DEAR REA DERS, I truly believe that our homes are where we should feel at our happiest. It is the one space where we have complete control, where our personalities can be reflected and where we can be relaxed and at ease. Styling your home should be fun, and the space around you should contribute to your happiness, so don’t take it too seriously, just as we shouldn’t take life too seriously. With that in mind, the loose theme for this issue is ‘playful’. Bright colour is of course one great way to add fun to a space, but it can be as simple as a whimsical illustration, a surprising collection or a characterful wallpaper. Children naturally inspire playfulness and creativity, so we explore some spaces and ideas related to kids and family, but equally, as adults, we must embrace the importance of play and finding delight in the everyday. I hope you find joy within these pages; words, pictures, people and spaces that make your heart smile, and inspire the child within. Why not get playful with your camera and snap some shots of our new issue (with our brand-new cover design!) and share with us online using our hashtag #my91magazine? We love seeing your images. Love, Caroline x

Kangan and Jonna STUDIO TOUR

A mutual love of colour, geometry and visual storytelling brought designers Kangan Arora and Jonna Saarinen together to share a work space at Bainbridge Studios, South-East London

Kangan and Jonna first met thirteen years ago as textile design students at world-renowned art college, Central Saint Martins. Kangan grew up on the plains of the Punjab, whereas Jonna’s early years were spent on an island in the Finnish archipelago. Both cultures embedded in the women a love of textiles, craft and colour, and later, after Jonna graduated from her masters at the RCA in 2010, it seemed a natural step for the two women to seek a shared studio together. Both needed the same screen-printing facilities for their work, so sharing a space and running costs made perfect sense. Their main criteria when searching for a studio was somewhere that was big enough to house their four-metre fabric screen-printing table, which was kindly given to them by Central Saint Martins when the school moved to its new building in King Cross. When they first moved in, they had just a single studio space that housed the printing table, but, as their respective design businesses have flourished, they have been able to take on a neighbouring space to create an office area too. The studio building itself is full of character as it was once an old dairy, and the two women have been lucky in securing a space within it that has a beautiful big brick wall and a skylight above their print table, flooding the room with light. They are surrounded by - and draw inspiration from - the other creatives who work alongside them at the Bainbridge Studios, with neighbours including artists, woodworkers, graphic designers, plus knitwear and menswear designers.

Gayle Mansfield HO ME TOUR Open-plan living combined with skilful use of colour and a love of typography create the stylish family home of print designer, Gayle Mansfield

Creating a practical family home that could evolve with their needs over time was at the heart of Gayle Mansfield and her partner Steve’s renovation plans. But it’s the couple’s design flair and love of graphics which makes this home something special - combining simplicity, humour, and clever use of colour. Gayle, Steve and daughter Edie moved into their three-bedroom Edwardian house in West Sussex six years ago. Back then, the bottom floor of the house was split into two reception rooms and a separate kitchen, but Gayle was keen to go open-plan, partly because she wanted to be able to keep her eye on her young daughter while she was cooking. The pair undertook a huge renovation project to give them the space they craved, opening up the kitchen and reception rooms, and adding bi-fold doors into the garden, which allows light to flood through the house.

Now that the couple’s daughter is older, they’ve discovered that one downside of open-plan living is the clutter of everyday life. The pair solved this problem by dedicating a couple of cupboards to store Edie’s toys and art supplies, a solution that enables them to maintain the Scandinavian-inspired minimalism that Gayle prefers. Gayle also acknowledges how the house has gradually changed, as their requirements have altered. She has recently relocated her workspace from the spare bedroom to a studio in the garden, and they are now busy transforming the room into a multi-functional space - for guests to stay, for one of them to work, or for Edie to hang out with her friends. Important layout decisions were made around the areas that have become the heart of the home - such as placing the dining table in the kitchen for easy and informal meals, and opting for a huge sofa that accommodates everyone, so they can all relax together. Design details Precise attention to detail is evident throughout the whole house, including in Edie’s room. A far cry from a typical child’s bedroom, Gayle has fused creative ideas with practicalities in her daughter’s room. One feature is the exposed brick wall; ‘This wasn’t necessarily intentional, as it was forced on us due to damp problems, but we love it!’ laughs Gayle. The texture of the wall contrasts beautifully with fresh white paint, white wooden floorboards and flashes of blush pink. Fun prints are displayed on the walls and on shelves, as in every room, and a pink neon light and pom-poms add a whimsical feel. When asked what changes they have made during the renovations, Gayle jokes, ‘What changes haven’t we made?!’ As well as opening up the downstairs, the couple also redecorated the entire house, adding window shutters and built-in shelving, installing new radiators and a wood burning stove, replacing the old kitchen, creating a downstairs toilet and utility room, and knocking down the wall separating the upstairs toilet and bathroom.

