WINTER OASIS: How to Extend Your Patio Season

O

nce cooler temperatures arrive, many homeowners tend to pack up their patios. Luckily, with the ‘cozy’ ingeniousness, you will be able to enjoy your morning cup of coffee outside during the winter.

your family and friends for roasting marshmallows.

These tips will help you transform your backyard into a winter oasis in the midst of whipping winds and biting cold.

COVER IT

KEEP IT WARM Adding an outdoor heater is one of the easiest ways to stay comfortable on your backyard when the temperatures drop. From tabletop to full-size, there are many different types of heaters that can add ambiance to the space and keep your guests warm. Another amazing option to make your patio useful this winter is to install a fireplace or fire pit. In addition to keeping you warm, it will be great for activities such as gathering

ALL ABOUT HOME

Whether you choose a standard heater or fire pit, try to match it with your porch décor and create a relaxing atmosphere right outside your back door.

Keep your patio winter-proof with a proper coverage. For example, gazebos, canopy and pergola shield the backyard from wind, falling leaves or snow. With these retractable canvases, you can enjoy the outdoor view year-round.

LIGHT IT UP! As the days get shorter, and nighttime comes earlier, we tend to head indoors. However, a properly-illuminated patio changes that habit. Depending on the design of your space, you can create tiki-style lighting or install overhead appliances. If you have a deck, consider stringing lights

around the structure to make your space look inviting and fun!

CHANGE THE DECOR Set the mood that will offer you a mental break from the house. For instance, the minimalist Scandinavian design can give your patio a fresh look without making it look cold. This includes a light colour palette, natural materials, such as wood, and small elements such as pillows with a simple geometric pattern.

STAY ACTIVE There is a range of things that can take place right at your back door. Turn your patio into a signature spot for enjoying your morning coffee, newspaper or even watching a TV. You can even invite your friends for an outdoor brunch. Getting a bunch of bodies together should keep everyone warm – and if not, you can always warm up by escaping inside.

WINTER-PROOF. PREPARING YOUR HOUSE FOR COLD WEATHER

W

inter is around the corner, which means it’s time to start thinking about how to protect your house from any potential damages that the winter might bring. Yes, it’s a lot of work, but taking care of it now ensures you avoid any snowy mishaps or water damage and keep your house happy throughout the cold season. Here are a few things you can do to get your home ready for the winter.

CHECK YOUR HEATING AND AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM Before temperatures plunge, consider changing your filters and inspecting the system by a reliable HVAC contractor. Have the contractor ensure your heat is going to work whenever you need it. It is much easier to find a problem in the moderate temperatures than it is to find your system dies on a freezing winter day.

INSPECT YOUR WINDOWS AND DOORS FOR LEAKS Ensuring your windows and doors are properly sealed will help you keep the heat.

Check whether you need to replace the weather-stripping around windows and door frames. In order to prevent heat loss, you should also check for drafts and cauls inside and out where it applies.

INSPECT YOUR FURNACE AND CHIMNEY Due to your fireplace, chimney and heating equipment are some of the main causes of home fires, they should be inspected and maintained annually. Before you start building those warm fires, ensure the chimney and vents are clean and in impeccable condition.

CLEAN YOUR GUTTERS Clean your eaves out if leaves, dirt, sticks and any other debris. Clogged gutters can cause household leaks because they stop the draining of rain and melting snow.

CHECK YOUR TREES If you have any branches up against your property, trim them away from your house and electrical wires. That will help you avoid your house damage and power troubles.

There can be units for your cup, laptop and newspaper. The bumpers should be high enough to prevent the dishes from falling and, in case you suddenly spill your coffee, they will keep the liquid inside the tray. Handles on either side are great for easy carry. The legs can be foldable or fixed. Foldable legs make the table more mobile and versatile so that it can be easily folded into a tray. Styles with fixed legs, on their turn, are much more stable, which is important with a non-smooth surface of the bed. Additionally, there are tables with adjustable legs.

MORNING GLORY: TABLES That Bring Everything to Your Bed

Depending on your personal preference, you can go for traditional options including normal wood such as oak, cedar or mahogany or eco-friendly materials such as bamboo and seagrass. If you are looking for a clean minimalist design which is super easy to maintain, consider getting an acrylic or plastic bed table. Whether you are looking for a table to lounge, get your work done or have a perfect breakfast, now you should be able to choose an ideal option to satisfy all your needs.

