EDITOR’S LETTER Our ‘Wanderlust’ issue takes you on a tour of some amazing holiday homes. Whether it’s an island escape just 90 minutes from Brisbane, or an idyllic villa on the Spanish island of Majorca, or a lakeside cottage on the South Coast of NSW, you’re sure to find inspiration between these pages. At the beginning of each year, I like to think about what it is that makes me happy and how I can include more of that. At the moment, it’s to see more of Australia. So, this year I’d like to travel more – even if it means combining work photoshoots with mini vacays. With so many awesome Aussie getaways on offer, it’s never been easier to get little slices of international flavour 2

closer to home, which is why I’ve included a special ‘Wanderlust Destinations’ feature in this edition. You’ll want to add these gems to your bucket list! Alongside my desire for travel adventures, the renovation of my house continues. We have now finished decorating the guest and main bedrooms, along with the ensuite. Most of the backyard landscaping is also complete, including a cute tool shed and work-from-home studio. What’s next on the list? Planning a bigger renovation on the left side of the house, which involves structural changes. That will certainly keep me busy!

1. PURE ELEGANCE The timeless beauty of this kitchen will outlast trends, thanks to its Shaker cabinets and neutral colour palette. Designers Leah and Fliss Pitman of Bone Made describe it as a blend of classic and contemporary design. “Our concept for the home was to ensure we paid homage to the existing and beautiful Federation bones of the property,” Leah explains. “We opted for sophisticated and elegant details such as profiled cabinetry, a classic-style integrated rangehood, marble engineered stone for the bench tops and splashback, and bold and sophisticated pendants over the island bench, which really elevate the space and emphasise the beautiful high ceilings in the kitchen area.”

2 . B R E A K FA S T B A R Interior designer Kate Moss of This Vacant Space was tasked with creating a more functional kitchen for her clients. The inclusion of a breakfast bar gives the homeowners a casual spot to eat or serve food. “There is a formal dining area but because it’s an older home it’s in a separate room. The clients wanted to create an additional, more relaxed space that they could use for breakfast or serving platters when entertaining,” says Kate. “The space is an unusual shape; when you enter the home you walk into an open plan living area and kitchen,” Kate explains. “The brief was to make the kitchen feel less utilitarian and more like it was part of the furniture and surrounds. This was achieved by using integrated appliances, the addition of the custom dining table and corner bench seat, open shelving, and using green cabinetry to bring the outdoors in.”

3. BIFOLD PA N T RY Designers Alliera and Rebecca of HAAUS have used bifold doors on this pantry, making it easy to leave the doors open while it’s in use. Not only is the pantry beautiful, with its Polytec ‘Natural Oak’ matt finish, curved shelving and streamlined drawers – it’s also very practical because it doubles as an appliance cupboard. “We absolutely love the bifold doors on this pantry. They are quite inconspicuous from the outside, however, when you open them they create that instant wow factor,” says Alliera. “We could have opted for a traditional pantry here, but because we had the space, we chose to add some depth and create a whole new workspace behind closed doors.”

“While the pantry is generally used for prepping breakfast or making a quick coffee, it also doubles as a bar space when entertaining guests. Coffee cups are replaced with martini glasses and the bench space is used to mix cocktails.” - A L L I E R A A N D R E B E CCA , H A AU S

Rebecca points out that two sets of power points inside the pantry create an easy hiding space for electrical appliances such as kettles and toasters, and the deep drawers under the bench provide extensive storage for pantry goods.

5 . D R A M AT I C CO N T R A S T Interior designer Brianna Sandstrom certainly knows how to bring the drama. This kitchen design was sparked by her client’s request for a strong colour palette. “It’s exciting when a client’s vision is bold; there is an instant creative licence,” she muses. The cabinetry (painted in Dulux ‘Spiralina’) perfectly complemented the otherwise neutral palette, Brianna explains. “It was important to make sure the green cabinetry wasn’t overpowering. I balanced it out by pairing it with a monochromatic scheme. The white island with the refined black steel frame and natural stone benchtop is a lovely fresh contrast in front of the green joinery. I felt it was important to use a natural stone slab with fluid movement to soften the space.” “We didn’t want the kitchen appliances to be a feature; installing dark joinery around them allowed them to disappear,” Brianna adds. “The dark joinery is also tied back into the black steel island frame, as well as linking to other structural elements of the home, such as windows and hardware.”

6 . S TA N D O UT PA N T RY D O O R S This modern farmhouse kitchen in a heritage-listed home features Shaker-style cabinetry and stunning glass pantry doors. At 1900mm long and 800mm deep, the petite pantry is “proof you can have a beautiful and functional pantry in a small space,” says interior designer Courtney Atkinson of Bone + Blanc.