TALKIN G SHO P

Klin d 'oeil

Nestled within a quiet Parisian street is Klin d’oeil. Yellow on the outside, the shop is a rainbow of joyful colour on the inside. We chat to sisters Emilie and Virginie about their passion for independent design and the creative community

Words: Caroline Rowland Photography: Jemma Watts 9 1 M AG A Z I N E

29

How did Klin d’oeil come about? Emilie: Originally, we started off by running a market selling lots of designers’ work. I used to love making things like little dolls to sell, but in Paris at the time, there were no nice markets that were really well curated to sell your work, so we decided to start our own. Virginie was working in a children’s lifestyle store called Not So Big, so we were able to ask some of the designers whose work was stocked there to be involved, as well as creative friends. The event grew quickly, and we then we had a great opportunity to host it at Le Carreau du Temple - a large venue in the centre of Paris - and that was the start of big things. Three years ago, we decided we wanted to have a permanent place where we could continue to curate, as well as host workshops. I also had a child at this time and wanted to change the way I worked. Virginie had been working at Merci (the well-known concept store), and she decided to leave, so we could make a plan. Things happened quickly from there - Virginie left Merci in the August and we opened our shop in November! What’s in the name? Emilie: Klin d’oeil translates as ‘wink’, although the spelling is usually with a C – ‘Clin d’oeil’. The idea is to ‘have a look’ at the lovely objects. Also, we never choose things for the shop because they are from a famous designer for example, we choose them because they’re beautiful, we love them, and they please the eye. What is the concept behind the store? Emilie: We simply want to support independent design. We don’t go to events like Maison et Objet to source products, instead, every designer whose work you see here – we know them. We meet with the makers first, we learn their story and the history behind their work. For example, we stock Donna Wilson’s designs – we know Donna – she came here last year and held a workshop for us. It’s the same with all our designers. As well as the shop you also show artist’s work regularly. What kinds of artists do you exhibit? Emilie: It’s a mixture. It could be photographers, graphic designers, ceramicists or illustrators, for example. Again, we meet people and we get inspired to hold an exhibition of their work. Sometimes it’s only one artist, but other times we come up with a theme and we invite maybe four or five artists to take part. We will then show their work for a couple of months and sell it in store during that time.

30

9 1 M AG A Z I N E

You’ve recently opened a workshop space next door. What kind of workshops do you host? Virginie: Lots of different creative pursuits from embroidery, tapestry and punch needle to screen-printing, silk painting, terrarium making and spoon carving, plus some for children, too. The workshops are hosted by different designers, so it depends on what they come up with. The idea is to promote the makers, but the workshops also help to demonstrate the work that goes into the types of products we stock. It shows the relationship between time, skill, and price. We have lots of people who travel quite far to come to the workshops, even outside of France, which is great. What are your backgrounds? Virginie: I learnt the trade on the job. When I worked at Not So Big, I was responsible for the shop when the boss was not around. When I moved to Merci, my knowledge was really useful for them and I travelled to Japan, Milan, and Amsterdam to run pop-up stores for them. Emilie: I went to the National School of Applied Arts and Crafts (known as Olivier de Serres), where I studied textile and graphic design. I am generally the one with the creative ideas, while Virginie is much more business-minded and organised. We curate the shop together, and overall our different experiences mean we work well together. FOR FULL FEATURE, PLEASE PURCHASE OUR FULL PRINT OR DIGITAL EDITION VIA WWW.91MAGAZINE.CO.UK
