PRESIDENT COLUMN

A WORD FROM THE PRESIDENT

The Future Is Bright! by Ryan Dunklau President of the Board, American Chianina Association

T

he cattle business has brought numerous challenges with it this summer. From drought in some parts of the country to high feed costs, many cattlemen struggle to push on. But our resilience is our greatest strength. We can and will overcome the largest of obstacles. That is simply the way in which we live our lives. But enough of the gloom and doom - we also have a lot to be happy about. As is my belief, there is also a tremendous opportunity that awaits us this upcoming year. The higher cost of feed means more money in another sector of the Ag industry’s pockets. And what would be a better way to spend that influx than on a Chianina! If you had the opportunity to join us in Oklahoma this summer, I want to say Thank You for supporting our breed. It was an impressive set of cattle exhibited by the best juniors in the country. Heather put on a first-class event once again

and I am beyond excited to see what the girls come up with next year. Our breed is set on a path to not only be successful in the ring but on the scale and plate as well. We are picking up steam and gaining the interest of many. I love seeing so many people excited about the Chianina breed. We have a staff who does an incredible job in all sectors of our breed. Their presence has impacted us greatly. As the summer winds down and we move into fall, I look forward to watching our breed be successful in the show and sale ring. If you are at a state fair, catch the show. I think you will be impressed with what we have to exhibit. This fall when you are traveling around looking for your next project or just something to add to your herd, don’t be scared to raise your hand high. The quality of our breed runs deep. We would love to add you to the Chi team.

STAFF REPORTS

NEWS FROM THE ROAD By: Dustin Hurlbut, Director of Sales/Marketing, ACA Field Representative

S

ince my last article, we held Junior Nationals in Oklahoma and what a great time everyone had! For some reason Heather and Lindsay thought that Josh and I needed to drive a U-Haul filled with prizes and office supplies from the offices in Platte City down to junior nationals! They claim we drew the short straw, but truth be told we didn’t even get to draw a straw! However, when it comes Junior National time, Heather and Lindsay are the BEST in the business at making sure everything goes off without a hitch. Also, Josh and I just do what we are told to do! LOL!! All joking aside, we as an Association are very lucky to have Heather as our Junior Director! I would like to thank her for all the blood, sweat and tears that are poured into that week every year! The hours that all the staff puts in that week are crazy, but to see the kids smile and having fun makes it all worth it! It takes many volunteers and people willing to step up to the plate and help at any moment to make this event a success and I know I would forget someone if I started naming names, so I won’t. But if you helped in anyway through the week in Chickasha, THANK YOU!! In some parts of the country we still have producers who are in need of any rain or moisture they can get. They have started weaning calves early and are trying to get any hay put up or bought if they can. I am traveling right now in Indiana and Ohio while writing this and producers here are saying their crops are amazing and some even say they have had to much moisture and wish they could share. It seems like it is always a battle of some sort when it comes to agriculture. But we always prevail!

| CHIANINA JOURNAL SEPTEMBER 2021

I have started fall herd visits and have a lot of travel planned. I hope to see as many sale calves as I can for both pasture sales and online sales. So, if you are in need of a show heifer or steer give me a call and I can give you an opinion on what I have seen so far and into the fall. The ACA Sire Test Field Day is coming up on August 20 and I am excited to bring people to the University of Illinois in Champaign to see how the cattle are coming along. If you can’t make it to the field day, give Dr. Dan Shike a call and stop by to look at the cattle on feed. They would love to show them to you. There are some important deadlines coming up that you need to put on your radar. We will again have our National Sale in Oklahoma City in January, so when you are weaning calves this fall keep that in mind. Nomination deadline will be November 1st with pictures due by November 15th. It has been two years since we have done an ACA Sire Directory, but we are planning one for 2022! We will roll out a new directory in January at Cattlemen’ Congress in Oklahoma City. The deadline for this will be December 1st. This will give us time to get them designed and printed. Contact me for more info as to costs per bull and further details. We will have banners made again of the bulls to display in OKC and our booth in Denver! There is a lot of excitement going into the fall and into the winter show season and we have lots of shows on the schedule! It’s going be super busy and I look forward to seeing you at these events and on my herd visits along the way!

