He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Patty Heather and Judy Heather; and a brother in infancy, Charles Heather. Bob was a 1963 graduate of Ashland High School. He was currently employed with the Teachers Retirement System where he has served on their staff for 15 years. Bob was also a talented printer having formerly worked for Rudin Printing and The Printing Center, both of Springfield. In his spare time, he owned and operated Printer’s Ink of Ashland where he edited and published “The Ashland Scoop”. He was a member of the Ashland United Methodist Church and was a former member of the Ashland Jaycees. Funeral services were held 10:00 am Saturday at the Ashland United Methodist Church in Ashland with burial at Ashland Cemetery. The family met friends at the church from 5:00 to 7:30 pm Friday. Memorial gifts are suggested to Ashland United Methodist Church or Ashland Volunteer Fire Dept. The Buchanan & Cody Funeral Home in Ashland was in charge of the arrangements. Larry A. Million Born: July 03, 1945 Died: September 14, 2014 Larry A. Million, 69, of Ashland, IL died Sunday, September 14, 2014 at his residence. He was born July 3, 1945 in Morgan County, the son of Harold and Helen Rockstad Million. He married Sharlie McGee on May 20, 1966 in Roodhouse and she survives. He is also survived by a son, Rick Million (wife, Regina) of Virginia; a daughter, Lisa Ratliff of Ashland; four grandchildren, Joseph Hayden, Marissa Johnson, Shaunn Ratliff, and Erica Million; four great grandchildren, Charlee, Hanna, Bentley, & Jaxstin; three brothers, Ernie Million (wife, Alvina) of White Hall, Lawrence Million of Roodhouse, and Andy Million (wife, Sandy) of Jacksonville; three sisters, Barbara Wallbaum of Murrayville, Betty Cardwell (husband, Sonny) of Roodhouse, and Joyce Coplea (husband, Bob) of Springfield; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Charles, Roger and Duwayne Million. Mr. Million was a farm hand for the John Cosner Farms for 11 years prior to joining Philadelphia Farmers Elevator for several years. He was retired after several years with Excel in Beardstown. He enjoyed hunting and fishing in his spare time. Graveside funeral services will be held 3:00 pm Wednesday at Ashland Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Blessings in a backpack is a results-orientated program, designed to feed elementary school children whose families qualify for the federal Free and Reduced Price Meal program, and have little or no food on the weekends. Better test scores, improved reading skills, positive behavior, improved health and increased attendance have all been attributed to the success of this program. $80 feeds an American school child in the program for an entire 38 week school year. A passionate volunteer elects to start the Blessings in a Backpack program in a local school. S/he fundraises to support the number of children in the program and partners with a near by grocery. Blessings in a Backpack donates the backpacks for the program, so 100% of the money raised by the program coordinator goes directly to food purchased for the backpacks. Every Friday, students receive their backpacks with staples that require little to no preparation. They return with their backpacks on Monday ready to learn. Blessings in a Backpack experienced explosive growth during 2012. As of September 1, 2012, we are feeding nearly 62,000 children throughout the United States and in three countries. The organization could not have achieved this milestone without our tireless volunteers, dedicated school personnel, or valued public, corporate, athletic, and celebrity sponsors. We hope that we can continue to grow into 2013 and beyond. Together, we are Feeding the Future of America, one school at a time. PRAIRIE TALES Prairie Skies Public Library is planning to print a newsletter called “PRAIRIE TALES” that will be information of Library news from both locations of Ashland and Pleasant Plains. If you are one whom doesn’t have a computer, we will be putting printed pages around the two communities for you. We add new reading materials on a monthly basis, so those items will be listed. The PORTA/A-C Lady Jays Volleyball Team won the Championship of the North Fulton Tournament on Saturday. Attached is a picture of the team and a picture of the 2 ladies that made All Tournament Team. The weekend continued with a performance at the Petersburg Harvest Festival on Saturday 9/20. This non competition paraded hosted the hometown favorite PORTA, and A-C Central, Jacksonville & Havana. A-C Central’s Beginning of the Year Business…. September 5, 2014 NEW STAFF… Allow me to introduce myself! My name is Kristy Franzoni, and I am the new school counselor at A-C Central CUSD #262. I am starting my 5th year as a counselor in a school setting. Prior to working in a school, I worked as a mental health counselor at Methodist Medical Center for a total of 6 years. I cannot even put into words how excited I am to be a part of the A-C family and the Ashland community! I am surrounded by supportive and appreciative board members and administration, teachers and staff who will go above and beyond to help me out, and students who are polite and respectful. I have been married to my husband, Brad Eilers, for 14 years, and we have 4 children: Kyson-13, Jaelyn-12, Landon-8, Mariah-6. On our spare time we like boating in the summer and racing dirt bikes. We have a dirt bike track and trails that we operate January through September called Midwest Moto Cross. I have been given an opportunity to work here in the district and didn’t want to pass