Pondering a pantry design? Marissa Hamling of Bone + Blanc suggests you begin by thinking about the items you would like to store. “We love to put drawers in a pantry. It’s a great way to utilise the space and for you to be able to see what pantry items you have,” she says. “Open shelving provides easy viewing of items and helps you to stay organised. Another great thing is having an actual benchtop in the pantry; use this space to hide appliances or extra items you don’t want on your kitchen bench.”

“The pantry doors were custom-designed specifically for this kitchen,” says Courtney. “They are an incredible height, at 2400mm high, and are made with black powder-coated steel and fluted glass.”

7. T I L E D I S L A N D In this home, interior designer Mariah Burton from Folk Studio drew inspiration from Spanish villas and farmhouses, opting to tile the front and sides of the kitchen island in a handmade terracotta tile.

INTERIOR DESIGN FOLK STUDIO / BUILD AVALON CONSTRUCTION / ARCHITECTURE TRIAS / JOINERY LUKE GEERCKE CABINETMAKERS / PHOTOGRAPHY JACQUI TURK

“The house – in particular, the kitchen – had a sense of hardness and strength to it, so we wanted to soften this by introducing a warm tile in the kitchen. It was an opportunity to highlight an imperfect and handmade tile that really aligns with the main ethos and design direction of this home: raw, handmade and built to last,” explains Mariah. “We like to take any opportunity to add more interest and texture to a kitchen. As islands are central to kitchens, this is a nice way to set the tone. Of course, having tiles and grout means a tiled island requires a little bit more maintenance than a smooth surface, but it’s worth it.”

“We drew inspiration from Spanish villas and farmhouses; the raw materiality, the minimalistic nature of them, the saturation of texture and the fluidity of indoor/outdoor living.” - M A R I A H B U RT O N

“My recommendation is to use textural elements that play off each other, such as matt tiles with high gloss stone to balance the space and ensure it doesn’t feel flat.” - A L I S O N L E WI S

8 . T O N A L T E XTU R E “Using texture within the space is the secret sauce to a room feeling interesting, especially with a neutral colour palette,” advises interior designer Alison Lewis. Alison describes her design for this kitchen as “a textural wonderland”. Using her tile choice as a departure point, she then introduced a variety of materials to create the overall look. “I knew the tiles were going to be the feature of the kitchen,” says Alison. “Given that they are super textured and matte, I decided to couple them with a high-gloss porcelain stone to create balance between the two materials.” Timber-look laminate cabinetry in a ‘Woodmatt’ finish was selected to give the kitchen some warmth against the coolness of the polished concrete flooring, and a Shaker profile for the drawers and doors gave the cabinetry definition. “Add to that some stunning wall lights to create a soft glow against the tiles and play with contrast, and my textural vision truly came to life,” says Alison. 26

9. PA I N T E D A R C H WAY Interior designer Alison Lewis had the arch entry into this butler’s pantry powder-coated in Dulux ‘Mangrove’ to add interest and depth to the space. “As the kitchen is so tonal, it was important to me that the arch was used to enhance the overall look,” Alison explains. “Choosing a deep green was a lovely way to add colour without being too polarising.” Alison says that although the butler’s pantry is compact it still packs a punch in terms of storage. “Long and narrow, the pantry benefits from storage on both sides, with shallow open shelving running the length of one wall, and deep cupboards with a sink, dishwasher and overhead cabinetry along the other wall. I wanted the space to double as a bar, so I added some open shelves for drinks, cooking books, plants and decorator pieces, freeing up the bench space below so it could be used as an additional prep area.”

Paul adds that the advantage of using a timber veneer (which is 0.5mm thick solid ash pressed to an MDF substrate) is its superior look and feel. “You can generally tell if its laminate due to the repetition of pattern and its plastic feel. When you run your hands over the veneer you can feel the texture of the grain and the actual timber, which adds warmth to the space.”

I T TA K E S A T E A M My husband and I are very involved in the running of Desert Wild, from cleaning and maintenance to messaging guests, but we still need people helping us. Finding people that you trust and who do a great job is key to getting five-star reviews. Don’t hesitate to change it up if it isn’t working; it took us a few tries to find the right team.

PHOTOS TELL A STORY I love when guests tell me our place looks even better in person than in the images, but having a professional come in and take good photographs is a must. Spend some time putting the photos in the right order, so a potential guest can get a feel for your home from inside to out.

