6 TIPS FOR SPRING POND MAINTENANCE

pring pond maintenance can be a big job, but it’s not too bad if you know what you’re doing. And now’s the time to get prepared. Whether you need to vacuum sludge from the bottom of your pond, change the water, or clean out the pond pumps, you can do it all while keeping your fish safe and sound inside.

other debris into your pond. If you leave all this debris in your water, it will decay into a food source for algae, which can pollute your pond.

How?

l Vacuum the bottom

Check out this complete guide to your spring pond maintenance.

l Remove dying plants

1. CLEAN YOUR POND The winter weather has probably tossed a lot of dead leaves, broken branches, and

ALL ABOUT HOME

When cleaning your pond, make sure you include these steps: l Remove leaves and other debris (it may be helpful to use weed razers)

l If you have any pots in your pond, give them a quick scrub If you notice any blue-green algae in your pond, you must carefully remove it right away and take preventative measures

to avoid blue-green algae growth in the future.

When Should I Start Pond Maintenance? Your pond is ready to clean as soon as the ice melts. If you live in a warm location and your pond doesn’t freeze during the winter, you should clean your pond when your fish become more active.

2. CHECK THE POND PUMPS While you’re cleaning, you’ll want to give your pond pumps a look over. Pond pumps need to be in good condition at all times, so make sure there’s nothing stuck inside that could cause a clog.

ammonia when your pond needs it, your fish could get sick or even die.

Remember, you shouldn’t turn on your pond pump if the water is under 50F. So if your pond temperature gets lower than that during the winter, you need to turn it off.

kH Levels

If your pond temperature doesn’t get below 50?F during the winter, you will probably need to run your pumps through the entire season. It’s especially important to check pumps if you’ve been using them during the winter.

3. CHECK YOUR WATER If your water quality isn’t where you want it to be, you may need to do a partial water replacement. This means draining out 50% to 70% of your water and replacing it with cleaner water.

4. ADD HELPFUL BACTERIA Some bacteria is necessary for your fish pond to develop healthily. This will create a natural biological filter in your fish pond. But you shouldn’t add any of this bacteria until your water temperature is above 50F.

Don’t worry about your fish or plants. You can replace the water at the same time you drain it. This will require using the right bacteria, and we’ll talk about that next. When you’re checking your water, look for these things:

It is completely safe for your fish and plants, as well.

Temperature

5. CHECK THE HEALTH OF YOUR FISH

pH Levels This really depends on the kind of fish you have in your pond, but you’ll probably want your pH levels to be as close to 7.3-7.7 as possible. Keeping track of this level is important. If you don’t add ammonia or decrease

ALL ABOUT HOME

At the start of the spring, make sure your fish are healthy. If they do seem unhealthy at first, don’t get too worried. They will start to perk up and look better once you begin feeding them. But make sure you don’t feed them too early in the season. Don’t overfeed them, as well. Any food the fish do not eat will add nutrients to the pond. This may sound good, but it will encourage the growth of algae, which is something you don’t want.

e-mail: aahtoronto@gmail.com

You Don’t Need to Feed Your Fish Remember, your fish don’t need to be fed at all, so don’t get hung up on the food issue. They will eat what the pond naturally produces. Bigger fish may need more food than smaller fish, but only give fish food they can finish within five minutes.

6. ENJOY YOUR WATER FEATURE

If You Use Hose Water for Your Pond If you do have to change your water and use a hose to fill your pond back up, you’ll also need to prepare the water with a water conditioner. This will remove things like chlorine and ammonia from the water and detoxify heavy metals away.

You want your pond water to be roughly 65F, but a few degrees lower or higher is okay, too. If you live in an area that gets hot in the summer, waterfalls will keep the pond cool.

4

kH, or carbonate hardness, will help your filter function well. The higher kH level, the better. Things like air stones will reduce CO2 and improve your water hardiness.

