EDITOR’S LETTER I bought a house! And here’s the kicker: it’s one street back from our current home. As I write this, I’m in the depths of planning a full-blown renovation of the new house. It’s a cute 1960s place, filled predominantly with asbestos sheeting – fun times! But I’m up for the challenge, and I’m using the settlement period to organise quotes and line up trades (including professional asbestos removal of course) so we can go full throttle once we get the keys! I have planned the look of the exterior, rearranged the floor plan (including a small extension to the front of house) and picked a colour scheme. I’ll be playing to the home’s strengths and working with its mid-century architecture, rather than fighting it and making it something it’s not. We’ll be taking inspiration from – you guessed it – Palm Springs, the holy land for mid-century design (although we won’t go too literal because I don’t want it feeling like a 1960s museum).

Location The Calile Hotel

Anyone who knows me knows of my love for Palm Springs. I’ve been fortunate enough to visit three times, so it’s with great excitement that I bring a little slice of the desert oasis to Australia. Be sure to follow our reno journey on the @adoremagazine Instagram account, and you can catch extra content on the home’s very own handle, @higletthouse.

BOOIE + BEN

In her latest collection, Laura Staniford of Booie + Ben celebrates the peace and rejuvenation that one feels when immersed in nature. WORDS NICHOLA DAVIES

Throughout her studies in interior architecture and her career experience in architecture and large-scale design concepts, Laura Staniford worked extensively with graphic drawing. “It was here that I developed a love for graphic art and design,” says Laura. It wasn’t until she had her two children that she knew she needed to explore her creativity and give herself an opportunity to develop her own artwork series. “I launched my first 18

collection in 2019 and I have never looked back!” says Laura. “I feel like I have found my passion with Booie + Ben and am so grateful that I can pursue this as my career.” As a graphic artist, Laura uses her laptop to create her pieces from start to finish. She loves the freedom this affords her to work from anywhere – whether it’s beachside or at a cafe. Laura says her artistic style is driven by beautiful colour palettes, taking inspiration from the natural environment. “I love going on nature walks and find so much inspiration there,” says Laura. “I always take my camera with me to snap all the beautiful flora that captivates me. There is so much beauty,

Laura says that for her latest collection, ‘Flora Series’, she wanted to showcase her love of green-blue tones and intended the collection to feel soft and calming. “I love the colour palette in this series – it really blends beautifully into Australian homes,” she says. Laura creates her trademark sense of softness and serenity using colour, but also through her patterning and use of smooth, organic shapes and textures. Her next collection, which we can expect later this year, will reflect some of her favourite flora from along our beautiful Australian coastlines.

“Although we incorporate some trends that suit our aesthetic and values, we make sure that our pieces are timeless,” Jessie points out. “We also delight in gorgeous, mostly locally made, selfcare and sensory products.”

LOVES

Take a stroll down Montville’s charming Main Street and you’ll find Bailey Loves – a design lover’s paradise. PHOTOGRAPHY COAST PARK CREATIVE WORDS NICHOLA DAVIES

At the start of 2020, Jessie Bailey noticed an empty store that had a stunning view over the Sunshine Coast hinterland. Looking beyond the “nasty old carpet tiles and yellowing walls”, Jessie envisaged a perfect space to show how

interior design can affect the way we feel. “The amazing view is the perfect example of prospect and refuge, where we can stand from a safe place and look out to a view that is abundant and green without threat,” says Jessie. “We feel better when we are looking at a view like this – it can reduce our heart rate and blood pressure. Incorporating elements of this theory into everyday interior design is so important to me; that’s why I wanted to showcase it in this setting.” Bailey Loves is an interiors store characterised by an appreciation of the beauty of nature. “We use a natural and earthy colour palette, with natural materials including timber, rattan and linens. We value the handmade,” says Jessie.

Jessie became a qualified designer about a decade ago, but says she found her passion when she studied biophilic design, which focuses on connecting people with nature. An interior design service was a natural addition to the store. “Owning a retail shop opens up a huge range of furniture and homewares for my clients that they wouldn’t usually be able to access easily,” Jessie explains. “Ultimately though, our mission is to make people feel better in their homes in the most beautiful way, so I want to be able to help in any way I can.”

SEASIDE LIVING This family home located in Redhead (a small beach town just south of Newcastle) has been gradually renovated over the past 20 years to reflect the homeowners’ laid-back global style.

