SheShed ‘Coastal’ cabin kitset $20,600 sheshedz.com.au

Spring is finally here, and I can finally announce that I’m moving back into my newly renovated home! It’s been a long time coming – about six months in total. My partner and I packed our bags in late March and moved in with my parents in Maleny. For those who aren’t familiar with it, Maleny is about one-and-a-half hours’ drive from Brisbane, in the Sunshine Coast hinterland. It’s been absolute bliss living in the country. Every afternoon we spot the wallabies in the paddock, say hello to the cows next door, and admire the gardens that are always in bloom with a kaleidoscope of colour. It will be sad to say goodbye, but it also feels good to be heading home and getting back to some sort of routine. High on the agenda is fitting out my SheShed (pictured), which, embarrassingly, has taken me much longer to finish due to the move and reno chaos. I’m also keen to tend to our backyard, which could use a bit of post-reno TLC. I’ve missed getting out there and keeping on top of the weeding and mowing (yes, I’m one of those people who are obsessed with their lawn!). It seems fitting that this issue is our Makeover edition. Having just gone through a major home makeover and made it out the other side alive (and broke), I think this issue will provide plenty of renovation ideas if you’re about to embark on one yourself. Until next time...

- LONI PARKER, EDITOR

sneak peek!

Here’s a sneaky look into my backyard. We installed this gorgeous ‘Coastal’ cabin from SheShed earlier this year and painted it in Tint ‘So Fresh and So Clean’. We also had a small deck built using composite decking from Ekodeck. Next up: finishing the interior design – stay tuned for the full reveal on the Adore blog, Instagram and YouTube channel.

We’re counting down six of our favourite bathroom styles – from retro to organic and everything in between.

BATHROOM STYLES

The ensuite (pictured right) in this mid-century modern home exudes vintage charm in a contemporary way, using materials including terrazzo, fluted glass, and timber. “We have created warmth by layering a combination of textures and tones,” says interior designer Kristin Kurko of Rocco Revolution. “Our clients weren’t afraid of injecting some colour, and completely embraced the rich, jewel-like palette we put together for this renovation.” “The terrazzo tiles from Di Lorenzo Tiles were selected to reflect the name of the home, ‘Winter Rose’,” Kristin explains. “Terrazzo provides movement and depth that you can’t find in any other finish; it’s more like a piece of art. And – looks aside – it is such a versatile, resilient surface that is easy to maintain.”

2. ORGANIC Deb Saunders of DNA Design describes this ensuite design of hers (pictured left) as a natural organic style. “It’s a relaxing space that encourages slowing down and appreciating the moment,” says Deb. “We’ve kept it quite simple with a restrained muted palette. This enhances the textural elements of the design. We wanted the whole space to look soft, which is quite the challenge in a room full of hard surfaces.” “We achieved the overall look by using warm hues of cream and white on the walls and floors and all of the surfaces are in a matte finish. The white tiles are handmade which adds a subtle natural look to the room. The addition of brushed brass tapware and the fluted timber vanity in warm oak helped add texture and interest without overwhelming the space. The gentle lines of the organic shaped mirror again helped to soften the space while adding some fun.” adore home

BATHROOM STYLES

Terrazzo, mosaics and natural materials are the stars of this showstopping bathroom, which bears many hallmarks of mid-century design – with a coastal twist. “The handle cut-outs on the drawers are also typical mid-century details,” says interior designer Jess O’Shea. “We integrated the coastal element through the colours and finishes. Choosing oak, whites and warm stone finishes gave us the bright, calming coastal feel.” Renovating the space involved careful consideration. “The end result gave the room a more spacious feel and better flow,” says Jess. “I love the way the louvred window runs behind and below the benchtop. The continuation of the benchtop adds length to the room and the full-height window allows natural light and breezes to flow through.”

4. CLASSIC Working with the period features of this home, Lori Murray of March Twice Interiors has transformed the main bathroom of the house into a sophisticated space.