If your fish still seem sluggish and unhealthy later in the season, check for ulcers, cloudy eyes, and white patches of skin. You can contact a professional and get antibiotic food for your fish.

After all the cleaning is done, have fun with the rest of your pond maintenance. You can decorate the edges with stones, add plants around it, or install a fountain feature. You can even add floating plants to the surface of your water. But make sure the water temperature is 69F before you add anything tropical. Do whatever will make you proud to show off your pond to your friends and family. Then, sit back and enjoy your beautiful fish pond.

Pond Maintenance Is a Hobby Remember, maintaining a pond should be something you enjoy doing. It’s all part of owning a fish pond. If you dread the start of spring because of pond maintenance, you may want to hire a professional pond cleaning company. A lack of passion may result in a poor cleaning job, and that could damage your pond and hurt your fish. Source: www.articlecity.com

esmerizing and calming, aquariums definitely add an exotic flair to any space. Luckily, there are a lot of ways to incorporate them into your interior for pure aesthetics. These ideas will inspire you to work either massive or small tank into your furniture or layout of your house.

ALL ABOUT HOME

Add an aquarium to your kitchen, and this room will barely need anything else in terms of decor. A fish tank built into cabinetry works great when you are short on space. If you are ready to sacrifice some countertop space, consider putting your aquarium there.

COFFEE TABLE Coffee tables with built-in aquariums look gorgeous and neat. They let you and your guests enjoy watching the fish during coffee time and conversation. Nowadays, you can find these unique pieces of furniture in any shape, size and style.

BEDROOM An aquarium in your bedroom will help you relax after a long day at work. Admittedly, a reef aquarium can easily replace a piece of wall art.

INSIDE THE FURNITURE Some furniture pieces feature a space designated for an aquarium. It can be a shelving unit or a modern longcase clock. So if you want to go really creative, this can be your option. While choosing a place for your aquarium, think somewhere you can easily see it - not only to enjoy the view but also to notice any changes in the fish’s behaviour or if they suddenly get sick. With this in mind, dark hallways would not be a great option.

The Little Things

W

hen it comes to your home, sometimes you know exactly what drives you crazy. Squeaky floors, noise transfer through walls, a dripping faucet, all these issues are visually and even audibly apparent. These “little things” may not seem to affect anything major, so, typically, we just keep fixing them if we can or living with them if we don’t think they can be fixed. It’s easy to ignore some but harder (and maybe not environmentally responsible) to ignore others. Little changes, however, can have a big impact.

FLOORS When you’ve moved to a home with floors that aren’t exactly your taste, the thought of a jackhammer may be the first that pops into your head (and then you may frantically shove that thought all the way down because a full renovation just isn’t in the cards right now). If your hardwood in good shape but just not the right colour, you may consider sanding it down and refinishing it to a tone of your choice. However, if issues with your floors seem more structural such as cracking or squeaking, you may not have considered that you can fix them. Squeak Knights by Silent Floor Solutions uses a unique technology which eliminates the source of the squeak, without damaging your existing flooring, leaving you with comfortable, silent floors. Homeowners with newborns being woken up by the sounds of squeaking footsteps would find this service a blessing!

PLUMBING Leaky faucets or toilets that bother you with each flush, may have issues that lie beneath the surface. I find plumbing services similar to repairing your car or getting your teeth cleaned: your mechanic (or dentist) can tell you something is wrong and if

you don’t know about cars or what’s really going on inside your mouth, you simply believe them. Professionally, we are sometimes asked about price matching plumbing quotes to reflect what our clients find in big box stores. Sometimes, a not-so-wellknown piece of information results in getting the higher volume at a lowered cost, but the quality of the fittings in the big box stores is not the same as what you’d find from your local plumbing supply. They may look the same, but they are not constructed of the same materials. In this case, you may save some money at the outset, but it will likely be spent down the road buying parts and paying for service. It’s important to trust the pros and weigh your options.

