A WORD FROM THE CEO

Looking Forward…

Where has 2023 gone? Seems like every day goes by faster and faster! We had a great National Show and annual meeting in Louisville, Ky., in November. The shortened schedule pushed all of our activities into a short period of time and it sure didn’t seem like a lot of downtime to visit and socialize with everyone, but it was a great event nonetheless. Once again, the quality of cattle from top to bottom was unmatched by other breeds. It is awesome to stand ringside and look at the quality of the cattle from the first class to the last class. And when we get all those divisions out there to pick our champions you could really justify using any of the division champions as your champion, and to me that is what sets the Chianina cattle apart. It doesn’t matter what stage of their life they are in, they are impressive from calves to the senior yearlings!

I am looking forward to what the next year has in store for the association! We started the year off early with the National Sale in Oklahoma City followed by the Chiangus Classic Futurity. Our national sale was again another outstanding event and the shows were top notch! We will wrap up January with shows in Denver & Ft. Worth where the quality will continue to shine. The first 30 days of the new year go by real fast for me and Heather being on the road with Oklahoma City, Denver and Ft Worth! February will be here before we know it!

Has everyone seen the logo for the 2024 Junior Nationals? It has been ofishally released and I can’t wait to be “Keepin’ It Reel” in Springfield Mo!! Based on the plans Heather has shared, you definitely do not want to miss this Junior National!!!!

As always, I will see a lot of herd bull prospects throughout the spring that will definitely move your cow herd in the right direction. If you are in need of bringing new genetics into your cow herd and I can help in any way please let me know.

Make plans to join us for the 2024 Chianina/Maine-Anjou Junior National

This quote is one that I think represents the state of our breed association and the direction we are going, not just with our board but also with our amazing staff. As breeders and influencers of youth, I think we need to make sure we are doing the same. Many breeders I have had the opportunity to speak with demonstrate they all have many qualities in common with each other. They want to make the breed better and consistently want to improve not just their cattle, but also want to progressively improve our whole breed. I have had the opportunity to meet many people during my time on the board there has been one gentleman who always made the time to not just talk Chianina cattle but about life in general. He was a person who made a big push on me to run for the board. He always told me that there needed to be some young breeders to help keep pushing this breed forward and to help create awareness on how they can be some of the best mama cows in the industry. When I told him I was going to run he said he was proud of me for making that decision. He also told me that if I was elected to the board I needed to serve the right way, be progressive and help try to make a difference. That is some of the best advice that I will always keep in the back of my mind and I hope anyone who reads this will do the same!

I want to thank John Woodroof for that advice, for being a good friend, and especially for being a good person. Going to Chianina shows are different now that you don’t see him walking the isles or talking to him up at the ring. I think it is important for all of us breeders to take that advice he gave me. I am confident he had words of advice for other folks as well, and I am sure many other breeders have more stories they could share.

I think the importance of what he told me is that we all need to serve the breed. We need to advocate for the many high-quality characteristics we find in our cattle and how our breed influences other breeds in a multitude of ways, not just the show cattle industry, but in the commercial sector as well. As a breed we need to stay progressive, making our cattle better each year, implementing new genetics and making them good in the ring as well as out on pasture. The future of our breed depends on this and any real-world cattleman knows this; from the guy trying to have a commercial bull sale, to the guy who has his annual fall show cattle sale, to the guy who is feeding fat cattle and marketing Chianina beef all over the world.

The last thing that needs to be said about the future of this breed and keeping it moving forward is that we need to keep making a push at promoting our breed to the youth. We are so fortunate to have a staff who understands this and it shows by the numbers, as our junior memberships are as high as they have been in recent history. The number of exhibitors at the National Junior Heifer Show has been increasing every year. We all need to remember to take time to talk to kids, help them out, and go out of our way to educate them because who knows, you could be that person to influence a youngster to want to make their herd a hobby, side business, or even their career. Doing a little extra to help or make a difference in a junior's life is the future of our breed. We need to make sure we all take that time in our busy schedules and do our duty – invest a little bit of time and be a positive influence – and the rest will come. If we remember these things, and especially what Mr. Woodroof always told me, our potential in the future could be endless.

Mailed Registration Papers Now Optional

As digital papers are becoming more widely accepted at shows, members now have the option to select whether or not to have a registration paper mailed to them. When processing your registrations in DigitalBeef there is a check box for this option on the calf recording line. It will default to mailing you a paper, but if you prefer to not receive a mailed paper, simply unclick the box.

If you have questions, please contact the office for assistance.

Pay Balance Due in Timely Manner

Members are reminded to pay balances due prior to logging off of DigitalBeef after processing registrations/transfers or updating memberships. Please note, registration papers will not mail if a balance is due and memberships are set back to inactive status if balance is not paid before logging out. You may still pay balances by check, but please contact to office to let us know if you will be paying that way.

DNA & Genetic Testing Requirements

All sires intended for use with artificial insemination (A.I.) must be blood typed or DNA tested before semen is distributed.