“Restoring original features like the entrance door and the existing window in this bathroom, and layering in materials and details that are elsewhere in the home – such as agedbrass detailing, natural stone, and traditional or handmade elements – helps to create a consistent story throughout,” she explains. Lori’s favourite feature is the handmade Moroccan tiles in dusty blue, complemented by the walls and vanity painted in Porter’s Paints ‘Dark Newport Blue’.

5 . R E T R O D AY S PA Tasked with converting an existing powder room and robe space into an ensuite, interior designer Carmel Wylie of GIA Renovations incorporated these retro-inspired tiles, which complement the 1970s home’s Californian vibes. “I love using them because they are available in a large range of beautiful colourways and are by an Australian company, so samples and access to the tiles is easy. I wanted to make the floorspace feel bigger, so I ran the tiles halfway up the wall – this also helps with maintaining a clean shower space.” “This renovation is the perfect blend of classic and modern, bringing new life to an old space and creating a unique and stunning environment for our clients to enjoy,” says Carmel. 16

6. MOD-MED This ensuite embraces modern Mediterranean style via the use of luxurious limestone. “We wanted to create a warm and organic atmosphere, making it feel like you’re at a resort,” says homeowner Ashley Rendell of Sage & Cove. “The natural limestone feature tile has warm tones and colour variations, which are beautifully revealed by the sunlight that filters through the skylight. The tiles add to the luxurious feel of the bathroom.”

Louise and her husband Steven spent many weekends completely overhauling their storage shed to create an inviting studio. Louise, a photographer and stylist, was in need of a space where she could photograph and style clients’ products, and so set about transforming their backyard shed. The couple laid the flooring by hand, panelled walls, painted, tiled, wallpapered and styled the space. “I wanted to create a warm space for myself and guests. All I had was a feeling in mind for the space, and I simply set about selecting finishes and textures that complemented each other tonally. Keeping in mind that it is a photoshoot space, things had to be interesting but also simple enough to accommodate all styles of products,” Louise says. For Louise, the most transformative change was the new flooring. “For the first time it felt like a real living space,” she enthuses. Her top tip for anyone thinking of renovating their shed is to think about heat. “The hardest part of working in a shed space is plastering walls internally, because sheds externally expand and contract with the heat. Give plenty of thought to how the internal walls and roof lining are constructed – using feature finishes can help hide the shift,” she adds. “Cooling and heating are also something to keep in mind – make sure you can keep air moving inside a shed by opening windows or installing air conditioning or fans.” Located on the north side of Brisbane, the studio is now available for other creatives to hire and create magic in.

It’s hard to fathom that this countryside home, complete with missing roof is now a beautifully restored home. Josh and Jenna have completely transformed this space, embracing soft pastels for their girls’ joint bedroom, drawing inspiration from the 2023 Dulux Colour Forecast Balance palette. The end result perfectly capturing the balance between playful and modern, whilst also complementing the beautiful heritage features of the space. “The rooms in the heritage part of the home have such a beautiful grandeur and we felt that the sophisticated dusty pink shade of Dulux Mornington was perfectly complementary to the heritage features of the home and the playfulness that we wanted to achieve within the space,” says Jenna. Completely enveloping the space in colour, Josh and Jenna created a seamless blend from the walls to the floor. “We love that the wall colour matches the skirting, it allows the generous space and fit out of the room to shine, yet feels grounded against the white ceiling. The floor to ceiling curtains also showcase the height of the ceiling upon entry to the room and visually softens the rendered walls and oak flooring,” says Jenna.

