DEAR REA DERS, As children, we are frequently asked by adults: “what is your favourite colour?” My own daughter changes her answer on a weekly basis, and why not?! We should never be limited to just the one, and often it is the combination of two or more colours that brings inexplicable joy. My personal colour crush right now is pink, yellow and orange, as the cover of this issue pays homage to. As we grow up and start to express our personalities through our interiors, colour plays an important part of the process. It can evolve over time, perhaps with the seasons or as our tastes change, and experimenting with the use of colour can be lots of fun. Generally, most of us will have a colour style, as Jessica Rose Williams explores on page 40; perhaps you are drawn to bold, bright hues, or your preference is more on the muted scale? If you are struggling to work out what your colour style is, then I hope you will find inspiration amongst these pages - from the soft, contrasting shades in the home of illustrator Abbey Withington, to the warm, rich tones of designer Clare Nicolson’s space. Studio Cotton STUDIO TOUR

Describing itself as ‘a small creative business for small creative businesses’, Studio Cotton brings innovative marketing and community spirit amidst their pink and green oasis in Bristol’s historic quarter

“A very meandering route” is how owner Aime Cox-Tennant describes the pathway that led to establishing Studio Cotton - her branding and marketing agency. Studying genetics isn’t an obvious route into creative marketing and yet this is how the story began. A year into her science degree at Bristol’s University of the West of England, Aime became convinced that her future did not lie in working for a big pharmaceutical company, however her dissertation on medical communications sparked an interest in people and marketing. After a fast-paced decade in healthcare marketing and long hours working for large marketing agencies, Aime realised she needed to make a change for the sake of her body and mind. “I loved the marketing side of what I was doing, but hated the culture and felt burnt out by an industry that didn’t resonate with my values,” she explains.

Whilst taking some time to think about what the future might hold, Aime began helping a friend who had started a small business making performance cycling clothing; creating their website and helping to tailor their marketing for maximum impact on a small budget. After years spent working with large companies, Aime discovered that her true passion lay in helping small brands and creatives, “It took me a year to find my niche. I loved helping small businesses because I saw that I could have a big impact for them, which was so satisfying and rewarding.” FROM KITCHEN TABLE TO STUDIO SPACE “Working from home didn’t work for me at all. I spent too long watching television and getting distracted by household tasks,” shares Aime, with a smile. After renting a desk at a co-working space she moved to a tiny studio above a coffee shop, but soon found herself taking on more clients and needing more room. “I wanted to run workshops bringing people together to network whilst showing them what we could offer,” explains Aime. Without a suitable space, she teamed up with local collective Bristol Girl Bosses, running a series of workshops for them whilst scouring the city for a space to call her own. Six months later, despairing of finding what they wanted, Aime and her husband, Alex, who co-owns Studio Cotton and runs the legal, financial and technical side of their business, were eventually shown their current studio. Arriving at the building for the first time with the agent, it was far from love at first sight. “It looked terrible, there were accessibility issues and it was the epitome of an uninspiring office space with awful plastic carpet tiles, strip lighting and a warren-like lay out,” Aime recalls. The couple forced themselves to look for the positives, “It was a great central location on Bristol’s Corn Street, in a lovely Georgian building dating back to 1756 and there was potential for it to be flooded with natural light with lots of large windows and a beautiful lightwell feature. It occupied the whole of the third floor, so it had the space we dreamt of,” explains Aime. They decided to take the plunge, and after a frustrating four months of lease negotiations, on the night before Halloween 2018, they had the keys in their hands and the next stage of their creative adventure could begin.

PARQUET, PINK AND PLANTS “I spent a lot of time researching a studio layout which would encourage collaboration in a communal space, but would also include smaller rooms where people could put their heads down and concentrate without distraction,” explains Aime. The couple set to work, stripping the space back to its bare bones - which led to some wonderful surprises. “Some girls dream of getting married or owning a unicorn, but from a very early age I genuinely dreamt of owning a house with parquet flooring!” laughs Aime as she recounts the tale of spending hours, helped by a group of good friends, ripping up blue plastic tiles and scraping glue off the floor to discover a hidden, original, wooden parquet floor. This floor has been beautifully restored and is now a stunning statement feature, along with the unusual terracotta parquet floor unearthed in the hallway. This, accompanied by an abundance of plants, brings a wonderful greenhouse feel to the space. Just as exciting for Aime was the day they asked the landlord if they could have a key to a locked door, only to discover that beyond it lay a roof terrace which was included in their lease!