W

hile for some people, their morning is just the beginning of the day, for others it is a ritual: pleasant stretching, a fiveminute run and perfect cup of coffee. Admittedly, sometimes it feels particularly nice to lie down for a longer time, just dreaming, thinking and‌ having a breakfast right here, in a warm cozy bed. Therefore, it will be very useful to infuse more comfort and style into the morning meal with a perfect bed tray. Indeed, bed trays are super versatile. For example, today, a combination of a breakfast tray and laptop bed table has become very popular. The construction of a bed table is quite simple: a tabletop is connected to the supporting legs. Meanwhile, it is worth to mention some of the unique features. As for the tabletop, it is the epitome of the designer’s imagination. It can be made from simple plywood, or it can display elegant hand-forged patterns, mosaic panels, tinted glass and other elaborate details.

5 Tips to Make Your Bedroom More Relaxing

ou deserve to rest in a room that is comfortable and luxurious. What if not your bedroom is a place to rest after a long day at work? Therefore, it is worth to invest money and effort in designing the resting place bedroom to perfection. If you want to make sure that you have a bedroom that is a perfect combination of aesthetics and comfort, then you need to understand that luxury and splendour is not just about buying the most expensive bedding items and accessories. Here are a few important tips that you can use when creating a comfortable and aesthetically pleasing bedroom.

SELECTING THE COLOUR PALETTE The entire look of your furniture and accessories will mainly depend on the colour scheme that you choose. There are plenty of different colour palettes to choose from. Want to create a vibrant atmosphere? Then

8

go for bold colours such as orange, blue and pink. Wish to keep things soft? Then stick with the neutral colour scheme. Neutral colours such as beige, white and brown are an excellent choice because they are timeless. They are easy to decorate and upgrade. Significantly, changing the colour scheme of the room is the easiest and most affordable upgrade.

GETTING A LUXURIOUS BED The bed is the focal point of your bedroom and is responsible for your healthy sleep. Hence, it is important that you choose your bed carefully without compromising your comfort. Ensure that the bed fits you perfectly. Use duvet and pillow protectors to keep the bed hygienic and looking fresh. The protectors are easy and affordable to update so you can change them as often as you like to maintain a fresh look.

UPDATE THE LIGHTING If you aim to create a cozy and rich atmosphere in the bedroom, then you need to make sure that you have the right type of

e-mail: aahtoronto@gmail.com

lighting. Update the lighting, and you will be able to take the look of your bedroom to a new level. Altering the lighting is an affordable way of refreshing the look and atmosphere of the bedroom. As an option, you can use the lighting fixtures as decoration. They include decorative lamps and candles, for example. Consider getting more than one source of lighting in your room so that you can change the mood according to your needs.

PLANNING In order to have a luxurious bedroom, ensure it is uncluttered. Planning and organizing are critical for creating a cozy bedroom. Make sure that there is enough storage for you to keep the bedroom neat and tidy.

FINAL TOUCHES When you have taken care of the basics, add the final touches. Get accessories that will make the room comfortable as well as visually pleasing. Small things like fresh flowers, mirrors, photos and art pieces can make the bedroom look luxurious and elegant.

TROPICAL GIFT: BAMBOO IN YOUR HOME DECOR other amazing properties. For example, due to its hygroscopicity, the material absorbs moisture perfectly. At the same time, it is not so prone to rot, even when completely in water or mud, surrounded by various microorganisms. Apparently, the strength and incredible resilience come from the bamboo’s natural capacity to withstand any natural forces it is exposed to. The bamboo’s fibres that come from grasslike plants are rapidly-renewable natural resources. Bamboo stalks need about three years to mature and be ready to harvest. In addition, they grow wild without replanting.

N

owadays, natural materials are becoming increasingly preferred by designers. A fastrenewable material, bamboo has long been one of the most attractive choices due to its sustainability, as well as original and natural aesthetic. Of course, along with the eco-friendliness, the bamboo’s popularity results from many

10

ALL ABOUT HOME

When it comes to the interior of your house, bamboo offers a variety of solutions. It has a rich colour palette and can be successfully used in the finish of the ceiling and walls. Aside from the warm and unique aesthetic, you can achieve greater sound insulation. Bamboo logs can add a tropical flavour to your terrace or windows, creating the additional privacy. They are very versatile in styles and colours and easy to maintain. Not to mention decorative bamboo panels that will work great as unique dividers between the rooms.

Of course, bamboo is considered to be one of the best hardwoods for flooring. Durable and strong, bamboo floors will create a fresh and natural look of the house. Furthermore, you can use bamboo as an accessory to decorate your bedrooms, dining room and living area. For instance, try infusing bamboo elements into mirrors or any furniture piece made of glass, such as a table. Another way to introduce bamboo into your decor is to use it as a contrasting element on the countertop of the kitchen. In a word, being an eco-friendly material, bamboo not only gives you an opportunity to express your environmentally-minded attitude but it also helps you create a welcoming and naturally-looking space that is easy to maintain.