Bernadette Cross and her husband Connor have spent two decades in their house at Redhead, a small beach town between Newcastle and Lake Macquarie. In that time, they’ve extended and transformed the home to accommodate three children – Scout (19), Jack (14) and Skip (6) – and their beach lifestyle. “Our free time is spent by the sea and in the sea,” Bernadette says simply. This synergy with the seaside is at the heart of their home’s airy, romantic aesthetic – reminiscent of dreamy holidays and barefoot wanderings. “It has a white, light and bright palette like a blanching heat on a summer’s day, with echoes of blush and natural timbers so that the bush and nature never seem far away,” says Bernadette. “Sand is always edging its way in, and my garden is a natural coat hanger for wetsuits and beach towels.” The home is bordered by greyed timber decking and lush tropical gardens. A Shaker-style front door opens to reveal a lovingly curated entryway plastered in Mineral Fox ‘Ibiza’ plaster, with Moroccan clay tiles underfoot. “Our entryway is

small, so I wanted it to pack a punch,” explains Bernadette. In the living space beyond, an all-white backdrop is warmed by natural tones and textures in pendants, rugs, ceramics and textiles. Greenery on all sides of the Mediterranean-style kitchen eliminates the need for window coverings, and a servery opens onto the deck for late barbeque dinners in summer, when the family lingers on the beach until after dark. A generous 10-seater teak table and a collection of white sofas set the tone for casual socialising and relaxation. For Bernadette, creating a welcoming and soothing atmosphere for her children is important, “so that they want to open up and talk here, invite their friends over, and feel their home is their sanctuary”.

K I T C H E N The kitchen renovation was the starting point for the home’s overall aesthetic change. “It started with ripping out the galley kitchen and bringing it out into the space with an island bench, and painting the floors white,” explains Bernadette. < out across rugged Redhead Beach. The home’s styling artfully combines multiple influences. “You can travel the globe in one of my rooms,” quips Bernadette. “There’ll be an antique altar from China, doors from India, an Indonesian daybed, Aussie Queenslander VJ panelling, Ibizan plaster, British brass light switches, a rug from Morocco, linen from Italy, a pendant from Mykonos, a wall hanging from Bangladesh, and a ceramic dish from a small studio in Newcastle.” Bernadette describes the home as “a living memory of our travels”. It also changes with the elements: furniture is moved to catch the sunlight, outdoor dining shifts around the verandas to shelter from wind or sit closer to blossoming plants, hammocks find shady spots, rugs are added and subtracted depending on the weather. “I live seasonally,” she explains. The mindfulness with which Bernadette

approaches her home is echoed in her work as a clinical psychologist. She likens the therapy process with patients to “a storytelling that brings clarity”. Similarly, she muses, designing a home weaves together experiences and messages in a creative way. “I think that interior design is another form of playing with mood and emotions and storytelling.” The family’s cherished beach house continues to evolve – a communal canvas that both reflects and shapes the lives of its inhabitants. “I am very mindful that this is our home and it’s important that we all get a chance to create a history of this home,” says Bernadette. “I also like to think that if our house and all that’s in it tells a story, then it is a living thing like us.”

HOME TOUR

Once a well-loved coastal family home, this house in Sydney’s Avalon Beach was dramatically reworked to create a high-end resort-style space that’s continually energised by its interaction with the outdoors. Designer Sarah Parry-Okeden is no stranger to home makeovers. Since establishing her property and interior design business Wild Orchid Spaces ten years ago in the USA and subsequently bringing it back to Australia, she’s transformed a suite of residences with her trademark style. This one, Bellevue Avenue, was bought by Wild Orchid Spaces in 2019, underwent extensive renovations, and was then rented as holiday accommodation for a year prior to selling in January 2022. Sarah explains that flow and synergy between outdoors and indoors was central to the home’s redesign. The renovation included opening up ceiling cavities to add height and light to the rooms, as well as reorienting one wing of the house to align rooflines and create symmetry from the street view. By carefully juxtaposing natural and manmade