B E YO U R S E L F I can always feel how much love a host has put into their home. Don’t just try and copy and paste someone else’s listing. Guests will appreciate a unique experience with personal touches, and it will show in your reviews.

Conveniently, it’s just a short drive to the west entrance of Joshua Tree National Park, as well as downtown shops, cafes and galleries. @desertwild_jt desertwildjoshuatree.com

First impressions of a home are key. I always spray essential oils and put music on when guests arrive to invoke all their senses. We are always asked what we use to make the place smell so good and what the welcome music mix is. We leave some little gifts and a bottle of wine as well, which takes the guests’ experience to the next level. It also goes without saying that having the home immaculate is a must.

USE A CHANNEL MANAGER These days no one can compete with the big booking engines on Google (such as Booking.com, Airbnb and Stayz). The Camilleri family’s primary home in the Brisbane suburb of Bridgeman Downs has a dark, bold feel, incorporating materials including concrete, sandstone and wood. It’s quite a contrast to their newly renovated holiday home on Moreton Island (Mulgumpin), brought to life by designer Nicola Murray of She Creates.co in collaboration with builder Michael Yabsley. “We wanted to take the clients’ style but put a spin on it where it became the opposite partner of their main home,” explains Nicola. “We carried across the natural materials such as sandstone, wood and cacti, and made a lighter tropical version.” The Camilleris had completed some renovations to their island property some time prior to Nicola and Michael taking over the project. It had a Balinese feel, with darker wood tones and a thatched roof. “Jess and Luke have a love for the coastal lifestyle; they have many beautiful memories in Byron Bay and in Noosa, where they got married,” says Nicola. “This was one of the sources for inspiration. We wanted the home to feel as though you are on a 40

holiday but still have that feeling of home.” After presenting a thorough creative direction for the renovation – everything from style and mood to finishes and a 3D model – Nicola and Michael worked with the Camilleris to select many of the finishes in person to ensure they sourced the perfect materials. Michael then organised trades and materials for the project and lived on the island while the build was completed over six months. Meanwhile, Nicola was on the mainland ordering furniture items and organising custom trades for window furnishings, upholstery, interior landscaping, house signage, and more. “It was definitely our most challenging project yet in terms of logistics,” says Nicola. “We had to get all stock delivered and stored on the mainland, and then have it picked up by a truck and sent to the island by boat. We didn’t have the privilege that we do on other jobs to duck out and grab something that we might have needed, so we had to be well organised.” >

“The name of the house is ‘Nautilus’, named after the shell,” explains Nicola. “The nautilus shell is a symbol of nature’s grace in growth, expansion and renewal. It is also a symbol of order amidst chaos, as reflected in its spiral precision, which really does represent what this home is to this beautiful family.”

The ethos of the renovation involved breathing life into the wonderful features the home already offered. Its existing cane-thatched roof, for example, was beautiful but dark, making the home feel closed in. “We decided to paint it all white, which made a world of difference, but still kept the beautiful character of the original home,” Nicola points out. The interior is now full of soft curves, stunning natural materials and breezy linens, which combine to achieve the home’s relaxed coastal feel. It’s hard to pick a single favourite aspect of the house, says Nicola. “But I must say, when you walk up the stairs into the kitchen and living area and see the ceilings and the beautiful view from all angles, it feels like you’re stepping into heaven on earth.” Nicola says Luke and Jess were speechless when they saw the finished product. “They couldn’t believe what they were seeing,” she recalls. “It was a beautiful moment that gave me goosebumps.”

From the deck of this holiday house, the water of Lake Conjola shimmers through the branches of native trees lining the shore. The home’s private water frontage is what bewitched Zoe and Dane Cartwright the first time they saw it. “We discovered the property by chance after enjoying a lovely weekend on the water with friends and family,” Zoe explains. They bought it in December 2020 and carried out an extensive renovation with their South Coast build, design and landscape company, Projection Build. The idea was to custom-design it as a holiday property, Lumière Lakes, inspired by their own home, Lumière House, in Mangerton. “We wanted somewhere low-maintenance that could be easily rented on the holiday property market while we weren’t using it – built to entertain and host, like a secluded waterfront resort.” Lake Conjola is part of the Shoalhaven region of NSW, an area offering visitors a diverse range of attractions – from watersports such as skiing, kayaking and paddleboarding on the lake, to bushwalks, cycle tracks, restaurants, wineries