When Nat Spadavecchia outgrew her workspace on the dining table, she set about converting her garage into a studio. “I didn’t want it to just be a work-from-home office; I wanted it to be a bit of a retreat for me and also act as a guest bedroom when we needed it,” explains Nat. “So, we decided to split the space into an office, guest bedroom and Pilates workout zone.” It wasn’t easy though. Thanks to its poor construction and termite-ridden timber, the whole garage ultimately had to be stripped back to the slab. “We built it again using the same footprint and pitched roof, but adapted the floorplan, placement of doors and windows, and the roof space to maximise what we could do with the studio. We added a mezzanine to one half of the studio that allows us to store large, bulky items out of sight,” says Nat. “I think one of the most transformative things we did, other than moving the position of the small window and adding in two large double French doors, was painting the exterior black as a contrast to the light interior.” Her tip for anyone wanting to convert their old shed or garage is to be intentional with the outcome and stay true to your original vision. “Pull your ideas together on a mood board and sit on it for a while before settling on the final design. Once the design is locked in, try to stay off Pinterest or other inspiration sites, as you can end up getting overwhelmed with too many ideas,” says Nat.

Looking to renovate her dated kitchen, this homeowner engaged the services of Just In Place. “Previously the kitchen was much smaller, and in an enclosed space. It was dark and uninviting,” says designer Galit Eskinazi of Just In Place. “We have opened up the space and created a walk-in pantry/laundry from the kitchen, with an external window that brings a lot of natural light in.” “Our customers can choose which services they would like to engage. Our services include design, renovation work, and all required fittings,” explains Galit. “We always start with a lengthy visit at the client’s house, where we can see important details, such as the location, natural light, and the style of the house. We then come up with a kitchen layout that will be efficient and beautiful. From there, we move into the finer details, such as colours, finishes, internal configurations, and stone selection.” “We used Murobond ‘Cactus’ on the island in this kitchen,” says Galit. “The homeowner loves the colour palette, which reflects the leafy suburb she lives in.”

HOME TOUR

When Bec Van Roosmalen discovered a pair of 100-year-old antique Chinese elm doors, she knew she had to incorporate them into her renovation – she just didn’t know how yet. Her family had outgrown their threebedroom, one-bathroom red-brick home and had begun transforming it into a spacious, light-filled four-bedroom, two-bathroom sanctuary featuring earthy hues. “I’ve always been drawn to warm colours, and I love colours from nature,” she says. “I knew I wanted to incorporate more green and other colours to create a textured, organic vibe.”

The original lounge room was transformed into a tranquil main bedroom, while the tiny galley kitchen became a minimalist laundry. A gracefully curved, convex-panelled wall in the hallway connects the old and new parts of the home, and the smooth lines continue into the kitchen where the stone island and kitchen bench feature complementary curves, this time in timber convex panelling. The Chinese screen doors found their forever home between the kitchen and butler’s pantry, forming a distinctive showpiece.

A rear extension was added to provide the extra space that Bec, her husband Nathan and their two young sons craved, housing a bright, modern open-plan kitchen, living room and dining area flowing out to a timber entertainer’s

Nathan, a lawn-care expert, was responsible for the lush landscaping surrounding the exterior, but the interior was all down to Bec’s vision. “I chose all the materials, finishes and colours for every room in the house, including the outdoor deck, BBQ and pool area,” she explains. “I also did the styling, using a mixture of modern textured pieces combined with op-shop finds.” Bec had previously renovated a townhouse on a tight budget, but this was her first major project, and she learnt some lessons along the way. “Double check all boxes when they arrive to make sure you’re getting exactly what you ordered!” she cautions. “And trust your gut on the things you like and are drawn to, regardless of what’s on trend.” Learning how to advocate for yourself is the key to a successful renovation, Bec says. “Keep in regular communication with your builder and tradespeople about how you would like things finished, and don’t be afraid to ask for what you want – politely, of course.” She’s smitten with the entire house, but it’s the undeniably character-filled kitchen that makes Bec’s heart sing: “The feeling I get every time I see the antique Chinese doors paired with the cabinetry and stone benchtop is pure joy.”