A. DNA Testing on AI Sires and Donor Females

1. All AI sires and donor dams must be DNA parent verified before calves will be registered.

2. All ACA registered AI sires will be required to be tested for genetic abnormalities recognized as monitor status by the ACA based on breed make up before calves will be registered in herds outside that of the current owner, unless they are Expected Free by Pedigree. If the AI Sire is not a registered ACA sire but is registered with another association, the sire’s status for breed relevant genetic abnormalities must be known per their breed makeup. If AI sire is “commercial”, it must be tested for all genetic abnormalities the ACA monitors.

3. Embryo donor dams currently registered in the ACA herd book will only be required to be tested for genetic abnormalities of which they have been identified as being a suspect. Donor dams registered with another association must meet those association’s requirements. Unregistered (Commercial) donor dams must be tested for all genetic abnormalities regardless of breed makeup.

B. All embryo donor cows must be blood typed or DNA tested.

When parentage is questioned, blood typing or DNA testing will be required and the questioning party shall bear all the cost. For blood typing or DNA testing materials you must contact the ACA office for instructions or referral to a laboratory approved by the ACA.

C. DNA on All Herd Sires

1. ALL AI ACA registered bulls born after January 1, 2017 must be DNA parent verified before their progeny can be registered.

For questions on DNA, please contact the office at 816-431-2808. Jennifer or Stephanie will be happy to assist you.

NEW BOARD MEMBER BIOS

Four new board members were elected to 3 year terms on the Board of Directors in October. MaLaine Strope was elected to serve the Northwest Region. Jill Miller was elected to serve the Southeast Region. Keith Schrick & Donna Hildreth were elected to serve as At-Large directors.

MaLaine Strope – Nebraska –Northwest Region Director

I grew up on a farm south of Stanton, Neb., where we raised row crops, backgrounded cattle and had a cow-calf operation. We had many breeds in our small herd of less than 100 head. I grew up showing Charolais, Chianina and Shorthorn cattle. One of my favorite memories is exhibiting the Champion Chianina breeding heifer at AKSARBEN in the 1980s. Joe Lewis was judging, and he was having a tough time deciding between my heifer, Reba, and another. Prior to his final placing, while asking about my heifer, he told me that the other heifer had won the National Show in the summer. I explained to him that it was most likely because my heifer was not at the show!

We all know Chianina influenced cattle make great show steers and heifers. The show ring has always been the focus for our family, no matter the breed. Our past show heifers are expected to thrive in the Sandhills of Nebraska after their show careers. My heifer from the 1980s would not have been able to do this. However, the breed and industry have come a long way in producing better livestock. Chianina influenced seedstock are proving themselves, male or female. We need to focus our efforts to continue to produce quality cattle that are easily marketable no matter if it is for the show ring, cow-calf

producer or feedlot.

My goal as a member of the ACA Board of Directors is to first listen and learn. After that, I plan to have input to assist guiding the organization forward. This includes financial success and sustainability, increasing breed numbers, and serving our current and future membership to the best of my ability. I look forward to the opportunity.

Keith Schrick – Texas – At-Large Director

A fourth-generation farmer/rancher, Keith Schrick has been involved in the beef industry all of this life. He showed Angus heifers in FFA and that led him to Oklahoma State University where he received a B.S. in Agricultural Education.

Keith’s involvement with the Chianina breed began in June 1974 when he began using Chianina semen on commercial and Angus cows. From that start, Keith has raised percentage and fullblood Chianina.

Keith operates Schrick Land & Cattle, LTD in Millsap, Texas, in partnership with his wife Dana, and their sons, Jason & his wife Andrea and their children Jaden & Allison; and Josh and his wife Erica and their children Kagen and Kooper. Schrick Land & Cattle has been a mainstay in the Chianina breed for over 40 years. Over the years, SLC has raised and exhibited many champions at shows on the regional, state and national levels. Sons Jason and Josh were both

involved with Chianina cattle growing up and that tradition is being carried on in the next generation with the grandchildren.

After the absence of Chianina fullbloods on the ranch for many years, SLC has added a herd of Chianina fullbloods and is continuing to grow that part of their operation. The purpose of adding fullbloods back into the herd was the expand the genetic base in their Chianina and Chiangus breeding program. It is their intention to continue breeding Chianina fullbloods to strengthen overall bloodlines.

“I am excited to continue to be involved in shaping the direction of the Chianina breed into the future,” Keith said. “I have seen many changes in our breed since the beginnings and I believe we are positioning our breed to play an even larger role in the future of the beef industry.”

Donna Hildreth – Montana – At Large Director

My grandfather settled our land in 1893 and I am the third generation to reside here. In 1989, my dad, Henry D., bought the ranch’s first fullblood and high percentage Chianina bulls from Winkonley Cattle. This was the start of the “Cornhusker” genetics in our herd. Bulls from Winkonley were at least 42% Chianina, with most being 50% or higher. We bought our last Winkonley bulls in 2001. In 2005 we started purchasing bulls from Willow Oak. Today our females

BOARD MEMBER BIOS
24 | CHIANINA JOURNAL | FEBRUARY 2024

are mostly 12.5% - 33% Chianina, with a few as high as 50%. Over the last decade we have had issues with HAD, but through genomic testing and parental testing, we are getting that issue taken care of.