Fuzzy Beans & the ACA by Lyle Sexton, At Large Director

H

ello everyone, this is going to be the last one that you will have to endure from me, as I am getting down to the short rows of my second term. Being on the board is a lot like raising kids, six years from now (2 terms) is a long ways out; 6 years later it seems like we just started this morning. Raising kids, starting to attend Junior Nationals etc., it doesn’t take long to collect some great memories, friends and cattle. Such as this year in Chickasha, OK. It was well attended, well supported and another well ran event by all involved – something about the saying it takes a village!! Thanks to Heather and Dustin for putting in the time and effort to get the rest of us ducks in line. One of the many things the board has worked on is the ACA Sire Test. By the time you read this, the open house at the University of Illinois will be over. Several people who have traveled through have all said the group of calves is phenomenal for uniformity, gain and disposition and are looking forward to the end results which will help align the breed into the future and keep pushing the very positive vibe and momentum that has been building. The group that represents you (aka the board of directors) has been actively working to keep the breed in the front of mind and into the main stream of the industry. Swimming with the sharks has proven difficult a few times and the constant discussion of whether or not to go from percentages to fractions has accumulated a lot of discussion, and consumption of aspirin. BUT, Rob has gotten better at selling the idea and the membership should take more than a hard, big picture look at it and join into the discussion. When I started my first term, we had a CEO., Then events and times changed and the board looked at, and adopted the field-man idea, to spread the image in a broader pattern. This was made possible, in part, by the stepping up of the Board President to fill some of the angles and services that would have been tasked to a CEO. I would like to say a big “Thanks” to Ken, and now Ryan, for taking on the extra time and commitment that this has required. Now that the miserable year of the 2020 national health pandemic is behind us, and the membership has bounced back into the registration and transferring of this great breed of cattle, that too will be looked at hard by the board to explore filling that position. For those who read the title to this long-winded ramble and wonder what the connection is, being on the board has been very interesting, challenging and sometimes time consuming. It has also been rewarding, positive and highly educational. So hopefully those fuzzy bean field pictures floating around aren’t Ryan’s. Thanks for stepping up and giving the ACA family your time, and I look forward to the next several rounds of board members stepping up to serve for the good of the cause, the American Chianina Association.

BOARDS OF DIRECTORS

A Record-Breaking Event by Segayle Foster, Secretary & Southwest Region Director

T

he 2021 Chianina Junior Nationals was a recordbreaking event! We had more entries, exhibitors, competitive competition (especially on the kickball field) and fun in Oklahoma than any other one so far. This breed sets the standard for family atmosphere that is enjoyed by all generations and our crew got to experience that for the first time as well. Since 1999, Foster Brothers Farms has only missed a couple of Junior Nationals, and this year was the very first time we have ever traveled less than 5 hours! When you live in Texas, not many shows are close by! The closest one to our homestead was in 2006 West Monroe, La., but it was still a 10-hour drive. Not only was the 2021 Junior National the closest mileage wise, it was also the first time we personally had our next generation in the show ring. It was so neat for us to get

to introduce our littles to our friends we have known in this industry for over 20 years. That is what this industry is all about. Building relationships with people from all across the country and passing down our passion for the cattle business to the next generation. It brings a whole new level of excitement to witness the Junior Nationals through the direct eyes of children and that’s what makes the hard times of this business worth it. For our family, this summer not only saved us in mileage, but it lit the fire for our next generation to experience it for themselves as well. The ACA has a fall and winter show season that is packed to the brim with opportunities to exhibit Chianina cattle. I hope you will take advantage of these opportunities to showcase our breed and I look forward to seeing you at the shows.

Let The Good Times Roll by Tatum Miller, AJCA President

H

i everyone, my name is Tatum Miller and I have served on the Junior board the last two years as an At-Large director. I am honored to have been selected as your 2021-2022 AJCA president! The AJCA has given me so many amazing opportunities and memories, and I can’t wait for more. This year our Junior National Dhow was hosted in Chickasha, Oklahoma, and it was bigger and better than ever. Not only were our numbers up, but so was the quality of the cattle. This year we added a composite show to our program, and it brought in so many great new exhibitors. I had the best time interacting with our juniors and watching them compete in all of our contests and fun activities. The kickball tournament hosted by SC online sales was a huge hit with our exhibitors, and their extremely competitive parents too! We can be proud! Our show was a huge success! We are so thankful for all of our sponsors who made it possible for us to put on this amazing event. My fellow junior board members and I can’t wait to see you at all of our upcoming shows! Until then, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me or any other junior board member if you have any questions. We would all love to hear from you!