WALLS Having a laundry room on the second level is a nice feature in many modern homes. Not having to drag the dirty laundry down to the basement makes for an efficient laundry day, but not so wonderful when the baby’s room is adjacent. Insulating existing walls, applying acoustic wallpaper or even acoustic paint could help dampen the transfer of sound. The ever-popular painted

“shiplap” or rustic wood walls bring visual interest to your space and perform double duty by adding a layer and reducing noise transfer. Both are effective and don’t require a full renovation. When the little things feel more like big things, start small and you may just notice a big change in the way you feel about your home.

MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR WINDOWS THIS SPRING

Ostaco Windows & Doors

onderful windows! Is there anything more welcoming in a room? From a designer perspective, I doubt it. The source of light and views, windows become a natural focal point of any given space. In fact, when you ask people what they want most in their homes, “windows” and “views” will often be at the top of the list. It’s easy to understand why. Let’s start with the obvious. Besides being more functional, naturally lit spaces feel “warmer”. Everything looks more vibrant and alive in the light of day. When you’ve got great windows, rooms appear larger which works well for compact spaces. Even a small room is completely transformed by a window or two. If you’re short on windows, work with what you’ve got - and add mirrors into the mix. Position a large mirror opposite your window, and you’ve just visually doubled your window area and outdoor views! Choose a mirror that complements the overall aes-

thetic of the space and draws attention to its reflection. These days, windows come in a wide range of shapes, sizes and designs. Here are some things to think about when highlighting your windows. FINISHING TOUCHES: Think of the window trim as the frame containing a beautiful piece of art. You want something that will complement the view, but also be a feature piece on its own merits. A contemporary trend is painting the trim work in a dark shade of grey or black, as an alternative to the traditional white baseboards, window and door frames. Also, consider your window dressings. Are you leaning toward contemporary shutters

or blinds, or a classic curtain? When shopping, think about which type of window covering will best meet your needs for privacy. That will vary depending on whether this is a public space, like a kitchen and living room, versus a private space, like a bedroom or bathroom. Window hardware can also be a real statement piece, so be thoughtful in your selections.

a wide range of selections to choose from to suit your home’s existing aesthetic - or to give it a whole new one! ART & INSPIRATION: If you’re graced with a fabulous view, why not make it something to be seen? Rather than hanging paintings or wall art that will compete with your windows, let the views do all the talking. In fact, you can take cues from those views to make a cohesive, harmonious decor statement. This can mean a marine-inspired colour palette; organic “woodsy” textures; or an “urban-chic” aesthetic.

SIZE & SHAPE: As they say, go big or go home. If you’re adding windows, make them as large as allowed by the building code. Alternately, window walls have been trending for some time. This is a great way to maximize your views and natural light and offer direct access to the outdoors. Ostaco Windows & Doors (ostaco.com) has

If you’re ever short on ideas, all you have to do is look out those windows and let the inspiration in.

Sprucing Your House: Top 5 Spring Renovations

W

hen the winter is over, you are probably looking forward to running outside. However, before you rush out, take care of your home. You will thank yourself after you turn your house into a comfortable

and mood-boosting space for the warmer months. Perhaps, spring is the best time to invest in house renovations. Even though there’s no ideal way to renovate a home, this spring, we are happy to share these tips to transform your house in the one you’ve always dreamed about!

RECOVER YOUR BASEMENT Perhaps, the cold weather damaged your basement. Now is the best time to finish it. Whether you use your basement as a storage or you wish to transform it into a living room, ensure it is waterproof, insulated and ventilated properly. Remember that those investments will really help you to boost your house’s value.

RENOVATE YOUR BACKYARD Admittedly, your outdoor area needs some retouches as well. Maybe you need to buy new furniture or update insulation. Consider installing a new fence and upgrading the look of your deck.

