News from the Arbor Greene CDD Message From the Chairman Dear Fellow AG Residents: By the time you read this, I will have stepped down as chairman. I took a new job working for Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi, and the demands of my new position would make it nearly impossible to perform effectively the duties as chairman. Toby Thomson, who has ably served the Board and AGCDD as vice chairman for the last 16 months, will be acting chairman. Mr. Thomson has been on the Board for nearly four years, and he will do a great job leading AGCDD. These events make this my last column. With these parting words, I reflect on the progress the Board has made on behalf of AGCDD over the last couple years. To better address aspects of this aging district that require improvement and to better respond to the needs and preferences of residents, the Board has become more directly and actively involved in how AGCDD is managed (rather than simply deferring to staff and the District Manager), and supervisors have taken more individual initiative to make improvements in the District. To accommodate this expanded involvement, the Board switched to meeting twice a month (the second and fourth Mondays). This move doubled the opportunities for the Board to promptly respond to issues through official action, to discuss matters publicly, and to take input from the community The Board has improved how the tennis courts and pools operate; cleaned the curbs and sidewalks; pruned roadway trees; improved the landscaping and appearance of the District; lowered the speed limit on most roads, upgraded the police presence in the District, and made the District safer; improved the newsletter (both in appearance and production, through the hard work of Administrative Manager Claudia Mayo); and increased the efficiency of the clubhouse—all while keeping assessments flat. Also, the budgeting process has been improved to make it simpler and to ensure your assessment dollars are handled responsibly and conservatively. The Board is about to adopt a new set of rules of procedure and a new policy manual so residents more easily can understand how the Board and the District operate. And the Board now is embarking on renovating the clubhouse, inside and outside, to make it an asset of which residents can be proud for years to come. Additionally, the Board has expanded the opportunities for you—the residents—to provide feedback and participate in how our community is run. The Board, through the leadership of Supervisors Thomson and Nathan Clawson, improved the AGCDD website to make it more informative and accessible, and almost all AGCDD and HOA documents (agendas, minutes, financials, budgets, meeting packets, contracts, covenants, paint colors, etc.) are available for the public to review. AGCDD also now utilizes Facebook, Twitter, and other social media as additional outlets for communication. Plus, at Board direction, AGCDD “green boards” are better utilized to publicize pressing matters and upcoming events of the CDD, HOA, and the Neighborhood Watch. There now is an easy email address that you can utilize at anytime, from anywhere, to submit comments directly to the Board and identify areas of the CDD that need attention— comments@arborgreene.org. And the Board, with guidance from Mr. Clawson, upgraded the phone system at the community center to make it more functional and easier for residents to use. Finally, the Board worked to restructure AGCDD management—to streamline it and make it more responsive to the residents and their needs. It hired an outstanding, energetic Community Manager in Jason von Merveldt and directed him to proactively identify areas of

PAGE 2

the District that needed to be improved and to find ways to bring back the resort and community feel of AGCDD; he already has taken significant steps in that regard. The Board also empowered and entrusted our very capable maintenance and administrative managers to exercise more leadership and take on more responsibility in service to the District. The Board now has in place a wonderful management team to run the District on a day-to-day basis in a professional, effective, and service-oriented manner. This progress is part of an evolution in Board culture and perspective, as the Board continues to put time between it and the days of developer control. There is an increased emphasis on ensuring transparency, communication, and responsiveness; and there is a new embrace of the Board’s collective responsibility to provide direction and leadership to district management on behalf of you—the residents. AGCDD is fortunate to have had resident-controlled Boards in which petty conflict and dominance of personality have been mostly absent. The current Board is no exception—it runs smoothly and professionally and remains focused on the best interests of AGCDD and its residents. Of course, it stands on the shoulders of those supervisors that have come before, and we remain grateful to the resident supervisors who started us on the path on which we continue. I, of course, owe my predecessor, John Brickley, a nod for the great example he set as chairman As I turn the reins over to Mr. Thomson, I feel good about where AGCDD is and where it is headed. You should, too. We are blessed to live in such a wonderful and beautiful community. All the best,

News from the Arbor Greene HOA From the Homeowners Association!! I have one thing to ask of you this month:

PLEASE VOTE

On Tuesday, March 25th the Homeowner’s association will hold its annual meeting. The letter announcing the meeting and applications to run for the Board of Directors were mailed out mid-February. The final ballot will come out midMarch. YOU DO NOT NEED TO BE PRESENT TO VOTE – your ballot can be mailed in. 4 seats on the board of directors are up for election. In addition, we are asking the community to make a few formal changes to our covenants and by-laws. These areas include revising the language capping the maximum number of pets, allowing sports flags, potted plants, seasonal decorative flags, and making reasonable exceptions for homeowners to load up boats at their homes. The legal text of before and after will be mailed out with the ballots. The board of directors supports all of these by-law changes. These are reasonable and allow homeowners and residents to express support of sports teams and boat owners the ability to load up from their residences. We ask for a YES vote. The by-laws require 10% of residents to support the measures before they are approved. You might think that 150 yes ballots would be simple, however reality is quite different. We received less than 160 ballots last year. Every ballot counts. Please vote!!!! We hope to see all of you on March 25th.