A Big Hello…

by Madeline Sonnenfeld, Northwest Region Director

H

ello! I’m Madeline Sonnenfeld from Minden, Neb., and I will be serving in the Northwest Director position. I chose to run for the board because I am passionate about the Chianina breed and wanted to be more involved within it. I am super excited to become more involved with both showmen and breeders. For this upcoming year I am looking forward to traveling to new shows that I haven’t been to yet. I also am eager to be more involved with the juniors of the association and make their show days great. Being able to serve on the board is a huge accomplishment for me and I can’t wait for the upcoming year! I look forward to meeting more of you during the next year.

s you sit down to read this, summer will soon be over. School for the kids is back in session, crops have matured and are near harvest and fall calving will quickly begin. It sounds like the perfect time for a summer recap. The Chianina Ladies Auxiliary has been busy! We tackled a new fundraiser late spring/early summer thanks specifically to Kaylee Tracy and the amazing group of people who submitted recipes. The finished product is amazing, and all the recipes are outstanding. To highlight the cookbook, the Auxiliary hosted the inaugural “Ladies Social” in Chickasha, during the NJHS. Foster Brother Farms sponsored the social and Seneé and Segayle prepared all the recipes, directly from the cookbook. We can’t thank them and their family enough for pulling off this successful event! We hope to make it an annual tradition! Cookbooks and Brand t-shirts are available for purchase by contacting me, Kelsey Evans, at kelseyculpevans@gmail.com or (859)553-3059. Both cookbooks and t-shirts are $14 when shipped. We also crowned new royalty during the NJHS. Hannah Ziegler from Ohio is the 2021-2022 ACA National Queen. Hannah is currently a student at Ohio State University majoring in Ag Communications and Journalism. She brings a deep routed livestock background to the table, coupled with an outgoing personality and positive attitude. Kyal Browne from Texas is serving another year as the 2021-2022 ACA National Princess. Kyal is a bright spirited person who is always eager to assist. She is a strong communicator and great with kids. Please take the time to talk with both girls at the next ACA event, you won’t be disappointed! The Auxiliary is excited for their service and look forward to a great year for both! And finally, there were 4 scholarships awarded again this summer to graduating seniors. We congratulate the following individuals: Jillian Bryant, Shea Whaley, Peyton Jackson, and Madeline Sonnenfeld. We wish each of you great success as you begin college and appreciate the opportunity to support a small piece of your education. See you in November!

T

he 2021 National Junior Heifer Show was one for the record books! With nearly 500 head of Chi cattle entered, we knew from the start it was going to be an awesome week to Let The Good Times Roll! After check in, more than 370 head of cattle were set to be exhibited in the heifer, steer and bull shows. During the week, juniors competed in quiz bowl, livestock judging, showmanship, and team fitting. Water balloons and popsicles were a hit almost daily and the highlight of the week was an EPIC kickball tournament. After a week full of fun it was time to hit the chips and watch the junior exhibit cattle at the largest junior national show in recent years. Thank you to all the families who traveled to Chickasha to spend a week with us at Junior Nationals. This annual event is a family tradition for so many and we can’t wait to do it all over again next year. Congratulations to all the juniors for an awesome and outstanding week in Chickasha, OK!