YOU’RE SO VAIN: Finding the perfect vanity for your tiny bathroom by Sara Bederman

S

mall homes are a common subject of the designer’s scrutiny and solution - particularly with the proliferation of downtown condos and townhomes. How do you make a big impact in a small space? You’ve got to go the extra mile to make the most of every square inch. This means every furnishing and fixture has to count. Your bathroom is no exception. A small bathroom doesn’t have to fall short on style or storage. The right vanity can go a long way to meeting both demands. Here are three considerations when shopping

for a perfect vanity that satisfies those big ‘small-space’ cravings.

space, the scope of work and timeline for completion, and the cost.

1

2

Size matters. It’s not the size of the bathroom that counts, it’s how you use it, right? Consider the vanity’s height and depth in relation to the room, and how you use the space. Particularly in compact bathrooms, you’ll want to pay close attention to factors such as door swing, the location of the toilet and tub, and the general flow of traffic. Along with vanity dimensions, come some other technical considerations. Where is the plumbing located? Do you require a single or double sinks? How will the faucet be mounted? It’s always best to consult with a professional contractor who can advise you on what’s possible in your

e-mail: aahtoronto@gmail.com

Out of sight, out of mind. The type of bathroom you have will dictate which storage system will best meet your needs. A powder room has minimal storage requirements, while an ensuite or a busy family bathroom calls for greater storage, organization and efficiency. For small bathrooms that see a lot of action, consider installing a vanity cabinet which is perfect for tucking away towels, toilet paper, tissue boxes, and perhaps a drawer (or an under-counter caddy!) for each family member to store personal items.

Styles for miles. Some see a small bathroom as a design challenge. I view it as the perfect opportunity to make a statement.

Since the space is limited, the few fixtures you have - including the vanity - need to be high-impact. Select a vanity style that stands out to you, either for its materials, shape, style or another unique detail that sets it apart. Small but sweet! laborious to renovate. So when it comes to your small but sweet bathroom, it’s definitely worth the splurge.

I’ve designed more than a few small but sweet spaces of all kinds. The key to a great room, regardless of its size, is filling it with the things you love; furnishings, finishes and accessories that speak to you. One benefit of having a small space is that they’re typically less costly and less

Growing Up With Style – Family Friendly Living Today

W

ith a sports-team size family of little ones running around wreaking havoc on whatever they find in their path, I often find myself standing in the midst of this beautiful chaos thinking “this is why we can’t have nice things.” From the shot glasses pulled out of the heirloom curio cabinet and hidden throughout the house to my parents’ pristine solid wood tables littered in watermarks and scratches. They show more wear in two years than in the past 20. That leaves me wondering, do we just not care about our stuff anymore?

14

ALL ABOUT HOME

When I was growing up, my parents’ nicer furniture lived in its own roped off room, and we weren’t allowed to enter it under any circumstances. A room that remained off-limits and reserved for special occasions was never something I wanted, but our mother’s methods did keep those gorgeous pieces in tip-top shape! Nowadays though, we all want to use all of our spaces in our homes. We have free-range children who leave traces of their daily journeys behind as evidence of new discovery and growth. Big box stores like IKEA have built their entire marketing scheme on the notion that we want to love our home, all of it.

e-mail: aahtoronto@gmail.com

If we buy their build-it-yourself coffee table for under $100 we don’t feel so bad when our kids ultimately destroy it because it didn’t cost that much, to begin with. However, as a designer and mom who spends her life sourcing and purchasing beautiful things day in and out for everyone else, this is not a concept I’m entirely comfortable with anymore. We have a stigma in our heads that we need to wait for our children to grow up before we can buy what we want for our homes, but I don’t believe that to be entirely true. Take upholstery, for example, there are so

FOR ADVERTISEMENTS CALL (416) 477-6107

many technological advances in fabric that you don’t have to buy everything in vinyl or bonded leather just because it’s easy to wipe clean. You can now get that beautiful patterned fabric that you’ve wanted on your accent chair because it’s treated with an inherent stain and water repellent (like Crypton or Alta for example) that makes it durable and aesthetically pleasing. So go ahead and let the kids eat their ice cream on it without worry. As for the bathroom, companies like Victoria + Albert are now providing inspirational designs made from ENGLISHCAST®, a unique blend of Volcanic Limestone™ and high-performance resins for their tubs and sinks, making them easily wipeable, and scratches can be easily polished out, lasting a lifetime. Quartz counters from companies like Quartz Master and the popularity of handscraped or oiled hardwood floor finishes hide dirt and wear better than the natural stone counters and polished floors that used to be the norm. All of these may cost a little more upfront than some other options, but there is something to be said for investing in quality when you buy the best, you’ll only cry once!