42

elements, Sarah and her team fostered a twoway relationship between nature and the home’s interior decor. “We created visual interest through layers of textures and tones within the colour palettes, complementing and influenced by the landscape design we created within the gardens,” she explains. The home’s living area opens onto an expansive alfresco entertaining zone, where a sandstone fireplace and lounges provide a warm spot from which to admire the garden, while a 20-seater table and chef’s barbeque cater to large gatherings. Continuity between inside and outside is achieved via the use of the same stone flooring and ceiling details in both zones, along with pendant lighting throughout. In this alfresco area, a dramatic installation of 15 pendants is one of Sarah’s favourite features. The pool, framed by white tiles, raw timber bench seating and a low stone wall, leads the eye towards deep-green tropical foliage beyond. At 3.8m x 8.6m, the lap pool appears deceptively large thanks to the oversized seating area alongside it. >

< Sarah’s approach to her projects is a process of uncovering original beauty (“a house will tell its story if you look closely enough”) then working intuitively and meticulously to develop interior looks room-byroom. “I often get to work on curating for the spaces almost immediately after purchase, as I like to build a property around furniture – not the other way around,” she says. She blends old with new, fossicking in antique stores for “hidden gems that add soul and a certain energy to a space”. “I also like to custom make pieces of furniture; a room may need something bespoke to make it sing,” she says, adding that three custom vanities were created > for this home. adore home

She builds in natural materials then softens the look with carefully curated furnishings, fixtures and textiles. “I have a deep love of texture and will always incorporate a sandstone or stone of some kind into each space, pairing that with other natural materials such as leathers, ceramics and metals.” Her eclectic approach has been informed by time spent living overseas, as well as working in fashion. “I have been greatly influenced by the places that I have lived and the houses I grew up in,” she says of her style, which brings together elements from India, Africa, the Colorado mountains and – in the case of this home – the Australian seaside. “I have a huge appreciation for the laid-back nature of Australian coastal interiors, as they are usually so fresh and inviting.”

Creative couple Jessi and Koombs made the move from Sydney to the Gold Coast with their two little ones (human and dachshund) a month before the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

living room, media room and main bedroom to add impact to the home’s interior. “As our home is mostly white, we wanted to create some contrast,” says Jessi.

“We wanted to have a home with a backyard for a dog and to cater to our growing family,” explains Jessi. “That didn’t seem possible with our budget in Sydney. We wanted a slower-paced life and the Gold Coast seemed to offer that.”

Jessi and Koombs tackled the landscaping themselves – a feat made easier by the fact that green-thumbed Koombs is a bricklayer with experience in stonemasonry. Sourcing inspiration from gardens on Instagram and Pinterest, the couple had a rough idea of what they wanted: “tropical plants, different seating zones, a barbecue area, a low-maintenance garden, and a backyard that the family could enjoy and spend a lot of time in”.

Opting for a new build for their family home, Jessi and Koombs chose a standard design through GJ Gardner Homes, adding some customisations like the raked ceilings to suit their needs. “We wanted a lot of natural light,” says Jessi. “The raked ceiling provides heaps of light and makes the main living spaces feel bigger and brighter.” “Open-plan living was really important to us to bring the outdoors in, and we wanted our main bedroom to open onto the pool to create a relaxing atmosphere and the feeling of being on holiday.” The couple chose a black, VJ-panelled feature wall in the study and black feature walls in the 54

The landscaping is designed around the pool, which sits in the rear corner of the property. Jessi says it was important to get the placement right, in order to maximise the other areas of the backyard on the 450sqm block. The bench seat and planter boxes are an original design feature dreamt up by Jessi and Koombs, who were looking to elevate their plants and create privacy from neighbours. “The planter box >

< and bench seat were perfect for the space,” says Jessi. “The area can also be seen when you’re standing in the dining room, kitchen and living room, so we wanted to make it a feature and create a view from all of these rooms.” The process wasn’t without challenges though; the planters needed to be redone to make them higher and able to hold bigger plants. The area also originally had real turf that had to be ripped up – twice – due to lawn grubs. “Artificial turf has been amazing,” says Jessi. “It’s green all year round, low maintenance, and our daughter and dachshund Maple love playing on it.” In addition to being open to the option of artificial turf, Jessi and Koombs’ top tips for DIY landscaping are to source plants locally and check out Facebook Marketplace for bargains. “Almost all of our plants are from local nurseries,” explains Jessi. “We purchased many items, such as the breezeblocks and railway sleepers, which we used as steppers by the pool and the front of the house, from Facebook Marketplace.” The couple say they saved “so much money” by choosing to do the landscaping themselves – a big win for this growing family.