AJCA INTERN T

he summer I put it all together. Normally “putting it all together” comes at the end of your story. But I’m going to consider this summer to be the beginning of my story of where I go from here. My summer internship with the AJCA has pointed me in a career direction, given me knowledge, afforded me opportunities and brought renewed enthusiasm and purpose. Our AJCA crew, along with the AJMAA, spent ten days in Chickasha, Okla., working on anything and everything! There are so many moving parts that go into preparing for a national event that is known for being one of the best. I can now better appreciate the preparation required to bring exhibitors and families from across the country together for a week of “hot” competition in June. The highlight of my week in Oklahoma was seeing relationships unfold – meeting the exhibitors at check in at the beginning of the week and by the end of the week I’m receiving many hugs celebrating the hard work paying off in their success. Seeing the juniors smile and laugh with new friends really made the long days in the office or early mornings on show days all worth it. I also had a very special junior member, who felt like an honorary intern to me, become my right-hand man on show days. She always kept me on track and wanted to help. Her positive energy always encouraged me to keep smiling! The ACA provides one of the best learning opportunities for an internship. The daily office chatter always provided me with insight into many topics. From helpful tips on birthday celebrations, to industry knowledge, to being efficient in the day-to-day tasks while having fun and sharing laughs – the ACA office is full of wisdom! The best leaders are ones who teach by example. Heather Counts and Lindsey Broek (AJMAA) taught me valuable life lessons and offered advice that I will be able to take with me in my career. Observing them throughout preparation and at the event was an opportunity to learn from the best. I have a great respect for them and what they do for their members and this industry. So, as I “put it all together” this summer, it has solidified my dedication and desire to work in a field that promotes youth involvement within the livestock industry. I am excited to see where the next chapter of my story takes me. I will always be thankful to the juniors, industry professionals and coworkers for the relationships that I have made this summer. The industry is known for its people and their drive to make it better. The AJCA has many leaders who go above and beyond for their members, and I have loved getting to see that hold true all week in Chickasha. The people I have met and the connections I made within the breed are ones that will stay with me forever. Thank you, AJCA!

– Jaclyn

Why do you show/raise Chi cattle: I raise Chi cattle because my first experience with a Chi heifer was incredible. She was showy, good tempered and ended up being an amazing mother that enabled me to sell my first home raised bull at the Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic. Who has been your mentor & why: Robin Rutt. Robin helped my siblings and I learn the basics of grooming, feeding, and showing. She treats us like her own kids and has taught us so many things we would have not known without her. Advice to a new junior starting in the Chi breed: When attending different shows try to be as involved as possible in and out of the show ring. I also would say try to meet as many people as possible. Would we find you on the wash rack or on the blower? Blower One weird habit/fact about you: I have a jewelry and shoe obsession Favorite show animal & why? My 2019-2020 Chiangus heifer Beauty. Most embarrassing show moment: Was at Fort Worth my first year showing cattle. My heifer took off chasing another calf because she was in heat and I had never had that happen with pigs. Why do I show/raise cattle: Well I actually didn’t plan on showing Chi cattle because I had a Hereford and my heifer got electrocuted and died back in November. My mom being my mom posted on Facebook ranting and upset about it and many people reached out to her and helped me locate another heifer for my senior year of showing. We never could imagine that we would’ve met the wonderful people who run Competitive Edge Genetics that were extremely generous to give me the heifer to finish out my senior year of showing. Without them I wouldn’t have gotten into Chi cattle and thanks to them I wish to continue to help those who wish to show, but can’t and that is why I have decided to raise Chianina Cattle. Who has been my mentor and why: I would say my mom. My parents divorced a couple years back and my mom has not only raised me and my two younger siblings, but she has always made sure we were all where we wanted to be to fulfill our dreams. So without her pushing me I wouldn’t be where I am today. Advice to a new junior starting in the Chi breed: My best advice to a new junior in the Chi organization is to take advantage of every opportunity you are given because one day you will wish you would’ve taken that chance. Would we find you on the wash rack or on the blower? You would find me in the wash rack. I would much rather be washing cattle in 40 degree weather than blowing calves out. ACA Egg Extravaganza 20 years ago, a group of Chianina breeders envisioned an event that would offer elite genetic opportunities to anyone interested, with the goal of not only raising funds for the ACA, but also paying a large “winner takes all” premium to the top placing animals from these genetic packages! In 2002, the culmination of this Egg Extravaganza event took place at the ACA National Show in Louisville where the resulting calves from the elite genetic packages were shown, and the winner of the female and bull divisions took home the prize money of well over $15,000! With the vision of Larry Garrett, the idea of the Egg Extravaganza has been reborn! Dig deep, consider consigning elite genetic packages, team up with fellow breeders to form syndicates that allow you to purchase these top caliber genetics at top dollar prices, and stake your claim for the high dollar prize money in 2024!