IMPROVE YOUR DOORS AND WINDOWS Did the winter take a toll on your doors and windows? Is the caulking cracking in certain areas there? Don’t let your house lose heat or keep the cold air when it gets very hot. Ensure you replace the caulking and that your doors and windows are perfectly sealed. You might even want to update your front door to take the look of your house to a new level.

UPDATE YOUR KITCHEN Upgrade your kitchen space to create a cozy and inviting environment for your guests. Consider changing the tiles, adding custom storage or new cabinetry. Think of the ways to improve the functionality and style of your kitchen.

ADD A SPLASH OF COLOUR Since colours influence our mood so much, you might want to apply the fresh coat of vibrant paint or wallpaper in your house. Spring is a great time to brighten your property’s look! Consider getting a stunning piece of art for the interior or vibrant window treatment to make your home look spring-ready!

Layout Tricks: Incorporating TV Into Your Home

N

owadays, the television has become the focal point for most family homes. And, if you are unsure about placement and surrounding decor, we’ve got tips for decorating with televisions without compromising the visual balance of your interior.

FIND A POWER SOURCE Place the closest power source to where you want to locate your TV. Ensure there’s enough of a power supply to use any extras such as a Blu Ray player and sound system. Pay attention to the placement of your win-

dows to decide how much glare you will have on the screen.

LAYOUT Admittedly, it is generally best to place your TV on eye-level. This way, you don’t have to strain your neck or eyes by looking up or down for the screen when you are seated. Remember that nearly 4 feet off the floor is good. Then continue by multiplying the diagonal width of the screen by three to determine the ideal viewing distance.

PICK A FOCAL POINT Is your television your focal point? Then put it in the centre of the seating area. If there if

Don’t wish your TV to be a focal point? Consider placing it in a cabinet or an armoire with doors that you can close. Ensure you have or drill holes in the back for the cords to go through. Also, make sure your cabinet is easy to access if you have children that will be using it.

INTEGRATE IT Incorporate the TV into your décor with style! Consider putting it on a unit such as bookcase and arrange books, accessories and photographs around. To style it even more, surround it with an art wall of paintings or photos in black frames.

FLIP IT If watching TV isn’t your thing, but you still wish to have a small one, consider getting one that can be mounted under cupboards in the kitchen or den. Make sure you can flip it up when you need to do so.

5 ESSENTIAL THINGS TO DO BEFORE SELLING YOUR HOUSE

S

elling a home can be a long, stressful, and seemingly impossible process.

If you’re getting ready to sell your house and are feeling a little overwhelmed, keep in mind that millions of people sell their homes every year. So you’re far from alone in undergoing this challenging experience. If you’re getting ready to move and aren’t sure what you need to do before trying to sell your home, we can help. Here are five essential things to do before selling your house.

1. CUT BACK ON CLUTTER

20

2. GET YOUR HOUSE LOOKING LIKE NEW If you want to improve your chances of selling your home quickly, and for your asking price, you need to make sure potential buyers like what they see. After a few years, houses can begin to show signs of wear and tear that you may not notice. Walk through your home and note any repair work that needs doing. You should also inspect the exterior of your home. After taking care of any repair work that needs doing, it’s time to get cleaning.

First things first, it doesn’t matter how long you’ve been living in your current house — over time, you begin to accumulate a bit of clutter.

Selling your house is a big deal, so try to hire out a professional cleaning service if you can. They’ll have the tools and experience needed to get your home looking its absolute best for your potential buyers.

Your first step in getting ready to sell your home should be to try to cut back on the amount of stuff you have in it.

3. SET THE STAGE

By decluttering, you’ll be able to present potential buyers with a cleaner and more bare-bones version of your house.

Staging your home may not seem all that important, but it can help you sell your house faster and for closer to your asking price.

On top of that, by cutting back on the amount of stuff you own, you won’t have to worry about carting as much to your new home.

Try to take down as many personal photos as you can, buy a few throw blankets, and light a few scented candles to create the perfect welcoming atmosphere.