it up. I love this school and c ommunity and am so excited to be working here with the faculty, students, and the cheer squad. I am looking forward to great year! In addition to my responsibilities here at A/C I am starting my second year as the Pastor of New Beginnings Christian Fellowship and my 25th year of ministry. My wife Doris is a 1 on 1 aide here at A/C. We have been married for 25 years. We have 4 children, three girls and one boy. Yes, he is the youngest. We also have 2 grandchildren. I like to fish, play softball and any other outdoor activity. I am an avid Chicago Sports Fan – Bears, Black Hawks, and Cubs. I am glad to be a part of the A/C Central family. My name is Lindsey Emmons, and this will be my first year managing a classroom of my very own. I will also be coaching the 5th & 6th grade girls basketball team this year. I graduated from SIUE in 2012 and decided to sub in Havana(where I am from) District #126 while I began raising my daughter, Blakelynn, who just turned 1. I am an avid outdoorswoman :). I love to fish, hunt, run, and cook. I also enjoy DIY projects, and spending a significant amount of my free time with my family. WHAT’S NEW IN THE CLASSROOMS… We are proud to announce that we now have LCD projectors in EVERY classroom!! What are LCD projectors you ask? Our new Casio projectors are a great addition to our classrooms. These projectors are referred to as a DLP(digital light processing) projector type. According to Casio, "By combining a laser, a fluorescent element and an LED Casio has created an original mercury-free hybrid light source capable of generating high brightness.". This new DLP type of projector lasts ten tim es longer than a traditional projector type. Plus it never requires lamp replacements or a cooling down period for the light source. By providing a lamp free solution Casio saves our district money, time, and helps to protect the environment. All of those things are features we try to look for in all the products we choose. -Brendon DeJaynes

THIS NEXT STEP IN TECHNOLOGY IS BIG FOR US! HERE IS WHAT SOME OF OUR TEACHERS ARE SAYING ABOUT THEM…. For the first time, I have an LCD projector in the science lab!!!! I am very excited about this!!! This will allow me to show the lab procedure as I am explaining the procedure to the students. We can discuss the lab questions. I have a microscope that I can hook up to my computer and then display the object being viewed on the screen. This allows me to show the students what they should be viewing. -Mrs. Dena Leinberger At the July board meeting, I spoke up in favor of purchasing these projectors because all the core middle school teachers had some sort of smart board in their classrooms but fifth grade had nothing. When it passed, I was so excited and I already had an idea of how to use it right it away. That initial idea has blossomed into others and I have been able to enhance my teaching so much. I have shown power points and videos, have projected assignments so that I can exemplify a lesson, and have been able to explain how to navigate a new website as well. Next week, I am looking forward to sharing an interactive timeline of 9/11 that should stimulate a discussion and writing assignment on the topic of Patriot Day. Frye Pottery, Pam and Tim Frye, (217) 868-5583 LOCAL CHEERLEADER/DANCER TO PERFORM IN THE PHILADELPHIA THANKSGIVING DAY PARADE Abigail Vandenbergh from A-C Central Jr High in Ashland, IL is one of over 500 junior high and high school cheerleaders and dancers from across the U.S. who will perform in the 92st Annual Philadelphia Thanksgiving Day Parade, the oldest Thanksgiving Day parade in the nation.

The individuals invited to perform in the parade are cheerleading and dance All Americans selected from Varsity camps around the country, including camps organized by Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA), Universal Dance Association (UDA), National Cheerleaders Association (NCA) and National Dance Alliance (NDA). All Americans will be in Philadelphia from November 20 through the 23rd, practicing their routine and visiting Philadelphia landmarks. All Americans are selected via tryout based on either superior cheerleading or dance skills. Only the top 12% of the cheerleaders and dancers who attend Varsity camps earn the chance to march in a holiday spectacular of this caliber. Abigail Vandenbergh, daughter of Bob and Beth Vandenbergh, will perform with the AllAmerican group in the annual Thanksgiving Day festivities through the heart of historic Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The event is televised in the Philadelphia area and syndicated throughout the United States. On Saturday, October 18th, the A-C Boosters will be hosting a brown bag lunch for $5.00. It will include a pork chop sandwich, chips and a soda. We will be located at the Ashland Farmer's Elevator. This will begin at 11:00 a.m.
* 28 years of experience *proud life-long resident of Cass County Fond Farewell In 1978 the Ashland United Women decided they’d like to serve the senior citizens of Ashland community a Thanksgiving dinner – only with roast beef and all the trimmings. So the Thursday before Thanksgiving was the date we chose. In 1982 we asked the Catholic’s if we could use their hall as it has no steps. The graciously let us use their hall and we thank them. The Cass County Health Department always came and took blood pressures and sometimes gave flu shots and we thank them. After 36 years, it was seniors serving seniors and all good things come to an end. Thanks for the memories! Ashland United Methodist Women