and a coastline of excellent surf beaches. Zoe and Dane’s redesign worked with existing elements of the home and orientated entertaining areas and windows to take in the beautiful view of the lake. Key to the revamp was maximising the block’s long square footage, creating a seamless indoor-outdoor lifestyle that lent itself to year-round family and group entertaining through the addition of multiple alfresco areas. “With an open plan living, dining and butlers pantry, the home flows onto a large deck with a 10-seater entertainer’s table and lounge area around a fireplace. Stepping down off the terrace, we built a fully equipped outdoor entertainer’s kitchen and BBQ, with a large dining table and chairs, bar fridge and additional bathroom, perfect for the kids to run in from the water and clean off. This alfresco area sits overlooking the water, beside a level grassed area, great for playing with the family. area, including fire pit and lounge area, and another dining space, ideal for long lunches and sunset dinners. The water’s edge is fully grassed, nestled under the trees and perfect for a lakeside picnic,” Zoe explains. “With room to sleep up to 10, we wanted to ensure we could comfortably fit larger groups without it feeling too cramped, whether staying or visiting.”

>

Inside, the mood is airy, soothing and elegant. “We appreciate the importance of light-filled, calming, warm, resort-style living,” says Zoe. “I wanted to use natural timbers, raw earthy stones and linens to create a relaxed holiday vibe. We went out to our favourite local suppliers to help us source these products.” The home’s front entryway is flanked by king bedrooms, followed by a “kids’ cave” with custom-built bunk beds – a savvy choice that allows the home to comfortably sleep two families. The main ensuite and guest bathroom are serene cocoon-like spaces with fluted stone

tiles and curved lines. And in the open-plan living and kitchen area, a generous breakfast bar invites languid chats over food and drink, while a galley-style butler’s pantry is a stylish and practical addition. Throughout the house, the interplay between curved lines and the geometry of raked ceilings and skylights cultivates feelings of flow and balance. This harmonious aesthetic is echoed in soft furnishings and a restrained colour palette of warm beige, stone, timber and crisp white. For Zoe, the best spot in the house is outside, soaking in the view of the lake. “Enjoying an afternoon drink around the fire at the water’s edge, watching the sunset and the boats go by, is something very special.”

This discreetly luxurious holiday home is tucked away in the village of Deià, on the Mediterranean island of Mallorca. Prior to its renovation, the house had low ceilings and a gloomy interior, explains architect Manuel Villaneuva of More Design. Its transformation involved removing the ceilings and many of the interior walls in order to open up the space. The home now feels expansive and airy – especially in the living and dining area, where a high cased opening in an internal wall registers the further volume of the passageway beyond. On one side of the opening, the original structural pillar – built from handmade clay bricks – has been deliberately left exposed. “It’s a beautiful piece of construction, and quite rare,” says Manuel. “One might call it an archeological approach to structural elements,” he adds. Similarly, alongside a new fireplace in the living room, “we rendered the wall with lime plaster, but not all the way to the top,” says Manuel. “You can see the beautiful original stone wall above the plaster.” Retaining these original, tactile features serves as a reminder of the material history of the house, and subtly celebrates an unpretentious,

uniquely Mallorquin approach to home-making. This design approach was facilitated by the homeowners, says Manuel. “They wanted to respect the existing volumes as much as possible – not try to achieve maximum buildable area on the property – and keep the house to the existing single storey.” The home is on the outskirts of Deià, one of Mallorca’s most popular villages for holidaymakers, which has nevertheless managed to retain an authentic and peaceful atmosphere. Positioned along the road towards the neighbouring village of Sóller, it enjoys long hours of sun all year round, as well as breathtaking views towards the Mediterranean Sea. More Design made the most of this gorgeous location by reorganising the exterior landscaping of the house and redeveloping its outdoor spaces. There are two shaded dining areas – one adjacent to the pool and another at the front of the house, positioned to make the most of the views. “We redid all the surfaces and created built-in planters that also helped organise the areas, creating zones for sun loungers, for seating and so on,” says Manuel. >

HOME TOUR

Everywhere, a sense of discretion and authenticity prevails. The home’s poolside casita (a separate guest suite) was reorganised with the same philosophy, Manuel explains. Its interior was carefully “cleaned up” architecturally, with the original features retained. A stone arch – saved from another space in the house – was added to the casita to form a striking new doorway, and finished with a pair of custom-made metal and glass doors. When it came to creating interiors for the home that complemented the building’s aesthetic, the owners called on More Design’s interiors department, More Decor. “The clients wanted a gentle, harmonious feel – timeless, but with clean lines and functionality that could accommodate family life,” explains More Decor’s Tille del Negro. The result is a series of serene spaces that combine natural textures and classic lines to create an overall mood of languid, effortless luxury.