February 8th was the date for the Women’s Self Defense class. Thank you to all who attended! I hope you found the information provided to be useful and I hope you will never have to use it! The instructors were from Tampa PD and some of the instruction that was provided were very simple techniques that I certainly never thought of. The biggest being always make eye contact with people that pass you and walk with direction and confidence. Too many times we are distracted with our cell phones, texting, shopping bags, etc, and not paying attention to our surroundings thus becoming an easy target. As an example, the instructors took video at a local shopping plaza showing women walking to and from their vehicles just simply not paying attention. They didn’t even notice a car following them taking video! I highly encourage the ladies of Arbor Greene to email me with your name and address so we can get another class scheduled. I have a handful of people signed up for the second session, but I still need more interest. Residents only please and my email address is Claudia.mayo@ arborgreene.com. ~Claudia Mayo~ ARBOR GREENE GAZETTE • MARCH 2014

Message From Your Neighborhood Watch (NWA) Coordinators - Paul & Hally Boucher “Avoiding Identity Theft” Hello Arbor Greene (AG) Neighbors. As we settle into the new year, we need to address a topic that more residents are becoming too familiar with; identity theft. This has become a relevant topic based on recent revelations of the hacking into some major retailers and hotels’ databases containing customers’ personal information. According to the Federal Trade Commission, identity theft occurs when a person uses your name, address, Social Security number (SSN), bank or credit card account number or other personal information without your permission to commit fraud or other crimes. Criminals may open a fraudulent bank account, make purchases on your existing credit cards, use your good credit to secure loans, use your name and background information to get a job, and use your name during an arrest and when they fail to appear for a court date an arrest warrant may be issued in your name. They may also change your billing address and order new ATM, debit, or credit cards. Since you will not receive the bills, you are unlikely to notice the problem for some time. Thieves can steal your information in a variety of ways: Taking your wallet; obtaining your trash and removing unshredded credit card and loan applications or documents which contain your SSN, birth date or phone number; stealing newly issued credit cards, utility bills, insurance statements, etc. from unsecured mailboxes; completing a change of address form to divert your mail to another location; placing malicious software on your computer which can steal your user IDs and passwords, sending email messages pretending to be a legitimate business and requesting your personal data; etc. Thieves continually change the ways they steal your information. Nothing can guarantee protection against identity theft in all circumstances. However, you can help reduce your risk by trying to control your personal data. Decrease access to your personal information: secure your wallet while at work or at public places like a gym; store your SSN and birth certificates in a safe location such as a safe deposit box; avoid giving out personal data over the Internet or phone; on your computer, update your firewalls and install anti-virus software that checks for spyware; use a cross-cut shredder; do not display your full name in the phone book and consider an unlisted number; do not have unnecessary personal data such as SSN or driver’s license numbers printed on your checks; etc. If your identity is stolen, you can attempt to reduce the harm to you if you detect it early. To help detect identity theft, carefully review your bank, credit card, and other financial statements and report anything which appears suspicious. Order your credit report at least once a year and review it carefully. You can receive a free credit report annually from all three credit reporting agencies – Experian, TransUnion, or Equifax; scrutinize the report in detail. Examine your mail for signs of identity theft, e.g., receipt of credit cards you did not apply for, missing financial statements, etc. If you determine you are a victim of identity theft, immediately report it to the Tampa Police Department. Also report it to your bank, creditors, and financial institutions that can put “fraud alerts” on accounts that have not been compromised and request them to not change your billing address without your written notification and verification. Establish new passwords on all accounts. Close accounts which have been used fraudulently. Cancel your ATM/debit card if it has been stolen. By letter and phone, tell credit reporting agencies you are a victim of identity theft and ask them to place a “fraud alert” on your credit profile to help stop thieves from opening accounts in your name. Contact the Federal Trade Commission to file a complaint; your data will help law enforcement agencies in their investigations. Notify your employer if you suspect your payroll and/or retirement records have been compromised. You may also need to contact the Post Office, Social Security Administration, Driver’s License Bureau, etc. depending on what was stolen or compromised.

These tips are NOT all inclusive so you will want to thoroughly educate yourself on the ways thieves steal your identity, how you can help prevent identity theft, and what you should do if it occurs. If you would like to receive additional security tips and other relevant information from the TPD, please email us at ArborGreene-NWA@hotmail.com. Joining this email distribution group does not obligate you to any other NWA activity, but should help you and your family to be better informed and more secure, making AG an even better place to live. AG NWA is an all-volunteer run program overseen by the TPD.

Thank you. NWA