A balanced mix of contrasting periods and styles ●

● Neutral background colours

Modern objects easily mixed with objects of past eras. ●

Furniture patterned in stripes, zigzags and circles. ●

● Vertical lines, niches, rounded corners

Antiques or pieces with sentimental value ●

Oriental bedspreads and rugs, decorative pillows in a saturated range of colours ●

● Decorative details that combine differ-

ent objects in the interior To dress your house in the eclectic style, try to harmonize seemingly disparate elements, textures and colours while keeping the unique appearance cohesive. Before you purchase a decor for your room, decide where each piece of furniture will go. It is better to avoid purchasing furniture or any decorations in sets. Even though it seems easy, there’s a risk to make your house look like a showroom. The great solution is to buy pieces for your interior when you travel, collecting elements inspired by different styles and cultures. In reality, people who love an eclectic style tend to be travellers who are creative and not afraid of experimenting.

An Eclectic Vibe of Your Interior

o you like to see a mix of styles in your home? Perhaps you can’t decide whether your favourite decor is traditional rustic or edgy modern. In this case, you will likely enjoy decorating your house in an eclectic style. The unique aesthetic that came from the fine arts and architecture doesn’t commit to any specific style and allows you to do your own thing.

18

ALL ABOUT HOME

An “eclectic” person would choose a few decorating styles and borrow the favourite elements to decorate their houses. It might sound like throwing all things together, but it’s not. The eclectic decorator knows precisely how to add intrigue to the interior by incorporating rough and smooth textures so the entire home looks stunning. Here are some common characteristics of decorating in eclectic style:

5 WAYS TO USE GEOMETRY IN INTERIOR DESIGN

2. THE LAYOUT OF YOUR SPACE While this one might see, obvious, it goes far beyond just placing things where they fit. There is a unique aesthetic quality that’s achieved through the use of geometry. You may desire to have chairs set in a circle or distinctive window attributes framed or utilized as focal points in the room. When a room is laid out rightly, natural synergies take place, and you instantly become more productive.

3. THE DÉCOR OF WALLS AND ROOMS Obviously, a room’s décor is one of the key portions of the house, and geometry plays a crucial role in the planning procedure. Even though the style and design of the decorative components do matter, the shape of them can also be used when deciding which pieces will look perfect. Even the shapes that are used in the patterns of furniture along with other fabrics within the space play an integral role in determining whether they will be a great fit for the room or not.

4. SIZING OF DIFFERENT ELEMENTS Basically, every interior designer takes measurements of a room before they start working, and the overall size of the space is just one measurement which comes into play.

5. PATTERNS AND THEMES

W

hen it comes to interior design, it goes hand in hand with proportions. While to some people this appears naturally, to others, not really. Moreover, the majority of people does not even realize how often they use geometry is designing their homes. Here are five “geometrical” tricks designers use:

1. THE GOLDEN RATIO As you know, mathematicians have put together a ratio of proportions that most people throughout history have discovered to be aesthetically pleasing, and often this

22

ALL ABOUT HOME

ratio is used within the interior design. Your rooms might even have been designed according to the ratio, and you don’t even realize it! There is a number of architectural works that were designed according to the golden ratio: the Parthenon, the Notre Dame de Paris in France and St. Mark’s Basilica in Italy. Many artists have also used the golden ratio in their works. In interior design, the ratio is generally broken down to 60 per cent neutral colours, 30 per cent furniture in dark colours, 10 per cent accents in a warm colour palette, 5 per cent of accents in bright colours such as red, and only a touch of cooler hues such as turquoise or blue.

e-mail: aahtoronto@gmail.com

Geometry is also quite important with regards to choosing patterns or themes in a space. A very smooth space will just seem to be broken up if a square element is added. This could cause an unsettling feeling that cannot necessarily be explained. Ultimately, interior designers are more than just artsy individuals with an eye for colour and style. They are mathematicians with incredible geometrical skills, whether they realize it or not. Many people might not even realize how much geometry exists in their lives and particularly in their environments. Many things that are aesthetically pleasing frequently have a geometrical explanation of why people think they are. Of course, you can always take a professional advice on how to use geometry in interior design so that it creates a warm and inviting environment you will enjoy.
