DEAR REA DERS As I write, it very much feels like autumn has arrived here in the northern hemisphere. Rain is currently lashing against my window, and my laptop rests atop a cosy, woven blanket which is keeping me snug. As humans, we command comfort, especially in the colder months, therefore, in this issue, we decided to celebrate textiles and all that they provide us with, particularly in our homes, but also not forgetting their role as a material to create with. We highlight great shops to source soft furnishings, from bed linen to blankets, and share ideas for decorating with fabric scraps. We talk to a textile designer and take a course in loom weaving. And of course, as always, we explore creative homes and spaces - from a co-working venue in London to a food writer’s home in Vancouver to a delightful lifestyle shop in Bath. I’d like to thank Nancy Straughan (@nancy_straughan) for gifting some of her beautiful organic fabric to the first 200 readers who ordered their copy of the magazine via our website. MICHAEL AND RACHEL SULLIVAN Home Tour Creative couple Michael and Rachel Sullivan’s light and bright Victorian home combines mid-century modern pieces with nods to their love of the seaside, creating a characterful abode with a beach hut vibe

Michael and Rachel Sullivan’s work in the creative industries (graphic designer/photographer, and illustrator/product designer respectively), along with their penchant for vintage finds and their love for the sea, have provided combined inspiration for the renovation of their first home together: a Victorian house in Cheltenham. When Michael and Rachel first collected the keys to their red brick end of terrace house, they discovered that they’d acquired more than they bargained for. ‘The place was infested with fleas!’ shudders Michael. ‘We planned to camp out in the empty house with an airbed and takeaway pizza. But halfway through eating the pizza, we noticed that there was a large family of fleas on my legs!’ After ripping up the carpets and setting off some flea bombs, the Sullivans managed to rid their new home of the unwelcome inhabitants, and their renovations could begin.

‘We’ d been keen to find an older property with a bit of character and charm’ explains Michael. ‘ We took a sneak peek at the house from the pavement the day before our viewing, and had a good feeling we’d be putting an offer in.’ The house was built in 1886, so ticked the period box. ‘It’s a pretty little street and the entire terrace has the same brickwork pattern,’ continues Michael. ‘Inside, the house flowed well, and for a small house, it felt quite spacious thanks to a knocked-through wall.’ The couple were pleased to see exposed floor boards, a fireplace and the original wooden door to the cellar and although the house had been rented out for a number of years before the couple bought it, it was the blank canvas that they had been looking for.

Can you tell us a little about your background and how The Fig Store came to be? For as long as I can remember, I have had a passion for interiors and architecture. I have lived in many homes, from sixteenth century cottages to converted industrial units and self-builds. I never tire of a new project. My background is in design and I started by printing my own fabrics and exhibiting around the country. This naturally progressed into interiors, particularly those that make use of natural materials. Having lived in many styles of home, I realised that any space can be made into a sanctuary. What’s in the name? I would love to say that there is an amazing story about the name of the store, but there really isn’t. We picked a short simple, natural word that would allow the store to evolve without being restricted by its name. The Fig Store stocks a unique range of simple, functional products. What do you look for when stocking the store? I buy what I love and would have in my own house, which can be a problem as I want to take most items home! We try to stay true to a neutral colour palette and we favour items made from natural materials- texture is important when creating a natural interior. I try to find one-off pieces that don’t have a function but instead are a thing of beauty. I believe a home should say something about your personality- I love walking into a house and seeing what makes it unique to its owner.