Drew and Hannah Mansur breathed new life into this endearing inner-city cottage, creating a contemporary family home that’s intriguing from the street and dazzling once inside. When Drew Mansur knocked on the door of a salmon-pink cottage in Sydney’s Redfern, he hoped the owners would agree to sell him their house. Drew and his wife Hannah had renovated in Redfern before, and they were keen to do it again – this time to build a family home to live in with their three young daughters. “I don’t think anyone would describe Redfern property as cheap these days, but the convenience factor won us over,” says Drew, who is the co-founder of TileCloud and tapware company Yabby. “We’re happy to work with a little less space and have everything we need on our doorstep.” Just how little space are we talking? The block is a cosy 157m² and the home’s frontage takes up the entire 4.8-metre width of the site, which widens at the back to 6 metres. Drew and Hannah were in luck; the owners, who had themselves lovingly updated the home’s interior in the 1970s, were willing to sell. Deciding on an architect for the project was similarly serendipitous: “There were a couple of beautiful homes in the area that Han and I both really liked, and when we looked them up on Council’s records, they happened to be by the same architect, Thodey Design – so we knew straight away they were our team.” In keeping with heritage regulations, the renovation retained the facade of the original cottage and repeated its form in the shape of its rooflines, windows and doors. The main bedroom now sits behind the old front door, which has been sheeted over from the inside. >

Small space tip

“When working with a small home, go for the minimum widths in things like doors and hallways. It might not be textbook ‘best practice’, but it gets the job done when space is tight.” - D R E W M A N S U R , H O M E OWN E R

An ingenious curved wall leads to a side entryway, providing privacy from the street. The home’s position on a corner block was a big drawcard for Drew and Hannah, allowing access from the side and rear of the block. “It meant that a garage was possible, but also we could really maximise natural light,” Drew points out.

>

And maximise light they did. “We went a bit wild and threw in as many skylights as we could,” Drew quips. One of them – above the ethereal suspended staircase – makes walking upstairs feel like an ascent skyward, while the skylights in the bathrooms play beautifully with line, form and scale. “We achieved these with a lot of creative building from the Heuvel Construction team,” says Drew, “and we leaned on the architect for functional placement, so as not to let in too much direct sunlight and cook the house.” A calming natural palette combined with ample sunlight gives the home a breathy and spacious feel despite its small footprint. “Our interior designer Kate Lawrence is largely responsible for the beautiful kitchen and bathroom layouts, and how the materials and colours used throughout the project all come together,” says Drew. Tussles with Council, plus building delays as a sodden Sydney battled through La Niña, meant that the project took nearly two years (12 months in council and 11 months under construction) – but the family is now happily ensconced in a home that they adore.

Danni’s top advice

“When renovating an older-style home, it’s important to appreciate the old bones and respect the character of the property. By enhancing some of the existing features, you can take the aesthetic to a new level, delivering something that is beautifully bespoke.” - DA N N I M O R R I S O N , I N T E R I O R D E S I G N E R

Before Wandering into the ‘Banadero’ apartment block at Cotton Tree on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast one lazy Saturday morning, Carissa and Nev Heath had no intention of buying. “We were killing time more than anything,” recalls Carissa. “But from the moment we walked in, we fell in love.” The unit was dated, but the couple saw huge potential in its beachside location and cool vintage features, so they snapped it up and briefed interior designer Danni Morrison to create a laidback and luxurious Airbnb. Renovating within an existing block meant that the floor plan and exterior features would essentially remain the same, but Danni worked cleverly and sensitively within the apartment’s constraints. “Having the assistance of an interior designer to mock up the space prior to beginning

the renovation was priceless for us,” Carissa points out. Danni’s approach incorporated bespoke fixtures and high-quality fabrics and finishes in a thoughtful design that caters to the needs of Airbnb guests. “Drawing inspiration from Carissa and Nev’s favourite colour, their appreciation of art and their love of Mexico, ‘Banadero’ is a collection of key elements like trending art pieces, custom tiles, and unique selections,” she explains. “Being a small three-bedroom unit, built in an era when cabinetry design and storage solutions weren’t at the level of importance that they are today, meant that maximising space and comfort was high on the agenda.” In the bedrooms, built-in robes were replaced with open shelving and lift-up storage to free up