Chianina cattle bring a lot of good to the industry. First and foremost is breeding bull vigor. Our ranch is located in the high elevations of Montana and for our elevation and climate, we struggled to find bulls to work. Since the 1980s, Chianina and Chiangus bulls have been the only bulls on our ranch. I have not seen a bull better suited for breeding cows on the range. Over time, we have found that cattle that are at least 12.5% Chianina will have the calving vigor needed to survive.

Next is feed efficiency. This trait is not just for the feedlot. Ranchers who have miles and miles of range know that every blade of grass needs to count to gain weight on that calf that gets shipped in the fall. That blade of grass also has to count to breed a cow and feed a calf. Feed efficiency is also now more important than ever for ranchers west of the 100th meridian with the pseudo environmental movement.

Chianina cattle also have carcass merit. Almost every registered Angus sale I’ve seen in the last few years use the the catch words of “soggy, “deep” and “look at that middle”. I

call it waste on the floor of the packing plant. The beef industry needs more butt not gut.

As I write this I am thinking of the steak we just had from one of our Chiangus steers. The steaks were tender. What was better yet was it was tender meat without the excess fat. More meat less waste fat.

The temperament of the cattle is also good. Docile cattle equals better feed efficiency, weight, quality of meat and over all piece of mind when working the cattle. Every rancher and feedlot wants this. If you walk thru my herd on the range or in the valley fields the cattle are calm or come running thinking they are going to get something.

The longevity of Chianina cattle is amazing! This fall I sold my oldest cow in the herd, who was a 2007 model. She lived with the rest of the herd that not only lives above 7,200 feet in the valley floor, but climbs up and down the mountains to almost 10,000 feet in the summer. Every year I have a few cows that make it to this age doing what they‘ve done since they were calves. British breeds are worn out by the time they reach 10. For my Chi cross cows it is prime of life.

I am excited to serve on the board of directors. I hope to bring back to light the beef side of the breed as well as help come up with ways to get more beef producers submitting data to the association. I also would

like to explore working to increase the percentage of Chianina blood in the herdbook.

I have been involved in the Chianina breed as long as I can remember. My family raised Chianina cattle in Iowa and when I moved to Georgia, I continued to raise them at Talmo Ranch. Our focus the last few years has been on the beef side of the business. We sell our Chianina beef through 77 Mile Meat Co., our online beef business, as well as in our restaurant, Talmo Market Grill. We also provide beef to other restaurants in the local area. We continue to market a few show heifers each year as well.

Chianina cattle have the ability to work in so many different avenues of the beef industry. That is one of the main strengths of our breed and one we need to promote. I hope while serving on the board that I can help better the communication between the breeders and the board members.

NAILE Annual Awards

Terry & Sue Comer, Lynn, IN Promoter of the Year

Terry & Sue Comer have been great promoters of the American Chianina Association for more than 40 years. Their involvement with the association ranges from the Ladies Auxiliary to Junior programs. Sue has been a mainstay of the Ladies Auxiliary since the beginning, and still helps manage the scholarship program. Their two daughters, Lindsay & Jessica, exhibited Chianina cattle during their junior careers and now the next generation is following suit. Terry & Sue’s enthusiasm for the Chianina breed is evident in their desire to continue to support and promote the breed and the Association is honored to recognize them as the 2023 Promoter of the Year.

Commercial Cattleman of the Year

Gettinger Chiangus/Jeff Gettinger

Gettinger Chiangus, started by Dan & Barb Gettinger, have been members of the American Chianina Association since 1996. Their operation has raised Chianina and Chiangus cattle since the beginning and is currently operated by their son Jeff. Since 2012, Jeff and his family have been operating Gettinger Family Custom Meats in Rushville & New Palestine, Ind. Through their meat markets, they sell their Chianina beef through their retail market and deli, as well as offer custom meat processing. Jeff says the business was started in order to provide customers the freshest and highest quality of meat possible. The Association is honored to recognize Jeff Gettinger and Gettinger Chiangus as the 2023 Promoter of the Year.

Accepting the award on Jeff’s behalf was Dr. Becca Riggs. FEBRUARY 2024 | CHIANINA JOURNAL | 49

Not Chianina Breeder of the Year – Sara Sullivan, Dunlap, Iowa

The cross between a Chianina/Chiangus with any of the British breeds emphasizes hybrid vigor, exceptional growth rates and carcass quality. Utilizing a Chianina or Chiangus bull on your females can increase weaning & yearling weights, yield grades, feed efficiency and more.

Successful beef production starts and ends with the cow. Chi and Chi-cross mothers provide a complete package of maternal skills full of staying power. The maternal heterosis bred into these cattle compliments the natural mothering ability of Chianina.