Pool *window

This pool is tucked neatly into an underutilised space in this backyard. “It features an acrylic pool window, mosaic Ezarri tiles and a design that takes you to your very own slice of heaven,” says Kate Lainson of Cronulla Pools. As the land is sloped, Kate says the most practical solution was to raise the spa and install a pool window. “Utilising the clear window for the spa wall optimised the water view from the kitchen for our client,” explains Kate.

INITIAL CONSIDERATIONS

So, you want a swimming pool? There are several important things to think about before you start digging up your yard. “If you’re assessing your block, pondering whether or not you’ll be able to put a pool in, there are a few things to consider,” says Kate Lainson of Cronulla Pools. “Access is a big factor; how we get the machine out the back to dig the pool is dependent on the width of the access. And the wider the better – size matters here! A larger machine means a more efficient and costeffective dig. We love anything over a metre, however if you’re on a small property then we can go as narrow as 800mm.”

“Another big factor to consider is whether you have any water assets underground. Depending on the depth and location, this could affect your ability to build the pool or force you to encase a pipe, which will add to the cost of the build,” says Kate. Beyond the actual pool installation, there’s also landscaping to consider – a crucial element that will make or break your space. The most common mistake pool owners make, according to landscape architect Johnny Derwent at Site Design + Studios (who designed the beautiful pool area shown on this spread), is not getting an overall plan. “Unless you really know what you

are doing, for a few thousand dollars you can get a plan with all the related landscape spaces organised for you. We often pick up projects where a pool builder has just offered the shell, and once the shell is in, the homeowner can see there is much more to consider,” says Johnny. “Walking into a backyard with a pool and landscape all working together and thinking ‘this looks like it belongs here’ is what you want to achieve. That only happens through good design. Having a design plan also allows you to budget better, as the design can be fully quantified and altered easily if needed,” advises Johnny. adore home

POOL TYPE When it comes to choosing a pool, you have two choices: concrete or fibreglass. Concrete pools are very popular and ideal for custom shapes and designs. “A concrete pool is great for its ability to be flexible. You can design any shape and size you wish to suit your block,” says Kate Lainson of Cronulla Pools, who were responsible for the pool build pictured above. “We also love concrete for its strength, durability and prestige finish. You can customise the interiors to either be fully tiled or finished with Designer Beadcrete – it makes for a really beautiful pool,” says Kate.

“Plungies are incredibly versatile and can be installed in ground, out of ground or anywhere in between,” says Ben. “They’re great for when you want to tie the pool level into a deck or raised living area. The hard work of “forming up” a pool out of ground isn’t necessary as this is all taken care of in the factory. A Plungie is also perfect for a sloping site, where it can be cut in at the perfect height to create the desired outcome.” If it’s price point and installation time that are key deciding factors, look no further than a fibreglass pool. Standard installation will take approximately ten days, although there are many factors that come into play, including site access, pool size, soil profile and the weather.

68

POOL PLUNGIE AUSTRALIA

If you like concrete but need something more budget-friendly, a prefabricated concrete pool from Plungie could be a better option. Ben Schluter, business development manager at Plungie, says their pools are manufactured with precision in a factory setting, arriving on site pre-finished, saving a huge amount of time and labour.

how much?

The Plungie Studio pool (3.6 x 2.2m) in Kona Coast ecoFINISH pictured here costs $16,990. Installation is extra, and costs can vary from site to site and are dependent on access for craning the pool into position, whether the pool is in or out of ground, as well as the level of finish and surrounds like tiling and fencing.

Glass fences are usually fixed with spigots, but this pool fence is held up by an invisible channel fix for a more aesthetically pleasing look. “The aluminium channel the glass sits in needs to be set into the concrete when the concrete is poured,” explains Josh Harrison. “This ensures the glass remains structurally sound.”

LANDSCAPE DESIGN HARRISON’S LANDSCAPING / PHOTOGRAPHY HANNAH BLACKMORE

FENCING One of the most important factors when installing a pool is safety – so a pool fence needs to be not only good looking but compliant. Kate Lainson of Cronulla Pools says there are strict council guidelines and pool fences need to comply with boundary fence heights and internal pool fence heights. “Eliminating any potential climbable threats like trees or ledges on fences is also a must.” When it comes to materials for pool fencing, your three main options are glass, timber or powdercoated steel. The most visually unobtrusive fencing option is frameless glass, making it a popular choice. Josh Harrison of Harrison’s Landscaping (who designed the area above), says it’s cheaper than timber or steel fencing. “It’s really fast to install (it usually takes less than a day), it’s highly customisable and there are numerous mounting options such as spigots, channel set or side mounted.” When it comes to cleaning glass fencing, Emma Doman of BLOOM Landscape Architecture 70