space. “We also removed built-in shelving at the front door,” explains Carissa. “This was turned into lift-up bench storage for beach equipment and a drop-off area for guests’ belongings when they enter the apartment.” The laundry and bathrooms were gutted and remodelled with high-quality finishes. Custom encaustic tiles in green, teamed with white tiles and chocolate-brown grout, lend the spaces a nostalgic Mexican energy. Existing elements of the building were worked into the new design. Its distinctive hooded brown window frames, for instance, are echoed in arched doorways, pill-shaped bathroom basins, and the curved niche behind the dining space. The apartment’s ornate insect-inspired cornices were also left intact, Danni explains. “Who in their right mind would have the audacity adore home

to remove those gorgeous little beetles? Not me!” Strategic updates to the kitchen and living zone made it more spacious and functional. “We really wanted to provide enough seating and comfortable places to relax for up to six guests,” Carissa says. Removing a portion of the kitchen cabinetry opened the space; replacing it with a small woodgrain cabinet created a visual link between the kitchen and living area. Meanwhile, a new custom-designed furniture piece became the room’s standout feature. The addition of this multi-purpose raised bench was, Danni says, “the ultimate game changer for ‘Banadero’ – acting as a console table, desk, bar, or kitchen island overflow, depending on guests’ requirements”. “We also introduced the built-in seating area with niche shelving around the dining table for plenty of relaxing space,” Carissa adds. The renovation, which took place over five months, delivered a holiday apartment that’s as practical as it is beautiful. “The most important facet of the design brief,” says Danni, “was to create a space where guests feel warm, comfortable and relaxed, like they would at home, but with a sprinkle of luxury detail that you’d expect from a five-star hotel.”

backyard OASIS

A simple dream – a backyard pool – once thought impossible, has come to fruition in a spectacular way for one Thirroul family.

DESIGN + STYLING RACHAEL MIKLAS DESIGN + DETAIL CONSTRUCTION ICON PROJECTS / WORDS NICHOLA DAVIES PHOTOGRAPHY SHAW PHOTOGRAPHY

For Rachael Miklas Design + Detail’s clients, the backyard of their Thirroul home was a sticking point. In 2022, they worked together to update the home’s facade with great results – but the backyard was still in the back of their mind. While it was grassed, hedged and well maintained, the homeowners dreamt of having a pool out the back – something they thought wasn’t possible due to being in a flood zone. Not giving up on the dream, the clients decided to have a hydraulic engineer assess the site, which heralded good news and parameters for a pool. This provided the push to get cracking on creating a long-awaited backyard oasis designed by Rachael Miklas Design + Detail and built by Icon Projects. “The position of the pool was at the forefront of the space planning,” says Rachael. “Placing the pool close to the house with easy access was the instigator for the design of a new staircase from the rear veranda. “From here, we designed the shape of the pool, the arched wall nook and the poolside bench seat, flowing down to a sunken alfresco area with curved integrated >

seating and a retractable shade cover. “We specified white vertical fencing and curved cacti-filled garden beds to complete the space.” The striking plants included were chosen for their aesthetic as well as their ability to withstand full sun and the coastal elements typical of the north Wollongong suburb. “The pool splash zone was also considered so that the surrounding plants were given the best chance of survival,” says Rachael. The hero of the space – the arch seating at the end of the pool – is a direct nod to the interior of the house, where arches were used to create a Mediterranean vibe. Additionally, the repetition of curves throughout the yard softens the space and organically directs you around the various zones. Since the completion of this backyard haven, plans are underway to create a new main suite off the house to overlook the garden – allowing the clients to view and appreciate the oasis and much-loved pool even more.
