saturday, April 26, 2014 at St. John's Hospice. David was born July 27, 1929 in Chicago, the son of George and Lena Boroweic Durako. He married Patricia M. Hypke on September 10, 1949 at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Springfield. David was a graduate of Cathedral Boys High School and received his bachelor of science in education from Illinois State Normal University. He went on to receive his master of science in education from Western Illinois University. He proudly served his country in the Illinois National Guard in the 44th Infantry Division Band. David was a former member of the Knights of Columbus 364, as well as the Springfield Municipal Band. David was a life-long educator and taught grade school and high school band at both Ashland Schools and Pleasant Plains Schools, and was the grade school principal at both. He is fondly remembered as "Mr. D" to all of his students. He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Patricia Durako of Springfield; four sons, D. Marc (wife, Debby) Durako of Pleasant Plains, Philip (wife, Colleen) Durako of Springfield, Douglas (wife, Sally) Durako of Bloomington, and Paul (wife, Debbie) Durako of Downs; seven grandchildren, Justin (wife, Amy) Durako, Molly (husband, Ed) Kowynia, Jess (wife, Stacy) Durako, Nathan (wife, Jenna) Durako, Evan (wife, Mindy) Durako, Kelsey Durako, and Emily Durako; seven greatgrandchildren, Carter and Drake Durako, Elly and Vivien Kowynia, Lauren and George Durako, and Hank Durako; one brother, Daniel Durako of Oriental, NC; three nephews; and several cousins. Cremation was accorded by Butler Cremation Tribute Center prior to ceremonies. Funeral Mass: 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 1, 2014 at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, 2000 Sangamon Ave., Springfield, with Rev. Msgr. David S. Lantz celebrant. Private family burial will be held.. RUTH ELIZABETH FULK 1921—2014 Ruth Elizabeth Fulk, 92, of Ashland passed away Friday afternoon, May 2, 2014 at Walker Nursing Home in Virginia. She was born December 22, 1921 in Olney the daughter of Frank and Nora Curtis Shultz. She is survived by one daughter, Glenda (husband, Neal) Kesselring of Ashland; grandsons, Kevin (wife, Beth) Kesselring of Pleasant Plains and Scott Whittington of Springfield; one great-granddaughter, Baylee Kesselring; one sister, Helen Beam of Virginia; special niece, Marla (husband, Neil) Boxell of Texas and several other nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; granddaughter, Kendra Whittington and two brothers, Bud and Ray Shultz. Mrs. Fulk retired from Memorial Medical Center in Springfield in 1989 after 21 years of service as a Technician in the Surgery Department. A funeral service was held at 2 p.m. on Monday, May 5, 2014 at Williamson Funeral Home in Jacksonville with burial at Ashland Cemetery. The family met friends from 12-2 on Monday at the funeral home. Janet Ruth Jurgens, 84, died on Sunday, May 4, 2014 at her home. She was born September 15, 1929 in Jacksonville, Illinois to William and Mary Ruth Fuller Townslay. She married Walter Jurgens on August 9, 1953 in Annie Merner Chapel on the Campus of MacMurray College in Jacksonville, Illinois. He survives. Also surviving are her daughters, Joyce Te Ronde (Robert) of Petersburg, Illinois and Linda Jurgens of Springfield, Illinois and her son Jeffrey Jurgens of rural Ashland, Illinois. She has two sisters Betty Willard of Edwardsville, Illinois and Carol Morey (Lloyd) of St. Peters, Missouri and one brother, William Townslay (Janet) of Wentzville, Missouri. In addition several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and greatnephews survive. She was preceded in death by her parents and several aunts and uncles. Janet was an educator who began her teaching career in the Chapin, Illinois school district. She continued to teach in the Ashland, Illinois and A-C Central School Districts for 36 years. She thoroughly enjoyed her retirement home on Lake Petersburg. In addition to playing golf following her teaching career, she was an avid bridge and pinochle player Visitation was held at Zion Lutheran Church in Pleasant Plains, Illinois Janet’s church home, on Wednesday May 7, 2014 from 4:00p.m. to 7:00p.m. Funeral services was held the following day also at Zion Lutheran Church in Pleasant Plains, Illinois on Thursday May 8, 2014 at 11:00a.m. with a one hour visitation prior to services. The family would like to thank Memorial Hospice for the kind and caring services she received. Memorials may be made to: Zion Lutheran Church, Pleasant Plains, Illinois or Memorial Home Hospice.