adore home

recommends using a coating like Ezicleen to make cleaning easier and minimise water marks. She points out some further considerations with glass. “Pool fences require earthing if they are too close to the pool edge. It’s more of an issue for urban sites and this often gets missed when budgeting for a pool. I’ve also seen glass fencing act like a magnifying glass and scorch nearby grass patches, however frameless glass pool fencing creates a feeling of openness and airiness like no other,” says Emma. For those who want a low-maintenance option, a powdercoated steel fence is a great alternative to glass. This elegant customdesigned fence (pictured opposite page) was made for landscape designer Ben Scott’s client. “We decided against a glass fence due to the proximity of the pool fence to the pool; it would have constantly required cleaning,” says Ben. “A powdercoated steel fence requires minimal maintenance, if any, however it is more expensive than glass.”

WATER OPTIONS Gone are the days where chlorine and salt were your only choices for water filtration. Nowadays, purer and more skin-friendly options like magnesium and fresh water rule the pool. “All of the pools we build at Cronulla Pools use Theralux filtration equipment, which is a magnesium-based pool,” says Kate Lainson. “Most of our clients have children, so mineral pools are always the way to go – economical, easy to manage, and a beautiful body of water to swim in. No smell or taste, no green hair, and it soothes your muscles while you’re swimming.” Even magnesium-filtration systems rely on low levels of chlorine though. The ultimate choice now is fresh water, with a Naked Pool system. Kate explains five reasons you’ll want to convert to fresh water: “The water in your pool will be fit to drink; you’ll save time and money with fewer chemicals and less power consumption; it’s super gentle on sensitive skin types; there’s no need to continually wash your cozzies or towels (or kids!) after having a swim; and you’ll be demonstrating environmental responsibility.” A NKD-R Freshwater System uses silver and copper to ionise your pool, keeping your swimming pool water free from algae, bacteria and other unwanted and harmful organisms. The best part is that there are minimal chemicals and therefore little maintenance required, providing you with crystal clear pool water. You can also convert an existing swimming pool over to this type of filtration system. adore home

Interior designer Katrina Lumsden’s business, Studio Haven, works with owners of holiday homes to transform their getaways. When it came to building an entertaining space at the rear of her own home, it was only natural that she would use her skills to create an enviable escape for her own family. “A resort-style Bali beach club is what we call it!” says Katrina. “Music, cocktails, relaxing, and enjoying time with friends and family.” Katrina and her husband Peter, who was the owner builder of the project, wanted to create something unique and beautiful that would showcase Katrina’s design work and bring in a little extra income. Deciding against an Airbnb, they opted instead to build a space that could be used as a photoshoot location. Utilising wasted space behind their existing pool, they designed ‘Studio Haven’ – a functional entertaining zone complete with a room overlooking the pool, a bathroom, >

The build kicked off in early 2020, with preparation and formwork completed during the first lockdown. “Then, on weekends and when we had spare time, we managed trades and would both work on the space,” explains Katrina. The family spend plenty of time in the finished space, listening to music and reading books on the daybed, and enjoying the ambience of the fireplace at night. The area is perfect for photo shoots too. “There are so many nooks and corners for photographers to capture their shots,” says Katrina.

The owners of this impressive residence on the banks of the Noosa River weren’t afraid to have a little fun when it came to their outdoor styling. While the home’s interior is languid and calming in its earthy palette, the exterior entertaining area offers a colourful and imaginative escape. Chloe Tozer, founder and creative director of CLO Studios, who were responsible for the home’s interior decor, points out that the palettes inside and out were carefully balanced. The muted natural tones of the river and its dense native foliage inspired the restrained elemental colour scheme of the interior, while “in contrast, large art pieces and pastel colours intermingled into the interiors and outdoor living spaces”. A custom pool links the home’s earthy interior and its spirited alfresco area. With its glass 80

wall adjoining the riverbank, the crystalline pool itself is an interesting counterpoint to the natural world beyond. In planning the outdoor pavilion, Chloe says, “the key was to create a space that didn’t stand apart from the interior but rather was an extension of the design, with a playful touch”. The home is the work of award-winning Sunshine Coast building designer Chris Clout. “The furniture and styling throughout the property complements the building design, capturing playful shapes, colours and textures,” Chloe explains. “The brief was to create a beautiful, functional and fun family holiday retreat,” Chloe says of the outdoor entertaining zone. A bespoke sofa and cushions by CLO Studios and a high circular table