Whilst most of us spend a long time deliberating over paint charts, colour was one area for which Aime knew exactly what she wanted, “I felt strongly about creating an environment that visually echoed our brand identity, so that I could take images anywhere in the studio knowing they would immediately work in any of our marketing materials. This saves a huge amount of time and ensures our social media imagery is cohesive and on-brand.” The result is a beautiful, calm and inspiring series of rooms ranging from dramatic dark green corridors with a burrow-like feel, to blush pink spaces bathed in natural light. “I love pink. I dress in those colours, I like its femininity and nurturing feel, which is something I wanted to portray to my clients,” explains Aime. Studio Cotton is also home to a large number of plants, from small succulents to huge specimens that have become office characters with their own names, such as Veronica the Monstera. “I really enjoy caring for all the plants; the act of tending them is calming and mindful, a nice relief from the stresses of running your own business. There are so many brilliant little independent plant shops in Bristol, I often find myself picking up a new addition for our office,” says Aime.

Famous for its Sunday flower market, Columbia Road in London’s trendy Shoreditch, is also home to vintage furniture and industrial salvage store, Mason & Painter. The space is constantly evolving and is beautifully styled by owner, Michelle Mason, who tells us why the vibe and constant chatter of this busy shop is where she’s most in her element.

Hi Michelle! Can you tell us a little about yourself? I was born in Yorkshire and grew up on the edge of the Peak District. After school I studied illustration at Chelsea School of Art, followed by a Master’s degree in communication design at Central Saint Martins. I’ve been in London since university, and live in Hackney with my daughter, Marni, and Fox, the parson terrier. How would you describe Mason & Painter to somebody who has never visited? We’re a lifestyle store selling reclaimed and vintage furniture, salvage and glassware. The shop (once an upholstery workshop which served the booming furniture trade in Shoreditch in the 1880s) is on Columbia Road, which has a Sunday flower market and many of our customers are gardeners and plant enthusiasts looking for reclaimed pots and vintage jars. I met up with a friend from Paris the other day and she said that the first time she walked into the shop it felt to her like a cosy home. Customers often say they could move straight in. It’s a bit chilly in the winter, but I like that people feel at home here - and in fact every single thing is for sale. I’ve sold several counters and even the chair I was sitting on!

Does vintage furniture and salvage finds inspire the décor in your own home? Yes - re-using old furniture, doors and lights has always appealed to me, and in every home I’ve lived in there have been several vintage and reclaimed pieces. Styling the shop gives me a lot of decoration ideas that often inspire my home style, so I’m constantly editing and moving things around. It’s a compact purpose-built Victorian flat, a short walk from Columbia Road, and the main open plan living space has walls filled with vintage botanical illustrations, 1960s French school charts and a large mirror (my first degree in illustration means I’m a bit of a sucker for prints and posters). I have a mid-century Ercol sofa that I paid a neighbour £35 for, now covered in vintage fabric. My daughter Marni uses a marble topped pastry table for her desk, and I did ‘borrow’ a lovely vintage cafe table, which ended up staying for several weeks but I felt guilty and took it back to the shop. The shop’s decoration is echoed at home - I’ve painted the floorboards white and the walls dark, with a jungle of plants suspended from the ceiling - so it does have a slightly industrial feel, crossed with a greenhouse! Zoe Pearson HOM E TO UR

Mixing sun-bleached hues, 70s vibes, and an abundance of plants, Zoe Pearson’s light-filled London home is a blend of contemporary design and vintage gems

Light is always welcomed into Zoe Pearson’s family home, an apartment within a converted Victorian terraced house in South East London. Sun floods the family’s space from dawn to dusk, rising with a warm glow and dancing circles on the walls from a disco ball; the beams are a comforting presence throughout the day. By the light of early evening, muted natural palettes and trailing plants bring a restful and grounding feel. It wasn’t always this way, however Zoe and her husband have worked tirelessly to transform this home from dark and difficult, into their own city oasis.

Zoe paints a vibrant picture of her home: “I’ve described it in the past as a mish-mash, or a happy accident. A sort of 70s-boho-meets-vintage-school-room-meets-gardencentre!” she laughs. Zoe’s passion for interiors and love of colour began when she worked as an advertising copywriter, “I was surrounded by so many designers and found that although I couldn’t draw, I could paint!” she says.

BRINGING COLOUR AND LIGHT Zoe, originally from Perth, Scotland, settled with her husband in South London six years ago, “The city got to us, with its mix of greenery, independent shops and friendly people,” she says. Before moving south, the couple had created a colour-filled flat in Edinburgh, and their style has since developed over time. It was on a trip to the US, to Joshua Tree and Ojai, that Zoe first fell for a natural, balmy colour palette. “Ever since, I’ve been obsessed with the dusty, sun-bleached hues and vibrant greens there, as well as the 70s vibes,” she says. “They remind me of being out there and feeling a world away from the hustle and bustle of ‘real’ life. It’s nice to bring a bit of that ‘slow pace’ feeling into our London life. And while my bright, colourful style has evolved, my love of vintage furniture and random finds has remained firm.” On moving in, Zoe knew the house had a good feel and plenty of potential, but was heavy with a lack of light, grey walls, dark brown wooden surfaces, and layers of dust. “Our first few days were just spent cleaning everything before we even started unpacking, but it was wonderful all the same!” enthuses Zoe.
