DEAR REA DERS, It may have taken a while, but it feels like society is finally taking notice of the damage it’s inflicting on our environment and is taking some steps to combat it. Of course, it is a mammoth task, but as individuals we should all do what we can to limit our personal impact. Our homes are a good place to start. Not only in terms of minimising our waste output and energy consumption, but also how we decorate our spaces and consider what we bring into our homes. The idea of living ethically is an ongoing theme for us at 91, but this issue we throw a spotlight on people and businesses who are aiming to lead the way in helping us create more sustainable homes as well as improving the lives of those involved in their manufacturing processes. We share styling ideas, shopping tips and thoughtful commentary on how to have a stylish home while respecting our planet. As always, I hope 91 Magazine brings you much enjoyment and inspiration, we love to hear your thoughts and see your pictures of the magazine in your home, so do share them with us via our hashtag on Instagram - #my91magazine. Happy reading! Caroline x

La-Eva STUDIO TOUR The studio space of Louise Canham is a visual and sensory representation of her range of ethical skin care products Words: Kay Prestney Photography: Cathy Pyle

9 1 M AG A Z I N E

15

Louisa Canham’s beautifully-styled and carefully-curated studio, situated next to a working saw mill in the rolling Oxfordshire countryside, is a feast for all the senses: a visual and olfactory delight where founder of organic skin care brand La-Eva works her alchemy. Entering up an old metal outdoor staircase into this almost magical place, one feels a lightness of spirit; soothing music plays in the background, incredible scents fill the air and the space is filled with wonderfully tactile, interesting pieces and foraged finds. It has been home to various artists over the last 20 years and many of their tools and creations still have a place here.

16

9 1 M AG A Z I N E

THE ROAD TO LA-EVA Louisa used to be a clinical psychologist and having gained an Oxford Doctorate at an early age, spent her 20s and early 30s in the field of child and adolescent mental health, working in a variety of settings such as hospitals, schools and prisons. It seems a stark contrast to her current working life and environment, and yet there are threads that bind the two, such as sensory work that went into the psychological approaches that Louisa used to help the troubled children and young adults in her previous job. Several years ago, Louisa made the decision to take an open-ended break from psychology and came to set up an artisan soap studio where she experimented with natural oils to create beautifully-scented cold process soaps. ‘It was fascinating and, on a personal note, therapeutic, to go from working in environments where the fluidity of the human condition was without measurables, to producing a physical product,’ she shares. There was no doubt a huge step being taken into the unknown for Louisa as she entered an occupation which starkly juxtaposed with her previous clinical and cerebral work. ‘I learnt through disasters,’ she laughs, sharing a funny story about a batch of lavender soap that looked like it contained dead ants! For the first couple of years Louisa sold her products in local markets around Oxfordshire and in due course embraced 5am Sunday morning starts to sell at Spitalfields market in London.

Talking Shop FO R E ST

Passionate about bringing plant life to homes, benefitting both air quality and wellbeing, Fran Bailey introduces Forest- a botanical paradise and leafy oasis in south-east London Words: Helen Martin Photography: Rachel Warne

9 1 M AG A Z I N E

When did you open Forest and what made you decide on your location? We opened Forest in 2013; the building is just one street down from our flower shop and originally the space was used as a combined flower workshop and plant shop. However, gradually, over the years the plants took over and the florists had to move out! What was the space like when you found it and how have you changed it? It was a mess. The roof needed replacing and skylights put in for a start, but we were lucky because the building had retained beautiful features from its origins as a bakery. There were stunning tiles on the walls, stone flag flooring and an old flour chute and baker’s oven in the cellar. What has inspired the design and layout of Forest? The design has been an organic process over the years and the inspiration comes from the form, texture, colour and beauty of the plants. We hang a lot of trailing plants from the ceiling, so it feels like you’re walking into a rainforest when you come inside. People say the shop has a European feel- I’m half Dutch so maybe that shows in the look and feel of the place. How would you like people to feel when they enter and wander around Forest? I want people to be inspired to recreate the look and make a green-filled sanctuary in their own home. I think it’s a space where people like to come and linger, to take time and enjoy the beauty of the plants. We are all plant geeks, so we love to answer plant care questions and chat with other plant enthusiasts. I want to show that despite being urban dwellers, we can still connect with nature by surrounding ourselves with plants. We also like to raise awareness of the mood-enhancing and health benefits of plants. It’s scientifically proven plants make us happier and healthier- they lift our mood, purify our air and reduce our stress levels. Do you have any favourite corners of the shop? On a hot summer’s day, I love the cool, damp mossy and fern-filled areas, in the shade near the sink. On a busy day, I like to be stationed by the potting table, matching plants with beautiful pots or filling terrariums. From where do you source, and what inspires your plant and product collection? My daughter Alice has a great eye and is always on the lookout for new products. For inspiration we visit nurseries, trade shows and the flower markets in London and Holland. We stock many Danish, Swedish and Dutch brands, but also like to sell products that are locally designed or made in South London, such as Conpot and Charlotte Grinling ceramics. What are the most unusual plants? Children love the really spiky, most lethal-looking cacti and are fascinated by the carnivorous plants, so we always try to keep a few show stoppers in stock just to keep them happy!

ANWEN PEGRUM HOME TOUR A renovation project became a journey of discovery when peeling back the layers of a 15th century longhouse

Like many house-hunters today, Anwen Pegrum first stumbled upon her future home online. Initially unconvinced that the property was right for her family, Anwen is thankful that she took the opportunity to take a closer look, ‘As soon as we walked in, I think we just knew it was the one,’ she says. Many of the original features of Downcross House - a 15th century Welsh longhouse - had been covered up over the years, and it took Anwen’s creative thinking to visualise the beautiful family home it could become. ‘When we first arrived at the house, the front door was UPVC! Can you believe it?’ Anwen recalls. ‘But we loved the old cottage character inside and the original features we could see. It has bags of character - I don’t think there’s a straight wall in the house! The stone spiral staircase literally stopped me in my tracks when we came to view it.’ Anwen and her husband Christian moved into Downcross House in late 2007, awaiting the imminent arrival of their daughter Martha, born a few months later. With their hands full, they were raring to go, and began renovation work as soon as possible. ‘We realised we’d have an uphill struggle to get it right, and 11 years later we are still planning new projects. I don’t think we’ll ever stop in all honesty!’ says Anwen. ‘But all the major stuff is done now, we are just revisiting the outside space, after our rush job when we first moved in.’ Located in the coastal town of Llanwit Major at the heart of the beautiful Vale of Glamorgan, Downcross House is around 30 minutes’ drive from Cardiff. Anwen feels they have got the balance just right in choosing this setting; ‘we are so lucky here to be well-connected yet have space to breathe. The house overlooks a pretty brook and field with horses, and we can walk to the beach in about 20 minutes,’ she says. ‘I love being out here, especially in the summer months, though I do still miss the city in the winter months!’
