Organization Statement Blessings in a backpack is a results-orientated program, designed to feed elementary school children whose families qualify for the federal Free and Reduced Price Meal program, and have little or no food on the weekends. Better test scores, improved reading skills, positive behavior, improved health and increased attendance have all been attributed to the success of this program. $80 feeds an American school child in the program for an entire 38 week school year. A passionate volunteer elects to start the Blessings in a Backpack program in a local school. S/he fundraises to support the number of children in the program and partners with a near by grocery. Blessings in a Backpack donates the backpacks for the program, so 100% of the money raised by the program coordinator goes directly to food purchased for the backpacks. Every Friday, students receive their backpacks with staples that require little to no preparation. They return with their backpacks on Monday ready to learn. Blessings in a Backpack experienced explosive growth during 2012. As of September 1, 2012, we are feeding nearly 62,000 children throughout the United States and in three countries. The organization could not have achieved this milestone without our tireless volunteers, dedicated school personnel, or valued public, corporate, athletic, and celebrity sponsors. We hope that we can continue to grow into 2013 and beyond. Together, we are Feeding the Future of America, one school at a time. Opal Ilene Blakeman, 85, of Springfield, formerly of Ashland, died Sunday, June 8, 2014 at St. John’s Hospital. She was born on April 6, 1929, the daughter of Charles and Emma Dell (Gray) McCoy Sr. Opal married Walter Blakeman in Carthage on November 5, 1962. He preceded her in death June 6, 2012. Opal is survived by her son, Carl Thomas (Diana Rowden Jr. of Springfield; daughters, Bonnie (Tom) Sonneborn of Palmyra, Debbie (companion, Jesse Ellison) Hudgens of Springfield, and Vicky Edwards of Springfield; stepsons, Rick (Barbara) Blakeman, Terry (Karen) Blakeman, and Greg Blakeman of Ashland and Gary (Diana) Blakeman of Missouri; and stepdaughter, Dottie (Larry) Crews of New Berlin.

During retirement Bud plans to slow down but not entirely. He will be switching hats back to where he started his career focus prior to working at Cass Telephone Company. He plans to get his hands dirty in the mechanical repair business. “I will be helping my son-in-law open a Husqvarna Dealership in Jacksonville. Once duck season starts, I will be there every day,” says Bud. A retirement celebration was recently held in honor of Bud’s commitment to the company. The event was camouflage themed in recognition of one of Bud’s passions, duck hunting. Employees and retirees gathered to show their support and appreciation for Bud and a great time was had by all!

TO THE CITIZENS OF ASHLAND My wife and I moved from this community on June 11th. It is our desire to thank the citizens of Ashland for their kindness, help in times need, caring and love, not only for us but also for our children. We moved here from the Mattoon-Charleston area in August of 1958. I had graduated in May of 1958 upon my return from service and Kaye graduated in August of 1958. We moved to Ashland shortly after our graduation. We were married in December in 1957 so almost all of our married life has been in this community. I was to teach in Petersburg and Kaye was to teach in Ashland. We had one vehicle, a 1950 Packard, which used more oil than gas. We discovered Ashland to be a warm, inviting, and receptive community and it did not take us long to discover the benefits that were offered in a small school. We did not have two nickels together that we could rub against each other and one must eat in order to survive. We made a trip to Jones Brothers Grocery Store to inquire about the possibility of charging our groceries until we could receive a paycheck from our school districts. The idea of a credit card had not been conceived at that date. Buzz, Lucielle, and Russ Jones were kind enough to let us do that and if my memory serves me correctly we did that for several month paying it off a little at a time until we could catch up. Our next trip was to Bob Douglass’s Mobile Station located where Tom Lewis’s coffee shop is now. Bob was quite willing to let us charge our gas and since the car burned oil faster than gas we used the oil that had come out of other vehicles after they had been services. I point these two things out to show what kind of a community Ashland is. Kaye resigned in 1960 and I move my teaching from Petersburg to Ashland-Pleasant Plains. During those early years we raised three children, all schooled in the Ashland Public school system and as they matured they participated in all of the extra-curricular activities the school provided. In 1968, both of the Ashland and Pleasant Plains School Boards wanted to demote me to the job of Principal. Not wanting to move, I selected the demotion in Ashland. The following years were fruitful and the children grew up, graduated from college, and moved away. We felt fortunate that we lived here in this sheltered spot. The years were good to us and having the friendship of Harold Showalter, Superintendent and Michael Donnan, Grade School Principal for all those years made the job much easier than it might have been. In December of 1996, five years after I had retired and gone on the road driving a tour bus, Kaye had a serious accident and was in the hospital for a good length of time. When she came home, the community and the members of the Ashland United Methodist Church poured out their love on our doorstep. For that we have been eternally grateful. Then in September of 1998, our daughter, Cheri passed away after suffering a stroke. Again the community of Ashland was there for us. We left with much sadness, yet with a great deal of anticipation of the new adventures we will face moving in a different community, but closer to some family thankful and grateful for the love and honor this community has bestowed upon us and take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you for these past 56 years. We ask in our leaving that you welcome the new residents of 805 W. Progress, Rebecca and Stanley Swank and their 8 month old son. - Donald and Kaye Parsons.