for poolside dining channel the unfussy luxury of European summers. Bisazza tiles by architect and designer India Mahdavi adorn the wall, providing a perfect light-hearted backdrop that delights in colour and shape. A spiral staircase leads to a rooftop terrace. “Circular staircases are seldom seen,” Chloe notes, “but they are always a lovely way of breaking straight lines and drawing your eye up to the sky and sun.” Enticing and nostalgic, the rooftop is every bit the sunbather’s dream – complete with cascading plants, sun loungers and subtle-pink stripe umbrellas.

Landscape architects Exterior Architecture were tasked with reworking this 80m² space. Exterior Architecture’s director, Toby France, explains that the existing garden was very plain – just the pool, a patch of grass and an unwelcoming alfresco area. With a brief from the owner that she wanted a modern Grecian resort-style space where she could relax and enjoy the pool, Toby and his team got to work creating a series of luxurious zones. “She loves the sun and light colours, so we really tried to emphasise this,” Toby points out. The pool area was renovated to include a new spot for lounging, as well as a breeze-block wall complete with outdoor shower. The breeze blocks mask pool equipment and add interest to the space, while sun lounges and bag-rendered

booth-style seating on new composite decking make the area feel welcoming and exciting. To create a functional entertaining space, the team designed a new outdoor kitchen complete with a pizza oven and a separate bar and sink area built into custom cabinetry. While Toby says there was “some back-and-forth getting the layout of the kitchen and bar area right”, the final product was very close to his initial design. “The main change from my design was actually the final planting selection around the pool,” Toby explains. “Originally, I wanted to have a screening plant, but we ended up opting for a dry cactus garden, which has worked wonderfully.” Manzanillo olive trees – essential to the

Mediterranean vibe – were planted around the alfresco area, with a minimal selection of underplanting including Zoysia grass, lamb’s ear and Buxus microphylla japonica (Japanese box). The pool zone features a range of cacti, including Euphorbia, prickly pear and Cereus. Toby says he loves the feel of the new space, where many small details (such as white powder-coated strip drains that disappear against the crazy paving) have worked to create a polished and beautiful space. And the client couldn’t be happier, describing it as “a dream”. “For an area on the smaller side, Toby has managed to create a versatile entertainer’s paradise that is warm and inviting all year round,” she says.

Before they radically reworked it, the garden at Bec and Colin Wyatt’s mid-century bungalow in Miami featured a muddle of grass varieties, narrow garden beds and a scattering of palm trees. Inspired by cottage gardens but limited by the block’s sandy coastal soil, Bec instead researched dry garden ideas, cleverly substituting flowers with the colourful foliage of Australian natives and succulents. Having chosen their hard landscaping and pulled up their lawn, Bec and Colin enlisted a landscaper to assist with the garden’s layout. “With the help of three labourers, we placed our bluestone pavers and our new plants,” recounts Bec. “My initial reaction was one of regret. It was far from an instant garden, but over the coming months our seedlings and plants grew and spread to create our dream garden.” The result is a layered and textural space, with plantings including Kalanchoe Silver and Copper Spoons, Dichondra Silver Falls, Senecio Chalk Sticks, Blue Bird Jade, Cardboard Palms, Westringia, aloes and cacti. Tucked behind a breezeblock wall, Palissade armchairs and inbuilt concrete seating alongside an outdoor fireplace provide a perfect spot for winter evenings. A pathway of bluestone pavers leads to an alcove where a concrete dining table is sheltered by mature olive and banksia trees. Bec’s favourite plants change with the seasons. “In spring it is definitely the jasmine hedge which runs down the south side of our garden; in winter it is the flowering aloes; the Banksia integrifolia at any time of the year is spectacular; and in autumn the Banksia Birthday Candles have my heart!” The garden’s secluded zones (there’s also a pool and barbecue area at the front) have become an extension of the house itself. “After growing to appreciate our home’s simple and thoughtful structure, we could never bring ourselves to alter its original state,” Bec explains. “This led us to seek space outside our walls and grow a garden that offered privacy from the evergrowing busyness of the Gold Coast.” “I wanted to feel as though I could be a thousand miles away, and this is what our outdoor space has given our family – a peaceful sanctuary.”