While you can stage your home yourself, there are professionals out there if you need a little help.

4. GATHER ALL YOUR PAPERWORK One often overlooked aspect of selling a house is all the documents that it already has tied to it. If you’re getting ready to sell your home, go ahead and gather up all relevant paperwork and put it all in a clearly labeled folder. You should set aside everything from the actual deed to the paperwork for any appliances you plan on leaving behind.

5. HIRE AN AGENT Finally, having the right real estate agent in your corner can make selling your home a much shorter and more manageable process. A local real estate agent already knows the ins and outs of the market, so it pays to do your research before hiring someone. Now that you know five things to do before selling your house, it’s time to get to work so you can move on to your next big adventure. Source: www.articlecity.com

BED Mood: Feel Happier by Simply Making Your Bed Each Morning

M

aking your bed in the morning might feel like a routine where you simply perform a series of motions - grabbing the sheets and folding them up and then folding the duvet cover down; smoothing and fluffing pillows, and Wa-lah! You are done. However, this basic routine can give

you more than just a neater- and prettierlooking bedroom. According to Best Mattress Brand, making your bed in the morning can have positive psychological benefits that affect you for the rest of the day. The company surveyed 1,000 people - 500 who regularly make their beds and 500 who don’t - and researched how that affected an individual’s overall

being. It turned out that nearly 80 per cent of the surveyed said they have a more productive day after making their beds, and about 90 per cent of them would recommend making your bed to others. About 70 per cent of bed-makers felt their day was great compared to only 50 per cent of those who left their beds without attention. Believe it or not, bed-makers happened to be twice as likely to say they are satisfied with their jobs than non-bedmakers were. In addition, people who make their beds each morning tend to have healthy habits. They are organized, motivated, healthyeating and responsible. And, sure, they always get a night of better sleep. Sounds persuasive enough to start making your bed each morning, doesn’t it?

Why It’s Worth Investing in Latex Mattresses?

L

atex mattresses are created to provide a healthy and comfortable sleep. Many studies show that a human needs about 7-9 hours of healthy sleep for normal functioning during the day. Today’s modern time became more active and people find it difficult to fall asleep at night. Daily challenges and problems have made sleeping tough and exhausting. Everyone knows that poor sleep makes us unproductive and moody. If you are already tired of sleeping on a poor quality mattress, it is time to invest in a latex mattress. Quality sleep requires a small investment. Spring mattresses usually last between 5 to 10 years. It means you need to change your mattress once in every 5 years. Therefore,

22

ALL ABOUT HOME

it is better to invest a bit more in latex mattresses, which could last from 25 to 30 years. As soon as you spend one night on this mattress, you will wonder what you have been waiting so long for the purchase. One of the main characteristics of the latex, the most desirable material for making the mattress is its support. As an environmentally friendly biodegradable natural product, the latex follows the contours of the body and provides comfort and superior support. It is ideal for those who have a back pain or need relief of the pressure on certain parts of the body. It follows the body in any sleeping position, supporting the shoulders and hip area. It is not surprising that orthopedists and chiropractors recommend latex as the best mattress making material.

e-mail: aahtoronto@gmail.com

People who suffer from asthma and allergies should not even think if they need to buy a latex mattress. Maybe the benefits to them are the greatest. The reason for this is that the latex is resistant to dust and mould. Its hypoallergenic nature does not contain any chemicals or toxic substances. Mattresses that are handmade in the latex mattress factory have 100% latex core, which means no springs. It is also good to know these mattresses are eco-friendly. They are good for you and your environment because they are made of natural material – a rubber tree. We often criticize our partner for bad sleeping. The main reason is the partner’s movements, which negatively affects the sleep of the other partner. Instead of switching to unnecessary conflict, it is best to go to a mattress factory that manually produces mattresses from latex. They are ready to explain the whole process of making your custom made mattress and will allow you to watch the process. Source: www.articlesfactory.com
